I prefer the AT-TEs. Their magnetic feet can help walk on walls and even fight in space. That's a badass feature.

Imagine a division of AT-TEs in the frontline and the AT-ATs in the back. They would mow down everything.
They could just utilize cannons. Well, the empire doesn't use cannons, but they would be a hell of a lot cheaper than an AT-TE
+ Tac Son. Tactically the best positions for the AT-TE's would be closely beside the AT-AT so that speeders can not fly between their legs are wrap grappling hooks around them. The AT-AT could level enemy targets while the AT-TE would be in a support roll and target faster moving targets that would try to move in on the walkers.

Not exactly. It might be expensive to move the cannons long distances. Also, they are easier to knock out. You could always mount a massive cannon in the hull of the AT-AT, but that presents an equally massive hole in the armor. The AT-TE can go places where even the AT-AT, let alone cannons, can go.

I would love to see that happen but I would have to throw in a few AT-AAs for anti-air support because the AT-TE didn't have the ability to target air units and the AT-AT could only hit things in front of it.
What about the ability for the AT-TE to basically walk up vertical mountains as demonstrated in the clone wars? The AT-TE could essentially take the high ground if the terrain permits.
And it's ability to space walk :P

Well the AT-TE is a hell of a lot more mobile and can climb up walls and is even pressureised to be used in space and theoretically under water

The AT-AT is pressurized... and I still fail to see how the ability to climb up walls is a true advantage. Literally makes it a much, much larger target to anyone with even a basic radar scanner...

the AT-TE's design makes much more sense because it has wide legs, giving it stability... The AT-AT doesn't look like it would do well on non-flat terrain. it looks top heavy and like it will tip over at any moment.

The funny thing it is the first "AT" in his name means "All Terrain", so both the AT-TE and the AT-AT should be good at all types of terrains but at the end...

The AT-AT is very Good in All Terrain, it may only have 4 legs, but those legs are taller and longer than the AT-TEs which means they cover more surface area with every move which makes them difficult to trip. The AT-AT also has a higher profile which means it can identify targets faster and take them out at longer distances.

Personally i'd use the TE, smaller and less visible. Plus it's climbed walls before! the AT-AT is powerful for sure but it's slow and easily visible. I don't think a lone AT-AT could really do well on a hostile planet purely because it would be detected easily.
In my opinion the AT-AT is more for looks it strikes fear into the enemy by being so large and visible but I do agree with the AT-TE being somewhat more tactical and practical for it is more versatile for various combat situations

It may be easy to hit, but even If you see it, you will still probably not penetrate its armor.
Imagine you had a blaster rifle and you were an enemy soldier, in the midst of a battle looking on at one of the two walkers in front of you, the AT-TE, similar height to you, only a few metres taller overall, maybe you can even see the exposed driver, or the AT-AT, standing literally dozens of metres above you, taking anti aircraft guns to it's head without any problem. Like a building sized tank. Personally i would find the latter to be more intimidating.

Ah, but being a tank isn't the only, or even the best, way to win a battle. Information is key, always, and if you're using AT-AT's then your enemy will almost always know where you are. In addition, due to their size it's pretty easy to hide from them in dense forests or urban areas. Thus your enemy will always have the advantage due to them being able to decide where and when to engage the AT-AT's.
When assaulting a fortress or base, like on Hoth, I'd use the AT-AT's due to their immense power. But when fighting an open battle against an enemy I think I'd rather have the AT-TE's due to their smaller size and, I think, better speed and maneuverability. I think their just a little more flexible in how you can use them.
One thing that was left out is cost. If something is half the size, you can potentially have twice as many at any one time.

Anyway. That makes sense, I was just thinking that with the difference in size one would be considerably more expensive to make. But you're probably right.
But the AT-AT is or at least seems to be well over two times as powerful... or at least thats the way I interpreted it. So having twice as many AT-TEs may still be a disadvantage.
TONY FRIZZ Yeah you're right to an extent. As the numbers grew the advantage would start to lean towards the AT-TE, I once read a military history book that said in a twelve on ten fight, the two extra men don't make a huge difference, however if it's twelve thousand against ten thousand, then, though the odds are the same, the impact of the difference is far greater. So I'm guessing we'd see something here. Where the cost difference (if indeed there is a difference that would allow more AT-TE's to be put into service) would only swing the battle if it was a large scale battle where the numbers counted for more.
...And I'm going it to way too much depth on a random topic again.
I question that, just look at how tanks during WW2 were utilized. Costs played a massive role in the way victories/defeats occurred as well as the type of tactics utilized. If the AT-TE had better speed I'd suggest baiting AT-AT's with one and flanking to get underneath but since they move about a 1/3rd of the speed of an AT-AT, concealment would likely be better. Utilize the AT-TE's lower build to better conceal it, draw the AT-AT past the hidden AT-TE's towards an exposed one which could be built to cheaper specs and then hit the AT-AT from the side long range.
funny enough, the the AT-TE actually makes sense mechanically
except for the fact is uses feet (so hard to imagine right!) which are much slower and less efficient than anything with wheels.... i mean sure it can scale up crevices... but first of all legs that size wouldnt be able to haul an AT TE up, and why need to climb cliffs when you could just be deployed right into the action via aerial transport...

I never liked the AT-AT, it had few weaknesses, true, but the weaknesses it DID have were shockingly apparent to a skilled observer. It was too slow, tall and top heavy. It was embarrassingly easy to trip, and the over exposed underbelly was easier to reach than the AT-TE plus the AT-TE could climb sheer rock faces and has been proven to work in space as well, not as a ship of course, but as a quick positioning artillery battery in space. The AT-AT's underbelly was easily penetrated by a lightsaber and it could be destroyed by a single thermal detonator. Quite frankly, I can't understand how the rebels didn't win the ground war on Hoth. The AT-AT is more of a ranged weapons platform and terror weapon than a truly effective tank. Just like the Death Stars, all three of them and the super star destroyers. They should've updated the AT-TE rather than replace them with the AT-ATs

AH, but the Star Wars universe doesn't DO tracks, they do walkers, or repulsor lifts. The only species in the Star Wars universe that I've seen that DO use tracked vehicles were the Wookies in Revenge of the Sith

OR give the underbelly better armor as well. giving it six or even eight legs would have been better as well since it would have made it much, MUCH harder to trip as well. Heavy repulsor lift vehicles made them incredibly slow as well, such as the droid army vehicles the Trade Federation used in Phantom menace as well as the Empires world devastators
This is true but some materials can deflect lightsabers altogether and some can slow their progress substantially. Case in point, did you notice how hard it was for Qui Gon Jinn to cut through the door to the Trade Federation bridge in Phantom Menace
Anyone else think the AT-ATs and STs in Battlefront are too small?
I do, especially the crashed AT ATs on the ground. There's no way a stormtrooper would be able to fit inside the AT AT head without crouching.

We complain about plot armor because it leads to people severely underestimate people or factions or vehicles that normally are effective until the plot calls for it to be ineffective. Ex the Stormtroopers.

As much as I love and adore the AT-TE, I have to agree with you. The AT-TE was meant for more of a support role in addition to infantry and other vehicles rather than as an independent assault craft.

Your analysis is over simplified and biased.
The AT-TE is equipped with a mass driver canon, the same type of weapon used in space combat between capital ships and fire many type's of ordinance to take down all kinds of targets and at a far greater range than the heavy laser cannons of an AT-AT. Heavy laser cannons are common to starfighter, speeders and tanks throughout Star Wars and would actually be quite ineffective against another AT-AT based on information given and we see they do not inflict critical damage on an AT-TE, which can endure multiple hits from a heavy laser cannon, but not missiles, which the AT-AT is not equipped to deploy. What the AT has in armor and speed, the TE makes up for in range and shear firepower. They are at least more evenly matched than what is asserted in this video.

For slow lumbering behemoths like the SW walkers, any realistic war would see them turned into dust by bombers and artillery anyway. Or shot in the knees constantly. I'm a mech nut, but I conceed that knees are a vulnerability to anything on legs. The only good walker is a very fast, nimble one that can take advantage of loads of cover.
Anything else is sniper or artillery bait. Or worse, will have balsey infantry stick a shaped charge on its ankle as it walks by their fox-hole. Real world tanks have a big enough problems with limpet bombs, incendiaries and ATGMs, and they are low to the ground.
Realistically, the TE has the advantage with sloped armour, a lower profile, 360' of turret traverse, and more legs. But apparently it's against their rules of war to shoot walkers in the knees in SW. The same way it is to use scatterguns/slugs against Jedi.

The AT-AT supposedly has just as much armor on the legs as anywhere else. If the vehicle has enough armor, even artillery is useless to stop it. There are numerous ways AT-TE could defeat AT-AT. The AT-AT is very poorly armed.

Except you can't have a joint and make it fully armoured, then it stops being a joint. You'd have to cover the knees in bundles of chains or old tires like modern tanks do around the turret ring. THe turret ring is one of the thickest parts of a tank, but one burr will still immobilize the turret, and would do the same to a knee joint.

On a one to one fight with an AT-AT I don't think its wall climbing ability would contribute much. That being said the ability would prove useful in certain situation.

it also can basically go anywhere, including places that the AT-TE cannot go, such as deep swamp
at-te can go in space walk on asteroids and walk up 90 degree mountains. at te can go more places than at at. it also played more roles than at at ever could. at te even shot down star ships. at is so large that only deep swa,ps give it an advantage. than again at te can walk under water. Matter fact at-at was so big it could only do so much and fit on certain battle fields. While you could put the AT-TE any where and it would do some degree of work. Only thing the AT -AT has going for it is the weapons and armor thats it. Even that height advantage isn't much of an advantage when you can see it miles away and prep counter measures for it.
David Jordan yes but most of that is in the clone wars tv show, which uses "bullshit physics" and made up abilities. before the clone wars tv show, the AT-TE did not have the magical power to haul several tons of metal up a sheer cliff face.
according to all the books and official specs (such as vehicle guides) before that the AT-TE did not have the ability to operate in space, climb rocks or basically do anything like that. it was all just made up for some guys childhood wet dreams to make the AT-TE seem better than it actually was.
And in regards to that star ship thing, for one, i saw the episode where they destroyed several munificent frigates with hidden AT-TE's and stopped watching the show after that.
NONE of the AT-TE's weaponry could do that much damage, let alone penetrate shields.
At-TE's weaponry sometimes had trouble penetrating spider walker armour. So imagine how it would fair against starship armour.
And as for the height advantage not being a thing, dude, do you even realize the field of fire that offers the AT-At. not only that but you cant really prepare for an AT-AT. Mines dont work, fighters cant penetrate the armour (not to mention the supporting tie fighters) and artillery are not always accurate.
face it, the entire clone wars series was just an adventure in making the clones seem better than they actually were. The AT-TE was obsolete and inferior tech by the time the AT-AT was designed. as cool as swords were, we dont use them in modern day war anymore for a reason. Same as the AT-TE. It was cool at the time, but the times have changed

The AT-AT is about 6 times taller than the AT-TE, and its' neck can go on a 60 degree vertical angle. Those factors should allow it to take down anything on a higher ground than it.

Well that's all well and good.
But how would an AT-AT fare against METAL GEAR REX?
Well, we don't exactly know how the armor and weapons improved over time, so it's impossible to predict. Maybe a single AGM-114 from the REX would be able to hit the neck and one-shot an AT-AT, maybe it would be invincible.

does anyone realize that AT-AT came first since the 2nd part of Star War series were made during the 60th? In the first part (lets say the prequel) of the series born later after the year 2000, the weapons design are more realistic and combat effectiveness since the modern viewers are more logical. In the second part, weapons designs are more in favor of looks and terror because at that time they make the movies, thats how viewers want: bad guys with bigger but dumb stuffs. So its no surprise thats many weapons, ship designs and science advances in Star war look like they got direct down graded during the Empire reign.
Back to the topic, TE walker has a rotational mounted heavy blaster, TE already won in design and the AT will need a lots of upgrade and many tier higher weapon to make up for it obvious weakness. This match up can easily be one of the most illogical aspects of entire franchise.

That said though the AT-TE does have an advantage with a 360 cannon. However in nearly everything else it falls short compared to the AT-AT. The AT-AT will just soak up any damage and can retaliate with brutal force. Not to mention there was usually more than just one deployed on the battlefield as well as support vehicles.

In rebels they took on two AT-ATs With a old AT-TE who's to say it wouldn't win. AT-TE are also a lot more maneuverable.

Well, that is a dangerous logic... I agree, but how about the Empire using Tie fighters instead of the ARC 170? In my opinion, the ARC 170 beats Tie fighters.

+Anders Callisen Jørgensen I could make the argument that the ARC- 170 was too costly to make and operate. The TIE fighter needed 1 pilot, while the ARC- 170 had a crew of three. That's means more personal that need lots of time and effort- and money- to train, leading to a scarcity of good gunners and pilots. You could get 3 TIE fighters out of the same crew amount. Plus, the ARC- 170 had more armament, and possibly more armor, leading to higher production costs. The TIE fighter was used by the Empire because they were easy and cheap to produce in large volume for the fleet, despite arguably being inferior to the X- Wings of the rebels, depending on what canon/ source you follow. Some things, like the Battlefront games make them equal for balancing reasons. So it comes down to the question of having a smaller number of very powerful, versatile but expensive fighters versus using many more cheaper but less capable fighters that still get the job done and let you field more units.
+zakiducky I hit post by mistake and can't edit since I'm on mobile, but I wanted to add after that last sentence that that is the same question nations face today irl. Cheap but many fighters, or expensive and powerful, but few fighters. Plus, the experienced pilots are always more difficult to attain and retain than the aircraft. As an example, the Japanese started using kamikazes more as WW 2 dragged on because as their aircraft got shot down, they lost pilots faster than they could be replaced while planes were still easy to manufacture en masse. And it took time for them to be experienced enough to be effective pilots, so they pretty much trained the newer recruits enough to steer the flying death bombs into US ships and not much else. I'd imagine the Republic/ Empire faced the same conundrum at the end of the Clone Wars and decided it wasn't worth losing three guys every time a fighter got shot down versus losing one. So they made the switch to TIEs.
One thing you must remember from the Rebel's AT-TE vs AT-AT fight was that the Clone's AT-TE was in a poor state. It was obviously kept together with rudimentary repairs and salvaged gear.
Also, massed AT-TEs made short work of the Separatist fleet when they flanked them at Bothawui.

It is able to go up walls vertically.

not to mention the fact that for the price of one AT-AT, you could build 5 or 6 AT-TEs, which would obviously turn the tides of the battle in favor of the AT-TE.

dont forget that the AT-TE can walk up walls, so it can use that advantage on a clif-based warzone to get far above the AT-AT and get a shot off on the neck ;)

Let's not forget that the AT-TE could also scale vertical surfaces! In addition, it is better armored for the time it was created, should they use newer materials (such as with the AT-AT), the AT-TE would be a superior design, although still leaving the crew more vulnerable.

I think that the only reason that old ATTE failed to scratch the ATAT is simply because the plot required it. those cannons on the ATTE's are really powerful, and the rebels ATTE was turned into a house rather than war machine.

My theory is that AT-ATs are built more for frontline combat and the AT-ACTs are built more for support, and they can't afford the weight of heavy armor because of their cargo.

Three AT-TE would win against one AT-AT. Also, the AT-AT would be totally unable to defeat another AT-AT with its guns, as they are weaker than the main cannon in the AT-TE. The AT-TE was better armed than the AT-AT, but it had vastly inferior armor. It would be the equivalent of a Sherman tank fighting against a tiger tank. If the tiger is outnumbered, it is weak. The AT-AT is poorly armed. Any armored vehicle that is unable to pierce its own armor should be considered obsolete from the moment it is put into service.

I want Disney to hire David Drake to write some short stories about AT-AT and other walker crews in battle in the same vein as the Slammer's stories; really harsh grity stories about armored warfare and the psychology of their crews, like how they think about foot soldiers with rocket launchers 2:13.

Also carry infantry and some vehicles. However a choice of BARC Speeders or AT-RTs. However AT-RTs have an ability that I don't see other walkers use. The ability to jump. That's a pretty good advantage to me when against the AT-ST

The AT-AT will always be my personal favorite, mostly because Empire Strikes Back is my favorite Star Wars movie.
the first order needs to make another at at variant with light armor on the neck and huge blast cannon on the top for a better chance to hit a flying Target. Also it needs legs strong enough to snap a republic cable. its size will be 5x as big as the at at. lastly it would be in black armor with the imperial mark on the side. it can also carry 250 troops with 4 at at drivers.
at te was never meant for 1 on 1 it was meant to suport ground troops
And infantry support also meant fighting vehicles 1 on 1 when your infantry can't deal with it
Like with most comparisons between equipment from the clone wars vs the imperial civil war era, it seems pretty logical that the imperial designs would win, simply because most of them are based on the earlier clone wars equivalent and were specifically designed to be more powerful and have fewer weak spots.

Sure they're more powerful and stuff, but they are mainly designed for intimidation, as that was the way the Empire ruled. If you gave the Republic vehicles, such as the AT-TE, some updates and fix its design flaws, I imagine the Clone Army could easily take on the Empire.

MrAldari I'm guessing either a Rex's AT TE's Mass Driver was old and lost some power or b the AT ATs had some additional armor similar to the droid super tanks, which could handle Mass Driver shots.

Actually, the reason the AT-TE in Rebels lost is because it was extremely old by that point. AT-TEs are known for top-notch armor plating, and could even withstand direct hits from AAT Massdriver cannons with almost no damage. but the Exiled AT-TE had almost 2 decades to let the hull be worn down from Seelos' duststorms. And the Massdriver on the AT-TE was really just meant to destroy lightly armored vehicles like AATs and Hellfire Droids. It really couldn't penetrate heavily armored vehicles, like Super Tanks. And the power cells used on the Massdriver were also worn down. So, a brand-new, fresh-off-the-assembly-line AT-TE could actually withstand a lot of punishment from an AT-AT and dish out a lot of punishment as well. Plus, AT-TEs also have 4 heavy Anti-Personnel laser turrets at the front which could also help the Massdriver do some work. So yeah, it's probably a 50-50 chance that the AT-TE'll win. Duh.
Even then that old AT-TE took a few blows to the face from the AT-AT before being unable to move.

A few things not taking into account:
1) The AT-AT can only fire in the direction it's pointing, a fault the AT-TE doesn't have.
2) The 'Rebels' AT-TE was well worn and certainly not up to spec, thus any comparisons drawn from that fight are, at best, questionable.
But what if the battle was in space?
then the at at would probably tip off the ship its standing on.

Pls remember how accurate the Mass driver 9f the at te is, it shot down vultures, so it could hit the neck or the feet's sometimes, also do not forget about the Mass driver having different types of ammunition. I think it could be possible that these rockets from felucia could penetrate the at at from above
Okay, great video, all I will say is have you considered that the at-te that you used as a basis on which is more powerful was an extremely old and run down one that had only just been kept running? I wouldn't expect at-te's to be better then at-at's but, at-at's shouldn't be THAT much better than a perfectly new at-te, what do you think?

To be fair, in rebels, the mass driver cannon was mounted on an AT-TE that was pretty beat up, and it had probably been damaged while it was being used as a fishing rod for that big worm.

Have to give the little guy credit though, he took an absolute beating for something 20+ years out of date. The fact it could still kill an AT-AT with a well placed shot outstanding. By comparison a US tank from 1970 couldn't even penetrate the armor of a tank from 1990.

Well made comparison. I think it's worth noting the AT-AT works best in a combined arms environment, which shields a lot of its weaknesses (slow movement, exposed underside, top heavy, long legs). The AT-TE, while also a military vehicle and presumably operating in combined arms, I think fairs a bit better independently, given its maneuverability (speed, the ability to climb a sheer face, etc), so in a one on one fight I feel the odds would be a bit more in favor of the AT-TE than you gave credit for. Though the AT-AT is still the superior vehicle by far, and will still win at least a simple majority of fights. Something like 6-7 out of 10, depending on the terrain.
Conventional mass driver cannons don't fire projectiles that drop over short or even medium/long distances. For it to be very effective at damaging a target, it would have to have a high velocity, therefore eliminating the possibility of drop. This would rule out the already slim possibility of firing at an arc to hit the AT-AT's neck.

i agree for one as you said the a-t a-t had stronger armour stronger wepons and only had 2 weak spots while the a-t t-e had weaker armour weaker wepons and more weak spots
When he said that those kinda mortar shots could have been fired only if the crew of the AT-TE was made of highly skilled members I thought about that episode in The Clone Wars serie where the gunner of an AT-TE destroyed mid -air a missile fired at the walker by the droids, what an awesome shot
