Rare video of the outstanding guitarist.
Record of 14.10.1980 from the "Pump Kiel". He plays lute / double neck guitar / 6 string and more ..............
Since from my video-fundus and nearly 40 years old the quality is not so special.
Nevertheless, have fun watching and listening.
He is my favorite guitarist. Thank you for sharing. From Brooklyn, NY
Jan Akkerman introduced me to the music of John Dowland and from there lute music as a whole.
It's crazy how this guy could've out-played just about any guitarist who is held in high regard here in the US but we've never heard of him...he probably didn't fit into any specific genre and therefore was impossible to market in the states...great video - I've been playing guitar for 30 years and his musicianship makes me feel like a beginner... I guess it helps to be born a virtuoso 🔥
Hello Robert.
Jan Akkerman is really a good and sensitive guitarist.
Unfortunately he and his former band "Focus" were only known in Europe apart from the Netherlands and the songs were played here on the radio. Best wishes; I've also been playing the guitar for years, I've never learned it and I orient myself to my heroes such as
Janne Schaffer / Santana / Jan Akkerman etc.
Oh we've heard of him since the early 70's Focus was all over the place
@@Bothsidesrecords1 Actually, Focus had their greatest success in the US and drew their largest audiences there.
We had a children’s show on television in New Zealand when I was young, 1970s about, it was called Spot On, the theme song was Blue Boy by Jan Ackerman! I didn’t know until I bought an album of his and it was on it!
Exactly.

One of the best guitarists ever.!!!
Incredibly skilled guitarist! I have several records with Focus, where he plays with Thijs van Leer. They are an incredible band with a completely unique playing style!
Totally unique ....73 ..74 ..76. . Still now, they all play as bleeding hell, so good, they; are around 76 years old . TOP NOTCH. But JAn never , ever plays with Thijs van Leer , cause in Jan's opinion he's a total arrogant mofu. well, sorry.
The thing is..... still now he hates Thijs although they made the best music together.
@@narvul True, when they were together they made some of the most beautiful and exciting music in the world!
Perhaps one , if not the greatest guitar players ever
Is it just me or was/is Jan just in a class of his own? Harmonically streets ahead.
Thanks for posting....a real treat.
To all ! Gladly again, memories come up here
akkerman is totally in a class of his own.
he is in a class of his own
you're right : Jan Akkerman is a one of one kind. Without any other top guitar player overseen. Take a lute.
And then again : on a lute: many very well schooled lute players will see him as special.
WOW ! Just found this by chance. Ever since the days of Focus Jan has been in my top 5. Phenomenal musician.
Do you know his album Passion? One of his best compositios! In the 70's he played in Focus: Hamburger Concerto is a special long number. I suppose you know the numbers Sylvia nad Hocus Pocus.
@@jarijn60 I've been listening to Jan since the 70 s as a kid. Know everything from the 60 s up to the most recent album. Close Beauty. Even his work as a sideman in Forcefield II, Joachim Kuhn and with Fish from Marillion. He turns up in many places.
The most unique guitarist out there.. Amazing performance!
It's a slight shame that at the time he looked a bit like an escaped convict!
Love his style since 1971 - Focus / Hocus Pocus
And before 1971
And BRAINBOX,before FOCUS
Reminds me of the wise words of Ravi Shankar during the concert for Bangladesh "Thank you, if you appreciate the tuning so much, I hope you will enjoy the playing more."
The dutch Allan Holdsworth.
Pat Metheny, Phase Dance minuto 7:45
Great clip! Thanks for sharing, even hear some Pat Metheny licks from 7:46.
Vet dit! Heer en meester op gitaar. Ik hoor zelfs even n Pat Metheny stukje lol.
A lesson in musicality for modern guitarplayers
YES !! Best wishes BSR
I totally agree . Jan is a beautiful musician first and in my mind the best at using a guitar to broadcast his wonderful music . The sound of the lute brings memories of FOCUS back to me
I saw them live in 1972 . I was 12 years old and my friends thought the bay city rollers were good. I had three albums on eight track and a small battery powered player. I didn't know I was listening to the best.
I can highly recommend the album "ELI" witch Jan is quoting a lot here in this video. Probably one of the best kept secrets full amazing songs
Still one of my most played albums which I bought when it first came out!
Issued as "Jan Akkerman & Kaz Lux - Eli" his old vocalist pal from Brainbox
I ABSOLUTELY LOVE ❤️ LOVE ❤️ LOVE ❤️ LOVE UNCLE~MR.JAN AKKERMAN.. HE IS ONE OF MY ALL TIME FAVORITE GUITARIST.. I AM 57 YEAR'S OF AGE.. I STILL FIND HIM FASCINATING..
THANK YOU FOR UPLOADING THIS VIDEO..
Who are the two fuckin' dislikers????
Eric & Jim
Gracias por compartir esta maravilla.
Thank you for putting this on UA-cam. I have been listening to music for many years and I believe Jan has something interesting to say here.
Thank you and we're glad that you like it. Best musical wishes BSR1
Another planet, i came looking for Lute and found this!
As soon as he touches a guitar I get immediate chills. I absolutely love Jan!!
One of the best records of his monstrous skills!
He reminds me of Pat Metheney, which is an extreme compliment, I assure you.
Twenty f…ing minutes… The audience was frozen.
Loved me a mess around with the harmoniser, back in the day, mind... this is jedi level 'messin' though...❤😎
Very good guitar, thanks )
Wow ,this makes me proud as Dutch .
Those classic Jam chords ⚡️⚡️⚡️
I know him since FOCUS from the year 1974 live in Frankfurt. A great guitarist.

@@Bothsidesrecords1 This is a concert in Kiel with Joachim Kühn, do you have these tracks also? They have also write together Santa Barbara, First and Second dance, soundcloud.com/mo-klunder/a-santa-barbara-first-dance .... soundcloud.com/mo-klunder/b-santa-barbara-second-dance
Jan Akkerman:
Harmonies = TOP !
Solos = Hä ???
An informal UK - USA music industry coalition (the media moguls etc.) takes utmost care to - subtly - suppress the greatest musicians originating from other countries. This policy is tailored as to keep many such people "under the radar" so they don't "endanger" big stars of the native English speaking population. Few decades ago, when J. McLaughlin visited former Yugoslavia (he had a good friend living there) he was asked to listen to some local musicians and he was amazed. But, being suggested to support them by helping in organizing their tour(s) through West he just smiled and shook his head and explained how neatly and in a long term (for many years ahead) the venues and media activities are scheduled and the production of the vinyls and CDs is planned ...
What does this statement have to do with this video? Nothing at all !Please do not post any more comments here, otherwise they will be deleted
@@Bothsidesrecords1 Seems like you didn't get the point: I referred to the fact that Jan is almost unknown to the wider audience. Absolutely one of the best guitarists of the Rock-era, yet heavily underestimated, not due to anybody's mistake but quite purposely.
@@DrAgan_tortojed He is not "unknown" and was voted best guitarist of 1974 by UK public. You may never have heard of him but he was huge in his day
@@Bothsidesrecords1 DrAgan_tortojed is 100% right.Akkerman is known only to relatively small audience.Masses are constantly told Clapton/Hendrix are the greatest, but the video shows they are well below Mr Akkerman or Duane Allman [not in the video].
Outstanding!
Jan akkerman forever, amazing. ❤
superb !
Yes, really exceptional and experimentally good
tthe thecnique of the right hand is very complicated, plays in the air
The only way to play a lute...
superb jan
Thank you for sharing! 🙏
Dutch legend!!
I saw him in the Milkyway in Amsterdam same time. He was with a German (not sure) piano player. Never forget that concert.
I think it was Joachim Kühn. Best whishes from BSR
@@Bothsidesrecords1 I remember they both were smoking joints like crazy in the Milkyway/Amsterdam. At that time in Germany was not possible😅😅
Danke, dass war sehr kühl ;)
💗UJan❤
Strangest version of Stairway I ever heard 😊
Absolutely gorgeous, even by Jan's standards.
Loved him since FOCUS III
Blows guys like Clapton May etc away another class 🇬🇧🎼
Akkerman/Duane Allman are in the supreme class.
He does not blow anyone away. This way of “playing” irritates the hell out of me
Lindo demais!!!

Greets BSR
Thanks a million for this, Jan's been my favourite guitarist since 1972 when Focus turned my brain sideways on BBC'S Old Grey Whistle Test. Still great today!👍
