I just got EXTRAactive with my new prescription glasses. Mine turn darker, faster than the demonstration. They get very dark through car windshields are great outside, and there is NO tint inside. I personally don’t want to change glasses throughout the day. I wore them last year and my new ones are exactly the same perfect sunglasses for me. I highly recommend them.
Dr. D. you do great videos on Transitions. I've worn Xtra Active gray for about 6-7 years now, & I will never go back to just clear lenses. Light sensitivity & occasional migraines were my motivation, plus it's great not to have to change into sunglasses. Heat imo has more effect on the fast darkening than say sun on a cool day. I love the XtraActive - and my script is Very Strong (farsighted, astigmatism, & progressive trifocals).
Such an informative video! It really helps me make up my mind about which type of transition to get for my new glasses. BTW you should wear the 3rd pair more often you look great on it. Thank you!

So when entering a building, it is very dark until the transitions clear. Hence, I welcome Gen8 if they really do switch from dark to clear faster than previous generations.

My main concern is driving( days and nights), but I want a lense for every other activity, like bright indoor situations and for displays.
The only transition lens I ever had is the xtractive. They get super dark outdoors, which is amazing. They keep a light tint in the car, its not a lot but it helps. Also, they have slight tint indoors, which helps when youre someone like me who works in front of a computer all day.

Great Video! I have a pair of Essilor Varilux Lens with Transitions XTRActive and a Varilux Fire Red Mirror Coating. XTRActive Grey with Fire Red Mirror Coating Pros + All visible light wavelengths activate the XTRAactive vs. UV activates the Transitions Gen8 + Great for outdoor sports and driving, use them everyday for walking and running outside + Become much darker than Transitions Gen8, even more so when below 70 F outside + Better than Transitions Gen8 for outdoor activities and driving + Quick to darken and lighten, still work great after 1 year of daily use Cons - Prefer not to use indoors, too much light attenuation and too many internal reflections from indoor light sources - Try not to use these outside at night because of internal reflections from vehicle lights, street lights, etc. - Still usable after dusk, but prefer to wear Transitions Gen8 or non-Transitions lenses

Thank you, Doctor, for posting this video. However, with all due respect the Xtractive lenses performed far below expectations within the car. The change was barely noticeable once you put them on, and surprisingly only slightly darker once your sunroof was opened. It was only when you stepped outside that it really darkened, and that is not at all as this lens is advertised.
I’m glad you were able to get some good info from the video! The Xtractive does get a bit darker in the car, but it will depend on a lot of things. (Cloud cover, type of vehicle, where the windows are etc) Ultimately if you really want a dark lens for day driving I do kinda lean toward either the transitions drivewear or separate sunglasses personally. I did a video on driving in xtractive vs drivewear if you want to check it out! But I have a lot more glasses than the average human, admittedly!
I think the best option is keeping pair of polarized clip-ons (they're really inexpensive) in the car even if you're wearing photochromatic lenses you'll get extra protection from glare and still you don't have to bring your sunglasses around. I'm not getting the xtractive until they're making a polarized version.
I just got xtraactive transions for two days now and I love them! I don't really notice the difference in wearing them, to me they change fairly fast outside in car and outside in full sun, And inside when they change or turn back to clear so I'm not really notcing the difference!
I also did not notice much difference between Gen7 and my Xtraactive lens. Transitions also makes a Driving lens but probably not worth trying those either..
Thanks for the video.. the Gen 8 and XTRActive were very similar in the video.. i could see a slight bit more tint with the XTRA but it looked good on you. I would love to see you do a video with them in a building without sunlight so that i can see the default tint on the EXTRActive. Thanks again. I'll click your links in case you've already done it. As others have mention you are very pretty BTW. But not in a perv kinda way.. just a compliment.
Why? Can you explain please? I live in Saudi and it's extremely sunny and hot. I work mostly at night outdoor. I'm not sure if I need full on or Xtra active transition. Thanks
Honestly this is a great question and one I hadn't thought of. I don't have any tunnels near me so I've never even considered it. I did some research and it seems the prevailing opinion is that in the event you wear Rx sunglasses the recommendation is to keep them on in tunnels assuming your vision would be worse with them off and the danger of taking eyes off the wheel in order to switch from sun to clear would be riskier than just leaving them on. For transitions lenses, they will not be 100% darkened while you're in the car anyway so one might assume they're a little safer than a dedicated sun lens. If I passed through a long tunnel that was just after a very sunny stretch every single day I would definitely be cautious of my eyewear. Make sure to follow the advice of your doc on this one. :)
My cousin has glasses which have like a mini-frame with tinted prescription-free lenses that snaps on top of clear prescription via magnets so he can quickly switch between clear and tinted. I suggest you find those. P.S. They don't look silly, it's almost indistinguishable from normal lenses.
My good friend does a lot of driving for his job and he uses Transitions Drivewear and swears by them. I have Xtractive, but I don't do a lot of driving. I have noticed that if I am driving and I go under bridges or if there's a highway overhead and some parts of the road are sunny and some are dark, I find that they take too long to adjust. If the sun is low on the horizon and casting shadows, it's also difficult for me. The tunnels that I have been through (not many) while wearing them have been ok because they've been well illuminated. I think if I drove a lot, I'd go with something polarized rather than just something that blocked out the sun.
Thank you for all the great videos! I love all the frames especially the gen 8 ones! I just found your channel about a week ago, and I’ve watched almost all of your videos! I’m a michigander as well!! (go blue!) 😁🤓
Very pretty eyes without glasses. Loved the first two pairs, they look the best on you. Third one is too much of square in my opinion. Would you mind giving the models of these first two pairs?
Great info but was wondering how they perform while driving into direct sunlight and not with indirect sunlight which is what I see in this video . I got my first pair of transitions in 2003 and have some newer ones on the way . The ones I received in 2003 I had no problems with except for driving with into direct sunlight in the winter due to having my windows rolled up most of the time during the winter .
I took a screen shot and compare like you say no much a difference so glad i purchase gen8 cause deffinaly was going to regret that slightly tint indoors
I just got transition 8 brown on oakly lens, but when indoors it does not turn to clear, there is still a tint. Is this normal. My other transitions old ones turn clear indoors.
Hi Dr. D! Can drivewear glasses be done in this prescription (-10,5 cy 3, -11 cy 3,5)? I'm trying to figure out is that imposible in my country or everywhere.
Just a question: In the example you used for the Xtractive it seems that you have a purple/blueish coating on it. If that is the case, how will that blueish coating influence the colour change?
the purple/blueish coating you are seeing is the non-glare lens treatment, it would appear to be either Prevencia or Sapphire. This will not influence the color change at all.
They don't get dark at all in the car. I use a separate pair for regular and for sunglass use. I think I'll stick to what I've been doing. Thanks for the info.
Thanks for these videos. I understand why you are comparing the various options of "Transitions" photochromic lenses. These are cool to know if you want to create a custom look for your glasses and personal style. They are a good excuse to own multiple pairs of glasses. The company itself NEEDS to do a much better job explaining and communicating what are their different options. I find that salespeople often do not offer them to consumers as they are confused and have no clue. Many just know of the standard transitions.
Some feedback for your videos...it would be great whenever you feature the different product types to put up the actual title name of the product as you demo each one. It's a suggestion so people who are not in your industry to better understand what you are offering or for viewers to keep track of exactly what product you are speaking about. Note your videos are already good. This is a suggestion to improve.
How would I get Transitions lenses fitted in a frame I have, would your store do this service for non RX? I am also interested in the new Xtractive with variable polarization.
Any optical should be able to make you transitions lenses nonRx. There are some photochromic sunglasses available as well in non rx but they don’t come clear to grey, more are available as lighter brownish green to darker copper. Transitions xtractive polarized unboxing goes live on Saturday!
There are actually MANY color options. The generation 8 lens comes in the standard graphite green/grey/brown and then the "Style Colors" come in sapphire/amethyst/amber/emerald. I made a video about all the colors, actually. ua-cam.com/video/bf131i4qRS4/v-deo.html
@@EyeSchoolwithDrD Thank you I went to the optical shop yesterday for the prescription. But anportunately they had only two colors for the transition lenses the Grey and Brown i wanted the graphite Green but they dont have it 😔
can any Transition lens darken as dark as a tinted pair of rx sunglasses can get...80-85% darkness i think it is? ideally i'd like to not have to switch back and forth between two pairs of glasses but i love my dark sunglasses and i'm just not sure transitions came come close to that...
I don’t think so. They may claim it in perfect conditions but for a long day in the bright sun of the southern US I’ll personally take my dedicated sunglasses over my transitions.
@@EyeSchoolwithDrD unfortunately i lost my rx sunglasses in the river while boating and need to get new ones....which means two pairs..one clear one tinted....and i'm officially boycotting america's best contacts and eyeglasses due to poor service..i'm considering buying online but but my rx from america's best conveniently is missing the pd...to my understanding they "forget" to put the pd on the rx intentionally which doesnt surprise me.....i dont cheat people in my job and thus dont expect to be cheated either...
i will add....my current rx is 8+yo...and i got a new exam 2 years ago from america's worst contacts and eyeglasses and was so let down on the quality of the product and the accompanying service I havent gone back to anywhere yet so my newest rx is 2 years old already.
@@getprobed838 I own an independent practice so I’m incredibly biased here. A small hometown practice would be thrilled to have your business and I’d hope would give you better service. As for the PD, it’s not considered a part of the prescription by the FTC so it’s not standard practice to include it. It’s done by the optician filling the prescription as part of the optical process, not the exam process. I can’t remember the last time I personally measured a PD. So I wouldn’t even have it to include. So not to defend America’s best, but I get why it wasn’t included. At any rate, check out a local place and see if their service is any better. As a doc with a locally owned place I can tell you we appreciate every single person who chooses to do business with us instead of online! And a good optician will chat with you about how you use your glasses and what activities you enjoy and will be able to better guide you toward 1 pair transitions versus one clear/one sunglass pair. Good luck, I hope you have a better experience this time around!
The XtraActive looks to have a blue tint? And I once had these type glasses for blue light reflectant and in photos I looked like I had on blue eye shadow :(
Once Gen 8 was released in July 2018, my understanding is that they became the standard and Signature 7 was phased out pretty quickly. So if you ask for "Regular Transitions" they'll likely order you Gen8. But also, how in the world do they not know??

@@EyeSchoolwithDrD That's exactly why I dislike my area lol I'm getting a strong vibe that they're there only for a paycheck and not because they have genuine drive. Heck, a place like Zenni was even able to clarify that they only carry Gen7 for now and may be 'transitioning' to gen8s soon. Rant aside; I'm light sensitive and it's bad enough my eyes don't focus as quick as I think they should so that's why I'm looking for gen8s so persistently, since they do get darker and transition faster.
Hello Doctor Today I'm going to purchase my eye glass Before I always use only normal clear vision glasses, now I have an idea about to use transition glass Which will suits for me? I'm a marketing person Mostly I was in driving for 20 min and then went inside shop for 30 min Then again driving another 20min and went inside another shop for 30 min like that repeatedly If I use transition glass will it affect my eye? Or Will if affect my vision makes darker when I enter the shop? Please give me some clear suggestion
Thank you very much for this very informative video. However, I'd like to point out a minor mistake in your statement on UV protection level from your car's side window. I am from sunny Australia which is the capital of skin cancer in the world. Naturally I am interested in understanding UV protection in some common circumstances. You are right on the windshield screen, being laminated glass, is up to 99% UV protection, i.e. filtering out 99% or UVA and UVB. Driver and passenger side window typically is single layer from factory are less UV protective, but still filer out around 50% - 85% depending on the model and maker. You can ask your car manufacture for this information in related to the car model you have. They have official specification although it is not available to general public unless requested. I went even one step further bought a cheap UV meter and indeed confirmed what my car maker's specification. Btw, almost every one here down under can tint side window with UV protection film so long it meet legal requirement, such as minimum light transit rate.
Thank you for that addition to the info. I have definitely not done that much research on the true UV protection of the side windows. Much appreciated and will look into it!
I'm not familiar with Randolph/don't carry them in my office but you should be able to unless they specifically limit what lenses are allowed with their frames!
Great video, thank you. Obviously it wasn’t filmed in real time - do you think the changing position of the sun might’ve influenced the outcome? Also, you seem to suit just about any frame, I’m jealous. 😀
I rarely subscribe but im definitely subscribing to your channel Dr. The best video on this matter. Quick question please. I'm getting Flake 2.0 Oakley with prescription. I need to decide what's going to work best for me. I'm a tennis coach working in a place with a very hot summer. However, I coach a lot at night and it's outdoor, but I also coach during the day sometimes. Now I wear normal prescription glasses, but I really want to wear sport glasses when I'm on court. What you think could work best for me? I really wish to have lenses that go very dark during the day, and would love that they stay quite dark at night too, not as much as during the day but still clearly see the tint. Also, would be great to have them stay dark while driving. (Not sure if you get the same results inside the car and in the office or in court iutdoor at night. I'm thinking to get one pair with transition and one pair with full color but it's going to be very expensive. Again, my goal is to wear (almost) full dark during the day and sufficiently dark during the night. Thank you in advance for your advice.
What would you recommend for someone who doesn't wear rx glasses? I want to find a good pair to use in the day but also at night to help with headlight glare.
Even without a prescription or with a very small one you can wear glasses with transitions and anti-glare. Actually, the sig 7 AND xtra active glasses I'm wearing in this video are my "over-contact lenses" glasses. My contacts don't correct the little bit of astigmatism I have, so these glasses have very minimal prescription in them so I can have the UV protection during the day (transitions) and the glare reduction at night (anti-glare).
That's so awesome! I'm careful not to oversell on my videos so I'm glad yours are working so well!!
oh no i just bought them because i want them to be slightly tinted inside because i struggle with indoor lighting. have i made a mistake?!

XTRActive Grey with Fire Red Mirror Coating
Pros
+ All visible light wavelengths activate the XTRAactive vs. UV activates the Transitions Gen8
+ Great for outdoor sports and driving, use them everyday for walking and running outside
+ Become much darker than Transitions Gen8, even more so when below 70 F outside
+ Better than Transitions Gen8 for outdoor activities and driving
+ Quick to darken and lighten, still work great after 1 year of daily use
Cons
- Prefer not to use indoors, too much light attenuation and too many internal reflections from indoor light sources
- Try not to use these outside at night because of internal reflections from vehicle lights, street lights, etc.
- Still usable after dusk, but prefer to wear Transitions Gen8 or non-Transitions lenses

Thank you so much for the video. It helped me decide that here in Southern Nevada transitions would be woefully inadequate! Full-on sunglasses for me.
Why? Can you explain please?
I live in Saudi and it's extremely sunny and hot. I work mostly at night outdoor. I'm not sure if I need full on or Xtra active transition. Thanks
Whats better blue light hev protection? Transition or lutina?
Gen 8 with full sun @ 7:23
ExtraActive with full sun @ 10:30
So what happens when I drive into a dark tunnel. Will it transition fast enough that I don’t crash because it takes 4 minutes to transition to clear.
Awesome comparison. Great video!
Better than nothing, but wow the XTRActive really was not dark in the car.
Thanks for the info
How confusing is the slight shade indoors? @Eye School with Dr.D
Awesome in depth review! Thanks so much.
Does the default gen 8 block blue light or is that an extra that one would have to ask for ?
Hello i have a question. Are the 2nd pair of glasses with the trans 8 crizal sapphire or prevencia? I really like them alot
Thank you for all the great videos! I love all the frames especially the gen 8 ones! I just found your channel about a week ago, and I’ve watched almost all of your videos! I’m a michigander as well!! (go blue!) 😁🤓
Thank you!!! And, GO BLUE!!!!!
What about if you are inside a house that is bright during the day and lots of big windows with sun shining in? Will the lens go dark indoors?
Is it just me or the XtraActive tint is not much darker compared to Gen8. Also, thanks for making this video😊
Gen 8 really should be getting clear indoors. I'd have my Optician take a look and make sure its within normal for the lenses.
I cant choose between Transitions Gen 8 and PhotoFusion X... I think Photofusion X is not that old, so a little bit better?
How big are those glasses are they 54-55???
I know this was made in 2019 But the glasses you show in the Light tortoiseshell color. Do you know the design Number? Can't find these
Please
I want to know there new transmission for problem float
how many % tint in door? Thank you.
Which of them are better for person with blepharospasm and light sensitivity(especially indoor) ??
I’d say xtractive grey. Polarized is out now as well so I’d consider that!
@@EyeSchoolwithDrD Thank You for Your response :)
Happy Easter !
How is using them in thé night? Still effective with the dark / lights of other cars?
Hi Dr.
Yup, it's prevencia. :)
They don't get dark at all in the car. I use a separate pair for regular and for sunglass use. I think I'll stick to what I've been doing. Thanks for the info.
Is the grey version of xtraactive darker than the Graphite green ones when fully dark?
hi , appreciate if u can make a Sensity Dark vs Xtractive same color video. thanks.
Thx for the video, awaiting my Extra Active in RayBans, cant wait.
The transition lens only available for the Grey color? What about green or other colors?
There are actually MANY color options. The generation 8 lens comes in the standard graphite green/grey/brown and then the "Style Colors" come in sapphire/amethyst/amber/emerald. I made a video about all the colors, actually. ua-cam.com/video/bf131i4qRS4/v-deo.html
@@EyeSchoolwithDrD Thank you
I went to the optical shop yesterday for the prescription. But anportunately they had only two colors for the transition lenses the Grey and Brown i wanted the graphite Green
but they dont have it 😔
can any Transition lens darken as dark as a tinted pair of rx sunglasses can get...80-85% darkness i think it is? ideally i'd like to not have to switch back and forth between two pairs of glasses but i love my dark sunglasses and i'm just not sure transitions came come close to that...
And I once had these type glasses for blue light reflectant and in photos I looked like I had on blue eye shadow :(
That's my anti-glare, Prevencia...they normally don't have a blue tint like that :)
What vendors sell Gen8? It seems all of my local eye shops ither have no idea what gen they sell or don't sell the latest at all :(
Once Gen 8 was released in July 2018, my understanding is that they became the standard and Signature 7 was phased out pretty quickly.
Thank you! I was looking for this! 🤗
Hello Doctor
Today I'm going to purchase my eye glass
Before I always use only normal clear vision glasses, now I have an idea about to use transition glass
Which will suits for me?
I'm a marketing person
Mostly I was in driving for 20 min and then went inside shop for 30 min
Then again driving another 20min and went inside another shop for 30 min like that repeatedly
If I use transition glass will it affect my eye?
Or
Will if affect my vision makes darker when I enter the shop?
Please give me some clear suggestion
Let me know what you decided! Your local Optometrist/Optician came up with something great I'm sure!
I just got the extra active and I love them!!!
Can you please tell me why you like the extra active I'm still trying to decide do they have a slight tint indoors
great, informative video! shall be checking out your others now! thank you.
Awesome, thank you!
How thick are they please?
Informative. Thanks for sharing. At least now I know which kind I want when I select my new frames.
Glad it was helpful!
Has extra ctive been upgraded like the signature lens? Like do they switch faster than they use to?
Hi Melanie, all your glasses frames are beautiful. Please tell us which brand they are and what model.
Can you get these Gen 8 with Randolph frames and Prescription lenses?
I'm not familiar with Randolph/don't carry them in my office but you should be able to unless they specifically limit what lenses are allowed with their frames!
Great video, thank you. Obviously it wasn’t filmed in real time - do you think the changing position of the sun might’ve influenced the outcome? Also, you seem to suit just about any frame, I’m jealous. 😀
PLEASE tell me what brand of sunglasses those are!!
Salt!
@@EyeSchoolwithDrD tha k you!!
Do Transition Gen8 lens have the Crizal Sapphire 360 UV coating already?
No, you would have to specify that you want that coating when purchasing your lenses.
Yes i got the xtra active they are very nice lenses
Mine doesn't get dark (even a small tint) in car. You need to open sunroof
I've been wearing Extra active lenses for about 2 years now and will not wear anything else...love how dark they get in the extreme sun.
Glad to hear it!
how are they indoors? are they slightly tinted in a regular office space? I'm looking for the best transition lens for every day use!
What would you recommend for someone who doesn't wear rx glasses? I want to find a good pair to use in the day but also at night to help with headlight glare.
Transition Xtra active
@@MrYusha would that protect enough white driving in the Texas sun?
Even without a prescription or with a very small one you can wear glasses with transitions and anti-glare. Actually, the sig 7 AND xtra active glasses I'm wearing in this video are my "over-contact lenses" glasses. My contacts don't correct the little bit of astigmatism I have, so these glasses have very minimal prescription in them so I can have the UV protection during the day (transitions) and the glare reduction at night (anti-glare).
Thank you for the awesome information
