I'll never understand why they were not as popular as King Crimson, Yes, Genesis, Camel etc. Maybe because they were Dutch, I don't know. But they are criminally underrated for sure, that's a fact.
When people talk about the great heroes of guitar, particularly in rock, prog and so forth, the usual subjects are always mentioned, Hendrix, Jimmy Page, Clapton, Rory Gallagher and so forth. Well, great respect to all of them for their achievements, but none of them could play close to Jan Akkerman in any terms. I'd like to see Jimmy Page tackle a lute! Jan can play just about anything, with aplomb, dexterity and a great sense of excitement and melodic content, whether classical, rock or jazz; but not just play, he excels in every genre. Actually, I would love to hear Jan tackle a simple rootsy blues and hear what he'd do with that form.

People just tend to remember the talents that were pushed the most in the public spotlight. Jan had a playing quality about him that always reminded me of Frank Zappa - heck, compare Jan's playing on Hocus Pocus to, say, Peaches En Regalia! But then I get the feeling that Focus in general were always at a disadvantage in a widely English speaking world and the fact that much of their content was instrumental anyway. The general bias towards clever lyrics was never going to work in their favour!

He's a good guitarist allright, but a terrible person. You should see the names he called me on Facebook, simply because I said something good about Thijs van Leer!
