    Outstanding tutorial. Great content and excellent delivery. One of the best tutorials I have seen on the internet dealing with lawn leveling and preparation for seeding. The emphasis on the right soil mix to insure good conditions for strong turf is right on. Spend the time to do it right from the start and much of your future lawn maintenance will be much easier. Thank you very much. Subscribed.

    The challenge I see is 1. finding really good topsoil without too many chunks of wood in it. 2. doing this when there isn't going to be a torrential rain downpour that ruins all the fine work you've done. Thanks for sharing a great 2 videos on this.

    Thats a smart way to level a new lawn!
    I have added 5mm pure compost to my existing one and drag a selfmade lawnlevel over it. Over the years this process wil make the Soil better and level the lawn at the same time.

    Haven't read the many comments but have a recommendation to lower the compacted compost a couple of inches below the top of sidewalks and driveways. You want the mowed surface of the new lawn to be level with the concrete. Also this avoids ponding issues when the turf is above the concrete.

      @@jasongarringer12 Thanks, I have hard clay similar to you. I'm in Sacramento. I am going to rototill it a bit to take an inch or two off then fill with top soil, wet and fill again. Do you have any seed recommendations? The big boxes obviously push Scotts 50/50 shade and sun mix but I just want something that will germinate and not be spotty. I want to save some money by going seed over sod.

      @jasongarringer12  3 роки тому +1

      Well, I think Sacramento has a lot of heat in the summer, like I have here in Texas. You might get consider doing what I do. I have bermudagrass growing in the spring and summer, and it lasts even into the fall. But when weather gets cold and the days get shorter, bermudagrass goes dormant and turns brown for the winter. For me, That’s the perfect time to overseed the lawn with perennial ryegrass. That way, I can have that beautiful green color until it turns warm again. At that time, I can spray out the ryegrass and let the bermudagrass come back to life.

    Great idea on how to level the soil. Will be installing KBG sod this Spring and will want to get it as flat as possible. I mow below 1" with my Liberty 43. I also have the Earthwise 7 blade , Fiskars and Great States mowers as well and I was using the Earthwise daily and The Allett on the weekends so I could stripe. The Earthwise was the best of the 3 manual reel mowers to me to minimize the washboard effect and if you mow in multiple directions they do go away. I have a small lawn so it's easier to do that. Oh and you have been subbed by Striperman too :)

    I realize this is not so much about lawn leveling for over-seeding and lawn repair as it is leveling by hand with minimal equipment to prepare an area for seeding or sod installation. Also, a three-way mix of soil composed of 1/3 topsoil, 1/3 peat or compost, 1/3 sand works very well for this purpose. Thanks again.

    • @jasongarringer12
      @jasongarringer12  3 роки тому

      Thanks for watching! Don’t get discouraged. If there’s one piece of advice I can give for a nice lawn is to just be consistent. Especially when it comes to watering and mowing. Keep it hydrated (but don’t overdo it.). Mow at least once a week, but even more if the grass is growing fast. Having a good base of soil will always help. Actually it’s the hardest part just getting the soil evened out. Keep going and eventually it will start to look great if you are consistent.

  • @davidwhite7309
    @davidwhite7309 3 роки тому +2

    • @jasongarringer12
      @jasongarringer12  3 роки тому

      I would mow the grass as low as you can before you add the soil. Some say to completely scalp it down depending on the grass you have. Mine was more of a renovation, so any grass I had was scalped prior to putting down the soil. . That tree in the front yard did most of the work of shading/killing out most of the grass. What kind of grass do you have right now?

    • @davidwhite7309
      @davidwhite7309 3 роки тому

      Now I have a mix of zoysia and fescue. I continue to put fescue seed down hoping to kill the zoysia out.

    • @jasongarringer12
      @jasongarringer12  3 роки тому +3

      I would say, if you’re willing to keep up the overseeding with fescue, I would mow as low as possible and also dethatch before putting down soil. Zoysia is prone to a lot of thatch build up. I know it’ll be a lot of work up front, but the lawn will be level AND you’ll be giving those seeds a great seedbed for maximum germination. Mow low. Dethatch. Remove all the clippings and thatch. Level the lawn, then overseed and water.

    • @jasongarringer12
      @jasongarringer12  3 роки тому +4

      Also I forgot to mention a couple of the reasons why you want to mow so low: When adding topsoil over existing grass, part of that process is to work the soil into the lawn until the grass blades poke back through the soil (so the grass plant doesn’t get smothered.). If the grass is too long, it will just lay over under the weight of the soil, and it will be harder for you to get the blades to stand back up and work the soil down towards the roots. Hope this helps!!

    Is there any compacting throughout the process? Idk if I am seeing this wrong but I feel like one step on this will sink into it, unless the 50% sand keeps it dense maybe? It looks like you are dropping it in place and just running a 2x4 over it and it just stays in place.

  • @sean3836

    Great video. I would only caution that a 50/50 mix is a lot of compost, and as a result the lawn will settle in many unpredictable ways over time as things break down and decompose. Meaning it wont remain level or rather smooth after a year or two. If you are working with an absolutely trash topsoil to begin with, like you were in the beginning, then by all means do this. However, if you are fortunate enough to be working with better soil to begin with I would just use a high quality top soil. Or if you aren't doing a complete reno, you could consider leveling with sand.

      Actually i ordered 5 yards but it looked closer to 6 yards. All of it went down and in the end I had zero left. And the total front yard area was about 1100 sq. ft.

      @@jasongarringer12 that's very helpful. I have a similar project planned for the fall. I wasn't sure how many yards I'd need to order but seeing how much 5-6 yards cover is very helpful. Plus it looks like you had some deep sections you needed to fill so 5 yards for me will be more than enough.

      I definitely had some deep sections that needed to be raised.

    Great tips, and great informative video. I will use this technique myself. I'm a subscriber now to learn more tips about lawn repairing and levelling. I was just wondering two things:
    1. Do you compress the soil in some way afterwards to make it more compact or just leave it as it is. Just wondering about footprints and sinking when walking on the new grass.
    2. Do you fill in the gaps in the soil in some way after removing the pipes. Would love to see you in action doing this, since yo seem to do everything in a smart effective way.

      Thanks for the kind words! Yes, it’s necessary to go back over the soil with a lawn roller to press down the soil. I also wet the soil (lightly, no pooling) to assist with settling. Also, after removing the pipes, I filled the gaps with soil and rolled the area with a lawn roller. Thanks for subscribing!

    Great video! Going to give my yard a go. What song is playing 1/2 way in?

    I just saw this video (after seeing the part 1 and putting my question about rolling the lawn). So you did roll the lawn with the roller. Any update videos that aspect of the leveling? I didn't see any videos from your list about that although you mentioned you have videos about lawn rolling?

    Great video! Did you add anything for weeds before/after seeding? I just got a load of 50/50 screened top soil and I am concerned about weed matter within.

    I didn’t see how you managed to fix your level from the first video after the rain.

    Kind of disappointed you didn't show what happened after the down pour of rain. Did it ruin or alter what you had accomplished already?

    I love your tricks of leveling. I wonder if you know what soil to mix for lavender plants and rosemary. I am in the Bay Area. My rosemary plants die very easily even in a big pots.

      It could be something other than the soil. Too much, or not enough sunlight? Too much water? Too much fertilizer? It’s hard to make a recommendation.

    Great job your level turned out great. My builder used the cheap contractor top soil to make a raised mulch bed around the tree. Is is possible to screen that left over contractor soil of all the rocks and use that to spot level certain spots in the yard?

    • @jasongarringer12
      @jasongarringer12  2 роки тому

      The short answer is yes, but it depends. I would prefer to mix in some better soil with the cheap stuff, then spread it around. If you can find a way to enrich the soil with some organic matter, or even mix in some manure or compost, it will help improve the soil much better.
