My friend, that's what they do in all styles of karate where the sport version is point based. In something like Kykoshin karate, you'll see the way they fight is different. The Shotokan style is NOT 'Shotokan' style...its just sports karate.
+MrPietrasantino I see you got some bad answers. Shotokan is all about range. Moving in and out from your oponent with long quick techniques. Learning to stay at a distance, finding an opening, then moving in and out. While in Goju and Kyokishin kai, you stay much closer. In Kyokushin you kick your oponens legs alot. While in Shotokan there is more focus on hitting the head. In kyokushin and thai boxing, you harden your legs alot. But in shotokan you harden your arms alot to block whatever is coming at you. Compared to Goju ryu there is also a stronger focus on takedowns in sparring. But not on the level of jujutsu.

There is competition karate too on Okinawa, today. Originally karate came from the island of Okinawa and it had no competition and therefore obviously no rules, either (look up Kiyohide Shinjo or Morio Higaonna). It's similar to Krav Maga. The goals of a martial art influence it's techniques. What they show in the video is modern point sparring. They don't try to hurt each other. I respect that too. You can take some aspects from it and transfer them to MMA or, to a lesser degree, self defense. Some of those guys probably could also teach self defense classes, but then they would use different techniques. I think a traditional Okinawan karateka wouldn't fare well in MMA if he never does some form of live sparring - and if you spar, you can't allow injuring your partner, otherwise either you or your partner lands in hospital. When it comes to MMA two other forms of Karate are interesting as well: The Shotokan of the Machidas (looks a *bit* like the point sparring karate (deep stance, focus on distance management) and it works in MMA) and the Kyokushin Kai style, which is focused on full contact competition.

Gergo S. Yes indeed, it’s because of the rule set. Any traditional dojo would not do but sometimes they do use point sparring if it’s training for a tournament.
Point karate guy here. They scream to show they have scored. It's a form of appeal, like in cricket. It shows that you are certain in your technique and can often make the referee decide in your favor. Never thought point karate very useful for MMA, but it's pretty crazy when you see Conor, Wonderboy and MVP
Back when I still practised karate, I refused to make sounds in kata except of course the kiai cuz if you miss them its considered a mistake. I let my kimono do the noises. I didn't like exaggerated kiais and constant sounds after every move.
Excellent speed and finesse, they all look very sharp. Very useful if you add this to other tools in your box. It is what you make it, traditional karate helped me a lot in my later years in power sports.
Many people complain about sport karate and while i do understand where they are coming from, i also understand that many of these ' haters ' are misinformed. Some say that these karatekas are shit compared to traditional Kyokushin or Okinawan Karatekas/other martial arts like Muay Thai etc. Some say they are unable to put up a fight againts actual Muay Thai/ Kyokushin/ any other MA fighter or brawler. After practicing Shotokan/WKF Karate for quite a period of time, I now know that these people in the comments which trash the martial arts and their practioners are people who have either never practiced a day of martial arts in ther lives, or are just pure ignorant dickheads unable to absorb and learn from others. If you think they are unable to ' throw hands ' or actually fight, you are making assumptions based on their fighting style under specific tournament rules which there are limitations/restrictions and these limitations are what shape the ' point sparring ' aspect of the martial art. They arent brawling, they are showcasing a specific style of combat under set rules. With this, you only assume they only know THIS kind of ' fighting ' and none other, which is bullocks considering legit Shotokan Karate schools do teach self defense and actual combat knowledge which are not used in Kumite ( sparring ) or WKF tournament rules ( point sparring ). Under WKF tournament rules, we are taught to control our power but also are required to show a certain level of power exertion ( to avoid injuring oppenents and getting a point deduction ) along with proper form in the techniques shown, and with those conditions met, only then a point is awarded. Imagine in a fight where we wouldn't have to hold back, and dont have to be pressured by throwing attacks in 'proper form', how fast can these ' sport karatekas ' really throw jabs, or any other attacks in that manner? Also, Shotokan karatekas have good stamina and a certain level of body conditioning ( albeit not as much as Kyokushin or Muay thai ). People that call us "jumping around" and "hopping" do not know how tiring it is mentally and physically to 'hop' for 3 minutes or more, waiting for your opponent to attack and waiting for a chance for you to attack. This is a game of speed, precision, reflexes and strategy as even a quarter of a second might decide the outcome. If you commit a mistake in timing or distance, you'll probably get counter attacked if your attack misses. If you somehow lose focus suddenly and your enemy notices it, they may throw a fast Kizami Tsuki ( front jab ) or any other attack and you lose a point. You have to be mentally and physically ready for at least 3 minutes, if not then you might as well just surrender there if your head isnt game. Hesitate for a second, and thats it. So we have pretty good stamina, physical strength, mental hardness and so on from the training and preparation for sparring. Although, being only a 1st dan black belt, i have doubts that i could actually go up againts an actual Muay Thai/ Kyokushin/MMA fighter in a no bars fight and come out on top with an easy victory. They are tough martial arts, i am not in anyway trashing Shotokan, but do agree that there are other martial arts more suited for 'street combat' other than Shotokan. But with that said, there are flaws in every martial arts. What we can do as martial art practitioners is to learn and absorb the pros from multiple martial arts and remove the cons. But if you are trashing Shotokan with a ' they cant fight ' or ' this doesnt work in a street fight ', then i know you are an idiot, and you are so horribly wrong. They can and will destroy any unprepared/amateur brawlers looking for a fight.
the difference between conor and all the people commenting is that he looks for what he can take from the exhibition and they look for what they can criticize.
Sports Karate stances is side on for power shots so if you square the stances up slightly when moving in for power shot more like a kickboxing stances it worked in full contact you this with some classic kickboxers like Bill Wallace ecetra and Connor dose the same. everyone trashing sport karate, but it is not flat footed as kyokushin or kick boxing, not to mention muay thai, it is smooth, it is fast, in and out as fast as possible, by no means is it the best thing to do on its own, but its phenomenal for base and when its incorporated with other martial arts. That stance and movement is superior to flat footedness, thats why guys in UFC are having problems with McGregor, Nelson, Wonderboy, etc.
This is funny cause I know some of these people and the odd thing is this squad got passed to peter Allen (an idiot) then it is now passed on too Gary Foxwell. Gary is my karate sensai and he is also a world champion
Omg the same elusiveness Conor used to beat Aldo. It's ditto the moving in and out. Damn it looks sexy when he did it against Also, now Ik where he learnt it from.
Striking styles are still valuable even in today's mma. When a striking oriented fighter learns enough grappling to avoid takedowns or to be able to get back to their feet they are often difficult for the grappling oriented fighters to beat. So work on your punching and kicking skills.
It's a very big misunderstanding in which context people use the term "traditional" in the martial arts world. Muay Thai and greek/roman wrestling, both represented in MMA, are true traditional (old) martial art styles. Karate in general, and competetive sports Karate specifically, are relatively MODERN martial arts. Please don't get me wrong though, I honestly respect and love Karate.

That scream in 6:01 was pretty helpful. Did more damage than a normal attack
Karate.. is no joke
Pfft, with those screams, I think they'd end up making the enemy die laughing lol.
And this is not real Karate, this is just stupid BS.
those kiais :D horrible to listen to. they make karate seems a bad joke
Gergo S. Yes indeed, it’s because of the rule set. Any traditional dojo would not do but sometimes they do use point sparring if it’s training for a tournament.
The benefits of this style for MMA is the movement and distance management when striking,, not power
Sounds like cats in heat. 😂
His face at 2:20 like "wtf am i doing here"
They sound like my dog’s squeaky toys. Lol
Why don't gojuryu full contact jiyu jumite?
I trained with legend
Wayne Otto at a hall in Crouch hill in 2004 great memories and training sessions.
Sounds like they were taught to kiai by Maria Sharapova
Back when I still practised karate, I refused to make sounds in kata except of course the kiai cuz if you miss them its considered a mistake. I let my kimono do the noises. I didn't like exaggerated kiais and constant sounds after every move.
Im talking about karate shotokan btw
People say this comes from shotokan but no we have no idea what this is we don’t even spar in side stance
Excellent speed and finesse, they all look very sharp. Very useful if you add this to other tools in your box. It is what you make it, traditional karate helped me a lot in my later years in power sports.
"Iiiieeeyyyy"
"Wooooaaahhhh"
This reminds me of the mortal kombat 4 gibberish
They can and will destroy any unprepared/amateur brawlers looking for a fight.
this was pretty on point
the difference between conor and all the people commenting is that he looks for what he can take from the exhibition and they look for what they can criticize.
Sports Karate stances is side on for power shots so if you square the stances up slightly when moving in for power shot more like a kickboxing stances it worked in full contact you this with some classic kickboxers like Bill Wallace ecetra and Connor dose the same. I whish i understood that when i was young and training.
I love this style but I am hesitant in going back to classes because I HATE the katas and the screaming
very quick on there feet and good control but not a traditional example of karate. jka is a better showcase and so is kyokoshin, unfortunately wkf is what will be in the Olympics in 2020 which is what many people see as karate
Props to McGregor its not traditional Karate but still the basics are there
speed an accuracy. This is point karate but when applied properly it is very effective.Mmachida KO'd many top ufc fighters with this style. But this is just one face of it. There is many more moves.
thier is 1 or 2 karate fighters in the ufc i can name list of mauy thai/kickboxing fighters
john Williams no. there is more than 2 karate guys in ufc : lyoto machida, gsp, stephen thompson, urija hall, chuck lidell, frank mir and even conor mcgregor has knowledge in karate
everyone trashing sport karate, but it is not flat footed as kyokushin or kick boxing, not to mention muay thai, it is smooth, it is fast, in and out as fast as possible, by no means is it the best thing to do on its own, but its phenomenal for base and when its incorporated with other martial arts. That stance and movement is superior to flat footedness, thats why guys in UFC are having problems with McGregor, Nelson, Wonderboy, etc.
This has no power to get the job done. This is all for show. Trust me, no one will train in this stupid bs.
So this karate is just about the fast footwork?
Karate is beautiful
I left this playing in the kitchen. I leave room and kept hearing, "HEY!" *smack* "WASSUP!" *thump*
at 5.53 they behave like a cat who is scarred XD
Kiai comes from within, this ones sound and timing are ridiculous.
This is funny cause I know some of these people and the odd thing is this squad got passed to peter Allen (an idiot) then it is now passed on too Gary Foxwell. Gary is my karate sensai and he is also a world champion
Great vid!
5.17 "That was solid oak there yeah" lol GOAT!
omg this is amazing giving sport karate the spotlight it deserves
Can somebody explain to me what the fuck is up with the noises?
2:18 Conor is like. The kind of shit that the UFC gets me into.
This is Sport karate. Doesn't even compare to kyokushin karate or Okinawa karate. This karate t the video is just for fun, not to be a fighter
I wish they got a proper karate style like Kyokushin or Shidokan and shown a full contact fight
Those squeals though, Lol I was dying! xD
he tried so hard to not curse lmaoooo
Omg the same elusiveness Conor used to beat Aldo. It's ditto the moving in and out. Damn it looks sexy when he did it against Also, now Ik where he learnt it from.
"Ooh Awwwwwww" LOL
They’re screaming like it’s Muay Thai lol
Karate is a shadow of its former self. It's turned into a game of tig, where the loudest kiah wins.
They've got Tyron Woodley as a volunteer. Cool.
Striking styles are still valuable even in today's mma. When a striking
oriented fighter learns enough grappling to avoid takedowns or to be
able to get back to their feet they are often difficult for the
grappling oriented fighters to beat. So work on your punching and
kicking skills.
I’ve never seen a less threatening group of teenagers.
Even if you do a kiai to get yourself psyched, the coach should've told them to keep their mouth shut during demos.
Their kyai is so wrong. It’s not a scream, a shout, or even anything to do with your vocals at all. It’s an exhalation.
that speed and precision..
Connor McGregor... and that's why he's a legendary martial artist.
Please don't get me wrong though, I honestly respect and love Karate.
those kids were impressive
That scream at 6:02 hahahaha
Nice video, but the kiais - yes, the sound they make - made me remember the song "What Does The Fox Say"
I was surprised how good they were
those are some solid kicks and punches !!
Dancing Bruce Lee with the colorful slipper.
There is no karate in wkf, but since I saw Aghayev, I believe there is still "but a little bit"
This is not traditional karate. This is Sports karate or Olympic karate
Funny how he used everything here and beat Aldo
That’s not traditional Karate…. That’s sport olimpic Karate…..
