There will ALWAYS be something to be said about a pure, powerful, bare knuckle punch. I'm a BJJ practitioner but I have massive respect for those devoted to mastery of striking arts. I'm fascinated with the knuckle/hand/wrist conditioning of hard Karate styles. Of all the arts, I'd rather not take a punch from a devoted Karateka.

Reading some comments that say Mike Tyson could deliver more power in a punch, maybe so but that's not the point of this video, the Sensei is not claiming he is more powerful than anybody else, he is just demonstrating what the human body is capable of with adequate training, and I find it amazing.

I used to take Karate when I was younger, I achieved up to blue belt and was pretty decent.
It's all about conditioning yourself to perform it first of all, through constant technique practice and sparring, as well as rigorous stretching and exercise.
You learn the katas and proper form for kicks and punches first, then you're taught to master your breathing.
You exhale all your breath "through" the object, and imagine the hit being like an immovable wind.
Also you transition your feet and body from the ground during this process to maximize the power of your hit.
Karate was very disciplined and full of immense respect and comradery between fellow students and instructors (Sensei).
I know the practice is meant to be for pure self defence in a practical way but also to be honest and practice with a zen mind and not to use with malice, much like the quote "with great power comes great responsibility.."

I find many of these comments very rude and disrespectful. Give respect where it is due. The man spent his life training. Most of the martial arts we all have heard of like karate can be traced back to a time where people where at war and designed to be deadly. Those same countries today are peaceful and most practitioners advocate peace and spirituality. So all of these martial arts have been proven in war and blood otherwise they wouldn't have survived into tradition. There are many that compare martial arts to MMA. I do not think that is fair and here is why. MMA is and for most of its history on tv was a show. Catered to an audience. Compare that to the first fights...No rules, no gloves. A kick to the face broke 3 teeth and lodged them in the foot, ended the fight almost as soon as it began. Soon came rules and regulations and now its edging closer to WWE reality tv. MMA has never been fair and a true show of lethality. All fighters must fight carefully and never to the full potential of what they can do. That is only reserved for war. So my message, dont be childish and give respect to those that put countless hours of hard work into their art.

At 5:00 correct. In Isshinryu Karate (Derived from Gojuryu and Shorinryu) we trained the concept of "Instantaneous Destructive Force" for street self-defense. We're going to defeat each attacker in one or two strikes so we are prepared for the next attacker. This means we typically train to attack the groin and especially the THROAT of the person attacking us.

for those who comment "board won't fight back, other disciplines much better/effective, etc." pls bear on your mind, whatever your discipline is...the key to win the fight is speed and power. you may land your 10 punches without power on that man but the man only land his one punch then you end up dead. or you move too slow so that man can block your punch and hit you once, you end up dead as well.
the point here is don't underestimate others who train their discipline well. sport fighting is much different than real fight, which has no rule at all, so can't compare.

Makiwara is a very useful exercise to strengthen the hands
Hitting the goal helps to develop speed, strength, and precision in defense art Makiwara is part of the traditional karate complementary training called Hojo undo
Makiwara is a simple and easy tool and you can make it at home and train it daily for a quarter of a half hours to make your hands steel
But what is important here is that you need to train it correctly or otherwise it has a loss
    Especially those students who started

I am not a martial art student but a racquet sport player. To me, it seems the science is the same. In tennis, when one hit the sweet spot and follow through properly e.g. full waist rotation, the ball goes powerful and strong towards opponent. And the surprising thing is, there is little jarring on the shoulder. But when one does not hit with follow through and not connect the sweet spot, you feel much tension on the shoulder and yet the ball does not travel powerfully. I believe is the same principle.

In Okinawa this is their national sport. I served on the island many years ago and got to see many masters do thoroughly impressive things. You will not find any more humble genuine people in the world. Their way of life is beautiful and I suspect that is one reason they live so long there. My regret in life is that I did not remain on the island longer as I had that opportunity at the time. To this day, some of my fondest memories in my life were found on that island. Yes, their techniques are deadly but they would never consider boasting about such a thing.

As someone who learned to punch in this manner, let me explain what you are seeing. He is positioning his skeletal structure for forward torque rather than speed at the point of impact. His torso rotates an already straight arm, which he must simply keep rigid as his fist drives through the target. It is, to some degree, him simply pushing his hand into sand -- only he's conditioned his muscles and pain tolerance enough to strike a solid target like bone or wood, and can drive his hand through it as it gives way. He has practiced his form enough to have the right skeletal structure so that his muscles don't have to do all the work.
This sort of punch feels like two things to the person being struck. First, it does NOT push you upon contact -- those two knuckles sink into you, far more than is comfortable. They go into you like you are not there, hitting 2+ inches into you with the impact force. Then, the rest of the fist begins to sink in as well. Then it feels like a push, but only afterward. It hits a lot like a side kick or heel kick, with similar force. It can knock you down, despite looking like a simple clumsy punch. Some heavyweight boxers throw/threw punches in a similar manner -- one of the most famous is George Foreman, who many people claim is the hardest hitting boxer to ever step into the ring.
Someone trained to punch like this can hit a solid brick wall repeatedly and at near full power with virtually no damage to themselves, save for a bit of friction damage to the lead knuckles. Repeated punching like this creates micro-fractures in the bone that heal over, making the skeleton stronger and stronger each time. Eventually, it is nothing to punch right through boards.

The saying "The board wont fight back" is meant to say that an actual trained opponent won't complyantly wait for you to land the punch on the intended spot, like the board does.
An actual opponent will block / dodge / move / counterstrike, in short; he/she will do something that greatly diminishes your punch power.
It is much more valuable having lots of sparring training (instead of perfecting the perfect punch) because gives you experience as to how to continue after your "plan" didn't pan out as you intended. (Everybody has a plan until they take a punch to the face)
The key word in you statement is "if", and you most definitely won't land that punch cleanly to the head of a well trained opponent.

i am sorry for saying this. but the idea of "traditional" karate is always to counter attack since "there is no first attack in karate", that's why the kata is developed not in offensive but rather defensive state of mind. Even the traditional Muay Thai forms are actually counter attacks. You can easily land blows on a anyone who try to hit you no matter his/her style. The Daido Juku is a whole different story.

You can see the absolute power of that strike in the way it shook what was behind the boards.

If you're wondering why is he doing weight lifting with so much little weight and so little movement, it's because he's just preparing his triceps, deltoids and trapezius for the punches. It's like warming up with the bonus of triking your own body by making it think it weights more, therefore giving stronger punches. This guy can lift more and is probably stronger than most of us viewers.

I train in MMA I can tell you his punching technic is spot on. Yeah, it's impractical when you are up against a wrestler or street fight if that is your only move. But you haters sitting on couch missing the point of Martial Arts if only thing you are thinking about is street fight. I got mad respect for this man.

I do Karate - almost 18 years in Japan. I do respect this man but those boards for the 板割 are mad dry and brittle LOL. I broke a couple last week by accident. I do believe he has a strong punch for his age though.

    • @hezekiah74
      @hezekiah74 5 років тому

Hippy(Bboomer) I believe so with decent technique a lot of power can be transferred even with a light body frame. As long as you don’t tense up.

    • @hezekiah74
      @hezekiah74 5 років тому

@Hippy(Bboomer) Well exactly, the tensing should be timed to the point of contact only. But then immediately relax, as you but need to move swiftly in defense or for a follow up attack. Actually in Okinawa - very far from mainland Japan (here) they do bare knuckle conditioning.

While I do agree with Bruce Lee's statement in Enter the Dragon, "boards don't hit back", if that punch lands solid, the recipient will unlikely be able to hit back. That's broke ribs or a fractured skull. Such a body blow to the liver is putting you down. That's for real. My advice in fighting him is to keep moving and don't charge in, definitely not blindly.

I have been learning Shotokan karate for four and half years now, I'm at 1st Kyu (One before the first black belt). This guy's hands are in very good condition compared to other's. His hands aren't warped and he clearly hasn't overdone knuckle conditioning because the calluses aren't that extreme.

  • @zammd004

A lot of trash talking behind the scenes. Please respect the Master who is paying homage to his art during this demo where traditional budo is the essence. These techniques were used during the feudal period of Okinawa where weapons were prohibited and so the one punch to destroy one's enemy was perfected to pierce the body armour. The callous knuckles are due to years of body conditioning and if any commentators should wish to try these moves at home you are all welcome to do so!
