I once had a roommate who was into prog rock big time but never heard of Focus. I waited until he was good and stoned then played Hamburger Concerto from the beginning. When it came to the vocal break about 5 minutes in I thought I would have to call an ambulance. He was laughing so hard he couldn't breathe. The next day I found him copying the song onto cassette. 80s memories.
Absolutely their masterpiece! This is Focus at the top of their game - and even at their most mediocre, they could run rings around everyone else. Jan and Thijs may have disliked each other, but the music they made transcends this. What a pity they fell out; its everybody's loss.
I played this song on a trip with my significant other to San Diego. When Thijs did his first vocal break, she turned to me and asked, "What the fuck are we listening to?" Exactly the reaction I was looking for!
I once played it to a couple who were travelling in my car. By the end the guy was snoring. I said I never heard that reaction to HC before. He said he had absolutely loved it - the detail and virtuosity had switched off every irritation in his mind and body so that he felt entirely relaxed!
it's just unbelievable. I've been listening to this over and over. And to think, I might not have ever discovered this musical wonder if it wasn't for the internet...
Had this album during a bad period in my life and denied it for decades. Now, the sheer musical quality surpassed everything and listening to such a masterpiece as it was fresh. Guess I got over anything else :D
Perfect blend of two totally different music traditions, baroque and popular rock jazz music!!! you can't get a piece of music more godly than this! (well Bach obviously rocks).
@@meowzer999 Back in the day when I first got the Moving Waves album and started listening to Eruption I wasn't even sure what that was, sounded like a cross between a guitar, trumpet, and violin! I think he used a volume pedal in later years but in the early days at least he just manipulated a pickup volume knob on the guitar with his pinky finger.
It was a shame so very few people attended FOCUS' show in Santiago two weeks ago. Ironically, it seemed to me to be the best of the 3 times I've seen them live and Thijs Van Leer is more energetic and charismatic than ever. Pierre Van der Linden on the drums made the date a must. Great band and show to be remembered and perhaps we could see them again in Chile some time soon with a good promotion campaign etc. The band that created Hamburger Concerto deserves the best, don't they? Van Leer was happy he had the audience he had here this time and those of us who were there thanked him back. Thanks for sharing this inmortal piece from the best days of prog-rock, for me, the days of full discovery, mid 70's.
1976.. the High School pole vaulters listening to this as we ran as fast as we could 80 m with a 5 m chunk of fiberglass. To an abrupt stop followed by a brief flight. Progressive rock... listen to the end.
During the opening section of the "Hamburger Concerto", Focus makes several quotations (first time at 2:22) from a German Lied - possibly also by Johannes Brahms or Franz Schubert. I'm not quite sure which. I only remember having listened to that song on one of my many CD's some years, saying to myself: "Hey?! That's one of the themes used in "Hamburger Concerto". :-)
@@actionsub Indeed, it is just scatting. It isn't Dutch, that's for sure (I'm Dutch). The poem that Thijs van Leer sings between 15:32 - 16:48 is in Dutch: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/O_Kerstnacht,_schoner_dan_de_dagen
GRANDISSIMI FOCUS!!!!!! im looking to do a piano/vocal cover of the original Moving Waves Song classical piano over vocals anyone know of sheet music or if the song is a variation of a famous classical song out there?
"Hocus Pocus" a rock parody? You obviously have no idea what you're talking about. Look up a clip of the story behind "Hocus Pocus" where Thijs Van Leer tells how that song came to be. That's one thing about prog rock, it is NEVER meant to be a parody.

I've bought this album in 70's and even today I'm not tired of listening to it! Classic prog stuff!
Same here!
One of the most amazing pieces of music ever recorded, and one of my top favorites from the band.
For someone who has never listened to Focus, this is the best starter album
Groundbreaking, transcendental, spiritually enhancing, addictive, unbelievable, timeless. One of the best pieces of rock music ever recorded.
Originally titled "Tears Of The Mute", but the record company didn't think the title commercial enough so they changed it.
Absolutely their masterpiece! This is Focus at the top of their game - and even at their most mediocre, they could run rings around everyone else. Jan and Thijs may have disliked each other, but the music they made transcends this. What a pity they fell out; its everybody's loss.
I love Eruption off Moving Waves a tiny bit more than the Hamburger, but they are both absolutely stunning pieces of music.
I played this song on a trip with my significant other to San Diego. When Thijs did his first vocal break, she turned to me and asked, "What the fuck are we listening to?" Exactly the reaction I was looking for!

Focus at their peak. Masterpiece!
Why have I not heard this before? This is beautiful!
Right at the end of this piece when Thijs hits the Moog and Jan's Leslied guitar keeps swirling it is absolute musical heaven.
I know the part you are talking about. I still crank it up. I'm listening to this album going on 50 years now.
Thanks - I've wondered for 40 years what this effect was!

I've loved everything by Focus, this is no exception. Grossly under rated. They were brilliant!
Perfect blend of two totally different music traditions, baroque and popular rock jazz music!!! you can't get a piece of music more godly than this! (well Bach obviously rocks).
I bought this album on vinyl in about 1976 or so. I have two copies. I was always afraid of losing one. I HAD TO HAVE IT!
Thanks for posting!
The guitar solo of Jan Akkerman, what a emotion!......
I love the trippy volume-pedal guitarwork he did. It was like dreampop before the term even existed.

The whole album is great as this. Every bit a masterpiece.
The best album Focus ever made.Prog rock masterpiece.
Ditto. awesome piece from four very talented guys. My all time favorite album! Numero uno!

Loooooove this piece. It's my favorite.

Thijs van leer plays more than 12 diferent instruments on this piece alone plus sopranos. Amaizing!
My favorite part is well done.
True. The album liner notes list of all the instruments used on this album goes on and on.
it could be longer ...
when I start to listen to it I do not see the time go ...
Masterpiece!!!

Yes, Pierre Van Der Linden was an excellent drummer. As a young drummer in the '70s, I was in awe of his playing. His drums sounded great too.
@@meowzer999 Great name for a pussy cat, I reckon!.(No offence meant xx)
I especially love the last 10 minutes or so of this song!
10 minutes you hope never end.
The masterpiece of the seventies!
Akkerman
13:02
Great lick/run
The VERY best!!!
De culto, simplemente una obra de arte!! Bravo 👏🏼
Agreed. This piece was epic before the word "epic" became trivialized.
At 18:58 I always and clearly feel that my car needs a more powerful engine. Or replacing the whole thing with a spaceship.
Van Leer voice improvisation are impressive.
Fantástico, sensacional, bravo!!! 👏
I agree with you one hundred percent. It is a masterpiece indeed
This music is the essential of progressive rock.

Since the kid, i still love this part (15:32) and this too (17:39)
Hoy tengo 62 años y me sigue encantado.
Masterpiece !
I love the titles of the movements!

It's called the St Anthony Chorale. You can find some of Thijs' very early interpretations of it as Thus Spoke the Creator.
Or if you mean the guitar coda, that was derived from Life's Been Good while they were touring with Joe Walsh!
Sounds a bit like ELP, too! My first time hearing this, very good!
I don't see it being like ELP. They never had bass and guitar together
Whimsical, spiritual, inspiring. Like "Close To The Edge" in vision. MY CD is buried somewhere, thanks for posting.
YES! You're right!
Timothy Haering Agreed
I love the sound of the organ on this album.
16:49 - 19:32 is just pure magic....
It's as epic as it gets
Me too, it's a masterpiece.
one of the lesser known prog rock classics
great album! great band!
I remember the first time I heard this album. Late at night in Cali
A classic... timeless
Sorry there... I found all the other great music they have done. Thank you focus!
Hocus pocus !!!!!
Ohhh , those days , those memories
This is the most amaizing progressive piece
When Thjis sings "Well Done" that brings to the closing section "One for the road" i really can see windmills in the distance.
Neither McDonald's nor Wendy's can improve on this burger.
My SECOND ALBUM OF ALL THE TIMES
My favorite part of this master piece is Van Leer playing that dark hammond organ along with the voice improv. I laugh so hard at 6:02 hahaha

Guitar and organ both!
Took my breath for 10 minutes
Original title: Tears Of The Mute.
Changed by the record company for not being commercial enough.
I laugh my head off around 5'24" with the mad vocals. Best part imo. Wonder if he knows how mad he sounds.
Oh, he knows! XD
It is similar in structure and duration to Yes' rock concerto, "CLose to The Edge."
Sublime.
Up until about 5 years ago I only knew this band for the moving waves album with hocus pocus then I stumbled on all

The start of "Hamburger Concerto" is "St. Anthoni Chorale"
Correct but this is not Focus' first rendition of it.
It started out as a short piece called 'Spoke The Lord Creator'.
It leaves you floating 20 cm over the floor

Recognizing that their big hit, "Hocus Pocus," was a rock parody, I wonder if this was intended as a parody.

You say that, one of the greatest prog albums of all time is a parody of the genre. Thick As A Brick by Jethro Tull.
18:59 !!

Focus came at a time when music was in a prostitute Era..disco and such.they lent some sanity to music. Saved my life.
