This was my first amp, had to sell it due to the severe chorus addiction it caused, my family found me on the floor, two extension cabs either side of me, this amp blasting at the maximum chorus setting. The doctors said I was lucky, I could have remained seasick the rest of my life.
Sadly, I still can’t go near the sea. I also get violently ill if I meet anyone named Roland

I played harp through a 50 watt version of this. There's something magical that happens when you hit this with a tube screamer and the chorus engaged. sounds fantastic

You know, I'm something of a chorus addict myself.
I managed to get a "broken" JC120 for $200 Canadian bucks. There was a loose nut at the speaker that made it buzz at any volume. Tightened that up and it is GLORIOUS. I've moved away from tubes (sitting with Ryan in camp Quilter) but I'll ALWAYS have a JC now. In the studio especially.

I have a JC40 and I absolutely love it, it works so well for so many sounds and styles. It's definitely my favorite amp for clean sounds and one of the overall best amps I've ever owned. I initially wanted to get one so I could emulate Metallica's clean tone, but it really does so much more. I would highly recommend checking one out for those who have never played one before.

I have a JC 77 and I played live, in stereo for years. It has 2 direct outs… I’d use both line outs into the PA. One hard panned left, the other, hard panned right. You hit the nail on the head when you said it was “lush.”
I can see all kinds of wild ways this could be used in home recording… I am listening to this video with headphones on, and it certainly has held my attention. Love the love end of your guitar. The amp complements your guitar perfectly! 👍👍👍 You reminded me how much I loved the jazz chorus amp!
Got one of these amps last month. Such a sweet sound. So fun to use to play the 80s post-punk classics of my youth.
He's got my favorite amp right there. Good for home use (even apartment playing potentially) and low volume practice, sounds fantastic clean, takes dirt pedals very well. Not a chance I'll ever sell it. In fact, it caused me to sell all my other home/practice amps except my bass amp (its just plain better). My favorite chorus setting is with the chorus on and the depth all the way down; no warble but just sounds subtly wider in the best way.
Pairing Recommendations
Wampler Tumnus (or any Klon clone): Gives you a very nice overdriven sound that the amp likes very well.
Wampler Ego (or any compressor you like): For when you need compression, because the amp has none.
Boss Blues Driver: Extremely versatile. Overdrives, distortions, and even fuzz-like as you crank it up.
Boss Super Overdrive: I use it for "rock cleans" to give it a little sparkle, because the amp has absolutely no grit.
Boss DS-2: Dead on Nirvana sound.
Catalinbread Sabbra Cadabra: For when you want to Sabbath.
Boss HM-2w: This amp can both Swedish Chainsaw and Shoegaze just fine with this excellent piece of kit.
Any delay, reverb, or modulation effects you please: This amp loves pedals, seems to love everything that originated from the 80's on.
Pairs that Clash (in my experience)
Tubescreamer: Very odd sounding, pedal was intended for tube amps.
Fuzz Face (repro of the original circuit, modern pedals may co-operate better): Similar to Tubescreamer, something is just not right.
Boss DS-1: Very under-powered, but again, pedal was intended for tube amps from the 70's.

I have a Roland Cube 60 I bought new back in the early 80s as a backup amp. Haven't fired it up in while, but it still works. The reverb did crap out a long time ago, but it didn't really matter since I had a pretty nice pedal board.
I have the 50 watt cube, debadged the cube logo and added a Roland logo, now its my "JC50" 🙂
AC33 owner here. It’s an acoustic amp but the EHX Soul Food and Boss DS1 pedals gives it the grunge I need. They’re super portable with a battery option (@ 20watts); and the outputs work well into a house PA or a mixing board. I’m pretty happy. Love Rolands.
After a long time faffing with technical problems on my Fender Champion 600, I bit the bullet and bought one of these (for home use). I mostly use clean and slightly saturated tones. I run a Boss GT-001 into my JC-22, meaning I have a slew of Boss effects and amp simulation that I can delve into. With Boss being Roland's guitar effects sub-division, this setup ties together really well. The amp responds very favourably to things like Boss' Fender amp sims, as well as their effects. I can't speak to the heavy distortion stuff, as I don't use that, but if, like me, you like things clean, and maybe want to put a couple of Boss effects before it, for a hint of breakup, or whatever, this amp is most excellent. Ryan's correct in describing the immediacy of the attack. It's revealing and encourages you to tighten up your technique, but it's also very rewarding and immersive when practicing.
If you plug into JUST the right stereo jack, and turn the chorus on, you get sound through just the right speaker which is modulating the volume up/down, which inadvertently then makes the sound behave like a rotary speaker. A cool hack with this amp.
This is my practice amp!!! It fits perfectly below my desk, and the tone is absolutely wonderful

Personally I love how austere it sounds through distortion and fuzz. The pedals are saying 'lets down some Jack Daniels, let our hair down and rock out!' and the JC is like: 'nope, we're going to put on some eyeliner and think about our future as a society.'
I own a JC-40, for me it is a perfect amp due to its clean and bold sound. I've always been a solid state fan since the LAB series, and Yamaha G series, but I never thought I would utilize stereo as much as I do with this amp. The trick to using the bright switch is to turn the treble down to around 9 o'clock or below, then turning on the Bright switch.
That's exactly what I do with my JC-22. Makes the clean tone even cleaner - without being "too clean" 👍

Back in 2005 my old ska band was using a jazz chorus with a metal zone pedal as a drive. This is something you should try.

I 1000% love this amp. I have waited for this amp for years!! Made me fall back in love with playing the guitar!! But I also get that it's not for everyone. I wanted a clean channel pedal platform beast foe home recording and playing at low volumes.
This is the amp I use now! since the day I bought it! I always play on it and other amps have been gathering dust! it just sounds good!! wonderful clean chnannel! good reverb! big chorus sound!! takes pedals very well! no tubes to worry about
Jazz Chorus for high gain tones is an interesting experiment, but it's been done really well in certain post-hardcore acts. Notably, the past couple Drug Church records have used it as one of the two main tones... Jazzmaster > Tubescreamer > Rat > Jazz Chorus 120. It sounds great, especially if your other guitarist is running a more conventional Les Paul > Marshall/Orange high gain setup.
I got an old beat-up JC 120 to use in a similar band, and the real special part of a jazz chorus with high gain pedals comes from the feedback and ambient noise. The old ones in particular have a lot of passive white noise/hiss, so when you throw your big muff/rat/overdrive pedals on the front end and flip on the chorus, the resulting feedback is just so, so nice. Then, recently, I discovered a fun quirk where turning on my dirt pedals and chorus effect and turning my guitar's volume pot to zero, we could pick up FM radio signals that would play through the amp speakers all fuzzed out with a chorus effect. I think it had to do with one or two of the wires inside my particular amp being cut and acting like little antennae. Really cool stuff.

I have a JC-22, it's indeed very Hi-Fi, and just like when you get a good Hi-Fi system you hear new things out of your old records and want to play them all through it, you'll find yourself going through every pedal and guitar to hear exactly what they do in microscopic detail.
I have this amp. Love it. Crystal clear lush chorus. It’s 30 watts. Takes pedals very well. My buddy has the JC40. Thing’s a beast!

Don't sell it. I sold my JC-120 head and it is the biggest regret of all my gear transactions over the past decades.
My 120 is so noisy. Yeah, it sounds great, but so much noise. It's not clean.
I should say it crapped out on a gig in the 90s, but my roommate at the time was an airplane electrician so he replaced whatever blew. It was still noisy after that. Crazy, it's about 40 years old now. I have friends with Fenders from the 60s. That's nuts. I'm feeling old.

I haven't tried it myself, but I think a lot of people are discovering that they are great with stereo looper pedals, people invariably layer "up" so having filled your rhythm "track" you can still have a channel devoted to your lead.
It is actually a 30w amp, running two separate 15w amps

I love my JC 40...more than loud enough for any gig...i highly recommend placing a stereo delay in front ..that paired with the stereo chorus is heavenly
One of my best friends has a JC 120 and it's incredible! I plug into that monster every time I go over there! It's great at dialing in Alex Lifeson tones.
If you ever get the chance to play (or purchase!) an old Gallien Kreuger ML250 go for it. Alex endorsed them at one point and used it for so many cleans.
@@BryanTheBand I actually had a GK 250 ML with a GK 212 Stereo Celestion cab. This was back in the early 90's. My apartment got robbed and they got my GK, my White on white Strat, my best friends, black and gold, Washburn Steve Steven's signature, a big ass Crate 212 combo, my rent money, and my wife's jewelry box which had nothing but hand made jewelry in it. Not valuable but certainly sentimental. Yup, that was a SUCKY day!

My first amp was a Rosac 25w ss with a built in sring reverb and tremolo. I bought from my freinds big brother for $25 in 1979. I wish I still had it. I sold it and bought a JC-120 in 86, it had real spring reverb and tremolo (vibrato) but you could only use that or the chorus not both. That thing was a Beast and I should of kept it. forward to 2024, In the market for a new ss with all the new awsome anolog amps coming out. Been eyeing the JC 40 as one of the potential contenders. Your review helpd me a bit narrowing down my choices. Thanks for the memories.

The slept on features of the 22 are the stereo line out jacks for recording and the stereo fx loop. It’s the ultimate home recording clean amp. Lots of value here.
It’s a great home amp, very loud for its size plus it’s stereo. It takes pedals well. I never touch the bright switch though!

Hi Ryan, the reason I enjoy your channel so much is because of your honesty. I’m listening to the fuzz and overdrive sound thinking it doesn’t sound good and you were honest about it. I would ABY it with a tube amp for a clean channel.

I've owned a JC22 since last summer. I picked up a JC40 which is better because it's loud enough to play at band volume.
The JC40 is fuller sounding than the JC22. Either one of these can be had used. They're great amps.

Thanks to your video I learned something great. While I do not have a Jazz Chorus 22, I have half a Roland JC 120. To elaborate, earlier this year I was desperate for an Amp, just restarting with electric guitar when I found a no name amp announced for 20 euro. I mean it had a name , but that was just - the whole concept of this amp as I googled and learned was that it was sold from a Korean factory exclusively to companies who sold it under their own name. But since most didn't change the model name itself I found out a bit more including this. To top it all of I was even gifted it, because the seller was a bit ashamed of the scratching poties (due to it not being actively used for quite some time). It is a 60W solid state googleable as "SM 60 RC". And I definitely recognized the sound from your model and crossed checked it with an Amp Sim of a JC120 (which also could just do mono, so it is even more like mine). Since it originates in Korea like the Roland (Production wise at least) and it sounds like it I guess it is either by the same company or a shameless copy. However I quite enjoyed it before , now I can put a reason to it ;-) (despite all that, I got said modeler combo, a Vox Vt40+, but I return more and more to the tubeless solid state. It has Chorus, Reverb and Overdrive.
I got one years ago when they first came out for $400. My opinion aligns with yours.

I've owned this amp for a couple of years now. I love playing my Ric through it. Even better, I split the Ric stereo output into this clean amp with wide slow chorus and a touch of reverb and run a second amp with a touch of distortion, freakin' awesome!
"That Peavey 1x12? Yeah, if the guitar sounds good, it will sound good!" And it could not have been more true. Solid state amps are ruthless regarding their input signal. With a great tube amp, the difference between two Stratocasters are small. On the solid state, it will hide nothing and highlight everything; and you will have a much more "direct" idea of the guitar tone as "Source" of the sound. Tube amps do color a lot, staying clean or not; they all have their own voicing. Solid state amps can seem lifeless but I still love them for their honesty, and with a good guitar, you will have a great time and tone. But for me, a solid state is not a "versus" to the tube amp, it simply is something different. MOSFET, JFET, OP-Amp, they all have their own thing, and if "tube clean" is not the clean you are looking for, it's totally worth a look.
I recently bought a used JC-55 and I think my search for an amp is over. I really like it.
I used an original single speaker 50w version with my old band for quite a while. There's just something special with this amp and, even though it was quite old, playing with a death metal chainsaw tone through it was amazing. If I'll ever be able to I'll get myself the 44w version because this is honestly an incredible peace of gear.
I have this one and absolutely love it. I think the built in reverb lets it down a little but if you've got one of these you're probably running your own reverb pedal any way. Everything else is amazing
I have one. I love it. I have only three amps. A lazy J 20, which is a knock off Tweed, a Boogie Studio 22+, which is like a souped up AC. Both smallish tube amps that do different things. The little Roland does things those tube amps can’t. Studio, bedroom, living room. Anywhere you need a small, clean amp with a gorgeous chorus. Built like a tank too… I often wonder if I needed a bigger JC. Then I lift it up with one hand and remember…

It’s pretty damn loud for 30w. The magnets on those 6” speakers are massive. It’s not light.
My main surf garage rock rig is with my 1980s Jc-120. F-stop plus an overdrive.

Glorious! I've always wanted a JC. I played a Peavey Stereo Chorus 212 for many years and have only used stereo amps with chorus ever since. Never a JC though. I've got to make this happen.
I just got one two weeks ago, it is set up in my bedroom across from my Marshall DSL1CR. I love it, all my guitars sound great thru it, especially my Gibson LP Junior with the single P-90 Great clean low-volume amp, it's a keeper.
One of the best solid state amps I've heard are the 70's Yamaha amps they made in collaboration with Paul Rivera. The GLII Pro.
My first proper amp was a JC120. Too big, too heavy, too loud, but I wish I still had it. Been really tempted by these tiny guys
Hendricksen amps are a couple blocks away from my house. Another jazz amp well built and not well known.But growing as a company on the rise. Cute little amp btw, makes me giggle a little cause it’s so dinky looking. lol sounds huge though and really sounds good btw.

i have a jc-120 from around 1975. it's still alive and i don't feel the need to check out other amps. it's really great.
I used to run the on board Boss COSM effects from my BR-800 straight into a Roland KC60(whatever the small chunky stereo one was) at college... and it was the best rhythm and lead tone I've ever played thru! So tight yet resonant, I felt super in control and harmonically indulged at the same damn time! Roland just know stuff! Now want a JC
Wow I’ve always loved the JC-120, that little thing looks amazing. I’ve seen people make their whole rig just a JC-120 and some BOSS pedals, and absolutely kill consistently.
JC40 and Fender Princeton Chorus are my two main amps at this point.

from the manual:
Dimensional space chorus
This uses two completely independent amps and speakers; one
amp and speaker output the direct sound that is sent from the
guitar, while the other amp and speaker output a sound that is
subtly pitch-modulated. These two sounds are mixed in the air,
creating a softly spacious three-dimensional effect that is warm,
deep, and natural-sounding.
Worth noting the Boss Dimension C pedal is basically the chorus from this amp in pedal form, with a few options available to select from (it has 4 buttons but you can push 2 at the same time, my favorite setting is 2+4)
I've run my Dimension C through my JC22 layering the chorus and it gets real silly
THe JC Amps are terrific. The JC120 in particular is legendary. You can play electric guitars through it. You can play acoustic guitars through it. You can play keyboards through it. And all will sound great. However, the JC amps do have their own idiosyncracies. The spring reverb units in them are very fragile and prone to failure especially if the amp is moved around a lot. The speaker cloth is not that durable and will tear easily if the amp is transported without being in a case. The power light is flimsy and will often fail at the most inconvenient time. The JCs are great studio amplifiers but perhaps not so great when used for gigging. In that case much better to use a pair of Roland Cube amplifiers and a Boss CE-3 Stereo Chorus Pedal feeding each amp. The Cubes can be positioned to create a wider stereo field which sounds great especially for rhythm playing, they are lighter so easier to lug around, they are more durable, they offer redundancy, and there is always the option to just use one amplifier. All the benefits of the JC but a whole lot more flexible. Only downside is that you need to alter two sets of controls if you want to change a setting on the amplifier. It might sound silly, but don't knock if until you've tried it. Cheers from the Land Down Under.
This is my fav amp of all time. I got rid of valve amps and kept only this one, plus it is super cute, matches my Mustang.
I had a JC-22 but didn’t love it. I feel that it really suffers from having such small speakers. I sold mine and purchased a JC-120H, like James Hetfield used for cleans back in the day. Running this into a pair of 2x12’s. Sounds amazing!
Everyone needs an extension cab. I have a Thiele as my go-to for this.

I used to own a Jazz Chorus JC160 with the 4x10 speaker cabinet.
Wow, I own this amp, so I'm embarrassed to admit, you probably played it more in this video, than I have since I've owned it, for two years. I have to step up my music game. :)
For OD and sustaining solos I use (alone or stacked) a Voodoo Labs Sparkle Drive, an EH Soul Food, and an MXR Timmy. The JC40 loves all three.
I used a late 80s RoandJazz Chorus JC 120 for a few years with my jam band. It still has the best sounding chorus ever (so much better with the larger speakers rather than those small ones he's playing thru) AND the reverb was as spectacular. I wish i had never sold it. Last time i looked the year/model i had are twice as much used as i paid new back in 92'. Great pedal platform

I just had my original (blue face) 1985 Scholz Rockman Chorus/Delay refurbished and built a stereo rig based around it. Still the best sounding chorus I've heard.
I have a JC40 and a JC22. Both can be dialed in to have some lovely sounds with fuzz and overdrive.
Sparkling clean
I've had my Roland JC-77 (2 10' speakers) since 1985. Such a great amp. Paired with my AC30 its my wet amp in a wet/dry rig. Best Chorus pedal out there!
I have a JC-40 and JC-22. The 40 is a totally different amp to the 22 for me. Much more open sounding and less boxy. If you pair these with an EQ and pre amp pedal, they can be anything you want them to be. I use the cheap as chips Joyo American sound and the Surfy Industries Blossom Point before the amp and paired with my Surfy Bear, the JC-40 will surf with the best of them. I've owned the JC-40 since it was released nearly 10 years ago now and recently picked up a Princeton to see what I was missing out on. I could not get the variety of sounds I needed out of it, so it sits in a cupboard. These are truly the quality "swiss army knives" of guitar amps. Any sound you want is right there on tap if you know how to unlock them.
The only downside to these is that the "JC hiss" is real. Not that noticeable on the 22 but quite apparent on the 40. Probably more than most tube amps I've played and only really an issue if you want a dead quiet amp when not playing.

I have this exact same amp, in my opinion it's the perfect apartment/gigging amp... my band even recorded all our guitars through it

Is the 22 loud enough to play live. I’m thinking playing an acoustic guitar through it for a small venue and a singer. Won’t need massive volumes but want to make sure I’ll have enough
@@gazzaduce3424 hi! I played a show with my other band last weekend and our guitar player used the 22 and it did the job just well, with the volume knob at 12 o clock. We played in a bar that's on an old large house (old wood floor, big walls) so even with the natural reverb, it sounded alright. Bear in mind, his tone is very clean and mostly ambient-inspired, just a mild crunch at specific moments.

@@gazzaduce3424 no problem :) I strongly recommend the JC22, you get stereo, chorus and reverb and it's the top solid state amp imo, better than Fender tone masters
I have a JC40 and I love it. If I want a more standard rock n' roll response, I have a Vox Big Ben overdrive that I put in front of it. That's a giant obsolete real-tube overdrive pedal. It has a very transparent EQ and can be set clean. It makes it sound much more like a standard tube amp, but it's still really fast. Then I have an A/B looper/switcher so I can bypass all the subtle dirt and go right into a Muff-Style fuzz and into the clean amp. I love a Muff into a solid state amp! Ultimately I can easily switch between three sounds: ultra-clean, regular rock n' roll, and fuzz.
It's the exact opposite of my AC15 which gives everything a bit of a compressed British-rock sound. On the JC40, different sounds sound VERY different, which is cool.
But I've also wanted to have a trashy-sounding glam rock band that uses the built-in JC40 distortion.
The Jazz Chorus is GOAT for us Shoegazers.

So, Steve Rothary used the big version for ages in Marillion. He also used a Boss DS-1 to create his lead sound. Of course, the tone is rolled all the way down on the DS-1!!!! It can be done - but you got to want it. On the other hand, Billy Duffy used 1 alongside his Marshall. That is EPIC!! If you put something like the Blackstar Dept 10 or a Kingsley Page, Squire or Maidan, you can get as much of that tube feeling as you need - and you can push those pedals with your drive thingys. Then you can turn that all off and have the best chorus sound ever. If you go for the version w/ 2 x 10"s (or this 1), try in a wet dry rig with any other tube amp. It will be a happy place.
I don't know why my subscription disappeared, but I resubbed. I have the JC-40, and it's amazing. I stack a Marshall Origin 20C on top and blend the two together.
