To give you a little background, Transitions is a brand of photochromic lenses. Photochromic lenses change from clear to sunglasses when exposed to US light. Transitions has several classes of photochromic lenses, and Xtractive is their line that gets the absolute darkest. They are especially helpful for those who drive a lot as they do get darker behind a car windshield (these have inherent UV protection) than the Gen 8 line or what many people will refer to as “regular transitions.”
And, not only do these lenses get nice and dark, they are now available in transitions xtractive new generation, a POLARIZED version, making them even better for driving. Remember my quest to find the best transitions for driving? I’ll link it here for you! But now, the game has changed and these lenses I’m about to unbox could be the best Transitions for driving yet!
I chose a larger size frame in my prescription sunglasses, for an oversized look because they will hopefully be a super functional sport sunglasses and I want them to look cool both when clear and as sunglasses. So in this exam room with no ambient UV light they do look clear. Let’s use this UV lamp to see how fast they change to dark!
Overall I am very excited about this new option from Transitions. Consider xtractive polarized lenses if: You drive a lot and the 6 o'clock glare drives you crazy!, You fish or are on the water a lot! Don’t get transitions if: You're a pilot!

I've had my xtraactive transions lenses for a week now, And I'm not noticing any difference when they turn to sunglasses or back to clear. Now today started with a lot of clouds took longer to get to sunglasses this morning, But they are great! They turn back to clear less then 5 minutes for me, And I don't even the notice the tint in the glasses,

Nice video, but something you didn't talk about is how dark they get inside a car. As you note the windshield blocks the UV which prevents the lenses from getting as dark as they do outside. If they don't get dark enough for driving then they're not really solving the problem. I find it easier to just switch into dedicated prescription sunglasses for driving.

Hello Doctor! Based on your experience. Which lens get extra darker outdoors? The Xtractive New Gen or Xtractive Polarized? I am quite disappointed with the Xtractive Polarized I purchased. It doesn’t seem to get as dark as the Hoya Sensity Dark lenses I have.

Your videos are so helpful, thank you for creating and sharing! Quick question, do the Transitions XTRActive Polarized block blue light? I was told that a blue light coating is needed but another source said that these lenses already block the harmful spectrum of blue light. Also, I wear gaming glasses (no prescription) with a yellow tint and was wondering if the XTRActive can be tinted, thus making my gaming glasses all-around-glasses. Also, my work commute is 1.5-2 hours and I'd like to stop worrying where each set of glasses (driving and gaming) are. Lol.

They aren't polarized when not activated and don't polarize without UV, so they won't be polarized behind the wheel of a car, or in front of a screen if you aren't also being exposed to direct UV (sunlight)

This is my understanding, also, but I keep seeing videos like this saying they polarize behind a windshield. The Transitions website even says “They do not polarize in the car since the windshield blocks UV rays.” Dr., can you confirm or deny this? Thanks.

Not so dark in car = not so polarized in car.
The photochromic chemical molecules line up as the polarized filter. = not so polarized in car = not effective enough.
Doc, if you see this, please can you bring 2 Xtractive Polar lenses in your car during a full sunny day? Allow maybe 2 mins+ to guarantee full activation, then do a 90 degree polar filter check by putting those 2 lenses together. This is going to be great for your front team and patients.
I assume Transitions simply doesn’t want to waste breath to explain. They just say the polar doesn’t work in the car. Right right, the photochromic activates very little in the car when it’s not sunny.

Thanks for the video, I'm looking into getting these and I have the option to further coat them in a blue light filter, but have been advised it would make them not as dark in sunlight. Do you have any experience in this? And do you think it might be a little redundant to add more blue light filter if this lenses already claims to filter it out? I would be primarily needing the blue light for monitors and screens etc indoors, but I would ideally like to use my glasses out for driving or for sunny days outdoors. Thanks for any help in advance.

From what I read online they should act like regular xtractive lenses when behind the windshield (so darkening to some 50% or so). Also polarization of these depends on the level of UV so they shouldn’t be basically polarized indoors and they should gradually get more and more polarized when under UV light.
There is Transitions Vantage too, which are also polarized transitions that have been around for a while, but Vantage don’t work in car. So that should be why the xtractive polarized were introduced, for car use.
