Watching Dave Allen was a must when I was young. One of the best. RIP. He grew up as an Irish Catholic. Always ended his shows by saying "May your God go with you".
I was a Glasgow Taxi driver and picked Dave Allan up from the theatre he was appearing in and took him to a house and asked if I could come back at 10:30 and take him to his hotel. I arrived on time and rang the doorbell a lady answered and I asked for Dave and she said Oh he’s not leaving yet then the voice called is that my taxi and then he came and left. He apologised that his host had tried to send me away. He was a true gentleman.
The “water” wasn’t water,it was Jamesons Irish Whiskey, when you were allowed to smoke and drink on tv. One of the very best storytellers ever. Huge in the UK and Ireland at the time.
At the height of his popularity he wasn't popular in Ireland because his British shows were banned there. He lived in England since he was 14 and loved mocking Irish Catholics in his gentle way.
Dave Allen is IRISH - which almost guarantees he was strictly raised as a Catholic. He comes from the days where you didn't have to swear every other word! The drink was whiskey.
And, as is so typical, his Irish jokes were unmatched - just as a Jew will tell easily the funniest Jewish jokes. But Dave was simply on another level from 99.9% of comics. The man was genius.
At this time the UK was full of Irish construction workers. They didnt swear every other word, they swore every word. These days we all go to Ireland begging for IT jobs, and nobody swears at all.
This man was awesome in his time, simply a hilarious story teller, other standouts from him are, teaching time to a kid, aeroplanes, on driving, origins of Christmas, funeral. He has so many great rambling observational stories it's impossible to list. Great reaction👌✌️
You're seeing a small clip of his show that has been re-encoded to upload to UA-cam, no doubt they messed with the saturation levels because it was full colour. Your own eye is carrying out most of these tricks on you, the background being lined/textured was pulling the colour out of your perception. The glass is probably whiskey or something similar, you don't sip water or ginger ale (which is mainly for kids or mixing drinks over here), you gulp it, you sip strong alcohol...
I saw Dave Allen when he was new. (Yes, im that old). He has always been sitting in a chair like that. Drinking. He once said "it shure as hell not tea in the glass.
Jodi was so distracted by the backdrop, it helped her dodge the religious slant. Dave Allen tells a great story and I am certain as teacher's you will love watching him teaching his son to tell the time. The frustration around children's responses and trying to explain to them will have you in stitches. I'm sure you both will have had moments like this.
Dave's humour was totally lost on these two. This particular clip was guaranteed to lose most in the US, as it contained jokes on religion, and clever wordplay combined with subtlety. A US audience wants the laughs telegraphed half-an-hour before a punchline.
Dave Allen was an alternative comedian before the they became popular, he was unique in many ways and I'm old enough to remember watching him back in the seventies when he was considered by many to be very controversial and received death threats from some in the catholic community in Ireland, generally in the UK he was very popular whether you were religious or not though. Much missed by many, myself included.
Lol. You claim to be so observant by talking about the glass of whiskey changing colour, but totally missed the fact that he has half of his index finger missing. And what's more, it's the same hand holding the glass. Absolutely priceless.
Dave Allen was famous for having a glass of whiskey beside him on every show. There was a joke where he played a sketch and his drink was refilled afterwards.
Jodi looked so uncomfortable watching that but so lovely that she stuck at it. You Nick were brilliant, the lead up to women, you got as soon as he mentioned Adam was happy. Fantastic reaction.
My family emigrated Ireland for Australia in 1958. We grew up watching Dave Allen - who, BTW got his start on Australian television. My very proud Irish Catholic father loved Dave. Dad was friends with lots of the clergy and they all loved Dave too, including the Bishop, according to Dad. I went to see Dave live in Melbourne circa 1986. I injured myself laughing so much. We met up after the concert, obviously drunk, and flirted with my wife.
He was brillaint in his days, as parents you must watch and react to his sketch on teaching the time, can not wait for Jodie`s Yeps as she watches it. Loving you guys so much I signed up to support the channel each month.
I just LOVE this couple, they laugh at what THEY perceive as funny, they are quite uninhibited, and Nick appears to be a REAL mans man with a fantastic laugh, while Jodi (who also has a great laugh) goes along with the flow. Keep these clips coming, PLEASE, as I am an old man, and I do not know I will be around to enjoy your clips.
As a young man I used to love watching Dave Allen on Sunday nights on PBS. He has such a unique style and wit. A couple of his most watched clips are about airplanes and teaching how to tell time.
Really enjoyed your reaction to our great irish comedian Dave Allen. He was well known for his religious jokes, of which there were many. He also had a great routine about airplanes and another about teaching your kid time. I highly recommend you look for those.
He was from outside Dublin Ireland but lived in England he was a favourite of mine growing up I’d be allowed to watch him from about Eight years old on the BBC tv, he does sketch comedy too within his sit down comedy show. He would drink whiskey and smoke …he had a missing end of his index finger I always wanted to know why but never found out.
Dave Allen was raised in Ireland as a Roman Catholic. Many of his stories refer to things he had to do or believe according to his religion. There are many, many, humerous situations that most people can relate to, from all walks of life. Note: he does not ridicule religion: just points out some of the bizare beliefs and sometimes mentions how he slowly transitioned to being an atheist. But he is a comedian first and foremost: not some angry atheist trying to make points. I explained that because of your own personal beliefs that tend to cloud your viewpoints. Cheers.
About the lack of colour, it is old footage, shot with old camera technology, plus it has been copied many times (losing a little more colour each time), plus I suspect this copy was once recorded on VHS tape too, which is very low definition! In other words, we are lucky to have it to watch at all! Despite all that, Dave Allen is always well worth a watch...
Dave Allen was a 70s comedian..and irish ,so he did a lot of religious jokes and sketches...Sadly today he probably would not be allowed to do his jokes ,as half the world would be offended..I remember watching his weekly show ...You should watch his sketch about teaching a child how to tell the time ,,Hysterical ,but what he says is actually true....I will add the with your other half saying about the black and white and the glass ,i must say i thought she had a hat on till i noticed it was the chair lol
My favourite Dave Allen stories are his spooky ghost stories and his drunk stories. You will be crying with laughter and rolling on the floor. I have some of his DVD compilations, but his TV series Dave Allen at Large doesn't seem to be available to buy, at least not in Australia.
I predict once you have seen more from Dave Allen you will love him. Very clever and observant man. Watch - traching your child time, airplanes religeous jokes etc etc there are many.
The drink was whisky, his trademark. The clip is from an old TV broadcast ~ the '80s/early '90s when the TV chroma space was much more limited (EMI 2001 cameras and 2-inch tape and so on). Dave was Irish and a very successful comedian and sadly passed away far too young.
Wonderful comedian, almost compulsary viewing when I was in my youth. On the other topic raised in the reaction, Nick didn't see it, I didn't see it, I doubt anyone else saw jodies black and white hand or yellow drink. Time to lay off those special cookies.
The glass contains whisky 🥃 hence the colour. He had his own BBC TV series in the late 1960s and early 1970s plus appeared in this format in his BBC TV series Dave Allen at Large always with a glass of whisky. He always got complaints because a lot of the sketches in his shows and jokes in his standup were about religion and the absurdity of it to his mind and especially the Roman Catholic church with him being Irish.
Loving your channel, loved to of had you two as my teachers, brave doing UA-cam as teachers , one thing is for sure you two work so well together, so in love , you probably get that all the time, but once more can't hurt!! 😂❤
OMG Dave Allen was an Irishman from the Republic of Ireland 🇮🇪 in the 70’s, a brilliant lapsed Catholic comedian who drank whiskey and used to smoke on stage until his doctor told him to stop after Dave had a heart attack. He eventually died in early ‘80’s from cirrhosis of the liver. He was most famous for live performances taunting the Catholic Church. Hilarious clever humour.
Dave Allen was an Irishman who spent his entire adult life (except for 11 months in Australia) in Britain where he was extraordinarily popular. I loved watching him on TV in England in the 70s and 80s. He could drag out a story for ages and it was always worth it.
Fun fact, many years ago when I was about 5yrs old Dave Allen lived up the road from us. He used to drink in the same pub as my Dad who always said he was a lovely guy. He moved away years ago.
Dave was one of my favourite comedians. I was raised in 'the 40s, in England. One of my favourite jokes of his was, when his parents sent him to a convent, to school.
Hi Guys, firstly, sorry Jodi, that was from his B.B.C. Tv show in colour, but remember the B.B.C. only started with colour around `69/70. I was watching him with my parents from the late `60`s throughout the `70s. His longest show was (Dave Allen At Large), it consisted of joke-telling sections interspersed with sketches. For the sketches he had a regular group of comedy actors with him, who I also saw in other British Tv/films over the years. On You Tube you can find a compilation of some of the sketches, it has been split into 4 parts, i.e. (The Best Of Dave Allen.....The Comedy Sketches 1/4, 2/4 etc.) I think they run at around 10 mins each. Great to see you reacting to Dave, he is greatly missed.
Not only was this from a time when Colour TV was relatively new, but you have to remember that this was probably copied across from an early Tape system, and 625 lines at 50hz was also fairly new. originally TV had 405 lines so looked grainy. All but the newest TV's could not show programmes at 625 lines. Not only that but I think US TV used a different system again. So Colour wasn't great when it first started, but then there are all the other differences to take into account in converting this to a compressed format to be shown on You Tube. Yes, this conversion could probably have been done better with all the new technology, it could have been enhanced, so it also depends on who put this video up on to YT
@@grabtharshammer Yes, I only know of this "405-625 Lines", as I was telling another reactor about the costume drama (The Forsyte Saga). Which was the last British drama series broadcast in B/W, that decided not to wait & be in colour. Partly, as they already had got together a great cast & were worried about losing someone, if they delayed. But, also because at that time in 1967, not enough of the new sets were in use.

Other comedians would mimic his main mannerism - using his fingerless hand to brush off his non-existent dandruff from his shoulders. You’ll also notice how animated he can be whilst telling his jokes, but never does he manage to knock away his whiskey glass. He would often also smoke cigarettes…two vices that weren’t considered off limits to state-sponsored tv in the late 70s - early 80s !
Dave Allen was a genuinely special comedian that I watched as a kid, although I realised a few days ago that his first series in the UK aired when I was two. It was the relaxed way in which he'd tell his stories. He was a great storyteller. If he was wrong and there is a God, once he got over the shock, he'd get them laughing in no time.
jodi im not going to give you a hard time with this he was drinking whisky that is what was in that glass not cup jodi and colour was off cause of the age of it colour was really dull in the 80s the g string nose got me
Very observant about his attire - He didn't talk about it but he does have a partly missing finger on one hand - I can't remember which hand it was and He did enjoy a drink and a smoke in his early years but gave up both vices eventually
Have to say I know I've watched this reaction it makes me chuckle I love you wife's reaction to this it's priceless. And it clears me up. Should neverbe afraid to express your instinctive emotions it's what makes us human
I WAS NOT SURE IF YOU LIKED HIM OR NOT IF YOU DID HERE ARE A COUPLE MORE Dave Allen - "Teaching Your Kid Time" ua-cam.com/video/0QVPUIRGthI/v-deo.html Dave Allen on Religion ua-cam.com/video/jxo81Ok9Urk/v-deo.html
Connect the dots. An Irish man would not be sitting drinking coloured water....try whiskey. Also, as you were paying close attention to his hands, did you notice he had half a finger missing? Apparently it was bitten when he flipped off the devil! 😮 😉
he had some great tv shows back in the 60s and 70s, there were some great British comedy shows during those times on the tv in New Zealand. . .all naturally funny
The worst thing is that when he died the catholic church refused to bury him and a protestant vicar had to do it, they did the same thing to father Ted who is a priest in a very funny comedy series that you should look at
Hello people, just an observation,if you look at Ricky Gervais shows now. Different time but very similar, not saying it's the same, but not entirely different .Love your reactions, love from Dublin lreland .,☘️👍
Re' you mentioning that Dave Allen lost the top of his one forefinger, if you can find it, he once did a great comedic story about how he lost. It's well worth a watch, very funny. Ade.
Every single thing he did was brilliant. I am over 50 years old now and I grew up in what then was Yugoslavia. I remember watching him as a kid on TV on sundays. Loved it than, love it now. During the last 30 years I have been living in Sweden and I don't remember ever seeing him on TV here. Thankfully there is this thing called UA-cam. 😁
It was in colour. He was drinking whiskey...sometimes he would be smoking while telling the story...that was all allowed back then.

He was the best comedian of his day in my opinion. The nuns at my school loved his programme.
I love how Dave Allen would sign off. He would say. “Goodnight, thank you, and may your God go with you.”
4.05 when Jodi glances over at Nick to see what his reaction is to the 'He's happy' comment....then he looks back at her cautiously! 😂😂

He pointed out the nonsense of religion....
So loving christians threatened to kill him...
Some things never change
Dave Allen was a genuinely special comedian that I watched as a kid, although I realised a few days ago that his first series in the UK aired when I was two. It was the relaxed way in which he'd tell his stories. He was a great storyteller. If he was wrong and there is a God, once he got over the shock, he'd get them laughing in no time.
It`s recorded 45 years ago, it`s probably a bad VHS copy, and it was recorded in color.
Yeah we had him in Australia , he was pretty popular.
I spotted it - its his left forefinger!
jodi im not going to give you a hard time with this he was drinking whisky that is what was in that glass not cup jodi
and colour was off cause of the age of it colour was really dull in the 80s
the g string nose got me
Very observant about his attire - He didn't talk about it but he does have a partly missing finger on one hand - I can't remember which hand it was and He did enjoy a drink and a smoke in his early years but gave up both vices eventually
It’s from 1995/1996
It’s not water it’s whiskey
Simply put Dave Allen was a master at telling a story 🤗
Nose knickers became quite popular where I live about three years ago. Dropped out of fashion now though.
Have to say I know I've watched this reaction it makes me chuckle I love you wife's reaction to this it's priceless. And it clears me up. Should neverbe afraid to express your instinctive emotions it's what makes us human

Connect the dots. An Irish man would not be sitting drinking coloured water....try whiskey. Also, as you were paying close attention to his hands, did you notice he had half a finger missing? Apparently it was bitten when he flipped off the devil! 😮 😉
Or flipped off Allah? God? Disney?
The true gentlemen of comedy, Mr Dave Allen RIP ❤
he had some great tv shows back in the 60s and 70s, there were some great British comedy shows during those times on the tv in New Zealand. . .all naturally funny
Ade.
Watch him teaching his son to tell the time and him talking about flying he is brilliant
