The guitar solo in this song is one of Kirk Hammett's greatest compositions. I've been listening to it for over 30 years and it still hits me like the first time I heard it.

He put the emotion into this one for sure, it was a mixture of frustration, anger and pain, apparently he was pissed off with how many takes it was taking to record it and just ripped this one out of his soul, with the magic you hear as the result.

If you watch the documentary A YEAR AND A HALF it shows Kirk trying to do the solo and after he does it the first time Bob Rock, their producer says "OK, no go back and do it, you know GOOD," cause his original solo was crap for this song.

It's proof that the quality of the solo, music, is not based on how fast it is, how technical it's, but how it sounds, and matching the song. Thats why Metallica is the best in tha game

Kirk proves in this guitar solo that there's more emotion to be given and heard in a few slowly bent notes than in a hundred quickly played notes. It's one of the best non-shredder solos done by a shredder.

    • @heavenhelp1982
      @heavenhelp1982 Рік тому

@ClifHaley The irony is that Hammett was trying to do a shred-type solo when they were recording parts for this particular song and Bob Rock (along with Lars) ridiculed him, poked and prodded until it resulted in this epic solo. It was Kirk's response.

He talks highly of Alex Lifeson of Rush in a documentary in influencing his phrasing. He's very good at dynamics, there's definitely shredding in there but also times where it slows down.

James' upbringing (the singer) was quite oppressive in parts. Both parents were part of Christian Science, which believes that you should not seek medical help if you get sick. So his mother died of cancer when he was 16 due to this. Before or after (can't remember) his dad left. So this is James sharing his pain and abandonment.

Unforgiven is just another in a long line of epic-level songs Metallica has written, composed and performed over the years. They are masters of their craft. Never been to a show of theirs that disappointed either. They always deliver live on stage. Give "One" a listen next. Forgive me if I’m echoing another comment… this song is about a boy growing up in a religious household, forced religious teaching down his throat and taught not to question God (first verse). The second verse the boy has grown but he’s now in a battle with his upbringing- a life to please God and others - family, priests, whoever. He then grows old “die regretfully “. “That old man here is me” refers to the lyricist- James Hetfield, Metallica’s lead singer who grew up in a strict, religious house, who lost his mother at age 16 because medical intervention was against their religion. He believed she could have been saved if it weren’t for their beliefs.

Lyrically, this song is a cradle-to-the-grave story. Following the life of the protagonist, from birth to death.
Finally, we hear the line "That old man here is me." This shifts the song from the Third to the First Person. Which changes the song from being about some distant stranger, to being about the narrator.
This song is a grim but beautiful tale, about enduring a life of mediocrity.

You need to check out the theatrical version of "One", not the live version, not the radio edit, but the full-length video

    The day that never comes
    Unforgiven II
    Unforgiven III
    Dyers Eve
    Creeping Death
    When ever i may roam
    Sad but true
    And justice for all

Can I be so bold to do a few suggestions, since you say you love to feel the music? Try some Led Zeppelin: Achilles last stand, Since I've been loving you, Wholla lotta love, and many others really give some thrills. Ofcourse there is Stairway to heaven, but that song is known by every living soul on this planet. Ow and there is Black Sabbath. They have some song that really do it: War Pigs, Children of the grave, they are just wow. Just suggestions. Ow btw, love your work.

I was the singer & lyricist in my band and I didn't care about the lyrics. I wrote for melodies, the beat, the feel.

Definitely add Pink Floyd to your videos list, theyre the orignal Tool haha. Seriously though both bands have incredibly emotional songs with amazing lyrics and instrumentals. Pink Floyd id start with 'Time' or The live version of Comfortably Numb for one of the best guitar solos of all time. A Tool songs to try next id reccomend 'The Grudge or Lateralus'

While I agree to an extent, Tool is nowhere near the band Pink Floyd is, and that is with the upmost respect.

I saw an abhorrent lack of people recommending you check out the sequels to this song "Unforgiven II" and "Unforgiven III" so I will. 2 and 3 are direct sequels to this and they continue the story of the person this story is written around.
