    I kinda wish we got a TCW episode where we get to know the crew of some armored vehicle like an ATTE or Juggernaut, kinda like Fury. We always just see the vehicle as a plot device or background fodder, as if the crew is only as important as the sum of their parts. You have to imagine those crews had quite a close relationship.
    I have to agree with these other folks, though. The open “turret” of the ATTE has always been and will always be one of the dumbest design choices in Star Wars

      The one thing I never understood with the AT-TE is why they either didn't have four anti-personal canons in the rear or move the two that were there towards the middle of the rear so they could have an easier time hitting targets on the ground closer to the walker. Cause the cannons couldnt really see the ground.

    • @rosiehawtrey
      @rosiehawtrey Рік тому +13

      It's the land dreadnought idea. Guns in every direction - but I'd expect the rear firing weapons to be used for sniping on a breakthrough mission - hitting enemies from one side, while advancing infantry hit them from the other (while the top barbette and bow ball guns target forward) .. The difference between the Vickers and Soviet versions of this concept is this thing is fast enough and maneuverable enough to be useful..and even those would have worked if decent engines had been dropped in with a drivetrain that wasn't made of Edam with delusions of grandeur.

    so why exactly isnt the main gun turret fully enclosed? they couldve widend the turret ring and put the commander, sorry, "spotter" in the turret with a cupola and remote weapons station. our tanks on earth have better turrets than AT-TEs. also the main gun doesnt appear to be stabilized and since it has legs instead of tracks it cannot fire acurately on the move; real world tanks do often stop to fire, but they are MUCH smaller targets than the AT-TE, so the AT-TE could be taken out by something like a missile or artillery shot. i love the AT-TE, its one of mt favorate things in star wars, but these flaws durastically reduce its effectiveness.

    I think the exposed gunner might be a reason why the empire stopped using it. In a tank battle spotting the enemy first is crucial so an exposed gunner makes sense. Against insurgents you don't need big guns and the exposed gunner is an easy target for sharpshooters.

    • @silcrow1820
      @silcrow1820 Рік тому +7

      Well, exposed gunner is actually a design flaw that can be fixed pretty easy. The two real problem with AT-TE and other republic era war machines for empire
      1- empire wants republic gone and forgotten. So they dont want to use anything that is left from republic specially in active action zones. Thats one of the main reasons most of the venators or gunships are gone.
      2- tarkin doctrin. They are effective war machines, but they are not scary. They dont crush hopes and plant seeds of fear. Empire didnt want its army to be effective, they wanted it to be look scary enough to make people not even try to oppose it.

      The only one who'd suffer is the very exposed main gunner. For everyone else, it's pretty much a joyride for 2 reasons. One, unlike real life where we have man-portable antitank weaponry so effective to that tanks could be crippled & the crew killed in as little as 2 shots, SW universe doesn't have that kinda thing, thus making being inside the AT-TE very much safe. Two, the AT-TE has 6 anti-personnel guns. Anything, droid or not, stupid or crazy enough to take on the vehicle would be mostly gunned down before they get to do much damage.

  • @justjoking5841

    Armoring the front, adding a shield emitter, and turning the smaller guns into the equivalent of an area defense system with toggling controls (auto and manual) plus broadening the turret traversal rate.
    The ATTE would also be massively improved with an enclosed protected turret canopy for the main gunner.
    Having infantry within seems superfluous as smaller versions of the Turbo Tank can easily fit the role of APC or IFV.

      The only real threat to the main gunner alone would be snipers. Staffing from above would take out the entire vehicle anyway, making it pointless to cover the guy to begin with. Explosions, shockwave & shrapnel flying happen like 12 feet beneath the guy. Coupled with the fact of being armored himself in the first place, meant that those things are of no threat to him. Stray shots fired from the ground don't usually go that high as well, making it a non-issue.

    It seems like for an AT-TE to actually be effective it needs a driver, an assistant driver who controls the forward anti-personal guns, a commander/spotter inside the front cabin, two loaders in the front cabin to load the mass driver cannon, one of them to replace the gunner when they die, the sacrif- I mean, the gunner, someone to man the rear anti-personnel guns, and at least one guy running around fixing things.
    So, at least 8 guys to crew it. So really you’d be able to haul around a single squad per ATTE. Cause I doubt that more than ten guys will fit in there without being in the way of the crew.

    • @hetzer5926
      @hetzer5926 Рік тому

      @@PodreyJenkin138 driving an ATTE is gonna be difficult, so whoever the driver is their gonna be giving that task their full attention. Their not gonna have time to man the front guns.
      The Assistant is there to do that, but their primary job would be helping the driver know where’s safe to walk and where it’s not, and they’d be scanning the area in front of the tank for mines.
      The Commander is the spotter by default, no sense putting a spotter outside of the tank. Their job is to command the tank, tell it where to go, and what to shoot at, ergo, he’s the guy who’s gonna spot targets.
      Then it’s gonna take at least one guy to load the gun, but since the gunner is in a really bad position, best to bring along a backup who normally works as an assistant loader.
      Then you need someone to man the guns in the back, the assistant driver could feasibility do it, but it’s just a lot easier if someone was back there manning those guns to keep an eye on the back.
      Then there’s the mechanic who’ll fix things when something eventually breaks. ATTE’s are complex machines of war who are constantly getting shot at. Something’s gonna break or malfunction on every deployment. And everyone else has already got a job to do, best bring along a specialist who, in an emergency, could fill in as a driver or loader.
      And last there’s the poor sap who’s gotta man the main gun. I’d prefer that it was an autonomous system that the commander could have controlled, which would cut down two crewmen.
      8 is the ideal number of crewmen to operate an ATTE, 6 is the bare minimum. That covers the Driver, assistant, commander, gunner, a loader, and a mechanic. The rear gunner will have to be filled by one of the passengers. But ideally you’d what that position filled when the tank is deployed, passengers or no passengers.

      (If so, then I will counter it with Venators showing up a bit too early in TCW 2008, when they're implied to be unleashed later on in the war, as shown from the CWMMP works.)

    Its really weird that the gunner was exposed. However, Star Wars: Commander (A mobile game that is canon, but shut down in 2020) confirms that the Rebel Alliance did use AT-TEs, and even modified some to become Elite AT-TEs, an improved version witha more powerful cannon that did not need an external gunner (who i presume sits inside), a much better protected cockpit and overall strong armor.
    However, this version does remove the anti-personnel blasters, but I think it also reduced the crew number.
