    My wife gave Jimi’s dad a Kleenex at the opening of The EMP Museum in Seattle. About that time I bought a Mexican Strat strung left handed but nobody had changed the strap buttons. I paid $125 for the Strat and had it changed back to right handed. I gave it to her and always thought it must be a gift for her from Jimi for being nice to his dad. I moved to Seattle and met all the members of the Hendrix family. Leon Hendrix liked my dog.

      Just imagine if he had blowed his nose on it before he gave it to him lol ' would have made a good story.
      If he'd gave it back to him would have made a better story. You could have sold it and bought her an American strat.

    I saw an article in a mid 90's Guitar magazine about the Flying V. They said it had been found at a garage sale bought for 5 pounds because of it's bad condition. The new owner noticed the original paintwork under the black whilst cleaning it & recognised what he'd got & had it professionally restored. I wish I had kept the mag now. It had some full page pic's of before & after.

    • @groundguitar
      @groundguitar  11 місяців тому +5

      Hmm, was it under the black, or under the pickguard? I've read that there was remains of the original paint underneath the pickguard - the paint the Jimi used to decorate the guitar. Let me know if you find that interview somewhere.

    • @71tbomb
      @71tbomb 11 місяців тому +2

      @@groundguitar The mag would've Guitar Player or similar in the mid 90's as I said but it would be an Australian edition as I'm an Aussie. From what I remember he found the original artwork under the black paint. It was pretty rough and just started chipping off as he was cleaning it.Whoever this guy was , he knew enough to know what he got. That's the best I can tell you for now. I hope you track down the article. I'll see what I can find too. Good Luck. I hope this helps. Cheers.

    The family should loan the black strat to the museum that has his white. It would still be owned by them, but it would also be able to be enjoyed by the world. It would also likely be the safest in that museum since they know how best to store and protect historical artifacts.

    • @groundguitar

      Actually agree on that one. People should be able to see the guitar somewhere safe in a museum, kind of weird to just lock it up in a vault. But many people do this, even Kurt Cobain's guitar are locked up in an underground vault somewhere...

Also on the 1st album look into the date which he first got the fuzzface pedal because he recorded foxy lady, purple haze, Fire using the mosrite fuzzrite pedal because hendrix didn't get the fuzz face pedal until AFTER the recording dates of those songs.

    Hey Dan, great video. A video of Jimi's more obscure guitars would be very informative. The old Ibanez, the Duo-Sonics, Jazzmasters, 1955 Les Paul Custom, mid 50s Les Paul Special, the Bartell, Bigsby and Ice Mettalic Blue Strat, the Hawaii '69 Strat, the 3rd Flying V and the Sunburst Strat seen unused in Berlin 9/4/70 and the 10/8/67 thru 1/4/68 modded Strat would be eye openers to a lot of fans. Great job! Jimi played "Black Beauty" the whole night I saw him in Miami 1970.

    I know David Gilmour of Pink Floyd used one of Jimi's guitar straps and Seymour Duncan had something very special from Jimi as well as he designed pickups for him. However historical value or not. Late 60s strats had 3 way blades up until around 1977 so that's one huge reason people would not like them. In fact Jimi took the springs out of his blade switches.

      @@groundguitar Uli is probably one of the most forthright and honest of people around .....the guy is honest to a fault. He has had the privelage of having access to the black strat since first meeting Monika (1976) all the way up to her earthly departure (1996) and was surely overwhelmed like any of us would be having that guitar in our hands. Like in this video, you can plainly see him photographed with it. The strings are still reversed ( like all pics of it that are available). It is probably one ( if not the only) Hendrix guitar to STILL have the strings that he actually played.
      Uli would never take something like that guitar from the family of Monika, I'm sure he has spoken the truth as to it's whereabouts.

And his other early 60’s strats from when he was still in London prior to Monterey. Some odd strats can be seen in old London pics leaning against amps one particular the white tort guard strat and another early 60’s strat that was black just like his black Monterey strat but an earlier model 60-63. Nobody ever talks about them mystery “background” strats.

    • @777Lateralus

      It’s not like it is today, signature models weren’t a thing, and it was just easier for him to find a right handed model and flip it then to custom order something that would take months to get. Don’t forget he was in England for a chunk of his career where American guitars were hard to come by. Clapton bought him a leftie but unfortunately jimi died before receiving it. You have to remember he was only in the spotlight for a couple years

    What about the Tele he used for recording some of his songs after he broke his strat by hitting it into a short ceiling? At least that's what Roger Mayer said. Also Jimi had played Jazzmasters a lot while he was coming up playing for Little Richard & others. I also remember hearing that when he played Red House that he loved to use his Les Paul or 1 of his Les Paul's. Roger Mayer has stated that Jimi used to go thru guitars like crazy & that he Roger was the 1 working on all of Jimi's guitars. He stated that he would wire all of his guitars a certain way. I can't remember what all he stated that he would regularly rewire all of Jimi's guitars. Since he was doing all of Jimi's effects, it would make since that he would do things to help the guitar work better with the effects.

    Jimi smoked cigars? (Did you mean cigarettes? )
    I thought "are you experienced" was recorded at Olympia with Eddie Kramer...
    Also - It appears that there were 2 Flying V's then- one righty and one lefty.
    I saw the refinished one at the Play it Loud exhibit in NYC.
    Question - before he passed, Jimi was supposed to have met up with Eric Clapton at a Sly and the Family Stone concert, but they did not connect. Eric had a LEFTY Strat to give him, but it did not happen that evening. Jimi passed away very shortly thereafter and Eric did not have a chance to give it to Jimi. I always wondered if anyone ever asked Eric what he did with that Strat?
    No comment on the Monterey Strats? I mean that is when he blew up in the U.S. with the experience!
    If it were ever possible, I would want the black strat he played at Monterey.
    Lastly - the Black Strat has become so iconic because of Eric and Jimi. Much like the brown burst strat is due to Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and Eric ("Brownie") when he was with the Dominoes. Peace and love to all!

      @groundguitar  11 місяців тому

      Yes, cigarettes, my bad.
      "Are You Experienced" was recorded across multiple locations as far as I know. This website has a pretty accurate timeline of what was recorded where - hendrix.guide.pagesperso-orange.fr/timeline.htm
      Decided to skip Monterey Strat as it would be just Stratocaster across the board.
      Yes, two Flying Vs, the other one was left-handed and custom-made for Jimi. Btw, there is even a third Flying V finished in tobacco sunburst which he used briefly in 1969.
      Agree, and I'd say David Gilmour should be mentioned too.
      Cheers.
