I hadn't thought about Dave Allen in years he was actually my Father's favourite comedian, Dave was a brilliant meandering story teller and very funny with his own Saturday evening BBC show..

I will admit to having a small amount of joy when seeing Americans' faces when they hear the C word used frequently in the UK.

The Salmen Rushdie mention at the end was about the Beeb reprimanding him on his language
The final joke about Salman Rushdie - he was an author who wrote a book that offended some Muslims, earning a death threat and forcing him into hiding - Dave Allens act was controversial at the time, both his subject matter often and especially his swearing. This particular routine had a lot of swearing for television of that time, hence him joking he was going to have to join Rushdie in hiding. And indeed it got a lot of flak after broadcast, so his next show he opened by doubling down on it!
Wasn't this the week after he dropped the F bomb so decided to get as much swearing that was acceptable in as possible

We in the the UK quite often say “no shit” If some states something obvious we reply sarcastically “no shit Sherlock”
My experience of Americans directly is quite small, but the few I have known and worked with leads me to believe they can't put two word together without swearing. It was constantly like being in the film Goodfellows.
As a small child in Ireland my DA decided I needed to listen to Dave now I know why he was the first to challenge the church
In the UK and Ireland pissed means several different things based on the context: "pissed" = drunk. "pissed-off" means very angry, "piss-off" means to tell someone to go-away, "taking the piss" means someone is taking advantage of you, or being very sarcastic, "piss-head" is referring to a drunk person, "piss-taker" is referring to someone who takes advantage of a situation or person for nefarious gain. There are probably a few more versions of the word but please bear in mind that it has many connotations over here all depending on the situation in hand

Pixxed as a fart is huge in the UK to explain someone who is really drunk everybody uses this term.
This routine is from 1988 and came a week after he'd concluded one of his sketches on TV with the word 'fuck' which caused a hug number of complain letters and even questions in the Hous of Commons. So he used as many 'frowned upon' words as he could in that routine. That's what he ment with moving in with Salman Rushdi, who had just had a price put on his head by the Iranian government over a book he wrote 'The Satanic Verses.'
Here in Finland, a teacher of a student's mother tongue, listened kids in the school yard and told them: "you use Fword like comma, all in right points of the sentence..." Especially teens were not so pleased about that comment.

Unfortunately when I was studying I was working a job in the railway here in Queensland so I picked up a few in my late teens. My favourite (girlfriend from Yorkshire HATES it) is "Not here to fuck spiders". Basically it means here to get the job done and a great way of responding to someone asking if you're ready to start something (girlfriend unpacking Ikea for example). I have no idea where it came from but it feels so useful. It can be toned down to "Not here to fornicate with arachnids" to varying levels of success. Not even joking, it's a true phrase!

dave allen was roasted for swearing in his act, he did this video as a way of getting back at his critics by swearing most of the way through it, hence the reference to moving in with salmon rushtie

majority of uk comedy revolves around the English language how its spoken how its used its different meanings, the best comedians really use it well..... if you want to experience this the watch The Two Ronnies.... their sketches show this manipulation of language to the most funny ways it can be used.....Four Candles... Mastermind....Sweet shop..are a couple of examples
The American phrase that really annoys me is “go ahead and…”. Eg. “Now go ahead and add the sugar”. No no no. It’s “now add the sugar“. Every America seems to say it.
Another Uk comedienne i recommend you review is Catherine Tate. She did sketches in a show and they are hilarious. Including Offensive Translator, Gay son and drunk bride. Also her nan sketches. You will not regret.

It has always amazed me that normally intelligent people still get hung up about swearing, do they just not see the pattern that each generation normalises the swear words of previous generations and then comes up with their own forbidden works? It is like some multi generational game and yet they don't realise they are playing it

Vague is not being clearly expressed, so vagaries are things that are not clearly expressed...
In general when it's not about speech it can be unclear or ill-defined, like it's own definition...
Surely you've used the expression "that's a bit vague", as in you haven't said enough to actually say what you're trying to say... Or you're describing something that is not yet clearly defined...
I think in this case it's more like the 'curiosities' of the english language. The strange things that lie on the periphary of the language
