To answer your question, the kid with bandages was the boy in season 1 on the mountain that everyone thought was the "Demon bridegroom". The girl taking care of him died distracting the jealous bride, Xuan Ji, and Xie Lian promised her that he would take care of the boy. Hope that jogs your memory!
Also a little fun fact: The scene where Xie Lian falls down in front of Hua Cheng on the floor after trying to rescue the imprisoned heavenly official was not what happened in the novel. He was meant to fall down directly onto Hua Cheng's lap, but the Donghua censored it

I loved when we figure out who the boy in bandages really is. I definitely was NOT expecting it. I mean, I knew that the villain took many forms, but I wasn't expecting him to be one of them. I'm now in the process of rereading all the books (since the last of the physical copies just came out) and knowing what I know now, so many small details stick out. I remember one line where someone complements Rouye, saying how they want a spiritual weapon just like it. XL thinks "you wouldn't say that if you knew how it was made." CHILLS. LITERAL. CHILLS.

Oh Danny... It already does. You won't learn about it until the very end though. Just small details hinting at something larger. That's why I loved the books.
(When I say the very end, I mean the very end of the book series, not the season. Lets just hope this series is as lucky as Hua Cheng to get renewed another 6-ish times so we can see the ending.)
A little explanation of how Chinese cultivation works in case Danny ever reads it. In Chinese mythology you could attain godhood by reaching the pinnacle of cultivation. (It’s like growing your chi. Chi=magic source)
And with said chi you could use all sorts of “magic” like changing appearance or using fire. In tgcf specifically you are named as what you’re known for. Like the martial gods are called that because they ascended after reaching the peak of martial prowess. Or the water master is known as the water master not neccessarily because he is the god of water, but because he is in charge of a region which is the sea. (Wind master not the best example here 😬)
Yeah, I'd say it's like having a job in the heavenly version of government. You have to know your basic math and english, but you also have a specialty.
fun fact: that clip at the very end with Xie Lian falling in front of Hua Cheng was actually censored, in the books Xie Lian actually landed directly in his lap. "Hua Cheng's exceptionally handsome face was inches away from his... when the stone door opened this time, it dumped him directly on top of Hua Cheng!"

A note on the second season still seeming like setup: that's because it is. An important thing to remember when looking at the Heaven Official's Blessing donghua on its own is that not only is it an incomplete adaptation of a separate source material, it's an incomplete adaptation of a separate source material that is CRAZY long. Like 8-full-300-page-physical-books long. The overall story of the novel is split into 5 main arcs/acts, and the first and second seasons of the donghua combined only cover until the end of the FIRST. So yeah...it can feel a bit slow, but to be fair, this is only the tip of the iceberg
FYI THIS SERIES DOES HAVE A MAIN ANTAGONIST U JUST HAVE NO IDEA WHO IT IS UNTIL THE 7TH BOOK. i mean theyre introduced many times but as separate characters yk

I saw the title without seeing the thumbnail and I knew what scene he was talking about 😭
I noticed from the series that they don't explain what a cursed shackle is, even though in the book Xie Lian talks about them in like chapter 2. I was really confused when I first watched the series when Xie Lian only just mentions it in season 2 and doesn't explain at all. So for more context: Xie Lian has 2 cursed shackles from when he was twice banished from the Heavenly Realm. One around his neck (he covers it in bandages) and one around his ankle. These shackles seal away his powers, rendering him almost defenceless with the exception of Rouye (the ribbon)
Keep in mind, he’s not defenseless, he just can’t use spiritual power unless someone give him some of theirs, but he still retains all his skills as a martial god and he’s naturally freakishly strong and durable due to going 800 yrs relying only on his natural abilities.

I feel like MDZS (Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation) really hits all the things danny wants from this show: more hunting ghosts, a main character being somewhat antagonistic, a compelling villain that doesn't take the whole show to appear, recognizable character designs, it'd be so fun (and it's complete and 35 episodes total)

there is most definitely a single main antagonist but it takes a hot minute for them to come into play. if this show gets a season three, then we'll actually meet them next season. this antagonist has had a hand in a lot of what's already happened but we as the viewers aren't supposed to know it yet.

I do think that Link Click is a pretty comparable show in terms of plot. It’s a lot shorter, but it has the same style/build up. In the beginning of Link Click you go on a lot of episodic adventures that are interesting but not very cohesive. Eventually though, you realize either before the main characters or with them that there is a main antagonist.
I still personally prefer TGCF over Link Click because of how in depth and complicated the side stories can get, and how amazing the pay off is. But I can see how the quicker plot line might be better for a reaction channel.

Yay, new reaction! Also, I just finished reading the novel, and holy shit is Xie Lian's backstory a thing... Like a whole thing, that I was not expecting. Additionally, super epic main antagonist, MXTX killed it with that.

The commentary here had me CACKLING. But, Danny...you gotta be patient. This is a slow-burn romance that takes 7 volumes to tell the main story, OK? They DO kiss by around the middle (assuming no censorship), but we are not there yet. If it's any consolation, the OTHER characters start having the same "Right in front of my salad!" reactions to the obvious flirting as you are having, and it is HILARIOUS. (Also, scimitar E'ming is the cutest "evil sword", for reasons that will become clear when you find out how it was ACTUALLY made, and its interactions with Ruoye - Xie Lian's "ribbon" - are pretty funny too).
Fav moment was Danny being "of course that sword is eveil look at it is the most evil thing in the world!" but the moment e-ming makses .D face Danny says "you should this sword is evil?" E-ming is the 'curse sword' but he's also a puppy who wants someone to pat his head and is happy for the rest of the day.
