This whole concert is worth taking in. Joni had a band behind her of jazz fusion studio all stars. Pat Metheny on guitar, Jaco Pastorius on bass, Lyle Mays on keys. Amazing piece of art.
Also Micheal Brecker on sax, Don Alias on drums and congas, and on a couple of tracks, The Persuasions on vocals/backing vocals.
David Letterman used to call his late night band on NBC The World's Most Dangerous Band. No. I think that title goes to Joni Mitchell's Shadows and Light band.
There is no one greater than Joni Mitchell. As for her guitar playing, she made up her own tunings so that she could play with her left hand, which was weakened by polio. She really is an innovative giant.
I'm a 65 year old Japanese, and I got a lot of surprises and joy from her music during this period. The backing band has the best members, and I'm a little lonely when I think about how many people can make this level of music right now.
In my opinion, one of the most beautiful songs ever written. And Joni has never looked more beautiful. This was a great concert.
That you two young people who are so into metal music can appreciate Joni Mitchell gives me hope for the future. Good on ya!
Saw this show at the Greek, my favorite venue. A priceless memory. One of the greats of all time and her musicians were of appropriate caliber to deliver these transcendent, unforgettable performances.
In Toronto? (If so, whatta' great venue!)
In L.A. It's like the Bowl but a bit more intimate. Great summer nights@@thomasdempsey721
There’s some magic quality about this song that always makes me emotional. The imagery of her lyrics, the wisdom in her voice, the meditative picking of her guitar. It’s perfection
This is what pure talent looks like.
One of the greatest female artists not only is she an extremely talented singer and musician but also an innovative and original song writer, but where she really impresses me is as a lyricist, her words are so thoughtful and evocative and for me this song is the
pièce de résistance👌
Just love her guitar playing. The whole package.
One of the most beautiful songs you will ever hear, IMHO. The lyrics, her sweet voice, her phrasing, her guitar playing, the passion!
A great song from a great album by one of the greatest artists of our time!
Cheers and thanx to you and Curt G from Australia!
PS: Not to neglect the guitar solo by the great Larry Carlton!
Guitar solo is by Pat Metheny
@@dangoodwin2635 Yeh i should have qualified that. Its Larry Carlton on the studio album. Cheers!
@@micko11154 I'll take Larry or Pat any day.
Hejira is a stunning album, with the great Larry Carlton on guitar - taking a day off from being imperious with Steely Dan
I love how you guys embrace all genres of music and appreciate how great the music we grew up with in the '60s and '70s was and still is.
" and I slept on the strange pillows of my wander lust" Perfectly clear and perfectly simple.
Excellent Choice !!! JONI ROCKS !!!
i saw this tour a few weeks before this concert was filmed at Red Rocks, Colorado. Superb in every respect. And Joni wore a dress that night that wafted in the soft evening breeze.
Hope the spectators were aware they were in the presence of greatness.
Great minds think alike, and Joni attracted the best of the best
Joni, Pat, Lyle and Jaco. Oh my Universe...
I've been waiting for someone to do a reaction to this particular live version, thank you!!!
In my opinion, it's one of the most purely beautiful guitar solos I've ever heard. And Joni is utterly impeccable.
The guitar solo leads into another incredible song, "Hejira" which is also well worth a listen. Live version from this same concert with the all star backup band is just amazing...
Joni. Pat. Lyle. It will be 100 years before three musicians of this significance and impact will appear again.
Oh she is such a treasure along with Neil, Bruce, Leonard , Gordon, Anne, KD and on and on.............
If you ever get a chance, go to a Pat Metheny concert- it is surreal. People burst into tears in their seats- he is a healer. The expressions on your faces says it all.
Peak art peak performers. This concert is AMAZING.
Born in 65, I am a child of the 70's. Back then, I knew of her, maybe a song or 2 but I think her music was too adult for me to appreciate. She is an amazing talent and is someone I can now appreciate so much today. ps, Suzi, you're especially gorgeous. See you next time.
Exact same here, down to the birth year. I knew a few of her tunes I'd heard on the radio, and liked them; one day about 20 years ago I saw her "Hits" compilation and bought it: bliss ever since.
Suzi, this isn't a historical ballad about Amelia Earhart at all, she names checks her throughout but there is only one verse that deals specifically with Amelia and her disappearance. The other six verses are describing a very personal relationship gone wrong, and Travis at least acknowledges Joni is just making a connection, it's only in a metaphorical way, likening herself and Amelia's situation to something that had huge aspirations yet sadly vanished. Joni is pondering her life, looking out of a jet plane, traveling the world probably touring, heartbroken and having an imaginary heart to heart, confiding with the late aviation hero that this latest relationship wasn't to be the love of Joni's life after all, it was 'just a false alarm'.
Pat Metheny , guitar & Jaco Pastorius ,bass with her voice ,guitar enhancements, awesome !
Otherworldly talent......love everything Joni, such a trailblazer, fearless. Have you reviewed "Case of You"?
I want to thank "Amelia" for this reaction, who belongs to Joni Mitchell's "Shadows & Lights" tour with a huge band with jazz musicians, including Pat Metheny on the guitar solo and Lyle Mays (one of the greatest keyboardists recently disappeared and the perfect duet with Pat in the Pat Metheny Group), I suggest you react to a great PMG song called "The Roots of Coincidence" winner of the Grammy for best instumental rock song of 1998 and I also suggest react to the bass solo of the only Jaco Pastorius in the same Joni Mitchell concert that they have shown, I am sure it will surprise
Lyle didn't just disappear - he died. An absolutely stunning keyboardist.
'Joni and this guitar player' lol, yeah, that's only Pat Metheny, that was Lyle Mays on the synths/keys.
LOLOL
"this guitar player"... Metheny, one of the greatest...
This concert was probably one of the best live concerts...ever!
This song came out when I was living in Germany, and is one of my favorite songs on this album.
This is not a song it’s miracle
This is on the Album "Hejira," which means taking a sacred journey of self discovery.
The incredible Joni Mitchell! Joni surrounded herself with talent. In this concert she is accompanied by Pat Metheny (guitar), Lyle Mays (keyboards), and Jaco Pastorius (bass), to name a few. I just saw Pat Metheny, live, in concert, In San Francisco a few days ago. Pat has won 20 Grammy Awards in 10 different categories. Joni knows how to pick 'em.
The beautiful guitar solo is by Pat Metheny.
It's a beautiful song and we can all read our lives into it, quite emotional every time I hear it.
I think that was Pat Matheni briefly in the background. Beautiful song.
This is not really what I would call 'story-telling'. Joni is using Amelia's disappearance as a metaphor, ingeniously so, for her own experience in romantic relationships and the danger of 'flying too high', reaching too far. Sooner or later we must all come crashing down to earth. The ethereal Pat Methey solo at the end remains among his finest. The look of rapture on your faces is priceless.
Her good friend (and 'producer' of her first album) David Crosby recently covered this song, it's worth a listen. He can still sing after 50 years in the business.
Joni uses metaphors to tell us of her pain and false alarms. Then guitar flies us off into the stratosphere.
The lyric "Cactus Tree Motel" alludes to her song "Cactus Tree" from her very first album 'Song to a Seagull.' It's an awesome album!
There is a friendly contest among fans of Joni as to what they will recommend as her best work for reactors to devote their attention. For me, it is the wonderful folk-rock-jazz fusion sound of The Hissing of Summer Lawns and Hejira, when she had just about completed her migration from pure folk music to an electrified sound that incorporated other genres, especially jazz, into her compositions. I've never been a huge fan of folk music, and despite the moving lyrics of her early work, the music is just too spare for my taste. This live performance demonstrates how her move towards jazz affected the heroes of contemporary jazz from the mid-'70's as she readily attracted such greats as Pat Metheny. Lyle Mays, Michael Brecker, and Jaco Pastorius to go on tour with her.
Also, on these two albums her vocals are vastly improved, with a slightly lower pitch, and none of that annoying trill she frequently utilized in her earlier work.
Alas, Joni sort of went off the deep end with her journey into jazz with her next album, but later returned to a slightly more electrified version of her folk music roots that many fans consider to be some of her best work as her career began to wind down.
Overall, she is clearly the greatest female popular music artist of the 20th century with a vast catalog of varied work to prove it.
Beautiful song ( with the Great Pat Metheny on guitar with Joni)
Black Crow from this album is worth the listen.
You would do yourself a favor by listening to the entire Shadows & Light album (where this comes from)
An ALL STAR band backing her up here
Great spirit from you guys
I adore the two of you and your reactions. It's awesome to see your musical tastes are so broad and you can appreciate so many different varieties of musical artistry. Please keep on keepin' on. A true music lover enjoys it all like a banquet with many dishes. It MUST be said, though, that NOBODY writes like Joni. She makes everyone else look like amateurs.
The 50 year anniversary of the album Blue just past about two months ago!
Some other outstanding song writers from Canada: Stan Rogers, Gordon Lightfoot, and Ron Hynes.
SO THAT'S JONI'S GOOD FRIEND ( JACO PASTORIUS ) PLAYING THE BASS GUITAR. :) HE'S PASSED ON SADLY ENOUGH :( BUT HE PLAYED WITH HER ON HER 76 ALBUM ( HEJIRA ) :)
Рад видеть вас)))) ваши реакции лучшие 👍
Thanks for sharing this version.
The whole concert is great -- Joni, Jaco & other excellent Jazz players-- you can see the whole thing on youtube.
I think she disappeared over the Bermuda triangle. At least that's what I heard back in the 70s when I was coming up. Apparently there is something in that area that makes your dials go crazy😢 so she could not gauge where she was in the air. How sad😢❤
This guitar player? That's Pat f'in Methany!
That guitar player is a very young pat Metheny one of the greatest jazz guitarists of all time.
& thats Pat Metheny playing those subtle lead licks for her.......
Check out more Pat Metheny, the guitar player. You will not be disappointed.
I like the version of these songs live more than the studio versions on Hejira !!!
That was a very young Pat Metheny.
I highly recommend showcasing a Pat Metheny tune or 2, starting w/ Offramp.........
Read the lyrics
The song is really not about Amelia Earhart, notwithstanding the video footage.
Better yet read what joni herself said about the song- bottom line she said
the song is about her drive across the United States and the disintegration and breakup of her relationship with drummer john Guerin
Amelia is also the name of the daughter she gave up for adoption and later reconnected with. Which lends an additional power to the lyrics.
Pat Metheny is considered one of the greatest guitarists on the planet.
I am a big fan of Pat Metheny generally, but I just don't really think his solo fits in with the rest of the song that came before.
Big thumbs down for doing this really super slow live version from the 80s, instead of doing the original 1976 recording from the Hejira album. Disappointed!
