2:12 1990? Wasnt rhandy rhoads already dead many years in 1990?!?0
Poké- Champ ya I miss spoke "1980"
ghoooost
I knew where he was in 1990, I just wanted to see if you knew where he was
1982, brah
@@samuraiguitarist And that is why you got a thumbs down. Unacceptable mistake and you were sleeping at the switch. Can't have that.
Where's the.. Where's the hello kitty guitar?
Rudy Ayoub hey bro did you write this comment yourself? Write another one bro you’re so good
Write something else bro
Bro do it again bro can we have another bro
Wow bro wow
no way bro
Next do six legendary stories about 6 guitar picks.
#1 pick of destiny
That would be really interesting. A notable example would be santana's pick during the late sixties, prominently the woodstock performance. It was large and really pointy, literally a triangle.
Absolutely, I've known guitarists who use ones that are as large as their hand to play lead lines because the crux of the movement would be rooted in their palm rather than fingertips.
#1 Van halen
after a year i still have my first pick
I've got a good story about another guitar SRV played on a recording.
My dad lived in Austin back when SRV was starting out. By 'starting out,' I mean when he was playing nearly empty bars, where even the people who were there weren't even listening. SRV and my dad became good friends. In fact, my dad has stories about a lot of legends active in the Austin blues scene from that period. Now, even when SRV began to get big, he still wasn't rich, often sleeping on the couches of his friends, including my dad's now and then. At one point, he went off to record something (I couldn't tell you which recording it was, I'd have to ask my dad, but if I remember correctly it was out in California), and the producer or someone told him to use a guitar different than his main one. The guy let him use a white strat, and they got the record done. A while later, SRV was back in Austin, and was sleeping at another one of his friend's apartments, I believe in the same building my dad lived in at the time. SRV still had the white strat at this point, under the impression that they had given it to him. He was showing it off to my dad and the friend he was staying with. He especially loved that it was like the one Hendrix played at Woodstock. Anyways, after a while, SRV had left town for one reason or another, but had accidentally left the white guitar behind. A few more weeks pass, and a very nervous SRV shows back up, frantically asking about the guitar. Apparently, it had been lent to him, not given to him, and the owner was coming after him.
The guy he had been staying with didn't still have the guitar though. He had hit some rough times and sold it to a pawn shop.
All the color drained out of SRV's face. At that moment, he wasn't just the whitest blues guitarist alive, he was the whitest guy alive.
Thankfully, the strat was still at the shop, and SRV was able to get it back.
5:28 just imagine the case for this one
It's not one piece, is made with 4 small guitars that click together
I think he’s wrong about it having been recovered. What I heard was that only the top two necks were recovered and the bottom two are still missing.
A future episode needs to include Iommi's Signature SG, 'Old Boy', This series has been great so far, your flair for the tales of these guitars is simply invigorating.
Rene Martinez himself said in an interview that SRV specifically asked for a lefty tremolo. It wasn't just 'laying around'
That's how I heard the story. He WANTED a lefty trem because it had the bar on top like Hendrix and he thought it was a better place for it anyway.
The most interesting part of SRV's #1 is HOW he acquired it. He would play guitars for hours at Ray Hennig's Heart of Texas Music, essentially lounging in Ray's shop daily without buying anything. Ray told Stevie he could take one home as long as he brought it back the next day. He did this a few times until Texas musician Christopher Cross traded his Strat for a Les Paul at Ray's shop. Stevie took it home on loan and never brought it back.
I am a simple man
I see SRV
And I click like.
Brian May's guitar the red special seriously he's a legend
Please do same with bass guitars too
Ivy HC That'd be cool, I'd love to see something on Les Claypool's basses
Andrew Pappas same
Yeah! I would love to see the Paul's Ricken
I mean, Claudio Sanchez's E2 that he broke the headstock off of twice in mad fits on stage is pretty cool. He even broke it at the end of the first song of the set, was handed another guitar in the wrong tuning for the next song, then adjusted his playing to accommodate. Looks nice too.
How do you steal a four-neck guitar? Like, how would you even transport it?
helicopter blade
@@dresixx92102 xD
It was stolen to order by a collector, the same guy also had both Townsend and Entwhistle's instruments that were stolen at Live Aid as well as Brian May's backup Guild (If Brian doesn't have the old lady in his sight his tech does). As well as a lot of high investment bursts and so on. Was pretty big news.
@@Djarra do you have a link to a news article?
ha gay
Rory Gallagher's 1961 Stratocaster
Eoghain murphy 100% agree
YES!!!
The story of SRV's #1 is ACTUALLY quite interesting. The owner of a music shop in Austin gave him the guitar. Stevie would spend hours playing guitars in his shop, but couldn't afford a good guitar.. Up until a 4 or 5 years ago you could still go into the shop and on a good day he would be happy to tell stories about Stevie, Jimmie, and other great musicians that frequented his store. Unfortunately the store is gone.
There was Peter Frampton’s Les Paul that was shown on his album Frampton Comes Alive. It was stolen in South America and was thought to be long gone. It turned up some thirty years later and was returned to Frampton.
3H, no less!
Steve Vai also had a 3 neck guitar where one neck is set left handed! It's heart shaped and can be seen in David Lee Roth's video of: just like Paradise!
David Gilmour's black strat
Damien Betancur where is it
Yes please!!
Just recently found your vids and subbed. Saw all the famous guitar vids and was a bit bummed not to see SRV's number....then low and behold!
This is an awesome video. Great job really love it.
A couple suggestions for guitars are J.J. Cale's modified Harmony guitar. And also Jeff Worley's (Jackyl) custom (and customized) Dean Thoroughbred.
Awesome video..I like the fact that it covered a wide range guitarists..! Keep em coming.!
Would love to see Waylon Jennings leather covered Telecaster’s story told in one of these
Search: Paul Foster interview about Waylon Jennings. He tells a very detailed story about how Waylon's guitar came to be.
Another great video Samtarrist
Can you add Kurt Cobian's Vandilism Guitar to the next list?
Or his Univox, or his Jaguar
Or his Jag-Stang since he liked part of one and part of another.
Or his rare Gospel model Mosrite.
You are my hero for how you started this video and the intro for no1
Great vid, as always.
Also, nice Zappa Beard you got there. Really suits you.
I'm still waiting for Doyle Frankenstein's Annihilator guitar lol
Right?!
Sadly, this isn't a channel we should come to looking for mentions of punk rock.
It's a pretty simple story
However am upset he doesn't have a proper production model of it
The oktober one wasn't exactly close
Schekter were supposed to be making one. But Doyle did say "They have to make em right" so maybe they didn't. Although I think the blue one that Alyssa occasionally uses is a Sheckter.
Thanks for saying what I was thinking!

Dear Samuraiguitarist,
I am a huge fan of your content: from your awesome videos like these, to your explorations with weird guitar pedals, and especially your sensei series. I found a few cool axes that you may want to consider if you ever want to make another “legendary/famous guitar” lists. This isn’t a bash, because I feel you’ve done a spectacular job with these lists. I just think it would be awesome to hear you talk about some of these axes. Much love and respect ✊
Steve Marriott’s- Wiltshire
Kurt Cobain - Jagstang
Frank Zappa - “Roxy” SG
George Harrison - “Rocky” Strat
Jimmy Page - Double necked SG
Jerry Garcia - “Tiger”
Bo Diddly - Cigar box
Keith Richards - “Micawber” Tele
Bruce Springsteen - “Esquire” (Tele)
Missed the next event with the Zappa Strat. The Zappa estate made him give the guitar back. Dweezil said his dad gave it to him but had no proof so he had to give it back.
How tf is Dweezil not part of the Zappa estate!?
Cusco Othriyas the older siblings run it. The mom owns it and directs their actions. Moon & Dweezil don't have a say in it. Dweezil explains it I believe in the WTF interview.
Michael B ..Gail Zappa ( Frank's wife) died 2 or 3 years ago. She put Ahmet Zappa as executor on the estate. So actually Ahmet made him give the guitar back. Ahmet is Dweezil's older brother.
b b this happened before her dearh.
Every one of these guitars were ones I wanted to see, thank you samuraiguitarist. Dont let trolls get you down on stuff you havent posted, enough people appreciate the things you already have. :-)
So happy to see Randy Rhoads mentioned on this list. That Sandoval Polka Dot V is so epic. Karl Sandoval still makes guitars, and will make you an almost exact copy of Randy's guitar (for several thousand dollars).
Thank you for my recommendations. SRV FOREVER
Crazy how some of the guitars were stolen and then found years later. Some across the globe.
I saw Vai play his triple neck heart-shaped guitar with DLR. It was awesome! Two of the biggest egos on stage at once, you knew it couldn't last, lol
Dude, these vids are great. Watched all three - so good to hear the stories. Here's a few you haven't covered that might interest peeps: Elvis Costello's furniture polish jazzmaster; Neil Young's Black Beauty; Martin Tielli's (Rheostatics) Pearson Pennant double-neck; Paul Weller's WHAAM! Rickenbacker; Pete Townshend's #4 Les Paul; Billy Bragg's Burns Steer; John Fahey's little body / parlour guitar. All just suggestions.
Thank you for including SRV #1
I love the wylde story. He wasnt expecting the design at all. But he maybe said fuck it and took the picture. That time he didnt know it would be a hit.
Fun fact: The poster for “Vertigo” was designed by Saul Bass
One thing I'd like to add. Steve Vai's double neck Ibanez Heart guitar that he had, I believe before Michael Angelo Beto's double neck. I could be wrong about the timeline. But it's about around the same time in the mid 80's.
Vai had a red 3 neck.heart shaped Tom Anderson guitar before his triple necked Jem. It's on the wall of his studio in the premier guitar rig rundown.
If you do another you oughta so jimmy page's dragon tele
ya boi That was the one he used on the first Zeppelin album, right?
Andrew Pappas and 2nd, he used it on alot of them, he played the les paul live more tho
ya boi I know, I'm just saying that I didn't know that Page called his guitar "The Dragon", that's pretty cool
Andrew Pappas he didnt, thats what people call it tho
He also used it for the stairway solo
According to multiple sources, Randy had increasingly grown to not like the sandoval flying V. It had constant tuning issues and there's even audio of him saying this. The polka dots weren't weird. It was part of the quiet riot costume. The inlays are bow ties, also in keeping with the costume.
Theres always Bliie Joes "Blue" Its maybe not amongst the legends of Zappa et al but for a lot of guitarists in their mid thirties ... ish ... Dookie *is* the sound of a guitar from and "Blue" is the guitar we associate with it. Great series thank you and keep the content coming!
I just wanted to add to the SRV stratocaster story a bit. Stevie bought this guitar from Ray Hennig's Heart of Texas music store in 1974 as you said, but what is more interesting is that the guy who traded it in was Christopher Cross, who did the first mods to it, and was the one who frist beat it up. He traded it in on a Les Paul, as he was looking for a "Beefier" tone. Stevie was playing a loaner Guitar at the time, and ray was happy to trade him out for this old beat up one at the time.
It would be cool to hear you talk about the pensa suhrs that Mark Knopfler commissioned to be what he liked about both strata and Les Paul's
Those srv decals were bought at a truck stop in my home town in Dexter Michigan
Lefty trem on a right handed guitar. BRILLIANT!
A head talking about guitars. Some pictures thrown in. Thumbs up!
"what about Lil Wayne´s legendary guitar?" ;)
David Tilling Let's not forget Nick Jonas' legendary Blue Tele. He absolutely trashed that thing.
Yeah, that's a good one! these better be in the next video!!
Lil Wayne is already a legend by itself!
Lil Wayne killed Steve Vai with sheer guitar skillz
Lil Wayne's fingers are so fast he doesn't use Finger esae he uses liquid flame retardant to keep his neck from bursting into flames! 🔥
Anybody remember 'Shock em' Dead' from the late 80s early 90s? It's a B-Movie Michael Angelo Batio was in with Tracy Lords.
Long time SRV guitar tech Rene Martinez says that the guitar was a 62 both body and neck but that the pickups had 1959 written on the back of them .... and that this was why Stevie commonly referred to the guitar as a 59
Jesse Howard
yes and he also referred to it as his 1st wife also just to let ya know.
He got it from charlies guitar shop and christopher cross previously owned it.
SRV's #1 was a 62 neck with a 59 body. He said in an interview that his strat was a 59, because it was marked as such by fender in the neck pocket. From what I understand he pickups are also 59. He said it was a 59 because the body and electronics were from 59. Now, he didn't realize it was a Frankenstein strat when he bought it but didn't care. Side note, 50's strats didn't have the rosewood neck option they were all solid one piece maple. And, according to his tech he had a few different necks on his #1 and they were all early 60's rosewood fretboard necks. The red strat, which was his #2 back in the day, was stipped of it's neck when he broke the one on #1. And, his tech also said that because Stevie preferred such huge frets that after so many replacements the wood was not able to hold them anymore and he had to play musical necks on all his strats. At one point there may not have been but one or two of the about 7 or 8 vintage strats that didn't have a neck from another one on it. It just promotes the next best neck he had up the line.
Here are a couple more to find the stories for:
David Gilmour’s Black Strat
The Edge’s Explorer
Eric Clapton’s Blackie
Any guitar from Muse (he puts effect pedals in the guitar and has a midi controller built in, another is a double neck of a guitar and a keyboard)
Jimmy Page’s triple neck Acoustic.
I love your respect towards your content
You deserve a metal for including Randy's guitar. Thank you.
How about showcasing Jimmy Page's Les Paul Custom "Black Beauty"??
That axe right there is an absolute work or art!
I thought i watched all these then I always find one that slipped away
Love your channel! These are some of my favorite guitar players ( except for the last dude).... Plus Eric Clapton and David Gilmore.
Good guitar info
I CANT BELIEFE you didn't include Danny Bonaduce's rickenbacker bass from his tour with the Partidge Family.
all scalloping gives you is more control and it teaches you how little pressure you need to fret a note. The only guys who struggle are the ones who started with acoustics with 13-56 in standard E. Aside from that it's just a neck that has way more control and the strings stay new longer on them
Nokie Edwards of the Ventures took his telecaster to Luthier Semie Moseley to have it shaved and needed a loaner for an upcoming gig. Semie loaned Nokie his famous Mosrite which later became the bands iconic guitar being the first guitar to be made specifically for a band - which became the Ventures Model. The group later worked a deal where Semie produced the guitars and the band handled marketing and sales. At one point Semie thought that the symbiotic relationship was no longer necessary and broke off the arrangement. The Ventures went back to Fender which by now featured Gerry McGee as lead guitarist and the return of the Srtat and Jazzmaaster guitars.
Rick Nielsel's 5-NECK guitar
DrumWild It’s on another video
do one about bass guitars please thanks
You should do a vid of just famous basses. Or famous things people were known for, i.e. Freddie Mercury’s strange dancing with the mic stand
Duane Allman's 1959 Les Paul. Roy Buchanan & Danny Gatton... both had a 1953 Telecaster. Roy sold one to Danny Gatton and Danny Gatton sold it to Mike Stern. Mike Stern was held at gun point and it was taken from him.
I know I’m a bit late to this but even though the guitar I suggest for the next video in this series isn’t as old as the other ones mentioned or as legendary I suggest you talk about James Hetfields explorer from the garage days. It’s really interesting and is a great representation of Metallica history.
I've seen Clapton use a very colourful guitar in Cream full of psychedelic designs.. any story behind it..? Would also like to hear more about Vai's triple neck, McLaughlin's double neck, Andy McKee's harp guitar..
Dweezil's Strat is the holy grail piece. It was touched by many Gods. Not just one.
How about Cliff Burtons Rickenbacker bass?
Today is my birthday thanks for the great video
Happy birthday!
samuraiguitarist thanks so much!!!!!
For the next video you absolutely have to cover Angus Young's first SG. Used on High Voltage, T.N.T, Dirty Deeds, Let There Be Rock, Powerage and Back in Black. That guitar has probably been through more change than any other on the planet. Some would argue that it's not even the same guitar anymore. The only thing original is the fretboard. It's kind of like The Ship of Theseus paradox, at what point is it no longer the same guitar? He still tours with that guitar to this day as his #1. It's safe to say that instrument means a lot to him
Or theres the Highway To Hell guitar, which is actually a factory reject or "B-Stock" guitar, which is ironic given the fact that one of Rock 'n' Roll's greatest albums was recorded with it
I don't actually know if the stories are good or not but I'd like to hear about one of the Blue Öyster Cult guitars, either Buck's headless Steinberger or Bloom's BÖC-symbol-shaped axe.
Great video, can do find the story behind alan collins' explorer, kirk hammets mummy guitar or a slash guitar?
The brown burst Les Paul Slash got cheap because it was B stock that they are now selling a copy of for $250k?
I think Stevie Ray Vaughan's guitar was the start of the Relic craze. Everybody wanted a guitar that look like that but they didn't want to wait 30 years.
Actually, that credit goes to Keith Richards or the stones. He was going out on tour and asked the Fender custom shop to build him a replica of his Telecaster as he did think it would last another tour. The custom shop took the measurements from his old guitar an he was leaving, he asked them "Could you nick it up a bit" He didn't want his fans to think he was playing anew guitar,it might ruin his image and all.
Stevie Ray Vaughan's guitar was way before the custom shop.
Stevie Ray Vaughan's guitar is iconic. I never heard of Keith Richards Custom Shop guitar. LOL
@@guitarocd9984 Who said anything about a Keith Richards model? HE HAD THE FENDER CUSTOM SHOP BUILD HIM A GUITAR FOR HIS PERSONAL USE!!!
Other artist saw the job the FENDER custom shop did for Richards and they started to ask the FENDER custom shop to do this for them as well. Fender builds guitar for Artist all the time. As it became a thing, they started to offer ones to the public as relic's.
Peter Framptons Les Paul Custom Black Beauty. Lost in a plane crash, but recently found and returned to Peter.
Awesome vids 2 thumbs up
Did you shave
Dat Guitarist no, I didn't.
I think the SRV strat is definitely interesting enough to warrant a place in this list
You've mentioned liking Pat Metheny, I feel like that 28 [edit: 42!] or whatever stringed Pikasso he has would fit right in here.
Digging the stache
Do a sensei series on easy modifications you can do to your guitar
I wish I could find out more about buckethead's KFC V.
Congratulations you are the only person to notice in a month !
Would have loved if you have talked about Malcolm Young's "The Beast" Gretsch Jet Firebird
You should do one for some UA-camrs.
Tyler Larson's green PRS SC245 "Baby"
Your Butterscotch tele
The Captain's Cap10 Strat
Danish Pete's purple tele
etc.
SRV acquired that guitar from Heart of Texas music. I’m not quite sure he bought it, although I know Ray the owner did do consignment, they never sold used instruments. Mix match body and neck dates isn’t all that big of a deal, and it likely came from the factory that way.
Malcolm Youngs Gretsch "The Beast" would be great! :)
*BRIAN SETZER'S ORANGE 6120*
its THE BEST GUITAR EVAR!
Shoutout to Pat Metheny's Picasso guitar
Randy Rhodes was with quiet riot before Ozzy....
I think he meant when the guitar was made because Randy is most famous for being with Ozzy but at one point (when the guitar was made) he was a session musician
Yeah, but Randy Rhoads wasn't.
I find a common theme of these guitars is that the go missing for period time, do you think you do a vid about missing guitars that have yet to have been found
Kurt Cobain? Rivers Cuomo?
I saw Randy Rhodes play that polka dots guitar. At my first concert in sa tx.
make more of these
I’d love to see Kirk Hammett’s first Strat or his White Zombie guitar!!
Don't forget his Frenkenstien's monster guitar. Was that a bolt on neck?
(25 years later I get to recycle that one)
The story behind SRV's "first wife" is depicted in his classic 'Cold Shot' video.
Can you talk about Eric Clapton's "Fool" guitar? It has a very interesting history.
I've watched all the vids so please excuse me if I missed it - Gilmour's black Strat.
