Star Wars can’t seem to grasp the concept of how almost unlimited machines are. :T why not connect the battle droid to one of many cheap cameras outside the tank? He’s a robot. Doesn’t even have to look at a screen. But ok nah, let’s poke their head out and risk losing a pilot
its not just cameras, you also have to take into account noise, etc for situational awareness. although i agree that there isn't a reason why a droid shouldn't just plug in. the answer is ofcaurse rule of cool.
Star Wars has issues with networking period. Outside of the Droid Control Ship in Episode 1 and R2 hacking the trash compacter from the hanger we don't see much in terms of computer networking. Even looking up info in the Jedi archives required the Jedi to physically visit their own library rather than pull up the data in their own rooms.
I thought that it was weird that the CIS used piloted tanks rather than making a tank with a droid brain but then I realized that the Trade Federation originally had more organics working for them. That also explains why they used humanoid machines as most of their equipment was already made for an organic pilot.

People don’t seem to understand how perfect of a design this is for your average battle tank: light, quick, manoeuvrable, can function on most terrain, not expensive, only a 4 man crew, decently powerful primary gun, secondary guns for protection, slanted armour and perfectly compliments infantry. This is the ideal tank you want to mass produce for your army; not a heavy tank with the most powerful cannon and thickest armour as they are a huge financial commitment, sluggish, more vulnerable to breakdowns, poorly manoeuvrable, a bigger target and are a massive loss when inevitably destroyed.
The way shells normally work is your high energy will be the biggest boom, AP has a medium boom with hardened case and bunker busters have the smallest boom with reinforced case and possibly extra propellant to get into said bunker before boom occurs. With this range it becomes a case of matching shell to target and picking the biggest boom possible that will reliably affect a target as AP wont kill many infantry and a HE wont get into a bunker to begin with.
Wait so these tanks were both the key to Unlimited Poweeeeeeerrrrrrrrrrr and the High Ground?! Next you’ll be telling me it came up with the phrase: “Hello there ‘General Kenobi’” Edit: Thanks for making the comment of the week one of my comments that was really nice of you
It always annoyed me that the tanks never had doors or hatches that could lock. There were always too easy to open. So many times (in the Clone Wars TV show) did people run up to the tank, pull open the hatch, and toss grenade inside taking out the droids. For once, I would like a scene where the tank doors are LOCKED.
I always wonder what these various SW vehicles are like on the inside. Like I feel like these tanks would be tight and kinda cozy. Then I remember they're built for droids.
While I consider the AT-TE to be the superior armored vehicle in the MBT role, the AAT is truly a very good tank despite its flaws on desing (commander using the main gun for example) and a vital part of the CIS army
All the reasons on why it's the best is why it's one of my personal favorite SW vehicles. It looks like a Cold War Version of the German Panzer tank, cool and sleek design 👍😎👍
For me this tank is ALMOST perfect Is fast, is agile, is very commodity (I don't know how say in English XD) is well armed and is a good powerful weapons. The only problems is the Armour NOT EXIST in this tank and give them on a bunch of Droid like the B1 is a very stupì idea. This tank is claery project for Wolfpack tactics with a good crew trained for this. But if the CIS would improve this tank can leave the crew and make some space for an A. I. An autonomous tank like this without a crew can be a VERY DANGEROUS for in battle. P.S. Sorry for my english XD
I've always wandered about that. They had a droid gunship that didn't need pilots so I don't see why they can't make the tank like the gunship. If you take out the crew equation, the enemy wouldn't be able to capture it and use it against you. Other benefits are that you can make the tank more compact and there is no lag time between spotting the enemy and shooting it.
@@btrando1 Part of it is the Star Wars universe's general reluctance to use their powerful A.I. to its full potential, but the best in-universe explanation is that it was intended to be usable by organic crew in addition to droids. The original contractors might have hoped they could sell it to non-droid armies, and the CIS had lots of non-droid soldiers they would want to support. (The Umbarans, for example.) Because B1 droids can serve any role a human can, the most efficient thing to do for mass-production is to make a tank that can be used by either humans or droids. (This is also why Separatist ships have hallways and life support, even when entirely crewed by droids. Also helps when organic leaders want to stop by or use the ship.

When playing the older Battlefront games my buddies and I came to this conclusion when certain vehicles were left open to grab and use immediately. The droid tank was on that very list, just under the clone gunship. The sabre tanks the clones used were fast, but the firepower was limited. You had to turn your entire tank to face your target to bring your main heavy weapons to bare. The droid tank had that 360 degree movable turret and in 2-3 shots was enough to seriously cripple and or destroy a sabre tank and other vehicles. The sabre's main beam weapons took 5 to do the same where it's missiles took 2-3 salvos. Again had to turn to face your enemy to bring to bare those weapons. The turret turning rate was on the slow side, but since you could turn your entire tank on a dime it made sense to turn the tank and the turret to bring your main gun to bare with good coordination at a faster rate.
The AAT was basically the M-4 Sherman of Star Wars. Countless were built and they were EVERYWHERE the Confederacy could be found. The removable front section is similar to how the M-4's could have their entire front assembly could be swaped out for a new one given a relatively short amount of time.
Considering the raw power disperity in that battle... the ATAT should have this. They are just way tankier in armour and shields. Not to mention their cannoms are way stronger. Only flaw is that they can trip and their cannons have limited fiering areas.
I think the replies given so far to this comment are great for a 1 v 1 exchange between an AAT and ATAT. But, let's say the 4 ATATs versus 20 AATs. The ATAT has the advantage in height, armor, and fire power. However, the AAT has the advantage in maneuverability. The ATAT, though well armored, is not invincible. I think the factors we are missing to help clear up a 4 v 20 battle would be the actual fire power of the AATs tanks and how many shots from the AAT could the ATATs take before they finally broke through their armor. And if the AATs are constantly outflanking the ATATs then there might be a chance. Especially if the ATATs have no support. Thoughts?

I found it interesting that the TCW model for the AAT replaced the rangefinders on the arms with a second gun on each, and also removed the hull blasters and the heat vent up front. This actually gave me false memories where the one that got killed by the upgunned police speeder on Naboo was struck in that heat vent, when the actual shot hit a good foot or two higher, right under the front hatch.
This video made me think of an idea, a large scale warfare game made off of bf2's engine in which there is many "campaigns", much like from battlefield 1 in which there is massive maps with different terrain. Also in which teamwork is HEAVILY encouraged by basically making it much harder to win against an enemy team that is working together.

So I know the missles on the bottom were shown being used in Episode 1 but why didn't they do it for the Clone wars? Same for the LAAT, it had so many weapons, but half of them weren't used, all we really saw from the gunship was the forwards cannons and rockets. The wing-mounted beam guns, air-to-air missiles on the wings, and bombs on the doors, were never used.

BOTH Episodes 2 and 3 showed the LAAT's having those short doors.
Funnily enough; if the AAT was brought down to real-world tanks, or if real-world tanks were upgraded with SW tech, the AAT would be know as a terrible tank for two reasons: 1: its too tall. Supposedly it is close to 10 meters long, which means it is around 8-9 meters tall. (Comparison: M1 Abrams, 2.44 meters height; M1 Bradley, 2.98 meters. And both of those are considered too tall in some circles.) This is way too tall and means that it will find less cover to hide behind and get into hull-down positions. This also means it is a fire magnet, being less likely to have incoming fire miss it. There is no reason its main gun should be that high either. This leads into the second point... 2: The AAT has shit gun depression, as in, there is no gun depression. Because the main gun is mounted so high close to the roof of the vehicle, and so far to the rear of the vehicle so that the barrel is sticking out over a flat surface, the gun can't actually aim down below what seems to be around two or three degrees below perfectly level, otherwise the breach would hit the roof, or the barrel would hit the part its hanging over. (To go back to the Abrams example, the M1 Abrams gun depression is 10 degrees.) This means that the AAT can not fire effectively from behind defilade, and that the enemy would be easily able to engage whatever firing position the AAT would be limited to. So unless the repulsors can handle variable elevation and move the whole tank while it is stationary like the Swedish S-tank, that gun barrel can only point up.
@@josephbirdsall9294 Where is the rear of the gun? Tank guns pivot on a fulcrum which means that there is mass ahead of the fulcrum which is the barrel; and mass to the rear of the fulcrum, which is the chamber and breach which act as a counter weight. In order for there to be that much gun depression, the back half of the gun would be sticking up out of the roof. Tank guns are like icebergs in a way, there is a portion you can see, and a portion that is blocked from view.
@@blah007001 its not a conventional gun though, you can't use modern chemical propellant gun logic on a heavy laser cannon. it doesn't need a breach its a 'heavy laser cannon' and the cross section shows its entirely infront of the fulcrum, with a cable heading into the hull for its charge battery. so no, there is no chamber or breach or mass to the rear of the fulcrum to act as a counter weight. is this bad design? maybe, it depends on the strength of the motors and the weight of the laser barrel, it would allow for vertical gun elevation, which considering its designed for urban warfare makes sense.

In my opinion this is the best tank design in star wars.
Fun fact this and the droid gunship are both based on the mi-24 hinder
I would have used it as the main tank for my Rebel ground troops, in fact anything the Separatists used should have been used by the Rebels.
They might have been scrapped before anyone could use them. I wouldn't be surprised if the Empire confiscated all CIS war material.
The rebels rather rely on plotarmor and main characters to win their wars. Who needs tanks and artillery if one dude can do the same job much easier?
@@sambridgers9543 Thats exactly what happened. The materials were used to fuel the imperial war machine.
@@samuelbishop3316 What the confiscated CIS war material was repurposed for makes little difference: the Rebels were unable to use it.
@@sambridgers9543 Yes I know.
I would suggest the GAT and the two HAGs (The mortar tank from the Pandemic studios Clone Wars game, and the MTT-based one that's basically a railway cannon from Starfighter.)
This tank carried the separatists in battlefront 1 classic.
I love these things, the opening of the clone wars, the memories
Thanks for reminding me why I love the CIS so much
I'm no Seppie, but I'll admit that I've always liked the AAT.
That would be too op, almost cheating
Software Wasn’t compatible.
Also tanks work better with people inside . Loading and aiming the equipment manually
Star Wars has issues with networking period. Outside of the Droid Control Ship in Episode 1 and R2 hacking the trash compacter from the hanger we don't see much in terms of computer networking. Even looking up info in the Jedi archives required the Jedi to physically visit their own library rather than pull up the data in their own rooms.
,, there was virtually no scenario in which an AAT wouldn't prove useful'' exept if it is a 1v1 against magic space wizards.
I thought that it was weird that the CIS used piloted tanks rather than making a tank with a droid brain but then I realized that the Trade Federation originally had more organics working for them. That also explains why they used humanoid machines as most of their equipment was already made for an organic pilot.
its the T-34 of star wars, cheap to make but reliable, multi-role and more armored than most tanks.
too bad it couldn't have been more like a sherman, aka, the best tank of the war.
@@EmonWBKstudios I don’t know about all that lol
@@EmonWBKstudios the sherman is not the best tank of the war, not in production numbers (t-34), not in firepower (nearly any heavy german and soviet tank), not in firepower (again nearly any heavy german and soviet tank), not in mobility (nearly any light german tank), not in tank to tank combat (any german cat), not in an infantry support role (panzer 2 and other similar light tanks), ....
Sounds like youre talking about the republic juggernaut.
The Best Engineered Bactoid Tank paired with the Worse Engineered Battledroids
The way shells normally work is your high energy will be the biggest boom, AP has a medium boom with hardened case and bunker busters have the smallest boom with reinforced case and possibly extra propellant to get into said bunker before boom occurs. With this range it becomes a case of matching shell to target and picking the biggest boom possible that will reliably affect a target as AP wont kill many infantry and a HE wont get into a bunker to begin with.
Damn thing is the Star Wars equivalent of the Sherman, massive number of variants and all.
I refer you to sacred cow shipyards. I also just don't take and speed in that universe at face value. The OG9 is somehow nearly twice as fast.
Wait so these tanks were both the key to Unlimited Poweeeeeeerrrrrrrrrrr and the High Ground?!

Of course they could be locked, but then the good guys may had died, we cant have that.
I always wonder what these various SW vehicles are like on the inside. Like I feel like these tanks would be tight and kinda cozy.
Then I remember they're built for droids.
technically they are built for humanoids, they used droids in them, but it was made for export not specifically for the droid army.
Ah yes, the Sherman tank of the Clone Wars
Or maybe perhaps Panzer IV?

@@LaughingCrowcorp yup. Very practical. Not particulary good at anything, but not really bad anything either. And can be massproduced.
It reminds me of the scorpion tank from Command and Conqure 3 (or the other way around, whichever came first)
While I consider the AT-TE to be the superior armored vehicle in the MBT role, the AAT is truly a very good tank despite its flaws on desing (commander using the main gun for example) and a vital part of the CIS army
All the reasons on why it's the best is why it's one of my personal favorite SW vehicles. It looks like a Cold War Version of the German Panzer tank, cool and sleek design 👍😎👍

you mean a random shot amongst dozens from a high energy plasma ball? you dont need much when you get randomness on your side
This tank is also a good anti-aircraft platform with his main canon.
For me this tank is ALMOST perfect
Is fast, is agile, is very commodity (I don't know how say in English XD) is well armed and is a good powerful weapons.
Also helps when organic leaders want to stop by or use the ship.
the arnour is non-existant? where did you get that from? a game? you know gameplay isn't canon...
the fact it was killed at point blank range from the rear? you know that no real life tank has any real armour in the rear right.
Star Wars: Complete Cross-Sections and Rise of the Separatists describe it has haveing heavy frontal armour.
furthermore it is actually slow at only 55km/h in both legends and canon sources. so you have it completley wrong, it is a slow-medium speed tank with good armour.
@@btrando1 in legends the explanation was that they bought crewed tanks to hide the build up of a droid army. as far as i am aware there is no canon explantion.

Nute gunray: *YES*
I think this may be the first time I actually listened to a channel telling me that they have a new channel. I'm subbed to The Front as wells as this channel. Looking forward to binging some videos on badasses from history.
Loved using these back when I used to play Star Wars Commander. R.I.P.
Ah, the good old days.
I wonder if there are still multiplayer servers of this game and its sequel these days...
The AAT was basically the M-4 Sherman of Star Wars. Countless were built and they were EVERYWHERE the Confederacy could be found. The removable front section is similar to how the M-4's could have their entire front assembly could be swaped out for a new one given a relatively short amount of time.
I love the way you word your titles. Legendary
Great vid Geetsly. Impressive how long the AAT design lasted. Could you do a vid on the Trade Federation lander please if not done already?
A battalion of AATs vs ATATs would be epic. The real question is, would it be a one sided battle?
ATAT's have better firepower and could probably take the AAT's fire before it starts falling apart.
Considering the raw power disperity in that battle... the ATAT should have this.
They are just way tankier in armour and shields.
Not to mention their cannoms are way stronger.
Only flaw is that they can trip and their cannons have limited fiering areas.
I think an atat could probably one shot an aat
Thoughts?
@@josephraffurty9293 This is balanced considering that in s1 an AAT groups did destroy several ATAT’s and crippled Mace position

Most tank commanders and tankers in general prefer to keep their hatches open if they can. Especially panther commanders in WW2, as the hatches can often take valuable time to open while trying to bail from the tank
It is a shame The Clone Wars show didn't have a better diversity of Separatist as well as Republic armoured droids and vehicles like shown in AOTC and ROTS. Would've been cool to see OG-9's, Hailfires, Persuaders, AT-AP and other units get some action.

The AAT is a great design that is the quintessence of form meets function.
This video made me think of an idea, a large scale warfare game made off of bf2's engine in which there is many "campaigns", much like from battlefield 1 in which there is massive maps with different terrain. So I know the missles on the bottom were shown being used in Episode 1 but why didn't they do it for the Clone wars? Same for the LAAT, it had so many weapons, but half of them weren't used, all we really saw from the gunship was the forwards cannons and rockets. The wing-mounted beam guns, air-to-air missiles on the wings, and bombs on the doors, were never used.
they didn't use those in the series because filoni was lazy, he said as mutch in an interview. 'the focus was on the characters not the vehicles' and 'i never really cared about the separatists'

@@abraham2172 and be more chaotic. The Clone Wars was also talked about being this big important war. It should have been more chaotic. Honestly, what's the point of throwing extra weapons on a vehicle if they aren't shown using them in shows, games, or even comics? Also, why the larger doors for the shows and games? BOTH Episodes 2 and 3 showed the LAAT's having those short doors.
Funnily enough; if the AAT was brought down to real-world tanks, or if real-world tanks were upgraded with SW tech, the AAT would be know as a terrible tank for two reasons:
1: its too tall. Supposedly it is close to 10 meters long, which means it is around 8-9 meters tall. (Comparison: M1 Abrams, 2.44 meters height; M1 Bradley, 2.98 meters. And both of those are considered too tall in some circles.)
This is way too tall and means that it will find less cover to hide behind and get into hull-down positions.
8:24 there's quite a bit of depression.
You should do a video about the AAT with the super weapon attached on it, the one shown at 2:17
