I literally gasped out loud when I saw that you did this. Such an underrated classic, especially for girls of a certain age range. Such a beautiful movie.

@@theshadowfax239 ooh i think back in the day the VHS tapes came in a box set, and i think there were commericals where you could order them as a "collection" if iam remembering correctly. it seems like they were very intertwined.

They are both movies based off of books written by Frances Hodgson Burnett. The two movies could also be bought as a set

This is such a sweet movie! You're definitely not the target audience for it. I'm so glad you were such a good sport and gave it a shot. The book was classic! It wasn't so much about all girls being princesses just for being girls, but about how even the poorest girl can be a princess when she shows kindness, gentleness, helpfulness, courteousness, and generosity with what she has. Sarah was just as much a princess when she was rich as when she lost everything because in both circumstances she chose to act like one in the best possible way. I feel like that theme didn't quite come across the same way in the movie as in the book, but you still picked up on it perfectly.

It's alright. I loved this growing up. I used to cry a scene. I had this movie on a shared disc once. It had two moves on it. The Secret Garden and this movie.

Btws, this is set in WWI, 1914-ish since it's early in the war. The US doesn't get involved until 1917. So if you're not familiar with history, think more along the Victorian-type society (actually Belle Epoque - with Titanic as another cultural landmark).

Also fun fact: the girl that plays Sara is actually an heiress from an incredibly wealthy family in America! In 2002, she and her brother filed a lawsuit for $6 Billion against a dozen of her family members because their trusts had been misappropriated by them.

Woah, that is very interesting. I was wondering if the actress grew up to be a star, but now that you say this, I can see that presence and class that she exudes is obviously not acting lol. Great casting

Thankyou all for the really lovely comments.
I hope my style of reaction was still enjoyable to watch, even though the movie didn't hit me in the feels.

Actually this is world war 1, due to the yellow poison gas in the trenches and the early versions of cars in this movie. Also the women’s clothing is 1910s

Well this is an unexpected treat! This is the first movie my mom took me to, just us, when I was a child, so it has a special place in my heart. The book is good, too, but it has a different ending - her dad really is dead, but the family next door takes her in. It’s all rather twee and sugary, tho, so I’m curious to see what you think.

The thing with all those officers showing up is that they’re not only there for Sara. They obviously came to take the stolen goods that Minchin told them about.

LOVE THIS! Was one of my favorites from Blockbuster- like tried to choose it every week. @promisemochi mentioned Secret Garden from '93. If you get a chance it is a great similarly minded film based on a book from the same author as A Little Princess. Fun fact: this is not set in the 40s for WWII. It's the Boer War her father goes to fight in...1899-1902

Miss Minchin is a piece of work. So much of her insecurity abusive behavior and jealousy is being projected towards Sara. I’m glad she got the Karma she deserves. Btw its harp she’s playing not a cello.

Sara's character is Very important especially in her morals; she treats everyone with compassion and equality (a very rare thing for the time), and she uses her imagination to Help the other girls through difficulty like with Lottie and even sharing that her mother is dead too. and the biggest moral she showed was giving what little she had to a family that had less and keep giving to others. the boy gave her his money and she gave that kindness forward; from a few cents, to a cake, to a flower for a grieving man. she didn't know these people but she gave to them in their time of hardship and grief. it's a very important and special moral to have especially now with homelessness numbers up. Sara's morals of kindness are something to remember; you don't have to give money, give a homeless person a sandwich or water or a tray of veggies. that is worth even more than money: it's priceless. people should take care of each other; give kindness.
