Rick, great material! very interesting! I don´t see any Ritchie Blackmore content, which is odd. I strongly recommend you to listend to his music. cheers!
I met SL in 2017 the day before my mother died. Paid to meet Toto backstage and slipped him a note asking him to dedicate a song to my soon to be late mother. I didn't think he would but guess what? He dedicated I'll Be Over You to Donna in such a sweet and honest way that I was in tears for the whole song! To this day I STILL can't even watch 10 seconds of the video but one day I'll be able to watch the whole thing! I LOVE you Mr. Lukather!!!
That was so nice ....I tear up right now by reading this because I feel your loss man... because my Mom died that same year in April...Rest in peace to our mothers. And I love that song too!!
I met Luke about 10 years ago, at a VIP meet and greet for a small solo show he had, back when such things were still possible. And he was the nicest, most humble, most grounded rock star I've ever met. I came away honestly thinking "what an incredibly nice guy". Then I saw him live after the meet and greet, and I came away thinking "what an absolute and utter master of his instrument." I was blown away, twice, for different reasons. There are a lot of rock stars who could do the second part, but SO few rock stars that can do both.
Me too, but after the gig through a friend. Completely blew me away playing, then just the most humble and nice guy you could hope to ever meet in your life. Touched me in a really positive, special way that is impossible to describe. Steve, if you see this, thank you from the bottom of my heart. 🙏
What separates Lukather from almost every other guitarist is that he made and contributed to memorable songs. That’s the highest compliment you can give to any musician.
100% - too many people lose track of this fact when assessing and rating musicians. For me, the bottom line in valuing a musician is, how great was the music that you produced from your instrument?
@Giuliano de' Medici, Don't get it twisted I dig Luke's playing & respect his skills no doubt. However, there's many other legendary guitarists who've also had some pretty memorable music careers IMO. 2 guitarists Steve already mentioned & admires in this interview being Dean Parks & Larry Carlton. A few other legendary guitarist's are Joe Messina, Tommy Tedesco, Steve Cropper, Hank Garland, Glen Campbell, James Burton, Chet Atkins, Brent Mason, George Barnes, Tim Pierce, Paul Jackson Jr., etc... Whether you think I'm being bias or not I'd also put my buddy on that list who's had a pretty stellar career in music & one of the top go to studio session players & touring guitarists in Nashville & still kicking azz! "Tom Bukovac" AKA Buk, Little Tommy, Session Man, Starship Trooper, Uncle Larry. Plus, Buk's just a really good dude who continues to pay it forward as busy as he is in the studio or on tour. Buk still takes time in his day by giving free guitar lessons & insight to the music business, guitars & gear. Which to me say's a lot & separates Tommy that you don't really see to many other pro musicians doing out there to much. Just saying... +Peace & Rock n' Roll 4 Your Soul+
It's unreal what a loveable person he is. The fact that he maintained this level of humbleness and down-to-earth attitude over THIS career and musical greatness truly warms my heart. Thank you, Luke, thank you, Rick - that was 82 minutes of my life well spent.
For sure. Saw him live last year. He radiated kindness and stayed so humble throughout the entire show, you could tell he enjoyed every minute on that stage and was grateful for being there with the band.
Authenticity is not humility. Energized is not humility. Self-absorption is not humility. A guest on an interview show continually interrupting the interviewer is the antithesis of humility. Mkay?
Has played on over 1500 albums...before and during his 45 years as the sole constant in TOTO. A workhorse who is still on fire for his craft. A true force of nature. And Rick...you're amazing too...as one of the greatest music analysts and visionaries.
@@castormontesquintillan6752 Give him time, I'm sure that he will. Bear in mind that he only recently did a feature on Jeff Beck. As another commenter notes, there are so many great musicians from Rick's generation, and his taste is so expansive, that it's difficult to get to them all as fast as we'd like him too. Think of it as something to look forward too...
O.M.G. I saw this pop up on my way to bed and now I'm getting to sleep an hour and 22 minutes late. This was the greatest interview/conversation I have ever seen with Luke. How could you not just love this guy? He is so real, humble, self-effacing and brilliantly talented. Rick, you have become THE ambassador between us everyday players and our heroes/influences. I cannot thank you enough for what you do. I know you do it because you love it and - because you can. There is only one Rick Beato, and we are so grateful to have you.
For me, this is the best interview in the universe. It's like being down the pub with Luke and sitting there, head in hands, listening to this guy telling you the story of your teenage musical dreams. One of the best 90 mins I've ever spent.
Agreed. If you haven’t seen it though go check out the Lukather returns to sunset sound interview. It’s the best look at his personality and intimate understanding of what happens in the studio. The stories are incredible.
Luke is one of those rare people who is so incredibly humble, and who truly cannot comprehend how phenomenally talented he is. His music is such a gift 💜🎵
hes far from humble, baffles me how most people here in the comment section dont think that giving self-praise on every two sentences and painting yourself as a mary sue on most of the stories you tell in an interview isnt a sign of obvious vanity
@@koleyturner8491 Exactly. Nearly every comment is saying - "Steve is so humble and down to earth". What planet are these people living on? Because I always thought, interrupting, not listening to people and acting fairly dismissive of peoples opinions or questions, was pretty arrogant and moronic.
@@deepzepp4176 yeah for sure, you hit the nail on the head, you basically have two different types of people when it comes to having a conversation, you have "those who listen" and you have "those who wait to talk",.........and Steve is definitely one of those who waits to talk, and waiting to talk is usually the sign of narcissist, and there's nothing more aggravating than trying to have a conversation with a narcissist lol, it's basically an exercise in futility everytime
Seriously one of the best guitarists the world has ever born ear witness to. His taste and style in all of his genre crossing playing combined with his extremely humble disposition and great sense of humour is a testament to how amazing this man is. Thank you Steve for existing!
This is a masterclass musician interview. No BS, no PR, just a discussion about and true passion for the music... and some playful stories along the way. Great job.
Absolutely and that’s what makes Ricks interviews so unique. Be it Billy Corgan, Sting, Tim Henson,… - they all feel that this is about music/passion, no record-/tour-promotion or whatever. Just 2 musicians talking MUSIC. So once again: thank you, Rick for providing your guests this “safe haven” and us with this great content, insights, stories.
@@irevisibel9237 yEAH/nO (YOU KNOW?) Caps on so hell is freezing over and when asked about Allan, Steve just said something like, yeah we were good friends. If these guys that have a voice do not give praise where praise is due, then nobody will. My only gripe about the interview.
This could be one of the best interviews out there… Luke is just a beast who tries at every opportunity to talk about how great OTHER people are. He has it all..time, feel, ideas and technique. People can dislike Toto or whatever they want but there is absolutely no doubt that Luke is an astonishing musician who takes time to look out for other players. Great stuff, Rick
Lukather is bar none one of the best interviews in rock. Not only does he have decades of stories to tell but he's just one of the most fun and unique personalities you could ever hope to talk with. Keep the amazing content coming, Rick.
@@JayTor2112 I think that’s the annoying part about him. I saw him being interviewed for a Premier Guitar UA-cam video a few years ago and that’s all he did was interrupt, kept playing stuff while Jon Bollinger was trying to ask him questions and was just all over the place. Maybe he’s got ADHD or something.
This was such an enjoyable interview. Rick barely had to say anything and Luke just went off with all these great stories about the old days. What a complete legend both these guys are. Thank you Rick for making this happen.
there is nothing like watching two old guys talking about something they both know parts of especially if drinking. musicians and gear-heads are common in that regard.
Both Lukather and Rick have been so good to each other. Steve gave Rick's channel more credibility in the beginning ... and now I have even a greater appreciation for Steve's musical genius / legacy due to Rick's channel.
I’ve just spent the last hour and 22 minutes with a huge grin plastered to my face. That has to be one of the coolest interviews of any kind I’ve ever seen. I’m 52 so I’ve seen my share lol. It helps that Lukather is not only one of the greatest session musicians in history but he’s like listening to your buddy tell stories from when you were kids and a genuinely cool dude. You’ve out done yourself Rick! Rock and roll
See his interview on Musician`s Hall Of Fame on here. There`s a lot of great stuff on there. The host recently passed and he was collecting so much valuable info on there.
Steve got that old-school 70's and 80's vibe in his personality --- the kind of dude you just wanted to sit on the back porch and share some beers with him and watch him just jam on his guitar with whatever came in his head --- lots of laughs and just hanging out!
Exactly Christopher I was wondering if I really had an hour and 22 minutes and it was entirely riveting. I can listen to this kind of stuff all day and I'm not even a guitar player. I'm a drummer.
Steve Lukather is an amazing story teller and his passion for music is legendary. This may go down as one of my favorite Beato interviews ever - Sam Miller
This is the absolute best interview I've ever seen with Steve Lukather. It seems like he's really excited to do this and is having fun. I just love hearing these stories of how these legendary musicians came up with this incredible music in a time where you had to have serious talent because you didn't have the computers to create it. And Jesus, that solo at the end that he improvised over that backing track, I had chills running throughout my body, WOW. Rick Beato has hit another one out of the park with this interview and like I said before, Rick Beato is the best music channel on UA-cam.
If you haven't seen it you might enjoy The Wrecking Crew documentary. Goes deep into a lot of of the people that Steve was discussing. Amazing talent level.
@@ChuckChrome oh yeah, The Wrecking Crew is legendary and it's were some of the greatest Talent came out of including Glen Campbell who was an amazing guitars himself. Crazy all the albums that they played on and didn't get credit for and a lot of people don't even know. A lot of those mid-60s bands that came out of Laurel Canyon had The Wrecking Crew playing on them.
It is sad when someone has so much talent, has done so much hard work to hone his craft but (apart from Toto I guess) hasn’t been financially rewarded commensurately for the stuff he did. Yet someone can do something on Instagram with little work and earns millions. Luke is a freakin’ legend and his legacy will last beyond the social media cycle.
Of course we want to hear what Steve has to say; however, it would be nice if Rick could have asked a complete question without an immediate interruption.
I’m 66 now been playing since 1967. I never knew Steve played on all these famous tunes. One of my top 10 guitarist growing up with ToTo. Great interview guys! Thx.
When he starts playing to that backing track, you can see the instant transformation into full on musician mode. He listens for 1 second, then talent, instinct, and inspiration just takes the wheel.
This will go down as one of the best ever interviews with Steve. What a humble down-to-earth human and so gracious. Well done Rick and appreciate the channel.
Absolutely love Steve Lukather. He is such a generous and humble person despite his incredible resume and all around musical talent. I’ve never seen him give a bad interview he is just such a joy to listen to.
I love that about him (& others like him). I can't stand (for an example) 1980's Steve Vai "Look at me! I need attention 24 hours a day!!" schtick & stage routine (not mocking the guys playing & these days he is way chill compared to the DLR era - another guy I can't stand btw).
Rick has become to music what James Lipton was with Inside The Actors Studio, letting the outsiders into the artists' worlds in a way that was NEVER available to us. These interviews are a Godsend.
People do not really understand who Steve Lukather is and what mark and contributions he has left on the music world, a true musician, true guitar player in every sense. His life experiences and stories are amazing. I could sit and listen to him for hours and hours and hours. I could rewatch this 10 more times and learn something new.
@Whiskers B listen to Toto 4. Great album. Look his playlist of sessions up. Dancing on the ceiling, Lionel Ritchie. Physical, Olivia Newton John. Loads of hits.
What a great interview - My dad was Steve's (along with the Porcaros) music teacher at Grant High in Van Nuys. Imagine having Toto in your concert band :D
This has become in my top 3 favorite musical interviews I have ever seen in my life. My dad has been a studio musician my entire life specializing in steel guitar so hearing these recording session stories are among my favorite. Luk is probably one of the best story tellers I’ve ever heard. Thank you for all you’re doing for the music community and all the information you’re getting out there about the greatest musical times in history!
This is a gift! Rick Beato, you are a gift to all of us who love the history of music, and for me especially the history of the studio musician scene I would have loved to be a part of. Toto is probably my favorite band along with Steely Dan. I long for stuff like this, The Wrecking Crew, all of that stuff. Thank you Steve Lukather for being such a fantastic musician and human being, and the same goes for you Rick. I just can't say enough, Bravo!!
You don't see him much but he is so good. Fun to hear he and listen to Steve. First class guy who knows his fretboard inside and out . definite treat here . Thank you Steve and Rick.
What a down to earth man he seems to be for a virtuoso that he is. Not a drop of useless pride. Doesn't put himself on a pedestal. One of the guys. Heartful of soul. Lovely.
No one in this planet approaches guitar like Lukather. The taste, the choice of notes, the tempo, the melody. And he carries so much soul with him. Not to mention when he SINGS and PLAYS, specially the ballads. What a WORLD CLASS MONSTER MUSICIAN. God bless you man
The way he absolutely wilds out on "Runnin' With The Night" is EPIC. Special mention to the closer on "Rosanna". The Studio Master with The Feel for the stage.
I got to play drums one night at a show with Larry Carlton and Terry McMillian with no rehearsal at a club called Cafe Milano in Nashville. Talk about sitting high on a drum stool watching and listening to every note hoping not to make a mistake. One of the greatest musical highlights of my life.
Luke needs more time, maybe a monthly visit - he has soo much to offer and once again Rick lets his guest express themselves while having a fantastic plan of content. Someone said it already, this was a master class! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
This interview just brings a smile to the face. Luke has SO much experience, wisdom and stories and he is SO generous with it all. God bless you Rick for having this lovely human being on your channel. I dont think anyone would protest you bringing Luke back on numerous times in the future. Happy 2023 to you all.
Wow! Steve has such humility when he speaks of The Beatles as if they were sent from Heaven, but I have seen Toto perform countless times and they are incredible. They are truly one of the greatest bands to ever exist. (Moreover, he echoes the sentiment of many "Greats" when it comes to mastering music: don't skip the fundamentals. Go back to the basics everyone! =))
Beatles bearly knew music theory. If I can remember, Rick or some other music channel did that samething on the Beatles on how much music theory did they know.
@@henrys.6864 yet Steve considers them as some sort of “God sent” group of people. It underlines how important creativity also is…they were true pioneers. People such as my 15 years old daughter being a Beatles fan in 2023 probably echoes his sentiment🙏🏻
@@morbidmanmusic you mean Steve confuses you? His comment about basics wasn’t about reading music. It was more like…he was strumming a tight, simple rock tune.:))
i saw them play twice on the Tambu tour, after having seen steve vai of which i knew ToTo more, but seeing vai technical ability is one thing, but seeing Lukather and ToTo was technical with feeling, steve is a mighty mechanic of music, and so incredibly musically switched on and it shows in everything he touches. if someone doesn't have respect for Steve it's because they do not know what and who he is, the Music Man, and i can't respect someone who cannot respect him!
lol Rick your patience is amazing. Steve isn't trying to be rude he just interrupts and takes over because he's just such a big hearted kid when it comes to music and guitar playing and it's nice to see him still have that spirit! Thank you for allowing him to demonstrate that in this interview!
That was a very good way of addressing that, @Tony Telfort. I had to look past it, too, but knowing his background and seeing him be real helped with that. And then it becomes a pure joy to witness two experienced, savvy musicians and pros "talk shop". Fabulous!
@@carverac Yes and no... I just feel like there were many floating points that come into the light and then fade to the next point, creating a warmth that both of these musicians are familiar with; it's called live performance. There is no predefined structure; they both know that they want to have fun and build a bit of banter (musically speaking - Tension) and they don't need to resolve every phrase. It's a rare and beautiful thing in my opinion :)
A year later and my third or fourth view and this is still an AMAZING interview! I could listen to Luke tell stories all day. Rick, the way you stay out of the way but keep him on track is next level. Love this! And yes, the Gilmour interview was incredible.
Steve is so humble. He is a master and he would rather shine the light on someone else. He is one of the greatest musicians on the planet! Thank you for the awesome interview Rick!
Thank you for not filtering Steve's colorful language. His authenticity and passion comes through loud and clear. And Steely Dan... They were always on the radio when i was growing up, so I just took them for granted. It's amazing how much better they have gotten in the past 40 years. 😉 Most of the music from that time sounds dated but theirs is really timeless.
How do you not LOVE this? Legend Lukather, sitting with Rick, and both of them letting it RIP. It just does not get any better than this, people. I could not be more grateful to you both for this gift. 🔥🙏🏻❤
I am a little ashamed to admit that I had never heard of Steve Lukather but was completely engaged and mesmerised listening to this interview. Amazing stuff.
Mind completely blown. Luke is 65, I am 68, every thing he talked about I lived those records when they came out. It was like "this is your life of music" as told by someone on the inside. I have to watch this 50 more times. Huge respect, new respect and new appreciation for/of Steve....wow. Thank you Rick!!!
Lukather is a fantastic storyteller and Rick is the most gracious interviewer. Really enjoyed how devoid of pretension this interview was. It feels like meeting old friends for drinks and talking until dawn. Luke is a legend and it's good to see he's comfortable in his skin - natural hair looks great!
@@cherrysunburst1959 A bit off center, yeah, they are not on the same page right off the bat. Rick is the only guy (I believe) that these "living legends" recognize as a real peer of theirs, a monster musician. Every interview he does ends up being a real treat. That shows just how much respect professionals in the music industry have for Rick.
I keep watching this video as many others. Luke is absolutely larger, far larger than life. When he is around, magic really happens in every sense. And Rick... Well I don't think we never will be able to repay you for all the good and happiness you are bringing to our lives, Every time life is hard, watching your material is a relief and a huge deal of hope. Much love to the man from Rochester.
This interview was just like a great song: made me happy, sad, comforted me, brought me memories, surprised me with some unexpected modulations in between, and taught me a lot! Steve is an absolute legend (he's so talented you tend to forget he is also an amazing singer)! Having him humbly sharing all these treasures with us is such a blessing!
Great comment. Articulated it beautifully. Luke is an underrated singer (or just not well known for that talent). He has lived an amazing life and his memory (after massive quantities of drugs) is amazing. Loved all the stories and insights. I think this is Ricks best interview.
Lukather is a living guitar legend and yet such an approachable guy and obviously decent human being. How can a guy be that famous and yet remain so remarkably humble? Thank you, Rick, for sharing this conversation.
This is the second time I've sat and taken this in and it still kills me 😢...So, great, so sweet , so humble. Luke could talk forever... Thank You So.. So...Much...Rick...
I truly LOVED this episode. Luke has been a favourite musician of mine for decades. To hear his stories, his self-effacing humour, and watch his masterful playing, all left a warm feeling in my heart. The best to you, Luke.
I can honestly say that this is the first 90 minute interview of a musician that I wish was twice, no, make that three times longer! Great interviewer, great interviewee. Thank you so much!
This was probably the greatest interview of a musician I've ever watched. Full stop. So much information. So many golden nuggets. Man, the '70s and '80s, and the L.A. studio scene. All those absolute monsters. Only one regret. Towards the end, Luke mentions that there aren't many new players, or new music, that advance the harmonic game. (I'm paraphrasing.) It was a perfect lead in for Rick to bring up Guthrie Govan, the ultimate example of what they were describing at that moment. I really wish Rick would have mentioned Guthrie. They needed to talk about him. They talked about basically everyone else, including people like Tim Henson, but GG needed to be mentioned there. I thought for sure Rick would jump on it, but nope, he let the moment pass. Rick, whatever you have to do, make a full-length GG interview like this one happen. You're the one to do it. It has to be you. As thoughtful and articulate as GG is, it will be a Mt. Olympus-level interview. The one he did with Lee from Anderton's a few years ago was great, but Lee can't talk guitar/music the way you do. Now that you've met GG, and made the "Scariest guitarist in rock" video, this has to happen.
Right. Although I think he mentions Tim Henson in the sense that he has an "arrangers ear". I don't like TH music to be honest, not my style. But I can hardly doubt the guy makes incredible intricate arrangements.
Love it when...during the interview, they play their instrument. Steve is absolutely amazing and hope to hear him play for years and years. Great interview Rick.
@@CanYouDig not necessarily. In this instance, perhaps, but I've seen a friend of mine, who's a professional guitarist, to just start playing on completely never heard of track that i provided and gotten the idea of it within 5-10 seconds. It's an amazing skill that's been hones to razor edge by playing 8 hours a day (I've witnessed him practicing daily, it's crazy) over decades and audiating, composing, reading music... understanding chords and modes... it's not a skill you get by just noodling around aimlessly. And he's done this multiple times... so it's completely possible thing to do.
Check out The Police guitar man Andy Sumner. I´m from Sweden so maybe it is more fun for a 62 year European. Still amazing and fun. Rick Beato brings out the stories.
I'm so pleased you name-dropped "White Sister," my all-time favorite Toto song. I was listening to it yesterday and the piano--although simple--brought me to tears.
What an AMAZING hour and 22 minutes I just spent! Luke is the most humble, down to earth legend that you'd ever want to meet. You could tell Steve was really digging the vibe and was a true fan of Rick's also.
What a treat! This is the first interview of Steve I've seen and I'm amazed by his memory at 65 and especially by his humility. "I remember Allan Holdsworth...I'm not good enough to curl up his cables." Just wow.
Maestro Lukather is an absolute legend. That improvised instrumental ending was pure genius. Love his stories. Thank you so much for another priceless interview, Rick.
Steve is simply the greatest dude. Sitting on one of the most ludicrously jam packed collections of amazing tunes, but constantly talking up how incredible other players are. Love these long form interviews, some of the best viewing for musicians anywhere.
To see you guys face to face is awesome! I’ve been a Steve and TOTO fan for more years than I care to say… Thank you Rick-you are genuinely a treasure for all of us! 👊🏻😎😎👊🏻
Steve is such a melodic master that sometimes his talent is thought of as a genetic gift rather than incredible desire, focus, hard work, tenacity and a musical curiosity that continues till this day. Thank you Steve Lukather for climbing that hill and planting your flag. Your call contributions will live forever.
What a legend! A friend of mine and I met Steve Lukather just weeks ago in Champaign, IL, by chance when we walked out of a restaurant. Also if it was freezing cold, he took his time for taking a picture and having a quick talk. Just awesom! He was impressed that we flew all the way from Germany for the Toto and Journey concert. He is an absolute legend and meeting him was really one of my most special moments of my whole life
Great for you! Love it. Around ten years ago Chris Rea did a massive work of blues and art and then tour. To my surprise the band didn´t come to Sweden so me and my wife had to sacrifice and fly to Amsterdam. There is only two ways to travel safe; Music and Hockey.
Steve Lukather is such a pure person, it almost brings a tear to the eye to sit and listen to him. Lots of love to Rick Beato and his viewers from Australia!
One of the great privileges in life is to have been around when the music being discussed was being recorded and released to the public for the first time and decades later in 2023 to be able to sit back for an hour and a half to hear something as wonderfully interesting as this. Thank you Mr Beato and Thank you Mr Lukather and yes, thank you UA-cam. What a great way to start the evening.
The Lionel Richie riff at the end was amazing in 1983' and even more amazing today. I was impressed with the Dean Parks and David Hungate comment that Steve made. These guys were GREAT readers because they had played at the North Texas One O'Clock Lab Band in college. All of us that went through the UNT system had to read and it just made us better.
That was a PHENOMENAL and riveting interview, full of wisdom, hilariousness, lessons, history, the human condition, success, humility, nostalgia, biographies of heroes, the creative process, all beyond words! Bravo! 👏👏👏👏 Gratitude, Luke and Rick!❤🎉🙏🏼🌞
I have watched this interview at least three times. It hasn't gotten old yet. Steve is like an old friend that you can't get enough of. The man is so much fun, down-to-earth and an inspirational individual - so unassuming. Toto is my favourite band of all time, from their debut album to present. Never get tired of listening to their music - such a unique sound. Every song is so different; Sometimes, I just play a marathon of their songs in my car for the whole day! They're so good! Wish I could have met these fellas. Thank you Steve for the music and being such an inspiration to many young musicians. May you continue to us fans great music. Peace man.
I cannot STOP watching this interview!! And I don’t want it to end. Every name drop by Steve has me scrambling to Spotify to discover things new to me. And I’m laughing my ass off at his anecdotes. It’s just…perfect. 🙏🏼 Thank you, RICK!
Came in to say exactly this! What a blast - I'll be rewatching to catch the name drops I missed in my rabbit hole diving! So good. Domo arigato, Rick Beato!
One of the best out there and so humble. Speaks more about others then his own achievements in this interview. Love to hear a lot more about his great solos, but also his singing, which is often a underrated part of his career. I'll Be Over You is such a wonderful Lukather TOTO song.
Doesn't even feel like an interview. Feels like we are all just sitting and listening to two friends having a great conversation. Thank you both! Love the channel Rick and love all things Toto!
What a wonderful person! He’s like a genius and a rambunctious puppy at the same time. The smile on his face when he plays, how can you love something after doing it all your life? I know nothing about playing an instrument, but I’ve noticed something in common with another musician I follow, Tom Bukovac. They are real, natural, people lovers, and they’re grateful to their mentors, and love to communicate, love to talk music. And they are true to themselves; they’re comfortable with their skills. Not boasting, just comfortable with their natural, hard earned skills. And they seem to play in service to the song
Well said. So humble. Got to see Toto open for Journey last year. First time in my entire life I got to see both bands. Toto was incredible. They were beyond tight and they really enjoyed being on stage and playing. It was fantastic.

These interviews will be a treasure for eternity. These guys are legends.
@@LeGrandeOrange These session players probably have contributed more to music than artists like RHCP, Nirvana, AC/DC, you name it.
@@LeGrandeOrangenah lukather had great technique as well . His speed whike keeping to an actual rythym is at another level .
He’s not just a guitarist. He’s a genius musician.
It's unreal what a loveable person he is. The fact that he maintained this level of humbleness and down-to-earth attitude over THIS career and musical greatness truly warms my heart.
Thank you, Luke, thank you, Rick - that was 82 minutes of my life well spent.
Well put. Both of these guys are for real.
It's true. He spent more time singing the praises of other musicians (including Rick) than anything else.
Mkay?

Think of it as something to look forward too...
O.M.G. I saw this pop up on my way to bed and now I'm getting to sleep an hour and 22 minutes late. This was the greatest interview/conversation I have ever seen with Luke. How could you not just love this guy? He is so real, humble, self-effacing and brilliantly talented. Rick, you have become THE ambassador between us everyday players and our heroes/influences. I cannot thank you enough for what you do. I know you do it because you love it and - because you can. There is only one Rick Beato, and we are so grateful to have you.
Totally didn’t get to sleep either because of this
Easily the best guitar player ever!
Couldn’t have said it any better.
Absolute truth.
Me either. Best conversation I ever recall.
For me, this is the best interview in the universe. It's like being down the pub with Luke and sitting there, head in hands, listening to this guy telling you the story of your teenage musical dreams. One of the best 90 mins I've ever spent.
Awesome 🤩 😎

This is a masterclass musician interview. No BS, no PR, just a discussion about and true passion for the music... and some playful stories along the way. Great job.
Absolutely and that’s what makes Ricks interviews so unique. Be it Billy Corgan, Sting, Tim Henson,… - they all feel that this is about music/passion, no record-/tour-promotion or whatever.

One of the greatest musical highlights of my life.

i saw them play twice on the Tambu tour, after having seen steve vai of which i knew ToTo more, but seeing vai technical ability is one thing, but seeing Lukather and ToTo was technical with feeling, steve is a mighty mechanic of music, and so incredibly musically switched on and it shows in everything he touches. if someone doesn't have respect for Steve it's because they do not know what and who he is, the Music Man, and i can't respect someone who cannot respect him!
lol Rick your patience is amazing.

Rick, first class, thank you for a great visit with the King!

I am watching this Lukie interview for the 4th time. He is so freaking gentle and kind.
This should be a 5 part series. I love listening to Lukather tell stories. He's the coolest dude on the planet.
Peace man.
This interview is a guitar lesson within itself. To have someone like Steve explain his writing style is a tremendous help.
I cannot STOP watching this interview!! And I don’t want it to end. Every name drop by Steve has me scrambling to Spotify to discover things new to me. And I’m laughing my ass off at his anecdotes. It’s just…perfect. 🙏🏼 Thank you, RICK!
Yeah, I had to swing by Spotify a time or two also. Great stories from a great guy.
me too, found 3-4 new rabbit holes, love it, this dude has known them all.
Came in to say exactly this! What a blast - I'll be rewatching to catch the name drops I missed in my rabbit hole diving! So good. Domo arigato, Rick Beato!
Yes, it was TOO SHORT!
Watch the video from Sunset Studios where he talks about his great stories for over an hour. Great suff.
I could listen to this forever. I keep checking the time because I don’t want it to end.
Exactly my sentiment. I’ll have to watch it again
The most educational, most inspiring, most enjoyable 82 minutes I've spent in a few decades. Thank you, gentlemen.
Your comment is one of the best ones that I have ever seen. You are spot-on about most everything you said man! Cheers!
Well said. So humble. Got to see Toto open for Journey last year. First time in my entire life I got to see both bands. Toto was incredible. They were beyond tight and they really enjoyed being on stage and playing. It was fantastic.
I watch Uncle Larry too, great podcast.
