My wife gave Jimi’s dad a Kleenex at the opening of The EMP Museum in Seattle. About that time I bought a Mexican Strat strung left handed but nobody had changed the strap buttons. I paid $125 for the Strat and had it changed back to right handed. I gave it to her and always thought it must be a gift for her from Jimi for being nice to his dad. I moved to Seattle and met all the members of the Hendrix family. Leon Hendrix liked my dog.

Just imagine if he had blowed his nose on it before he gave it to him lol ' would have made a good story.
If he'd gave it back to him would have made a better story. You could have sold it and bought her an American strat.

I saw an article in a mid 90's Guitar magazine about the Flying V. They said it had been found at a garage sale bought for 5 pounds because of it's bad condition. The new owner noticed the original paintwork under the black whilst cleaning it & recognised what he'd got & had it professionally restored. I wish I had kept the mag now. It had some full page pic's of before & after.

    • @groundguitar

Hmm, was it under the black, or under the pickguard? I've read that there was remains of the original paint underneath the pickguard - the paint the Jimi used to decorate the guitar. Let me know if you find that interview somewhere.

@@groundguitar The mag would've Guitar Player or similar in the mid 90's as I said but it would be an Australian edition as I'm an Aussie. From what I remember he found the original artwork under the black paint. It was pretty rough and just started chipping off as he was cleaning it.Whoever this guy was , he knew enough to know what he got. That's the best I can tell you for now. I hope you track down the article. I'll see what I can find too. Good Luck. I hope this helps. Cheers.

GROUNDGUITAR, The 64 linda strat used Black Bobbin strat pickups which are suppose to have this Hendrix Bell tone sound he got on the clean tones for the 1st album. Also on the 1st album look into the date which he first got the fuzzface pedal because he recorded foxy lady, purple haze, Fire using the mosrite fuzzrite pedal because hendrix didn't get the fuzz face pedal until AFTER the recording dates of those songs.

The family should loan the black strat to the museum that has his white. It would still be owned by them, but it would also be able to be enjoyed by the world. It would also likely be the safest in that museum since they know how best to store and protect historical artifacts.

Hey Dan, great video. A video of Jimi's more obscure guitars would be very informative. The old Ibanez, the Duo-Sonics, Jazzmasters, 1955 Les Paul Custom, mid 50s Les Paul Special, the Bartell, Bigsby and Ice Mettalic Blue Strat, the Hawaii '69 Strat, the 3rd Flying V and the Sunburst Strat seen unused in Berlin 9/4/70 and the 10/8/67 thru 1/4/68 modded Strat would be eye openers to a lot of fans. @@groundguitar Uli is probably one of the most forthright and honest of people around .....the guy is honest to a fault. He has had the privelage of having access to the black strat since first meeting Monika (1976) all the way up to her earthly departure (1996) and was surely overwhelmed like any of us would be having that guitar in our hands. Like in this video, you can plainly see him photographed with it. The strings are still reversed ( like all pics of it that are available). It is probably one ( if not the only) Hendrix guitar to STILL have the strings that he actually played.

And his other early 60’s strats from when he was still in London prior to Monterey. Some odd strats can be seen in old London pics leaning against amps one particular the white tort guard strat and another early 60’s strat that was black just like his black Monterey strat but an earlier model 60-63. Back in "68.I felt All the frenetic action on stage was over getting the Strat off Jimi and sure enough, the '54 Black Beauty on him. He only used it for that one tune and then it was back in the back.
Story went that he didn't consider himself a blues player And Red House was the only strictly original blues song He'd ever written. And his ' 54 LP was perfect for this tune. It’s not like it is today, signature models weren’t a thing, and it was just easier for him to find a right handed model and flip it then to custom order something that would take months to get. Don’t forget he was in England for a chunk of his career where American guitars were hard to come by. Clapton bought him a leftie but unfortunately jimi died before receiving it. I also remember hearing that when he played Red House that he loved to use his Les Paul or 1 of his Les Paul's. Roger Mayer has stated that Jimi used to go thru guitars like crazy & that he Roger was the 1 working on all of Jimi's guitars. He stated that he would wire all of his guitars a certain way.
