This was co-written by Ulrich, Hammett and Hetfield. This song is about the struggles he had with religion-related to his mom’s death. His relatives did not want to give James’s mom the treatment she needed because they thought God would help her through it. He starts to question the legitimacy of religion.
Pretty much all of the Black Album was all about James, not intentionally of course, but it really became a therapy session for him. A lot of religious questioning and sorrow

I have seen them many many times, even worked for them a few times building their set. Get to know their top songs so the energy will be at its max for you when they play them. They put out a ton of energy, the crowd amplifies it, and the music in the setting of the stage focuses it...to get the most out of it, familiarity is a bonus. You will have a blast.
You gotta watch the video where the guitarist Kirk comes up with this solo. He keeps getting pushed until he finally unleashes this solo during recording!
The solo on this is a textbook definition of wild abandon!! Love. It. Part 2 of this song is pne of my personal favorites.
Live, they were next level good.
I grew up on Metallica, me and 6 mates listening to it in the 80's smoking weed, drinking, tripping out blasting Metallica, getting blown away by how brilliant they were. They will never leave my heart :D They showed us how to not take shit from anyone, stand up for your beliefs, and never accept being treated as a lesser person. Thanks James, and Metallica!
Favourite songs are, early stuff from Kill'em'All and even Load and Reload albums. best Songs iMO are Of Wolf and Man and Bleeding Me
My first live gig was when they first time ever came to my area - the Baltic States for the first time. It was in 2005, when they performed in Estonia for the very first time ever. All 80 000 tickets were sold in like 15-30 minutes! And there was no Internet like nowadays. Everything was sold offline in ticket stores. I spent like 6 hours in a line to get my ticket (it was very expensive for a young guy at the age of 19, of course). This was my first ever live show and of course I will never ever forget. To get closer to the stage I spent almost 11 hours on my feet!! And it was worth it. When they played One, Enter Sandman and Nothing Else Matters one by one, everyone was totally crazy, including myself! I was the happiest person alive! After that I attended two other live shows in my hometown Riga, Latvia. It was also cool, but by far the emotions were never the same.
So happy that you'll be able to see them live! Grew up listening to them and saw them 3 times- an amazing band and one of the greatest metal bands of all-time.
One of my first concerts of Metallica was 23-11-1992 at Hanns-Martin-Schleyer-Halle Stuttgart, still got the ticket :-D

I picked up Ride The Lighting cassette tape at a flea market in Phoenix in 1984 I was 11 years old. Skated home slip the tape into my Walkman snap the headphones on and hit play. The sound smashed straight into my very being. I remember tearing up raising my arms to the sky with pure joy and relief. The anger releasing power of Metallica change me forever. Saw them live twice in the early 90's lost my voice for days each time. I am still that Gen X thrash metal kid today. So excited for you.

For this Unforgiven, I recommend to listen whole trilogy, part II and III too. There nearly two decades between first and third, and all songs share some similarities on music, but still having different feel. Also pay attention to lyrics, they kinda varies of which you can't forgive on different songs. Would be nice to do them quite soon after this first part, so it's easy to compare them.
I know you will love them in concert. I've seen them twice myself. Amazing

I've seen Metallica live twice. Once with Slipknot in 2006, and the second time with The Big Four in 2011. Both times unbelievable, first was still the best (also made me a Slipknot fan). Awesome reaction Inna ❤🤙🦒
I consider this my song. Beaten as a child and forced to follow my fathers dreams instead of my own, I was 40 before I turned my life to what I wanted. Now at 57, ill never forgive him.

Temper your expectations : they're not as good live anymore. Mark my words : you'll have a great time, but they're far from where they were by then (saw them quite a lot of times, but won't go next times they come). First Metallica concert was back in 97 for their Load tour. That was amazing. They've been my favorite band for so long... Well ! Hope you'll have a great time :) Have fun on your journey !
When Metallica is NOT in a rush rhythmically, they are more able to develop their very good musical ideas. This is a very good song, as are others on this album where they made a real change in their sound from previous albums. "Enter Sandman" is an iconic metal anthem.
My favorite song live, was "The Call of Ktulu" during By request tour, as it's very rare to be played.
There is a compilation video of all unique songs during that tour, and it is 2 hour 53 minutes and 11 seconds long.
I recommend it to you to experience at one time.

One of the greatest solos of all time and it was accidental. Kirk struggled writing a solo so much he almost gave up on it. Basically they gave him one more try and was going to put whatever he came up with in the song. The rest is history
I've seen Metallica live I think 8 times now. Seek and Destroy is their best live song (and one of the best live songs period) with the recording from Germany in 1985 being mine and many others favorite because it demonstrates James's showmanship so well and because it was the one featured on the Cliff 'em All video tribute to Cliff Burton. The audio quality is pretty much what you'd expect from a live show recorded on 1985 cameras, but overall it's the best rendition. The 2009 recording in Mexico City is probably the second best and was recorded on more modern tech. There are also popular recordings from Quebec and Seattle, but I don't recommend those especially for a first listen because there are some significant departures from the album version of the song involving changes that they've since gone away from. Seek and Destroy is a must know song for going to a Metallica show.

Also, I saw Metallica at Hartford CT during black album tour. Great show except for the guy a few rows behind us who vomited Jack Daniels all over the floor so we stood in Jack Daniels vomit the whole time.
The guy got kicked out before the show started.

There are three songs that I consider describe my life almost perfectly. This is one of them. The concept of trying to be a good person since a child but circumstances go against me. I end up being bitter and cynical because instead of being rewarded I get punished for trying to be a good guy to the point of wondering why bother staying alive
This is still my fav Metallica song to this day, it's such a powerful song ❤ There's a part 2 and 3 as well which are good, but nowhere near this one 🦒

Did you know that no two giraffes have the same spots? Now you know. As for Metallica, yes I've seen them live in Frankfurt, Germany. One of my favorite songs of theirs is "Frayed Ends of Sanity" off of their "And Justice For All" album, though of all of their albums, "And Justice For All" remains my favorite. I look forward to hearing what you think of them live. I believe Five Finger Death Punch will be touring with them, so you ought to brush up on their music as well. They have a lot of heavy-hitting songs too.

'Enter Sandman' ... 'One' ... 'Nothing else matters'... 'For whom the bell tolls' ... 'Fade to black' ... 'Creeping Death' ... 'Master of Puppets' ... 'Welcome home (Sanitarium)' ... 'Sad but true' ... 'Seek & destroy' ... 'Fuel' 😁
They'll be playing a few songs from other records, but most fans nowadays want songs from their 1991 'black' album that has 'The Unforgiven' on it.
James Hetfield says he wrote 'The Unforgiven' about his parents... being raised in a conservative Christian household that was mired in physical abuse... His dad left the family... his mom died from cancer because of her religious beliefs when James was a teen... He was basically alone in the world at 18 when he went out on his own and sought to become a musician in a metal band... James met Lars Ulrich at 19 and formed Metallica by 1982.

Fan from the start. Just turned 69 and they are still my favoryte band. Got their last album 72 Seasons and there are great songs on it. There are The unforgiven I, II and III, spread over different albums.

The unforgiven trilogy is so great, it is ingenious ❤
The Unforgiven 1 are his parents and the religious society that tried to form him and not letting him think for himself, which made him bitter ("This bitter man is me"), everyone around him are the unforgiven
the Unforgiven 2 is about him opening up to a girl he loved about all this bitterness,, but she ends up hurting him too so she becomes the unforgiven
The Unforgiven 3 is when he has grown up and become a bit wiser and realizes that u can't forgive anyone before u have forgiven urself, so he himself is the unforgiven

I can't wait to see what you think of a Metallica show. Please post next day reactions. I think all of us would love that. This song was deep and meaningful...but not my favorite. At first it was awesome. But as time went, they kept updating new versions and it bored the stuff outta me. Man there are three versions of this. I only liked this one. But the other versions put a bad taste in my mouth. They ruined the content of the original. Just shut up about it already.
