I seem to remember Lorin saying that he wasn't related to the people in the house he lived in. His family had been sent away to "repent". That might explain why the folks in the house weren't all that emotional about his decision to leave.

  • @5fingerjack

Your experience was as a man with more agency, Sam. No one was trying to marry you off, and you had marketable skills. So saying "no one is stopping you" may not be as accurate for young women. I'd like to know more about that.
Lorin mentioned having been separated from his entire family. It seems like a lot of people have been separated and made to pay a steep tithe to even hope to be reunited. I'd like to hear more about that, and whether having the extra mothers (father wives) helped the kids bridge the loss of their own mothers (seems like it wouldn't, but?)
Regarding copyright, this would come under fair use & you should contest.

Good point. Plus, the polygamy cults are probably happy to let the boys go, but the girls? No! They need them for breeding with old men, so they are very reluctant to let them go and will pull all kinds of dirty tricks to keep them in the compound.

I loved the show Escaping Polygamy, and I felt for the people trying to leave. From what I could tell, it was a lot harder for the girls to leave then for the boys. On a few episodes they even took girls to a safe house and wouldn't let them have contact with anybody. Is that truly the way of things?

For the girls that grow up FLDS, I think it's like anyone leaving their parents home. If they don't have somewhere to go they're going to struggle. And it's maybe harder for the girls to arrange somewhere to go, because they don't go out to work as much. The parents aren't putting more pressure on the girls to stay faithful to the church than they are the boys. At least it doesn't seem like that to me.

As a man his experience would have been way different than a womans. Some women have been tracked for a year after they escaped in the middle of the night and the God Squad was determined to bring them back. Also some women who escaped but were re-captured have been taken to re-programming houses in the middle of nowhere and were watched by a couple with nailed shut windows and no way to escape again.

I think most of the females look the same mainly in the clothes on the compound. Once they have been out for a little I begin to see a difference it’s just so hard when they dress the same and in some cases cousins with cousins. More people will resemble eachouther as well as when they all look like one uniform person. I don’t think anyone from the outside could tell them apart at first glance. To me this is just a way to further dehumanizing them to take away individual personalities thus keeping ideas to a minimum.

The music is always way over the top but I’m guessing that’s the production teams decision rather than the girls themselves. Everything on TV is so dramatized as if we wouldn’t watch it without that. It does seem like the females in both of the cults they help experience a lot of emotional manipulation that causes them to need a lot more support in leaving. Can’t wait to see more from you guys!

Im sure they might over dramatize the show a bit but I do think it’s important for y’all to acknowledge that there is a lot of psychological trauma that comes with being in a cult like this. Even though it was easy for Sam to leave and luckily he made it out fairly unscathed it’s not easy for many of these people. They are basically choosing their damnation to hell and leaving behind family and friends for a life of unknown, and they know that family will shun them away forever and even for a man that must be hard as well. They will try to guilt you and suck you back in to the religion to use you. It was probably easier for Lorin to stay strong and not get sucked back in if he had people there supporting him. I know Sam has fond memories of how the FLDS used to be but now this religion has become tortuous for these people and they are being torn apart and neglected every day and that’s extremely important for people to know so we can try to help these oppressed people.

(Melissa) Thank you so much for watching! We have heard so many stories about other strict religions that share a lot in common. I personally think that a lot of people are leaving as more historical information is coming out about the church's past. When people learn that things were different than they had been taught their entire lives, it makes them feel betrayed. For me, church history was a deep rabbit hole, and I think it is for many others as well.

And now I live in the Snowflake/Taylor area I know there is an FLDS group here because I see them at the grocery store, but I never knew anything about them. My grandmother was from the Mennonite/Amish community and married out. This is Swiss Anabaptist that split from the Catholic Church in 1523. It is interesting to see the similarities and differences. Mostly the Amish feel it is wrong to be Worldly.

  • @Grace-wf4ix

The "tithing" described in the FLDS organization is not Biblical, proper tithing. God's tithe means one tenth of one's increase (in income, etc.) is to be brought to God through bringing it to His church. This is explained in The Holy Bible, Malachi 3:10. The verse also mentions bringing offerings, which are in addition to the tithe. An offering is whatever amount of money, goods, etc., the believer feels led to give, in whatever place in a church or ministry they feel led to give it.❤️🙏.
As a Christian, the main thing is having a relationship with God, and learning to trust God in what God is leading the Christian to do in their life. This is vastly different from only one guy claiming to hear from God and acting as an authority above question.

Shows are usually staged! My sister-in-law was on house hunters and they had already picked a house but they still went to see others. The show also wanted them to show a different realtor since their realtor was an older man! My sister-in-law wanted to be on the show where they renovate your house but they said no but we can have you on this show instead. They didn’t get very much money and her husband who is an orthopedic surgeon had to take off work so lost money too. It is fun to say they were on the show though!

      @PetThePeeves 2 роки тому +1

This one isn’t. Several of the young women that were the headliners of the show have UA-cam channels and have answered VERY in depth questions beyond just what we saw. I’m very sure that in post things were edited for drama and obviously the music makes it seem less realistic, but these situations were real. They will tell you it is not always a physical sneak out escape…but sometimes it very much is. Especially when dealing with the FLDS-women can be taken within hours to a “house of hiding” at which point there is little hope of ever finding them again. During the trials that have taken place there is court evidence of this practice as well as the severe emotional blackmail and religious abuse that takes place. Women are a commodity, something to be owned precisely because they produce more members. I’m not minimizing what men go through, especially boys, but I think it’s less likely to be a physical restraint in the case of males. What they were doing was real. I have no doubt the drama of it was amped up.

I loved that show but hated the 'escaping' scenes because they were so staged. In many cases they were recreations. It was the people's life stories that were really interesting. I would have rather watched an hour long interview about their life with each person 'escaping' than watch the 'escape'. All of the girls on there with the exception of Amanda had be on "Polygamy: What love is this?" several times and I learned more about their lives from those episodes then from 4 seasons of Escaping Polygamy. That's why your channel is so nice to watch. Question: if for some reason you decided you wanted to go back and rejoin the FLDS bringing Melissa and your kids with you would they take you back? Is there even a current structure in place that would allow that?

  • @NancyCronk

First, I have enormous respect for both of you for your spiritual and intellectual integrity. Second, clearly the Escaping Polygamy producers need to add drama to make the show more interesting (sells more commercials). Third, the experience of a man in the cult versus a woman or girl is probably extremely different, since girls may be more easy for them to control and manipulate and threaten, than a boy. Thoughts?

Hello! I want to thank you both so much for sharing your stories, aka testimonial stories. I can relate so much to you both. Not only was my membership in my church suspended, but, I too would eventually leave. In my church we were taught that your churches were stemmed from my church. Just like the both of you, my husband and I do not raise our children in any particular church. One other thing, if it be God's will I would love to talk to you both, so you can hear about my church and the similar journey that I had to bare as well. If not that is okay I will continue to follow youtube. Thanl you so for allowing me to know that I wasn't alone. You both are a true blessing to God! Have a wonderful week ahead and God bless you and your family!

I love you guys and I know you know Amanda Rae and are both realistic about what’s up…I think people that have listened to both y’all and her have a better grasp on this. Obviously in post everything was made very dramatic. But what they’re doing is real, and there are some where the physical restraint or house of hiding method is in use or being threatened (for the women, for obvious reasons).
Rachel Jeff’s trying to contact her sister Theresa is one that shows how it’s more than JUST a move out…Theresa is at that point in the Pringle SD Refuge, but we know there are MANT “refuges” that aren’t known compounds. And if the women are known to be contacted by outsiders and obviously, worse, apostates (and I assume Rachel is right up there with the Wall sisters as far as traitors) they’ll be moved to one of those more obscure areas within hours. It may or may not be possible to ever find them again after that, and it would take a lot of money to hire someone to do so. Then there’s Suzette trying to contact her adult daughters, the only two children she couldn’t take when she saved her others and herself. They had been hiding one down the street in CC from her and her resignation is heartbreaking. She straight up says once they’ve been seen it’s all over-her daughter will be either moved to obscurity or so tightly monitored that she will not be able to sneeze without permission BECAUSE Suzette has attempted to find her (and worse involved cameras).
For a male’s experience that shows you the reality..,Isaac Jeff’s. Not his escape, really. They’re clearly nervous about being involved with a Jeff’s son, but other than that it isn’t that icy different from Loren’s. But his interviews are heartbreaking because he is unintentionally transparent in how emotionally devastating it is to accept the monster his dad is and how it was his dad that removed his mother from him. I think they said he was about the age Sam was when he left and that kid…I teach high school and it IS sometimes easy to forget those big boys are still boys and I wanted to hug him so bad. And I am not a hugger.
But here’s the one to watch-when they help him finally find his mother in her “house of hiding” (one of the repentance houses). According to him, she had been sent away forever but she did not know that. We do find out in that episode she was working at a chicken factory deboning and sending $1000 a month to them. Still. They find her. And watching what happens is probably the most raw and chilling thing in that entire series, including Melanie’s escape from The Order-where she very much WAS being PHYSICALLY held back and even had her windows boarded up. She is so happy to see him but so, so heartbreakingly brainwashed. She hasn’t seen him in over three years and it takes very little time for her to begin preaching to him and then says to him “Why don’t you give a sermon to me?” At that point he was in her apartment and by his breathing he is on the verge of a panic attack. He literally runs away, gets in the car, and asks (I think it was Andrea and Amanda) to DRIVE. He admits he felt like he might have gotten sucked back in. He was so overjoyed to find Mother and obviously knew the outcome could be devastating, but like anyone wasn’t prepared for how it would feel. It’s good to show that men are abused, too, because religious and emotional abuse are VERY real. And watching her really did make me a little sick. She is so delighted and blown away to see her son but she isn’t able to spend more than a few minutes enjoying that before her brainwashing checks her. It’s a glimpse you don’t always get to see of what it REALLY looks like, especially when dealing with adults that have reached middle age and just don’t have the tools to even contemplate giving up what they’ve devoted their lives to. They really do believe.
That show really is geared more towards The Order, obviously, because that’s where they’re from. And the Kingstons are just as diabolical as Warren. IMO even more dangerous because we know he had clearly lost his mind at this point but when he began his reign he was cold and calculating. Paul Kingston is that and just as easily able to manipulate but he is at the same time very easily able to work with the outside world. They’re extremely savvy with the law. Warren was too of course, but because the FLDS communities were even more isolated resistance from the inside was probably easier to squash without ever involving the outside. I also think Warren’s narcissism and literal god complex made him less likely to play the game as well as the more practical Kingstons. I don’t know which is worse, but I do think the Kingston group is more likely to survive because of this. It seems to ge a more toxic community in some ways.
Lastly the women helping are still processing their own trauma years later. So asking Matt to take care of them isn’t because Jessica really thinks these guys are going to shoot her dead but because she HAS been beaten and severely abused by men in a religious cult so I have no doubt even though they weren’t necessarily being outwardly aggressive that was very triggering for her and the perceived danger was very real. Jessica to me seems to be one of the most easily able to talk about her life as Stephanie and acknowledge the hell she went through while actively integrating it into her new life as Jessica. Andrea, too. Since they were both thankfully removed as younger teens they’ve had time to get help and were luckily able to find excellent foster families (I love Jessica’s story of how she literally asked her adoptive mother to rename her). Y’all know Amanda is still working…I actually listen to culty cup of coffee sometimes because it’s a little therapy community and often she’ll specifically say we’re not doing The Order today, we’re doing how to deal with trauma. Everyone has their own and obviously some is more extreme than others but we only have our own lives as frame of reference.
For anyone that read this unintentional essay it’s to say that I think in regards to Loren’s episode they’re pretty on point, but as for the show as a whole, it’s not often that simple, even when dealing with women that are of age to leave. As Sam and Melissa point out it’s often not so much the physical leaving as it is the incredible amount of emotional pain that brings, and having a group there to support you emotionally and be cheerleaders I’m sure is powerful. I can’t ever guess what I would do, truly, having not been raised in a cult but I do know that I’m not emotionally strong and that I would probably need something like this to help me leave just because I wouldn’t be able to handle it alone. They’re also able to use their connections with different relief groups to help secure housing, schooling, etc. Probably the show footed the bill at times, too. That’s no small thing. I’ve noticed for the older adults being able to leave and provide for themselves and their children seems to be the forefront issue…women especially. In The Order the men transparently do not support their children so the women do, but they are GIVEN jobs by The Order and do not usually have marketable skills much less education that would apply in the outside and the fear of trying to start over in middle age and with children is crippling. I’ll say the education is usually even more of an issue for the FLDS women, but they were at least taught skills like sewing, hair dressing, most are capable or gifted in childcare, resroucrful with food since many had little to work with, etc. I’ve seen several that are making good money putting their skills as seamstresses to work. It seems like in The Order even those practical skills aren’t taught, really, since that group takes the opposite approach-attempt to blend in, not actively stand apart. They aren’t making their own clothing as a rule.
I can’t imagine being Sam and knowing “Ok, this is it, I may or may not see my family again.” I can’t even wrap my head around it. Even if I had a crappy family (I am blessed to have an excellent one) they are still your family. Even for the men that usually have really good success in construction for example as a means to support themselves, that is just heartbreaking. That is the intention these women had with the show IMO. But to market it you have to let post throw in those irritating royalty free music clips and add some heartbeat sound tracks to make it feel like an adrenaline rush.

I would love to see a video with you discussing a typical church service. Are you expected to be at every church event? How often does the community to meet? Do y’all sing and then read scripture like a typical church? Do you use a regular bible or other text? How long is a service ? Do you have a preacher or just the prophet talks? Are women not allowed to talk during church? I’m just curious as to what a typical service looks like.

    I really liked this episode.
I taken me until 37 to decide to leave.
I own my place and run my own small construction company so leaving is more of dealing with emotions than anything. I have never loved or allowed myself to love because of the belief of placement marriage. Now that my heart almost has a pulse and I fill somewhat free to entertain the idea of love i was talking with a friend on this subject and i jokingly said that i should phone those escaping polygamy gals and ask for help finding a first date. So Her comment on why did you phone us hit my as pretty funny.

It seems as though he appreciated the emotional help, and I think that is possibly more of a reason to actually ask or seek out help. In a way I think the boys are not supported as much as the girls/women, because they are boys. I think they have been abused emotionally, physically and psychologically as much as the girls, of course it looks different in all situations. My heart just breaks seeing the boys suffer quietly just as the girls do.. thanks for all of your videos, your voices have touched my heart for sure.

I won't give up on them no matter what. Yes, I know you said that the parents were emotional, but yet they still stick with the rules set down by some so called prophet.

He wasn’t necessarily competition for the elite men, but he wasn’t a lost boy bc they knew he could contribute labor/money to the church.
