My grandfather told me he was in the Cuban Army as a officer during the Cuban Missile Crisis. He escaped to Florida by swimming from Cuba. He encountered many sharks and almost died. (He apparently knew Castros brother as a kid) He died recently, and we never knew his rank.

He was hit by a rock, that was flying towards him from a building that a Soviet tank shot, his head got blown off by the impact of the rock.
