Ridiculously good musicianship. Still makes the hairs on my neck stand up after 40-odd years. And they still sound fantastic today.
¿Ridículamente? o ¿Magistralmente?

Freaking unbelievable. There are moments on this song, especially the whole ending, that literally sends me soaring. Thank you FOCUS!!!
Thank you. Happy to have been part of what you enjoyed so much.
@@colinallen6330 Colin! Your drum work is perfect!!! Thank you for replying to me. It's a thrill. Cheers brother!
Back atcha, Be well .
RIP bassist Bert Ruiter (d. 03.24.22 aged 75).
Only geniuses can write this. I've listened to this over a hundred times and I still don't believe how 2 human beings were able to come up with this piece of art. I'm a classical music fanatic, but Hamburger Concerto is up there in heaven with the stars and the moon.
More Mendelssohn You are not the only one! I bougt my fitst LP from Focus: 40 years ago. But after Sylvia and Hocus Pocus is Hamburger Concerto one of theiir best compositions. I love it too.
Yeah it is. It's heaven on Earth for sure.
@@yuredoom Yes I can see the influences clearly. Thank you.
Keep your space suit handy, at all times. Glad you like the album.
100% amazing
A masterpiece .... such an overlooked album by Focus.... it hardly ever gets mentioned....
And that's sad for the fans of rock with a special style. Now we have gothic-rock with Within Temptation, Epica and Nightwish. With some special sound for Myrath (Tunesy) or Orphaned Land (Israel).
I think it's their best!
👍Thank you.
Jan Akkerman , what a beast , an equal on guitar to Page , Beck , Hendrix , etc .
Howe
But like those you mentioned, behind John Mclaughlin, Scott Henderson, Alan Holdsworth, Mike Stern, Al di Meola, Frank Gambale and many other Jazz Guitarists. Even though he's very good and has got a superb technique. But as a guitarist it's easy to figure out who's really good and who's only good in the eyes of non musicians. Hell, a professional saxophone player I know and used to play with has got the same oppinion as me. Even though we couldn't use him on the guitar in our hobby Jazz Fusion Band.
But Akkerman surely was/is a master of "sweep picking". But I would never go to a concert with the "guitarists" you mentioned. They have to be far better than me to be interesting. But your picks are mediocre to an educated guitarist. Only non guitarists/non musicians are impressed by them even though they aught to know what I just wrote is true.
Even Walter Trout is at least on the same level, probably better, than your picks.

I, as a teenager and before playing seriously, used to loose my jaw when listening to Focus and thereby Jan Akkerman. It changed when I started studying guitar in depth.
But his Lut playing is cool and shows he's got pretty much musical talent.
Not as Julian Bream or john Williams. But a great talent he surely is.
Have you ever heard Scott Henderson, Alan Holdsworth or any of the others I mentioned?
We were so lucky to grow up in the 60s and 70s with bands like this. So what they lifted classical music and incorporated it into their compositions. Still light years ahead in talent to most of the crap that calls itself music nowadays.
In my book, this never gets old. They are all such great musicians. I love the way
Colin strikes the drums.
None better!
we over are still proud to have them here in the Netherlands, stunning having great times, Yep dudes******
Thank you - strike is such a nice way of describing what we drummers do. I enjoyed my time with Focus. Pleasing so many enjoyed what l brought to the group.

Unforgetable bands: Focus, Gentle Giant, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd and a few others. Good times that don't return. Does today exist something like those bands? I don't think so. Hamburguer Concerto is a fantastic piece! Prog rock of the best quality.
This is the ultimative masterpiece of Focus!
Triple stack Leslie behind Jan, just AWESOME
Fabulous musicians. Still enjoying their craftsmanship after 50 years 🎸🎹
I heard this for the first time. Born in 2005 this music was out of reach for me. It's beautiful. Unbelievable, one track 17 minutes, hard to imagine now. I liked the guitarplayer especially, so talented.
His name is Jan Akkerman

Yeah the way he bends in those microtones. And only one pedal it looks like? Taped to the floor. All in his fingers.
From Tokyo. I remember buying a Focus video for $ 40 because I wanted to see it. We Japanese are now in an era where focus images can be viewed for free. thank you.
God bless the times when music was at its peak. Like 50 years ago. But it is timeless and will be loved for etermity.
Beautiful comment. How true.
I saw Focus at the Rainbow, Finsbury Park in the mid seventies, I had no idea what I was going to see. Suffice to say over 40 years later I am still listening to them, an exceptionally talented group, up there with the best (I saw most if not all of them From Taffic, Camel, Caravan, SAHB, The Who, Bowie, Pink Floyd, Genesis, Armando Anthony "Chick" Corea, to an endless list of glory. Nostalgia does no one any good, yet how I long for and miss those days).
Happy 72nd Birthday to Sir Thijs Van Leer xx
NICE to see this Done LIVE!!!
A great time is putting on your headphones, close your eyes, and listen to Hamburger Concerto 👍
This is still one my all time favourite albums. I remember the first time I heard this track. The first side of the LP had finished and I was already blown away. When I flipped it to side 2, I heard suddenly, "Variations on a Theme by Haydn", by Johannes Brahms coming out of the speakers. Good grief, I thought, what's happening? Wow, this is brilliant! The second side didn't let me down, it got progressively better and better. The whole album is simply sublime. For connoisseurs of fine rock music, the Hamburger Concerto is an absolute must have album.
It's one of my favoriutes too. Do you have the album Focus 3?
@@jarijn60 Yes I have it. It's one of my favourite albums.
Totally.
''For connoisseurs of fine rock music, the Hamburger Concerto is an absolute must have album''. YES, INDEED - MY BEST THOUGHTS FROM ROMANIA, GELU BATIR, DEC 2022
This album seems to just get more and more appreciated. It seemed so many were horrified when l joined the band - they seemed to forget l was chosen by three of their heroes - slight lack of faith in their good taste. Well it all seemed to work out fine, l think. Glad you still enjoy what we did together.
All through the 70s I listened to FOCUS albums deep into the night. Because they're European they got little notice in North America, but their music was intoxicating, textured, complicated, and deliscious. THIJS AND JAN were geniuses
Akkermann was a genius!!! They came to Brazil and I didn't even knew it. I'm 61 and I'm done, man. Those guys were great musicians. Jan Akkerman was a jazz man.
Sergio M. e Albuquerque, Akkerman still lives and still makes music. He's not dead.
@@wijk89 I had luck in january 2020: live in Rotterdam, Holland! One of the best gitar-players of the whole world!
Prog Rock!! This is what Punk swept aside in the mid 70s - a pity, it was great then and still is, and no one did it better than Focus.
Punk was just shit compared to this,
Tony punk was low-effort hard rock and Chuck Berry revisionism. The interesting and truly subversive stuff was bands like Wire, Magazine, This Heat etc who were prog bands by any other name.
Punk was a quick antedote excuse to mainstream right wing mentalities. No one will look back at the Sex Pistols and comment how great they were. They were basically Take That with safety pins and snarls.
I happen to like punk a lot (Sex Pistols, Buzzcocks, Black Flag, Dead Kennedies) but I also really like Focus and other great prog rock bands of the late 60s - mid 70s. There's some really good footage of more recent incarnations of Focus with Thijs van Leer still showing his astonishing chops.
@@Meddledi save only Ramones ( if it's Punk) and Dead Kennedys
i was in the car one evening in 1974 driving to see a friend when this Album was introduced on the radio. i was so captured that i stayed in the car outside his house until the whole album was over. needless to say i was late to the gathering and the very next day i went to the record shop to buy it. still ranks as my favourite Focus album and one of my top 5 of all times!
Salute from Brazil - FOCUS - 50 YEARS -The Best Progressive Rock - FANTASTIC!
The HC Tour 1975 live bootleg in Japan named "Sylvia" is Pierre on drums - I left the band early '75.
Colin Allen wow is that really you ? Your debut was on the Hamburger Concerto ?
I think both of you are great drummers.
I saw Focus back in 74 in Newcastle .. i presume you were on the drum stool for that gig
Colin Allen ahh Colin what a great drummer saw him a few times with Maggie Bell along with Guy Evans and Geoff Dugmore the best drummers in the UK
Great drummer, beautiful drums
This piece is one of the great moments in prog rock and ranks with the best of Hendrix. Akkerman was the best living guitarist at this time.
Stumbled on this LP in an antique store last week. $1. Near perfect vinyl. VG cover. Sometimes it pays off looking through the crap.
Hamburger wouldn't have sounded the same without Colin. He had been around the block before this and was quality jazz drummer before. Just check out his bio to see what a complete musician he was.
Thank you kindly, you are the first person perceptive enough to make that statement. It wouldn't have been the same with anyone else, perhaps similar at best. You are right, l'd had tenyears
@@colinallen6330 cheers Colin, I hope you're well and still beating that drum. I also witnessed your drum prowess with Maggie Bell and her entourage. 😉
I sure miss all those days in the 70's when there was so much invention going on within the business. It wasn't just about the singer or the song, it was about the band as a whole and their excellent musicians.

Ouvir essa sublime peça progressiva dessa banda holandesa, sempre me deixará emocionado. Uma época maravilhosa e fértil da música.
So true what the comment below states... this is genious. Van Leer is so classically trained with vocal, woodwind, and multiple keyboard talent and creativity beyond belief. Jan Ackerman is a story all by himself.... up there with Alan Holdsworth. What stunningly perfect combination jazz, classical, and fusion leads he comes up with. I am partial to the studio recorded version of this piece and have memorized (in my head only!) every note, chord, keyboard sound, Leslie acceleration, vocal, and drum part (excellent by the way) because Ive listened to it so much and never stopped liking it. I was fortunate to see Focus in 1973 at Winterland in SF. There has never been a band quite like them, before or since. This piece is eternal in my opinion, and continues to produce endorphine levels that would require triplicate receipts if it were a controlled substance cannl
*AWESOME !!!!*
Polish rock band "SBB" (Silesian Blues Band) just played the same kind of music at the end of 60-'s through 70's & 80's !!!!!*
There's music then there's this....
This piece stands the test of time exceptionally well. Colin and Bert together are an outstanding rythm section. Thijs and Jan are melodic beasts. Everybody sensitive and unpretentious, beautiful fitting. Very sad this line up did not last for a couple of albums.
Yep, in Focus we just played. No set lists - no count ins, what's you see is what you get. Thank you for your appreciation. Rock on.
Imho, this piece is among top ten best prog-rock songs of all times! And this live performance was superb!!!
Absolutely fantastic - even with the odd bum note, just incredible playing and power by the band at their peak and the world’s greatest guitarist who for some reason never features in the all too predictable ‘best 100’ lists.
no top 100 because he was not english-american end or he did not have the rock star/ guitar hero attitude. that's it
Progressive Rock at its finest.
Masterpiece of an album.
impresionante!!! Siempre disfruté a Focus, tremendo grupo

absolutely the best of Jan Akkerman playing 😎
The original Dutch Masters.
Was there a better group of 4 musicians in any band? Thanks fir the upload. A Masterpiece played by musical genius’s.
So sad they are overlooked by so many today.
Why this band isn't mentioned among the great prog bands like Yes and ELP is a mystery to me. Great musicianship, arrangements and just a tight band. These songs are timeless even after the bands are gone.
This is gold for me. First time ive seem in vídeo
Akkerman at his best. great upload thank you.
hmmm I wouldn't say at his best but definitely his best performance of this masterpiece.
Onverslijtbaar prachtig!!!
Focus and free are by far the most tight bands I've heard. Not in the music sense but in the sense of being one as a Band.
Another hugely underappreciated band!
real music, full of melodic surprises!
Viva a Holanda!. Viva o Focus!!.
My favorite epic classic song ever!
Astonishing.
The one and only kind of music ever before and after.
Great to SEE this finally. Had the vinyl years ago. Somewhere between John Lord's Concerto For Group and Orchestra and Pink Floy's Atom Heart Mother. And I see from another post that Focus is touring again. More power to them! Thanks guys!
absolute genius
Seen the band twice in Melb Australia never will be forgotten.
Absolutely loved this album. Jan standing by a stack of THREE Leslies here!
Amazing end!!!
I went to many Focus concerts in the 70s. Just a great collection of musicians. I notice Thijs has a M400 Mellotron in his keyboard rig…nice.
A masterpiece I can listen to hundreds and hundreds of times and never once get bored. But this is far from the slickest performance of it. Thanks for the upload anyway!
Jans a genius, never in the so called top ten , but blows them away 🎶
You know he's a genius, so do many others. He is revered all over the world - forget the polls. He will go down in history as one of the great rock guitarists.
One of Akkerman's Leslie speakers seems to be cone cracking and distorting a whole lot. But that gives a peculiar flavour to the whole atmosphere!! I love the band and their music, thanks a lot for the upload!
This is a fantastic band and a great piece of music. I love it. What I despise about UA-cam is, for example, after thirteen minutes into this video there was a advert video interruption. VERY annoying! And of all things the advert was for hamburgers from a major fast food chain. How ironic.

Very GREAT! This is the best live performance I've seen so far of Hamburger Concerto! I do always miss Thijs' vocal fun at the beginning and I wish he would sing that cool minimoog solo melody like it was on the album. But maybe these live recording were done before they recorded the album?
