I love joni so much, I have always held her to such a high standard because I have always considered her her the absolute pinnacle of her craft. I found myself sobbing during that performance. We have been entertained by an angel on earth
Try "Black Crow" or "Free Man in Paris" from the same album An All Star lineup in this album Once in a lifetime (Jaco, Lyle, Michael Brecker, Don Alias) Only ones living sadly are Pat & Joni Don't stop with this one!! A LOT to explore on this album Love this version of Amelia with PM subtle haunting guitar
The absolute Maestro she is. I never fail to have tears rolling down my cheeks when I watch her perform this stunning song, it is one of the all time great moments in music, as is this whole show. The whole band is out of this world. Thank you for doing this!
I was fortunate to have attended the Shadows and Light show Joni gave at the Greek in L.A. Yes it was a unique moment in musical history as so many elements came together which never would again. We shed tears of gratitude that it happened and it was captured and we can still experience this incredible thing.

A very beautiful and sad song related to the break-up of her relationship to her then partner, John Guerin, who plays drums on the original track from the 'Hejira' album. You'll be interested to know that Larry Carlton originally played the lead guitar on this track with Victor Feldman on vibraphone (both Steely Dan session musicians). However, this performance from the 'Shadows and Light' live performances, is exquisite and Pat's lovely solo at the end makes it all the more special. Thank you for playing it Nick & Alexia.
Jaco Pastorious was also part of that touring band. ….acknowledged as one of the best bass players ever…..This entire concert is on UA-cam. You have a Patreon channel, yes? This concert should be watched in entirety as a reaction. It was an outdoor concert, and the entire vibe was wonderful.
One of those magical, 'what if musician X and musician Y' would play together.......... Everything about this song, and this music is just perfect..... Great choice for a reaction...👍👍👍👍👍👍.... Cheers Bob......
This is such a treat! I've only seen a handful of videos featuring Joni live, plus she's playing an electric guitar!!! First time I've seen that. I'm always mesmerized from her performances. Plus Pat Metheny?!?! What an exceptional day this is. Thanks Nick, Lex and R. Gray.
So cool when Nick reacts to Pat´s guitar just after Lyle comes in with the Oberheim pad....and all the other best emotional moments...and yes they gave the whole world a gift... the whole concert is just fantastic, thanks to Jaco
Great reaction to this incredible performance. I was very fortunate to see this tour in person. My friends and I went and had mediocre seats on the lawn at an outdoor pavilion and were still so blown away that we went back the next night with no tickets! We told the girl at the ticket booth that we had to come back because it was so great and asked her what she had in available tickets. She smiled and gave us seemingly VIP tickets. I've never heard of this before or since but they set up folding chairs in front of the front row! I was literally about 10 ft. directly in front of Joni! This was an experience I'll remember until my last breath. Joni's talent and beauty was jaw dropping and I'm a huge fan of the entire band. I've seen Metheny over 50 times and met Pat and Lyle multiple times (super nice guys). Anyway, so cool to see you both so moved by this performance and I agree completely! Keep up the great reactions and you have yourself a new subscriber.
I saw this tour about two weeks before this concert was filmed at Red Rocks, Colorado on a beautiful September evening. Only great jazz musicians could do justice to Joni's music. She wore a dress that wafted in the soft evening breeze. Pat, Lyle, Jaco, Michael Brecker, and Don Alias. Heaven.
I am so thankful that my life overlapped with these beautiful people and the beautiful music they made together - and that i can hear it clearly - time passes so quickly - thank goodness for the music to make the journey more beautiful.
I had the great privilege to see the newly formed "Pat Metheny Group" with Lyle Mays in 1978 in a small Coffee House at UC Davis, sitting first row, barely 6 feet from Pat Metheny when he opened with "San Lorenzo". I have never been so high walking out of a concert, as was the entire crowd. I commented to my girl friend as we were filing out that it had been an amazing performance, and most of the people within ear shot piped up with agreement. It was the best live performance I was ever blessed to attend.
I love watching you love her. I was at a performance of this tour and my friends and I also spontaneously welled up with tears throughout. Hejira is an AMAZING album. I’d look over to my friend Carin like you two look to each other and our eyes would be wet. It was overwhelming.
I have seen Pat Metheny 6 times since 1986 (First Circle) and I wish I could have seen this show with Joni and Jaco- must have been incredible to see that live show. Joni is an amazing artist and musician and seeing this video really shows off her guitar playing- thank you for sharing
I was 23 and saw this concert "Shadows And Light" at the Concord Pavilion in early 1980, at the end of this tour, after Santa Barbara. it was so peaceful and groovy. It was the first concert I went to that had Jumbotrons on stage. This is Joni at her apex. She shot video for this concert, and I recommend watching the whole concert. Very 70's, completely different than when I saw Led Zeppelin in Chicago at the stockyards, which was a blaze.
Amelia Earhart is a legendary figure to people a little older than you two and her home town of Atchison Kansas isn't far from Lees Summit Missouri where Pat Metheny grew up. Her remarkable life and mysterious disappearance was one of the greater human stories of the 20th century. I bought this Shadows and Light DVD just to know that I could forever watch it whenever I pleased. Joni's guitar playing is absolutely magical. I played guitar for many years, but honestly half the time I can't figure out what she is doing.
I saw this tour the night before filming - 9/8/79 SF Civic. My favorite live performance I've seen by anyone hands down...the whole band was incredible, but Jaco in particular was absolutely astonishing...forever grateful I was there. Hope you guys do a reaction to the entire (Santa Barbara) show 👍🔥🔥🔥🌋
I did miss this tour but caught Pat on tour supporting the first Pat Metheny Group album where he announced he would be touring that summer with Joni. I remember his encore that evening was something new, American Garage.
Many performers were friends then and Joni would at times appear during a CS&N concert. When a Jefferson Airplane had to shut down their show here at 11 pm they told the crowd the Grateful Dead were performing at a college nearby and they were going to join them. The two groups jammed into the wee hours
Joni will get you one way or another. So many levels, so many approaches. If the lyricism doesn't move you, the story will, or the poetry will, or the beauty of the music will do it, or the inflection and sound of her voice, or the virtuosity of the musicians. We can't make it out alive. Joni sees to that.
Stumbled on this clip a few month’s ago - such a wonderful performance of one of my favourite tracks off Hejira…and hey: check out the band😉!! Thank you. Glad you got to react to it, having done the studio version of Amelia and as others have said, hope you get a chance to see the whole show🤞🏼. Loved it‼️🇨🇦❤️🙏🏼
I think I saw this show on the TV almost 40 years ago and this song has stayed with me ever since. Joni at her beautiful ethereal best. Reading some of the earlier comments reminds you of the impact her music has had on so many of us.
This is the most personal song for me in all of popular music. I spent 7 years living on the road after wife left. Working all across America, this was my song. Working on projects, flying back and forth every 2 weekends to see my daughter for years. As Joni sang, "your life becomes a travelogue of picture postcard charms." "So this is how I hide the hurt, as the road leads, cursed and charmed.' "***Maybe I've never really loved; I guess that's just the truth. I've spent my whole life in clouds at icy altitudes.***" Joni Mitchell, portrayer of the beautiful pain of my road life. How does she write like this??? I have to wonder, how many other road warriors have stumbled across this work of art (it's not exactly a pop hit) and felt their jaws drop to the floor. This, and Hejira, and Refuge of the Roads are exactly what life on the road it like.
@@NicknLex Thank you, hugs received!. You have shared your lives with us. This piece, is like it is mi corazon. Probably flew 300,000 miles in those 7 years; a lot of time 'in clouds at icy altitudes'. It was truly as if she'd been hiding in my suitcases. Am off the road at present, doing remotely what I did on the road. Yet still in limbo at the moment, remembering that strange wanderlust.
Guys, you made me feel so emotional through your reaction to Joni Mitchell and the youngs Pat and Lyle on an amazing performance! I'm glad that internet allows us meeting people like you, guys! I'm not alone! Thank you, indeed! 🙏
Thank YOU for your love and support! And you are definitely not alone; as long as we have this channel you are welcome to reach out! 💗 Be well and happy, Lex :)
Joni could have played it safe like most pop musicians; make the record and then go out on tour and play it exactly the same, every show. But instead Joni takes risk...starts the painting and allows jazz musicians to add their unique colors to the painting. Very generous, risky, and wonderfully collaborative. She may have lost "pop fans" who were stuck in one place, but she ultimately elevated her work. No risk, no gain.
I understand that you both got emotional, sometimes when music is just so good it takes you there,,,,, that band she had was just so unbelievably GREAT,,,, how I wish I could of seen that tour,,, I have the DVD of this show and watch I it several times a year it just that good, so glad you enjoyed it the way I do!!
Join Mitchell an earth angel 😇 ❤ love her so much! She's enriched our hearts and souls beyond an words I can convey ❤ Thank you so much Nick and Lex 👏👏👏R Gray thank you brother ❤ great suggestion ❤
We lived in the time of Joni Mitchell. I have said this quite often in my life, but I must credit Brandi Carlisle for bringing this reality/statement to a mass of hearts and souls. There's one Joni Mitchell and there we have it. Thank you.
Played the SHADOWS AND LIGHT album to death. Superb musicianship - Pat Metheny, Lyle Mays, Jaco Pastorius, Michael Brecker - from memory. And Joni at the absolute peak of creativity. Check out a track called PAPRIKA PLAINS - absolute beauty. And MINGUS is a superb album.
I was very blessed to Joni live twice in my life! In 1976 it was my first seeing her live! It was also my first date with my future wife. We later went and seen her live again in 1979. Joni Mitchell what a treasure she is! Thanks for reacting to this wonderful track, you two are a class act! A beautiful track to check out #nicknlexrequest Chelsea Morning
If you haven't heard Rick Beato's breakdown of the studio version of this song on youtube, you should. It is episode 91 of "What Makes this Song Great." Rick's musical knowledge is amazing.
Yes, I saw it at the Hollywood bowl and watched the concert many times over on UA-cam. Amelia still brings tears to my eyes. I hope @NicknLex have had a chance to watch the whole show. 💞
Beautiful voice, beautiful music. For my birthday in 2020 I got Pat Metheny tickets, concert was postponed to 2021, then to 2022 ... I hope it's gonna happen now on May 4th, wish me luck :-)
One of the best live concert recordings I've ever seen. Joni will go down in history in a competition between Dylan as the greatest songwriter of the 20th century and I personally will take Joni all day long.
Pausing a slow-motion flurry of pensive wool-gathering, I thought I’d stop by to see what you two might’ve posted today. Man, timing is everything! As the consummate hosts of “the panacea channel” (my sobriquet), your choice to air this performance of “Amelia” couldn’t have been better... thank you both (and R.Gray for the request). I’d wasted the last coupla hours looking for uncommon denominators, but watching today’s installment patched my day up nicely. You’re humbly & graciously magnifique! :>)
Anyone who mentions Joni's "Blue" the first time I hear their voice is all right with me. As one who bought it on vinyl as a new release, I salute your good taste. She is one of my very few idols. She told me people misunderstand her the way they do me. I thought I loved her maximally before that moment, but I was wrong again. One of the voices of the human heart, Joni Mitchell.
I have really loved wathing you guys fall in love with one of my favorites in Steely Dan. In my opinion one of their best songs ever was not one that was released to radio but it grew as a fan favorite just from listening to the album. I haven't found it on your channel but if you'd like another shot of Steely Dan goodness Please allow me to request "Black Cow". *Chef's kiss*. I can't wait to watch!!! OH and just FYI a "Black Cow" is simply a glass of Coca Cola with ice cream and a few other ingredients in it. often called a "Coke FLoat"
Great song. Must have been an incredible concert. It’s ok to choke up at beautiful music. My college roommate had Hejira and it was so different from her folky stuff. Great late night album. Before Lofi Girl there was Joni and Hejira.
The entire Court and Spark album is so great I don't have words. As a singer / song- writer, she is right up there with the best, the two Paul's and Dylan, not to mention Gerry Rafferty.
Wow! So glad you watched this! I'd mentioned it with your first Amelia listen and your reaction was blissful. Oh and Nick, I like interchange of old Amelia footage with the song as if Joni and Amelia are avian sisters and there's a really moving moment in this interchange when Joni sings "Amelia, it was just a false alarm" and Amelia looks right at the camera as if feeling Joni's dilemma with love and the love of travel. This whole concert is stunning, a beautiful outdoor event that you should both watch. It's called Shadows and Light.
You must listen to the whole Shadows and Light album. There are two versions, one heavily edited, one pretty much the whole concert. The list of brilliant musicians who took part is incredible. This was just one part of an amazing experience.
I'm not sure if it was the addition of the extended film footage of Amelia Earhart (which I've never seen) to Joni and Pat's beautiful playing/singing, but this made me really emotional. I've watched the Shadows and Light live concert before (which you HAVE to watch!), but I don't remember ever having seen this part.
I was hoping you might get around to this sooner or later. I had the double album on vinyl since 1980, and the whole DVD, which Joni also produced, (highly recommended) for many years. As one critic simply put it, 'they should have stayed together'. I'm no guitarist but didn't take long to spot Pat's unusual pick (or method, or both?). This song segues into 'Hejira'. Your reaction was well, pretty much as expected from such astute music lovers. RIP Lyle Mays, Michael Brecker.
Joni, Pat and Lyle. The height of muscianship. My wife and I just saw Pat last month here in Asheville, NC with his new “Side Eye” trio. Pat brought my wife to tears. Yes…we are blessed to witness their genius. You guys are the only ones that review Pats music…keep it up. Actually the song is about Joni…not so much Amelia…ifs about Joni’s wonderlust and how It correlates to that of Amelia Erhart’s death in her attempt to fly around the world.
I have very much enjoyed this concert footage over the years, and it is a genuine treat to all my senses. What a great reaction to legendary performers and a song about such a legendary aviation giant. There is a lot of great music from Joni with this exceptional group along with the late great Jaco Pastorius. Thank you for doing this one!
This bass player jaco also made opus pocus, (opus pocus bass solo is at 1:56) also watch his live in montreux 1976 weather report video. Skip to Cannonball after elegant People and Scarlett woman and basically the whole show is classic in that video. havona from the heavy weather album, that bass solo is at 2:30
It is so cool you guys have been checking out Joni Mitchell! I love her so much. She is my very favorite along with Yes and Steely Dan. Great job guys!
Yeah! This is so wonderful!😍 Pleeease do Jericho (Don Juan's Reckless Daughter version) like you said you would so long ago 😊 Joni and Jaco at their most wonderful collaboration❣️❤❤❤
I listen to the album all the time and think nothing of it. However, watching you two, I got emotional too! I This is why I love watching reaction videos from people who really love music. I love seeing other people get why I love certain music. Thanks for the beautiful moments, and thanks to Joni, she's always amazing!
Beautiful song. I love Lyle Mays - so sad he's gone. Joni performed a lot of music live with Pat Metheny and Jaco Pastorius where the musicians are more integrated with Joni than in this particular song. There's a lot that's well worth watching. Loved your reaction.
Joni, Pat Metheny, Lyle Mays, and Jaco Pastorius. What a dream team.
and Don Alias
This entire live show is worth a watch. Joni at her peak backed by a fabulous band.
Shadows and Light is transcendent. It stands up and will do so long after I am gone.
You should show more of this concert - to me it was Joni at the peak of her powers .
I love joni so much, I have always held her to such a high standard because I have always considered her her the absolute pinnacle of her craft. I found myself sobbing during that performance.
We have been entertained by an angel on earth
A beautiful reaction....thank you....bless you.
Pat's solo is Pure Magic - and there is no Keyboardist who fit Pat Metheny better than Lyle Mays [RIP] ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

I saw her on that tour, about a month before she recorded Shadows and Light. It was one of the best shows I've ever seen.
I was there. San Francisco 1979. Life changing. Love you guys
Hissing of Summer lawns is my favorite Joni album. Amazing journey,,,
I have really loved wathing you guys fall in love with one of my favorites in Steely Dan.
"They made the world a better place". - Have nothing better to say, Nick.
It really is a more meaningful experience watching music like this with you guys ! We all weren't able to be there but this is the next best thing !
Shadows and Light! One of THE great live albums. So great 😉
You must listen to the whole Shadows and Light album.
Actually the song is about Joni…not so much Amelia…ifs about Joni’s wonderlust and how
It correlates to that of Amelia Erhart’s death in her attempt to fly around the world.
One year ago and I still have very strong feelings listen and watch this with both of you, thank you. a lot. saludos desde Buenos Aires,
I have very much enjoyed this concert footage over the years, and it is a genuine treat to all my senses. What a great reaction to legendary performers and a song about such a legendary aviation giant. There is a lot of great music from Joni with this exceptional group along with the late great Jaco Pastorius. Thank you for doing this one!
The best of the best.
One of the greatest performances I've ever seen. This whole concert is remarkable.
I've not heard this before, but it is so great and wonderful to see your honest, emotional reaction. I appreciate your thoughtful comments.
This bass player jaco also made opus pocus, (opus pocus bass solo is at 1:56) also watch his live in montreux 1976 weather report video. Skip to Cannonball after elegant People and Scarlett woman and basically the whole show is classic in that video. havona from the heavy weather album, that bass solo is at 2:30
You two are such a joy. Thanks!
It is so cool you guys have been checking out Joni Mitchell! I love her so much. She is my very favorite along with Yes and Steely Dan. Great job guys!
Yeah! This is so wonderful!😍
Pleeease do Jericho (Don Juan's Reckless Daughter version) like you said you would so long ago 😊
Joni and Jaco at their most wonderful collaboration❣️❤❤❤
Top Joni tune! Hadn't heard/seen this version before either. 🙂
I have this concert on DVD. That band she has backing her are truly amazing! Pat, Jaco, Lyle, and Michael Brecker. What a killer band!
She is a treasure. Her lyrics, her cadence, her emotion, her voice! Thank you GOD for Joni Mitchell
Been binging you guys having a lot of fun love love love this Joni Masterpiece
Thanks , Pat's. ' Map of the World ' is one of my fav acoustic guitar pieces
Love this album…amazing!! Joni is a gift to us and Pat and Lyle my 2 heroes… thanks again for sharing this with a new generation
