Sheera, yeah people use a pick to play guitar, but that's not the fingers that you hurt and need tobuild callouses with. You have to build callouses on the fingertips that hold the strings down on the frets. Literally every guitar player has calloused fingertips and when you go a long time without playing, you have to redevelop those callouses.
With finger picking playing classical guitars I got pretty good calluses on my strumming fingers as well. But you’re correct
