Why You Clean Up The Stumps

  • It took me a while to get the stump grindings cleaned up. You don't want to leave the wood chips in the hole. They rob the soil of nitrogen and you won't be able to grow new grass in those areas. It has been very hot this week and my motivation to complete it was nil. I finally got it done and now I just need to get some dirt to backfill in those areas. I will then use Turf Mend Blue to repair the patches.

    Looks good my friend. I’m having a huge honeylocust removed soon, so I’ll be doing the same thing. The pitchfork is key in removing mulch. So much easier than a shovel.

      Good luck! Yeah, the pitchfork is key. Wish I had a long handled one, but I made due.

    I have always been told that the stump grinding shavings are so acidic ,so it's not good to use them right away where you would normally use mulch

    • @YardGuy
      @YardGuy  3 роки тому +1

      well I know that the shavings can steal the nitrogen from the soil. I have been putting them around my property each year.

    What do I have to buy from home depot to fill the hole? Can you give me a link to go to? Also can you plant like those plants people put in the area where you put the stump grind when the grind is there?

    • @YardGuy
      @YardGuy  3 роки тому

      Those plants might work ok like that. Just topsoil is needed. www.homedepot.com/p/40-lb-Top-soil-71140180/100355705?source=shoppingads&locale=en-US&mtc=Shopping-B-F_D28O-G-D28O-28_3_SOILS_AND_AMENDMENTS-MULTI-NA-Feed-LIA-NA-NA-BASE_SHP&cm_mmc=Shopping-B-F_D28O-G-D28O-28_3_SOILS_AND_AMENDMENTS-MULTI-NA-Feed-LIA-NA-NA-BASE_SHP-71700000033675478-58700003911554572-92700038980202538&gclid=CjwKCAiAxeX_BRASEiwAc1QdkRw6r7ay6jalO76C_-Ols1GQ023hPOwE60M_ywFttbK-QZJuN1t_GBoCs14QAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds

    Could you just light a fire on top of the shaving, and burn them all out?
    I just had three pine stumps ground away today, and a good amount of the shavings were hauled away.
    But I’ve still go some remnants, and also a few raised mounds where the roots go under ground.

    • @YardGuy
      @YardGuy  2 роки тому

      Too much moisture is the issue. Otherwise that would work.

  • @MinneAppleJax612

    We just had an ash tree stump grinded & the guy said to leave the debris in the hole for 2 weeks, then add top soil/seed over it. He said otherwise the hole will fill up with moisture & will keep caving in for the next 20 years. Something about the wood chips heating up in the ground, creating a barrier from moisture. Is this true? Not sure what to think after watching this video. Any advice would be appreciated!

    • @YardGuy
      @YardGuy  11 місяців тому +1

      No, the wood chips will slowly decompose robing the grass of nitrogen. So you will have a hole that gets deeper and uglier over time if you keep the debris in there. #science

    • @YardGuy

      Doesn't really matter, sometimes people like the wider bigger rakes on the end.

  • @mpxz999

    If you remove the stump grinding from that spot, because they leech nitrogen and stop growth… then why are you moving it into your garden? Won’t it stop growth around there too?

    • @YardGuy
      @YardGuy  3 роки тому

      There are extra fertilizers in the garden areas.

    • @styleZ8722
      @styleZ8722 2 роки тому +1

      Using Grindings as a mulch is not the same and burying it. When you bury the grindings it becomes a soil amendment which is part of the decomposition process. The wood itself does not contain enough nitrogen for the chemical process to occur on its own, so it pulls the nitrogen from the surrounding soil.
