Jodi and Nick react to Dave Allen telling about his first day of school at a religious school. His suggestions of doctrine and how confusing it would be on a young kid who knows nothing about God is priceless.

The Catholic Church in Ireland was very dominant and very oppressive; they did some dreadful things especially concerning un-wed mothers.

They sexually abused and murdered countless children, as well as treating unmarried mothers abominably. In UK in 1961 my teenage birth mother was forced to give me up for adoption, disowned by her family and treated appallingly at the hostel she went to run by "religious" people, including during labour. She has never got over it- so abused, so traumatised. My adoption was not good. We met by incredible chance on facebook 2 years ago, it has been rocky, we're both trying our best in kindness.

I had a Irish friend, who stuttered quite badly. One day I asked him if he had stuttered all his life. He replied, It started when I was in a catholic orphanage, after continual beatings from the nuns,. for any little wrong doing. From that day on, I questioned religion, never really believing in going to church. Then I made the mistake of visiting a jewish customer on a saturday, realising my mistake made my apologises and started to leave. To my surprise he waved my apologises aside and said "come in, I find the synagoge full of hypocrites, my church is my home and you are very welcome" So today, I believe my god represents what I can do for others, not being part of a 'church club' to prove my religous beliefs.

@@johnchristmas7522 My elderly neighbour, a kind lovely woman was an avid church goer and christian all her life, when she started getting sick not one person from the church went round to see how she was or if she needed anything. For the 5 months from the first illness to her eventual death not one ever bothered and it destroyed her belief in the church, not God, but the church. It was me, an agnostic who looked after her in her final 5 months. Goodness comes from actions, not as you say belonging to some club.

There were lots of good clergy too. I was my mother's eighth child, born in Dun Laoghaire in 1958.. I was born at home. Nuns came into the house and assisted with the birth and took care of my siblings. Not a penny was asked for or expected.

Dave Allen was a master storyteller, as well as a hilarious and intelligent comedian. I remember watching his TV shows when I was a kid, there were a bunch of sketches, often with religious themes for which he was always in trouble for, and monologues in front of the audience. Some of the sketches stick in my mind to this day, but mostly I remember him perched on the stool with a whiskey in one hand and a cigarette in the other, regaling the audience with some everyday event but described from his weird off-kilter viewpoint. An absolute legend.

I am 83 years old and I have NEVER understood the supposed logic of religion or the whole god thing. Imagine what a kid makes of it all. Which is why religion is in fact a matter of indoctrination, with kids getting fed the most unlikely stories by their parents and believing them because their parents wouldn't lie to them, right?

    • @andrewtongue7084
      @andrewtongue7084 3 місяці тому

He needs to do nothing of the sort, Jamie; by it's very nature, Religious orthodoxy (of any factional group) is counter-intuitive - there is no absolute - two thousand plus years of your so called, "Soul searching" has produced no evidentiary conclusion. Couple that with religion being the prime mover in so many wars & conflict within differing theistic orders, is it any wonder that Leon is a Secularist ?
Epicurus had it right when he espoused these sentiments:
"Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able ?
      Then he is not omnipotent.
Is he able, but not willing ? Then he is malevolent.
Is he both able & willing ? Then whence cometh evil ?
Is he neither able nor willing ? Then why call him God.
Religion is a man-made construct, designed to exert control, & neither Leon or myself require 'guidance' from a deity who promulgates such destruction & misery in its name; nor do we need to seek approbation to live a decent, peaceful, honest, hard-working ethic to exist amongst humankind...you wish to live (your) rhetoric - no-one's stopping you, but to issue a one-liner to a man who has more rational thought process than you're ever likely to possess, then that's an insult to his intelligence.....

I love how Dave really shows the ridiculousness of the religious doctrine and the things you are made to believe.
And yet so many accept it as "yep, that could happen" without any evidence. So easy to convince a child of anything though, and then all you have to do is keep repeating it often enough that it sticks.
They don't do the say with other stories like Father Christmas and the Tooth Fairy though. They let you stop believing in those.
    Great stuff from Dave Allen.

I dont recall this but I bet I saw it when it first aired as my Dad was a huge fan. I used to love watching Dave allen as a kid and can totally relate to this childhood confusion. Circa 1970, Im 7 years old and we have just moved to a new house next to a family of christians who had kids a similar age. Not too long after moving to this new house I find myself attending sunday school with next doors kids. My parents were not religious in the slightest and my dad was a very logical thinker but I think they just wanted to clear the house of kids for a few hours so they could get it on in peace. Anyway , I distinctly recall sitting there listening to the bible stories and thinking to myself (my 7 year old equivalent of) 'This is a load of bollocks', and refused to go again. Ive been an atheist and pretty much anti any religion ever since. Luckily for my parents game consoles hadnt been invented yet and I was quite a feral kid happy to spend the entire weekend exploring the local woods with friends.

Couple of things, my first wife was called Elizabeth and for many years her younger sister thought the last line of the Lords Prayer was "and Elizabeth from Evil" not "and deliver us from evil". I was brought up Catholic part of the Irish diaspora, and the nuns that taught me were gentle and kind. Sadly, for many, that wasn't their experience. Search for the Magdelen Launderies. These were institutions in Ireland run by nuns for unmarried mothers and their children. I am Italian and when I was small there were no state kindergartens, but the nuns in our village ran one in their convent. I spent a lot of time there, morning and afternoon, Monday to Saturday. First thing in the morning we had to put our hands on our little desks and they would check if our nails were clean, if they were not, they would wack our hands with a stick. Then when I started elementary school, twice a week we had to go to the convent for catechism classes, which were compulsory, and mass every Sunday. This went on until the end of middle school. In all those years, I had developed an obsession of wanting to become a nun, don't ask me why, but when I started high school at 14, I saw the light. I went to a scientific lyceum, which opened up my mind and my horizons, it nurtured critical thinking, it taught me not to believe blindly, but to question everything. The added bonus was that my parents never pushed religion on me, mind you, they never went to church, save for weddings and funerals, and we never discussed religion because, we had more important things to talk about. Although, in general, my experience was pretty positive, I can't say the same for other children. The nuns could be really vile.

Happy birthday! Completely understood what you said about not liking all the fuss of birthdays. My youngest son (now 26) has hated birthdays since he was little, he loved the presents but would go behind the curtains to open them because he didn't like people looking at him, he's just very introverted and shy, while my eldest is very bubbly and extrovert. Having two kids with different personalities is not a problem until it comes to big birthdays, because as parents you want to treat your kids equally, but we couldn't do that when it came to 18th and 21st birthdays, as my eldest wanted the big parties but my youngest absolutely refused, he was even worried that we'd throw him a surprise party and begged us not to... it made us feel bad because we felt like we'd treated him unfairly but it's what he wanted so he got extra pressies instead.

I went to a convent school..
Nuns are absolutely terrifying to kids.
The slap of the ruler against the desk top, knocking the ink well everywhere.
(making up sins because we had to have confession every other Wednesday..)..
I instantly turn into a 7 year old and quiver in my shoes…
We watched Dave Allen with dad
    And spent every minute laughing.
Then confessing to taking the lords name in vain..
    Those were the days lol..

1st day of School = 1st day of our Indoctrination life
Where we are taught to believe everything what we are told to believe and never question Authority.

I was educated by a nun when i was six. She was ultra violent. She beat me one day 'cos i said gods name is harold. I.e. our father who art in heaven harold be thy name. She picked me up from behind by the shoulders and drove her knee into my back then threw me to the floor. All the catholic clergy have repressed sexual tension. It was scary. Violent nuns and lecherous priests. Dave allen is spot on sadly.

My first school was the convert, I was five and a half, second day I got the cane across my hand for losing a ribbon, another girl got a slap around the legs because she couldn’t wait to go to the toilet, we were little kids and terrified of going to school, we would get the cane for the smallest mistake and if we went home and told our parents we would get the cane again. I only went for one year, I was lucky my grandmother stepped in and sent me to the state school.
