The Unforgiven I, II, III is a beautifully written story that divulges into a timeline of events, talking about James Hetfield's struggle with alcohol addiction, his subsequent battle with alcohol addiction, not being able to forgive his mom and dad who left him at a young age.

One of Kirks best solos of his life. It compliments the song perfectly and isn’t just there as a “look at me, a solo!” type thing. I believe he’s said this is one of the solos he’s most proud of.

The irony, his original solo was horrible. They told him it was rubbish and then he cranks this beauty out.

    • @clonexx
      @clonexx Рік тому +5

@@TheSWCantina The original solo was one he tried spontaneously with no work put into it. I think that’s the one on “A year and a half in the life of Metallica” where everyone cringes at what he’s doing. There’s a couple of very small hints at what the solo would become, but mostly it was soooo bad. Lars cringing in the background was the funniest thing. I remember Bob Rock saying that’s what happens when a guitarist doesn’t do their homework. Once Kirk finally put the time into the solo that it needed, he cranked out this gem. It seems like Bob genuinely pushed him like no other producer had before, to be better.
Also notice it’s one of his solos with very little to no wah pedal in it. That’s always my main criticism of Kirk, the running joke that he has Wah pedals strapped to the bottom of his sneakers.

Hetfield is definitely one of the more interesting lyricists in metal. It helps to know his life story to connect the dots sometimes but other than that, the choice of his topics, his metaphors, phraseology and points of attack make his poetry very enjoyable and thought provoking

As a side note, I once heard it said as we grow and mature, we trade possibility for experience. In pondering this, I've come to realize that, since we can't avoid the trade of possibility, we should make sure that the trade is worth it.

I really enjoy her videos. She seems always so immersed in the song. Sometimes it's just a short pause between two nods, or the blinking of the eyes that lasts half a second longer than usual, that tells you when something suddenly emerged in her consciousness. You know then and from her general demeanor that she's not faking a reaction. It's awesome to watch!

While universal to so many lives and situations growing up, but specifically this was singer (James) lashing back at his parents who controlled his life forcing religion onto him, and stifling his sense of self identity and ability to think for himself - only to have his father leave unceremoniously from the family and his (now) single mother of 2 died a few years later when James was 16. While James likely doesn't have anything against God, he does loathe that it and conformity was forced on him indiscriminately.
I had just started watching reaction videos 2 years ago (during the 2020 lockdowns with nothing better to do), and eventually grew to love so many of the channels. Yours was the 2nd channel I ever found; the first by accident "Rap fan listens to Metallica for first time". Then I did a query to see if any other reactors were listening to Metallica for first time - and that's how I stumbled on your channel and enjoyed your videos. Then you disappeared. Welcome back.

Welcome back, my dear! 🙏🏻❤ I think Metallica surprises people when they decide to open up to what they are, musical therapy. I'm in my 60s and just recently came to this awakening about the band. Very healing. Like a highly tuned machine, Metallica is like going for a long drive, sometimes fast, sometimes slow, curves and close calls. It's a lot like life and we do it without too much worry. When you listen to music, it's the same kind of meditative vibes. Keep reacting. : )

The story behind 'The Unforgiven' traces back to James Hetfield (vocals & guitar) of Metallica, who wrote this about his parents... both he and Kirk Hammett (lead guitar) came from physically abusive & broken homes. A lot of parents don't comprehend the damage they inflict on their children while claiming to 'love' them. James had written a pretty harsh song called "Dyers' Eve" in 1988, where he ripped at his parents as an adult for what he went through as a child.
James came from a conservative Christian family... they believed in Christian Science, where medicine and doctors were not necessary - only "God" would heal through belief and prayers. As a child James was not allowed to attend certain classes in school because of his parents' beliefs... and that made him an outcast. His home life was worse - abuse, punishments for misbehaving... he learned to stay quiet and take everything in silence, hoping that it would pass. His parents divorced, and his father disappeared... he was left at home w/ his sister, whom he would always get into fights with... His mom was unable to cope. She was soon diagnosed w/ cancer and refused treatment, clinging to her beliefs that "God" would heal her... She died when James was just a young teen.
With both parents gone, James and his sister were handed over to an older brother, his sister was kicked out for acting up... James himself gladly left at 18 to become a musician... His experience w/ going out into the world was traumatic, and he fell into drinking at an early age.
That was basically the story of his upbringing... it scarred him to this very day - he recently ended up in rehab again and filed for divorce from his wife. No money, fame, hobbies or distractions could heal what he had experienced.
James finally met Lars Ulrich, an aspiring drummer in 1981... and Lars told him he could get a demo on a friend's indie record label released, and gave the band name 'Metallica' from a fanzine editor. Ron McGovney was Hetfield's roommate and he joined Metallica on bass... a local musician Dave Mustaine joined on guitar. That was the first Metallica, and they started playing gigs in L.A. in 1982.
Hoping to improve the band, Metallica opted to relocate to San Francisco so that bassist Cliff Burton would join. Unfortunately, Dave Mustaine was becoming increasingly violent on drugs and alcohol, and he was fired just before they recorded their first album "Kill 'em all" in 1983 in New York... Kirk Hammett joined on lead guitar and played on that record.
On tour, James was prone to drinking in excess and destroying hotel and dressing rooms. He had broken his arm skateboarding in 1986 and had to perform in a sling while a guitar tech played his parts.
In 1986, Metallica were involved in a tour bus accident in Sweden and Cliff Burton was killed... James was re-traumatized by that loss, seeing a close friend die... and alcohol was the only way to cope. When he recorded Metallica's 4th album 'And justice for all" in 1988, James' lyrics were just frenzied and violent - every song was just angry and cynical... many Metallica fans felt the way he did. He admitted that he would resort to abusive behavior to either keep people at bay or demand that they not leave him.
Over the years, James softened his outlook, especially for his late mom... he did write 'The God that failed' in 1991 about her beliefs that took her away from him... He wrote the song 'Until it sleeps' in 1996 about her battle w/ cancer... and the country song 'Mama said' in her memory.
Dave Mustaine, who went on to form Megadeth after being fired from Metallica, had his own battles w/ drug and alcohol abuse... he also came from an abusive & broken home... his dad spent his time stalking his mom and sisters, and they would have to relocate because there was no "restraining order" to protect them, growing up. His dad eventually died of an aneurysm... his mom became a Jehovah's witness... Fed up, Dave left home at 15 and became a pot dealer in L.A. and got his guitar and record collection from the trade.
After his mom died in the 90's, Dave wrote a powerful song - 'A tout le monde' about dying and leaving behind loved ones.

So great to see you back. It's been a while. This is a great song. One of the first ones I learned to play off the Black Album on my guitar and bass.

Dang I just checked out your song "ORIGINAL SONG ABOUT ROAD TRIP"
It's like an old school professional song. Song could easily be on the charts or in a movie.

One of my favorite songs, in that untouchable echelon. Worth exploring is the version of this recorded by Ha*Ash and released as part of the Metallica Blacklist.
If you are feeling adventurous I recommend listening to the recently released 'Pain Remains' trilogy by Lorna Shore. It is a masterpiece of emotional delivery. Lyric video is a must, the vocals featured are nothing like you've ever heard before. Full disclosure this trilogy will hammer on some potential triggers, it deals with the loss of a loved one and resulting emotional states.
