- The next two weeks, we'll be doing reactions to adaptations of the beloved children's novel The Secret Garden.
Today we'll be starting with the iconic 1993 adaptation. The Secret Garden was directed by Agnieszka Holland and produced by Francis Ford Coppola and American Zoetrope. It stars Kate Maberly as Mary Lennox, a young orphan girl who is sent to live with her mysterious uncle at Misselthwaite Manor. There she will uncover the secrets of screams echoing in the night, a hunchback man in perpetual grief, and the garden that seems to be locked away from the world.

Genuinely feel this film is a masterpiece, I first watched it when it came out in 1993, I was seven years old and it left a big impression. I return to it a lot. The 2020 adaptation does not even come close.
This is my favorite version of this movie. There's a certain darkness about it. The ending always makes me misty too.
Love the dark elements of the movie
It’s dark but it’s also light and beautiful. Some years ago, my then-boyfriend noted that his go-to escapist entertainment was The Office series and mine was this movie. We both struggled with chronic depression. It helped me get out of my holes 🕳️. At least while it played.
I have seen all of the movie adaptations of The Secret Garden, and this one is my favorite. It has a timeless quality to it that the other versions don't have, it doesn't shoehorn in a stupid romance with Mary and Collin as adults like the 1987 movie focussed on, and it doesn't completely massacre the story like the 2020 film did.

I don't even want to know. The Secret Garden is one of my favourite childhood books. Knowing there's an adaption that massacres the story makes me sad.
One of my favourite childhood movies the soundtrack is so beautiful.
Mysterious, expressive, it's easily one of the top two original scores I've heard for this channel.

What you said about set design is spot on. Nowadays establishing shots and buildings are all reused to save cost, and most sets are just green screen.
This is, and will remain, the most dear film to my heart. The love story between Mary and Dickon is probably the most beautiful in all cinema.
Problem with the 2020 version is the garden is too magical, it doesn’t feel real. The emotional beats are never earned, it felt rushed. The 1993 version ironically feels magical because of its humble earthy feel. The 2020 version just left me feeling empty.
I was like are we going to discuss how she can't cry no well that's a huge part of the magical story completely cut out.
I find a lot of movies now are like this they miss the earthy feel , really miss the mark , they think by adding special effects it makes it even more whimsical but it really takes it away . I love practical effects used when they can be !
Omg i LOVE that you got emotional... because I did too as an adult watching it again .., it was recommended to me on demand on my TV and I decided to rent it because it was some type of nostalgia for me and I haven’t seen it for years and yeah I did cry a 33 year old woman lol

This movie has a strange place in my memories. I remember finding it enchanting and terrifying. I fell in love with cobblestone-covered Ivy, skeleton keys, elephants and intrigue. Yet some of the scenes scared me and gave me nightmares. The dream of both mothers calling out (and specifically where Mary was lost and crying out) echoed in my nightmares. The dogs fighting on the stairs and for some reason the ending with the music and the vast open landscape. Yet I watched our VHS any chance I could.

I cry every time I watch this film
This is one of my fave movies from my childhood, absolutely had an incredible impact on my love of nature and growing into wanting good relationships with people around me, the music and specific acting styles from each character were so much to me
I like how it's a movie about taking your time, letting things grow, change, and heal. I think it's a worthwhile lesson.
THANK YOU so much for making this, I enjoyed it so much! This has been my all-time favorite movie since I was a kid, and I've never been able to find good content or a solid fan base for it anywhere. This video was awesome, I hope it gets more views!

Thank you for such thoughtful commentary on one of my personal favorites. I love how big and textured everything is in the film. I believe it was shot in 1.85:1 aspect ratio. I mostly watch this film for the aesthetics more than anything else.

I have not seen this movie in almost 30 years. We had a joke about my youngest sister referencing all the people dying at the dinner party and the little girl asking, “if everyone’s dead, who’s going to dress me?” I haven’t wanted to spend the $$$ to rent it to check my memory of that particular scene, I don’t do sad, but this movie review has just about compelled me to just do it.

this was my absolute favourite movie growing up. the combination of the music, underlying themes and beautiful setting always get me crying by the end and leave me with a feeling of magic.
re: the child actors, i agree with you that they hold back a little yet are a little over the top, but as the film is very much from a child's perspective, i think it works well. as a ten year old kid everything does seem very dramatic, and that's something i thinks this film gets across very well!
The secret garden and the little princess has a very special place in my heart
I adored (and still adore) this film when I was a child. It was a visual treat and appealed to my sensibilities. But there was also a mystery and off-kilter quality to it that scared and fascinated me in equal measures. I love rewatching it as an adult for many of the reasons that you pointed out. I was able to absorb so much of the subtextual characterizations and storytelling as a child but didn't have the understanding yet to process the nuances in the character's arcs. It's a lovely piece of film.

This is probably my all time favorite movie and it was incredibly formative for me. I’m really glad you enjoyed it. I think one of the reasons the buildings and scenery look so much better than films today is that CGI is relied on much too heavily in modern movies. It detracts from the quality. I saw all the CGI in the trailer for the 2020 movie and decided I’d never watch it.
Thank you! It's for the best that you didn't watch the 2020 version. Whether as a fan of the book or the 90's film, the 2020 adaptation makes a *lot* of questionable decisions.

I was going to reply to my own thread but I wasn't able to reply to my own comment lol, sorry for the spam - I just wanted to say that you are so right about movies in the 90s looking more real then movies nowadays. The only thing they care about now is how HD, colorful/ contrasted, or *crisp* it looks. I miss movies that looked like they actually existed, because you can imagine yourself within them! Maybe it has something to do with memory, or just how realistic things look when they're not trying to be so visually bold. I've been watching a ton of older movies just for that reason!

I actually appreciate well-done CGI animals 9:29 instead of real animals on film, given that most animals on sets are forced entertainers. Also, many production companies bend the rules to get certified that “no animals were harmed” during filming but that’s not always guaranteed, as deeper investigation by journalists have proven thus far. The CGI animals are a sign of films adapting to avoid using real animals for humane, financial and legal purposes. That’s why most recent films opt for the CGI instead of the real thing. I do agree some CGI is done poorly but I have seen some notable CGI animals on film and I’m here for it ❤️
The soundtrack is so amazing. Zbigniew Preisner is so underrated. The music has been a staple on my Playlist since the original ipods came out.
If you haven’t seen My Life As A Dog, you might enjoy it as well. Lovely Bildungsroman. Lasso Hallstrom ended up being a gigantic disappointment, but we didn’t know that then. I suspect you’ve probably seen the Apu Trilogy, but if you haven’t...

Also p.s I work in film, and we've just gotten lazy, and corner cutting. It's cheaper and you have more control when you build a set. It takes talented people to make existing spaces work for them.
i loved this when i was little. There is the Secret Garden 2 with mary and colin agian. Its not the 2020 its still 90s or 2000's. Mary and Colin are older.

5:23 I can't be the only one that thinks that maybe they were going to release unity later and rogue was intended to be a much fuller game than it was and they simply pulled back on it and threw everything they had at unity when it still needed at least another year of development
I want to know what parody you're referring to because I have yet to find a MadTV parody of the Secret Garden. I've searched through all the episode synopsis with no hits. If you find out or if anyone else knows, let us know in the comments. Whenever my friend and I go bank fishing at the lake or nearby creek, we joke about how there's always a secret garden through the thicket when one of us pulls back the shrubbery trying to discover unfished areas. Lol. It's funny to us.

I think this is the one that looked like what my imagination created in my head while reading the book. The earlier one I think was more gritty and realistic as far as rural life in that period. The 2020 film was a bright shiny fantasy, but so shallow. And the Shirley Temple version is pretty much the worst book adaptation ever.

Just finished reading the book today and watched the movie.
Lol this used to be one of my favorite movies when I was a kid ... BUT I just watched it as an adult and YES I never realized the love triangle in it ? Lol very weird when you watch movies as a kid and Watch them as adults do you notice small things that just aren’t normal
It wasn't really a 'love triangle' 🤣. They are small children. They're limited on the knowledge of how to accurately express themselves lol. Collin doesnt want to be abandoned by Mary, like his mother and father did to him.
She is aware that she wouldn't, and isn't going to marry her cousin. He knows that logically as well. But his tantrum throwing (and proposal) are him trying to keep her closer to him, than to Dicken. So she doesn't go off and abandon him too. Because Mary is all he truly has, before he and his father are reunited.
Collin doesn't know any other kind of love, than a man who deeply loved his wife.. aka his father and mother. That is what he knows, so that is how he expressed his love for Mary.
He is a literal child whos never been outside of his own bedroom.. and hasn't seen any other forms of love displayed around him, and doesn't know any better lol. He's never even seen friendship portrayed lol, because all he has are servants, and a father that hes quite literally never seen one single time, in his entire life. But who he also lives in the same house as.
It was clear to me even as a child... that Collin wasn't actually romantically in love with Mary lmao. She was just the first person to treat him like a normal person, and not like a fragile piece of glass.. and he didn't want to lose that.
The fact anyone is making it out to be creepy or weird is just being ridiculous, or just isnt paying attention.

Colin being still a child helps the pain of being rejected and abounded kind of and not evey child holds the pain so fast and deep, like Mary, Colin is prob more forgiving and not as angry by his situation like Mary was. Not to mention his father is still live so he had hope one day things will change unlike Mafy whise mother and father are dead.
I- as someone who's read the book this version hurts to see o.o It mightve been iconic in the 90s but its so painfully different, I feel like they failed to translate Mary's character properly onto the screen. She was neglected by her parents but she was oblivious that things should have been better, she saw it all as normal, and she was definitely wayyy more spoiled and she slowly starts to get better and there was no picture of her aunt and mother AND Medlock NEVER slapped anyone! The servants all basically agreed Mary meeting Colin was the best thing that happened to Colin! Its just so sjdbbdbdsjshshdbhs I still recognize that its considered a classic though

I gotta admit i love Maggie Smith as Professor McGonagal but not here. I doubt Medlock lashed out at anyone in the book the way Smiths portrayal of Medlock slapped Dickons sister. Its like watching McGonagal abuse a student at Hogwarts
I get you. The attachment to an actor's most iconic role is really hard to shake. I don't remember if book Medlock ever strikes Martha, but she is just as, if not more neglectful and disdainful of Mary. She goes full Dursleys 🤬
It's definitely a bit shocking to see, especially in a movie that's primary audience was children but I think it's very accurate to the time period, late Victorian/early Edwardian era. Especially because Martha expresses to Mary that she was taken on as a servant as a favor. She's someone born to poverty with little to no standing at all, which is quite sad but does provide the context as to Medlock's authoritative behavior towards her.
