@rye4453 I highly recommend reading the books. They're really good. So far, the donghua is following the books pretty closely. There is also a manhua (Chinese manga) that is *gorgeous*, illustrated by starEMBER. It follows pretty closely, but cuts a few scenes. It's no longer available officially translated into English, because Bilibili decided to stop support for their English website completely at the end of February 😭. StarEMBER is also on hiatus, so the manhua is currently paused close to where the donghua is at. SevenSeas has a good English translation available. You can get paperbacks or e-books.
danny getting constantly surprised with this show😭😭 “i wish he’d run on the table” “throwing it is fine too” and “this theme is so calm” “that just got intense” LMAOO
Also please do Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation someday! It’s from the same author of Heaven Official’s Blessing, but the show has actually fully finished at 3 seasons. It adapts the whole novel series.
I'm pretty sure Hua Cheng wears so many accessories because he's so confident he can't be beat, so it doesn't matter if anyone hears him coming 😂 he's such a good character!!
@@brendareynoso3737 if iirc correctly hua cheng had told xie lian some part of the novel that there are enemies that killed themselves even right before he gets close to kill them himself 😭 the moment they heard he's coming for them they decided it's better to be dead now that to die at his hands
Also basically the half-eaten bun in Xie Lian's clothing is pretty normal in Chinese Xianxia (even Wuxia?) It's called 袖中乾坤 which is basically pockets inside the sleeves. It's "bigger on the inside" and taking things out of the sleeves is like player-controlled characters pulling things out of their inventory. So basically, Xie Lian has a half-eaten hard cold bun in his inventory. 😅
Him talking about hua cheng constantly jiggling with every sted he takes is so funny since that's a running joke on the fandom and all the hua cheng cosplayers who can confirm this
If you think the ANIMATION dice scene is pornographic don't even _try_ the audio drama. _Why is there so much gasping._ Oddly I don't consider the dice scene horny so much as tooth-rottingly cute. Guys. You're in public. Hua Cheng's English voice actor is apparently involved with the script, and as a book reader _you can tell._ There's a few little context clues and foreshadowing that might be easy to lose in translation. I'm so, so happy you're watching the dub. Apparently in Chinese Xie Lian _does_ use an innuendo, but in the book he's straightforward so the dub team added it back in. It's a very funny back and forth where the dub team is aggressively adding back in all the gay content censored out in the Hua Cheng scenes.
The dub team and the animators for danmei are doing god's work. Not only do the animators make tiny details that pass the censorship, but they make it so easy. The dubs are amazing additions too!
Xie Lian is such an incredible character because of how kind he is despite all that he's been through. From someone who has read the light novels, I can tell you, Xie Lian has one of the saddest backstories I've ever read. He's gone through so much, even lost himself sometimes and yet he still somehow was able to find himself again and go back to his kind self that he was before.
I find it quite a misnomer that this (and some other heavy danmei) is called a "light novel"! Sellers need to come up with some better categories to put these books in
I CANT WAIT UNTIL DANNY SEES QI RONG. Like qi Rong was wild in the books, an unhinged psychopath. BUT IN ENGLISH DUB HES A BRITISH UNHINGED PSYCHOPATH. I didn’t think I could love him more than I did when I first read the books but here we go. Also can’t wait for Danny to see Xie Lians past, that’s gonna be a fun one to unpack and process.
It's so funny seeing someone like Danny react to the show without reading the book nor the manga 😂❤ And saying things like "what an unbelievably dark outcome for an otherwise peaceful character" when HE DOESN'T KNOW YET are the moments when I'm dying from laughter Best entertainment, 10/10

As a diehard fan of this series, it's so funny to watch you point out obvious things that I've forgotten about. So much of what happens now has complete context from my multiple readings and watchings of the books and show that seeing your perspective is refreshing and fucking hilarious, it's like I get to fall in love with the series all over again through you
I genuinely believe the show’s popularity comes from the recent release of the official English translations of the novel. They do what I did, where you watch the first season of the show, try to find out more about it, find out it’s a book series and then binge it all in a few days
@@palemeadows One of his major development points was going from being "nice and polite" as the other person put it, to losing everything to the point where he wasn't anymore. He wasn't nice and polite, he was hateful and vengeful and wanted to see innocents suffer (not exactly kind), and he wasn't exactly polite about it either (his treatment of Wu Ming, also the way he talked with the man with the hat). He lost his kindness after going through suffering, and invalidating that is invalidating the point that he's human and that he failed being kind after being hurt one too many times. One of the arguably most important moments in all 5 books is that turning point for him - one single person showing him kindness when no one else would, not even himself, and remembering the importance of being kind; that being kind is a choice one has to make over and over again, and Xie Lian had forgotten. Which led to him becoming kind and polite _again,_ although differently. Saying he was always like this is taking away the choice he made and remakes every single time; it takes away from one of the main points of tgcf, and it takes away from his grief, and the reason why he is human, and yet still better than Bai Wuxiang. If he was always kind and polite, then there would've never been need of Wu Ming, and hence Xie Lian wouldn't walk around with regret and a cursed shackle locking away his whole luck. Tgcf would be fundamentally different, with a different protagonist and a different moral and a different plot
The jangly silver pieces Hua Cheng wears were inspired by silver jewellery worn by ethnic minorities in China, if I remember correctly. Goes back to the novel’s author drafting Hua Cheng’s mother as being from an ethnic minority.
its really refreshing seeing the reaction of someone who does not watch or follow any chinese historical dramas nor does he understand the lore behind a lot of things. I feel like this donghua assumes that the watchers at least read the books or have an idea about chinese myths and lore so it might seem confusing to to you. Seeing your assumptions or reaction is really fun.

About the "thousand cymbals crashing", it is mentioned in the novels a couple of times how you can hear the bells on his boots jingling as he walks, except when he's being stealth.

Yeah the Japanese TGCF actually writes/films new OPs and EDs and some are pretty but some are like... hard rock. It's really jarring TBH--and, why?? when these are so good!
Omg yesssss thank you for reacting! Not spoilers, just explanation: Also the heavens are not an afterlife. Heaven is mostly the home, offices, and courtroom(also Jun Wu’s throne) of the deities. There you either reincarnate or turn into a ghost/monster. Before Hua Cheng rose to power there wasn’t a good place for such beings to gather, much less in any semblance of safety. He built it and it’s doors open every so often, such as during the ghost festival. And him putting that guy up for auction and intentionally lose(tho also get to hold XL’s hand which usually he wouldn’t dare do) was honestly one of the best ways to get them all out of the situation safely. Also the other deities reaction to XL is because he is a god of misfortune. They fear being cursed or something lol. Also how deities work. They all start off as human(at least that we’ve seen). No matter how powerful or lucky you are, you can’t become one unless chosen by fate. When the time is right you ascend to heaven, now a deity. XL ended up banished, which means their godhood is revoked. XL situation is unique, but most never get to ascend again, and die. Esp as unable to answer prayers, which fuel their stomachs and mana, ppl stop worshiping them. Thus they often become weaker and starve to death, if I remember correctly. By becoming a god they exit the cycle of reincarnation so usually death is it for any deity, fallen or otherwise, tho it is possible to become a ghost instead of disappearing into nothingness. The first season starts with his 3rd ascension. Also Pei Ming, the guy speaking up in the courtroom, is the guy the ghost bride from the first case has a thing for. And the descendant of the one behind the second case who just got banished. Also deities seem to take on the traits their believers deem them to be. Many think WindMaster is a women, thus they can switch genders easily and are more powerful in female form(love that they love it at least. Not the case for all this happens to). Pei Ming is a god of love if I remember correctly lol. XL wasn’t always a god of misfortune…
I will correct you on one thing. I'm pretty sure that Pei Su, the banished god involved in the Banyue incident, is the descendant, seeing as he ascended later than Pei Ming and to a Lower Court.
@@shavagreycastle where did they say Ming is Xiu's descendant? And I'm not talking to you about the ghost ascension (even though that's a thing) I'm talking to op about gods turning into ghosts

Danny you have absolutely NO IDEA how the fandom went when the dice shaking scene shows up😭😭😭 And yea every san lang cosplayer complains about how absolutely loud his clothes are lmao
Just a quick word about the opening of ghost city... it pops up a lot in these kinds of Chinese stories, but usually these sorts of spiritual places are in a closed off spiritual dimension that only overlaps with the regular world at specific times and places. So you can't just walk into ghost city, not because of any physical or legal reason, but because it's just, kinda not there sometimes. That's also why Xie Lian and Windmaster were waiting for the right time of night to be able to enter.
Okay so I'm watching the reaction and regarding Hua Cheng's character design, the author MXTX made him half Miao/Hmong and they have a very long history of a lot of silver jewelry that jingles when they move. The jewelry is gorgeous for anyone who wants to look it up!

Also basically the half-eaten bun in Xie Lian's clothing is pretty normal in Chinese Xianxia (even Wuxia?)
It's called 袖中乾坤 which is basically pockets inside the sleeves. It's "bigger on the inside" and taking things out of the sleeves is like player-controlled characters pulling things out of their inventory.

Oddly I don't consider the dice scene horny so much as tooth-rottingly cute.
The English dub doing God's work, as always 😌
The dub team clearly understands the assignment!
The dub team and the animators for danmei are doing god's work.
Not only do the animators make tiny details that pass the censorship, but they make it so easy. The dubs are amazing additions too!
@@tufits Details like the heartbeat and glitter effects? Maybe it's just that it's so abstract it's not worth the censors time?
The dubing team is truly amazing

Xie Lian is only polite because he's been humbled by life too many times after getting angry
Reasonably angry, too
No ? He’s always been kind and polite. The whole reason he is targeted is because of it
@@Dianxiashualian I advise you to read (or re-read) tgcf's book 4 again and the biggest turning point of Xie Lian's character.
@@fangurkseraphi have, he was still nice and polite? just easily lost his temper

@@LtTawnyMadison Omg they do?? I never knew.... very strange, I like these ops and eds
Danny's reactions to the dice scenes very apparently teeming with innuendos had me rolling 😭
Wasnt that what they said @@shavagreycastle
Isnt a god becoming a ghost spoilers? We dont see an example of that till WAY at the end, no?

Just a quick word about the opening of ghost city... it pops up a lot in these kinds of Chinese stories, but usually these sorts of spiritual places are in a closed off spiritual dimension that only overlaps with the regular world at specific times and places. So you can't just walk into ghost city, not because of any physical or legal reason, but because it's just, kinda not there sometimes. That's also why Xie Lian and Windmaster were waiting for the right time of night to be able to enter.
