I can vouch for tip #5. I play rhythm guitar on a worship team at my church and I find it very helpful to listen and play along with songs we are going to play on Sunday. Great way to learn the rhythm of a song and even pick up some of the links as well.
Thank you So much! LOVE THIS VIDEO. I am a 67 year young novice guitar player. I am going to share this witb my guitar class of young seniors. YOU ROCK!!!
You’ve genuinely helped me so much, I live in a very small town and there are no in person guitar teachers here. Without your videos I wouldn’t know over half of what I know!!! Thank you Stuart!!! You’re so inspiring!!

i wish this video existed when i was in colledge for guitar, when suddenly everyone around me was just better and i didn't know what to do and yeah, after years of not being able to even touch the guitar because of how terrible I felt about being so bad at it I became a bass player, and now I'm enjoying playing music again
I pretty much made this video for my teenage self. Holding out hope that someone will create a time machine and it will be able to help my younger self out.
I've started playing "Smells Like Teen Spirit" at 17, now I'm almost 42 and my 9 yo son plays it MUCH better than me after just 1 year or less. I'm very proud of him but I'm sooo envy as well. I really love guitar, but the thing is - practice makes permanent (not perfect) if you practice wrong things and have nobody to tell you that. Thanks for people like Stuart who keeps inspiring me, I try not to compare myself with anyone and just enjoy learning and playing
I don’t think people get how relieving it is to hear someone who you look up to and learn from guitar-wise saying something so relating to you that you thought no one else experienced. I know I’m real shitty at guitar but you Stuart make me feel a little less shitty
You are so right unc. My dad just asked me to play anything resembling a tune and I couldn't, I've had my guitar since 27 June. And I saw this video after I cried trying to follow a tutorial on Zombie by the cranberries. I've been learning those chords for the past week.
The reason 90% of people stop playing guitar is not because they don't have "talent", it's because they quit. Promise yourself 3 months, and you'll get over that initial learning curve. Then pick 3 beginner songs to learn for the next 6 months.
I was ridiculed daily for the first 7 years .. you don’t owe the world anything , this is your journey .. if you don’t have anything prepared , politely decline the invitation .. it took me 6 months to learn a C chord , 2 years to learn an F chord & 10 - 15 years to understand the mechanics of a key / mode . You will learn faster than me .
@@ionageman Thank you so much, really. I've just started my journey and I can't just quit because I'm not where I want to be yet, you're right. Tried several times to learn guitar. Then switched to bass because my church band needed a bass player. I really like bass. Went back to learning guitar and its easier because of what I've learned playing bass.
Stuart, you're right 😂 Your depiction of beginner guitar playing was on point. And I feel the same way. I'm only a year in and I can only play one song semi decently and a few odd riffs. Thanks for being so honest about your own struggles.
Hey! I'm mediocre at a bunch of songs. Jumping around and learning a bunch of different songs helps with my mental agility and like you said I just really think it's more fun.
I find if I’m working on a song or lick and not quite getting there, I switch out and work on something else for a few minutes. When I come back, I’ll often play the original one, if not perfectly, at least better - maybe because I stopped thinking about it so hard and just let muscle memory take over.
I have been playing for 3 months and having time to play is enough for me. And being able to enjoy these videos that you make that make me so funny makes me want to play more, no matter how it sounds, thanks stuart
Stuart, you are right! Dude I can so relate to what you are saying! I still struggle to get my chords clean and escape the nasty fret buzz. I can play some basic things but I cannot play as well as I would like. Fortunately for me, I have played drums for many years and thus I understand rhythm well. Small fingers (my hands are the size of a 10 yr old) make many chords difficult to play clean and have all the necessary strings to sound. Especially on bar chords.
I don't even play guitar i play drums but god how i relate so hard to this. Being surrounded by good musicians and not being able to play nearly half of what they can despite playing for three years feels paralyzing. It's the reason i hardly ever practice but this shit that you spread makes me want to practice until my fingers bleed and I start crying. Thank you Stewart i think i may learn guitar now.
I’ve been playing guitar for like a year or two. There are so many times where i just stop learning a song, because it gets frustrating or i can’t get the part how it should sound. Then there are times i’m so unmotivated to play guitar that i don’t touch it for months. What really helps me is my friend. We don’t play often together, but when we do i see how good she plays and i have the want to play as good so i work really hard. I have yet to learn to play an entire song. This video helped me so much to remember that i have to pull through some songs especially when they start to get harder. The only song i can play comfortably is from a game. It’s just tab and everything is pretty easy except for 10-15 seconds in the middle. I always try to play it how it sounds but i can’t get it so i just pick a slightly different rhythm and speed and it sounds like it belongs in the song. I feel like it’s important to realize that speed and rhythm is changeable and still sound right. That really helps me learn notes. Thanks for the tips. All of them are just so basic, in a good way. They’re so easy to forget. Just hearing them all together really helps to remind that it just needs a push or a change in how you learn or play.
I been practicing on my own in privacy of my own home for a year. Last night I went to a friends house with my Squire Stratocaster and Fender Frontman 10g played some chords. It was not only nerve wracking but also an eye opener to what I need to do in the future to get better. That’s if I get better. The struggle goes on…
I want to learn to play, however everyone was telling you what you should be doing with left hand but kept leaving out what you should be doing with your left hand. So thanks for addressing the subject.
Uncle Stuart this video is amazing. I've been playing guitar for a few months now and when I first started I was absolutley terrible, I couldn't even do power chords, and when I would do them my fingers would want to fall off. But it was though you, you and your videos and teaching that I was able to be able to play those power chords, play those songs that I love, and just enjoy myself. By no means am I good, but im having fun. As for other parts of my life it isn't that way, there are a lof of things that I'm not good at, im insecure at, and there are interests that I've been struggling to find motivation for, but this video helps. Its nice and comforting to know that everyone starts and ends up in a similar place, starting out not knowing what to do, and being bad at things. And it is nice to know that other people feel frustrated and sad when stuff isn't going your way even though you pour your heart and soul into something. My life is crazy right now and there is a lot of stuff I need to figure out but this video gives me hope that everything will end up alright. Great video, love you unc.
By far, the most on point guitar tutorial 😂 Everything you described is me. Down to my instructor getting me to learn Seven National Army. I have no plans to play past my garage. No plans to play in a band. It’s strictly for me. Thx for this video bro.
Great advice. When I first got a guitar I learnt the C chord because in school it was all about C….but then bing lazy and thinking all chords would be that difficult I went straight to rhythm and would just slide that shape up and down until I found positions that worked together. That was so much fun I wanted to know other shapes you could do the same with. Eventually I wondered about the chords I was actually playing and learnt the theory I’d got bored of in school.
I played Bass in some garage bands in the 60s/70s and sometimes we were playing crappy and other times decent. But we always had fun no matter the outcome. Playing for fun is the best method for me. I do not think of it as a job in that sense. The past few years I have taken up playing electric guitar as well as still playing my basses. You will have good days and bad, thats just part of it but keep at it and have fun. Also the Jimmy Pages, Jeff Beck, Eric Claptons all had to start somewhere.
Good Stuff Brother! 2 tips I got from better players at the time, decades ago that stuck with me for life and helped me emensely. 1 get the song you wanna play inside your head. Sing to yourself or listen to it untill you can hear it ringing in your skull. 2nd Play along with pros. Pop in you favorite CD and play along. Ill do this over and over untill I can play it. Over time it trains your ear and gets easier to learn songs quicker...
You played come as you are and smells like teen spirit almost 1:1 with how both me and a friend who also just started would play it. Stuart, you are right.
I remember being at school and it seemed like everyone else was amazing at guitar while i sucked, even though I'd been playing for 7 years. I realised I wasn't progressing because the lessons I had were getting me to play songs that I didn't enjoy and stupid scales that teachers kept telling me would somehow make my playing better, so I just wouldn't practice between lessons. I stopped playing for a few years and when I started again I just taught myself songs that I loved and my playing got far better. Sometimes I think people forget people learn guitar to enjoy it and play songs they like, not so that they master all the music theory and have the perfect technique.
As a non french speaker, google translate heard "I'm not chins because it's my birthday." Which wouldn't surprise me in the least if that was exactly what was intended.
I was a real late bloomer on guitar b4 i enjoyed my playing took me 30 years to really actually find myself and I had to let everything go and just play the thing honestly some people are real quick and great early but some come along latter on mainly trying to be something i wasn't was my problem till I found out I have to be me and I listen to the guitar now and singing and playing is a major push towards being better wish I was singing early on I always thought I could not do it but it is easy and completes the whole thing you also have to stick with it and in the end you are able to make it all come together as a whole I can't play heavy heavy metal but I can play most styles and be great at one thing a lot of pkayers are stuck in one style my advice learn the rhythm and lead parts plus's the bass line
For me, when I was learning the very basics, Imitation of life from REM, was a really good fun song to practice my strumming and cord progresion. Also Everybody hurts from REM was my best song to practice picking arpegios. hope this work for any of you too.
Stuart, you're right! Regarding Smells Like Teen Spirit, it was this song that most inspired me to want to learn guitar and I had to come back to it once I had learned some other stuff!
Thanks man! Pep talk at the end hit home. I gig weekly. I have a Violinist that plays with me that has a Doctorate in Music and play for th Symphony as well. Im not that good, yet he still plays with me and our crowd looks forward to my show. I really am not a good technical player, although I've had people call me a shredder....New Sub here
Yup, this is me. I had to accept that I sucked and I just loved to try before I got any better. Two years in at 40, I still suck, but I can play a lot better than I could, and I’m having fun. And my right hand was is the hard part, for sure. That and left hand muting.

Thank you Uncle Stuart, this really helps me since it addresses some things I had problems with
Ive been beatin around on my acoustic for 14 years. I still not even close to being good at it. But I do enjoy it!
👍👍
Youre right stuart
Good Stuff Brother! 2 tips I got from better players at the time, decades ago that stuck with me for life and helped me emensely. 1 get the song you wanna play inside your head. Sing to yourself or listen to it untill you can hear it ringing in your skull. 2nd Play along with pros. Pop in you favorite CD and play along. Ill do this over and over untill I can play it. Over time it trains your ear and gets easier to learn songs quicker...
i find that in moments like that, you need like 1 good perspective change, and out of nowhere your 5x better, and getting better
jokes aside, thanks for this video stuart! i am very aware im geniuenly horrible at guitar, but that doesnt mean ill give up
You played come as you are and smells like teen spirit almost 1:1 with how both me and a friend who also just started would play it. Stuart, you are right.
Stuart, you are right. My Teen Spirit sounded *exactly* like that. Like, I’m confident you were creeping on me - that’s how accurate you are.
Sometimes I think people forget people learn guitar to enjoy it and play songs they like, not so that they master all the music theory and have the perfect technique.
thankyouu stuart we love your mug !!
I'm terrible at guitar but I love your magic tricks and occasional walks through the woods during your videos
We got french stu before gta3🗣🔥 as a french I didint understand a single word fr
Also Everybody hurts from REM was my best song to practice picking arpegios. hope this work for any of you too.
me encanta la honestidad del tio stuart
stuart you’re very right
My first video with this guy and I am hooked. Liked and subscribed. Can’t wait to watch another!
Welcome aboard!!!
This is really helpful! I just started playing guitar after wanting to play for years 😭 it’s been about a week, hoping to get good :)
stuart, thank you.
You are right Stuart
I'm 59, been taking lessons for 3 years and getting better, but not good... everyone makes it look so easy...
You are right! I feel this so hard.. 13 year old me trying to learn Smells like a teen spirit
This guy's manic energy almost gave me a headache but very entertaining and, more importantly, very good advice:-)
I love the 5 minute intro. I needed to hear it. Thank you!
This video was so inspiring. Thank you for all the amazing advice and supportive words. This world needs more teachers like Mr. Stuart.
I loved this video so much! Been struggling! Started playing guitar 🎸 late in life, but I think about it 24/7. I really appreciate the pip talk 😂 It’s what I needed today 😊❤
Always the best. Teacher, tutor, supporter. Thank you for your work, and most of all thanks for your energy and passion
