to be fair (spoilers for the book btw), qi rong didn't really start calling him that until _after_ the whole "rolling on the floor, making out with each other" at the tail-end of the black water arc. so while he certainly did understand, i don't remember him guessing the truth of their relationship this early on. not that it really matters, though.
also, to clear up confusion since we're having this conversation: in the unofficial translation that i first read, it was "dog hua cheng" and "dog f*cker xie lian." in the official english translation, it is "dog hua cheng" and "dog-f*cked xie lian" lol

16:40 - Yes you are correct. Xie Lians people, the people of Xian Le were refugees in the Yongan kingdom. The King of Yongan wanted to punish all the refugees from the Xian Le kingdom for the massacre and Xie Lian put a stop to it by killing him. Book 3 goes into detail about the history between Xian Le and Yongan so I'm hoping it gets to a Season 3.
It's basically all about the cicle of revenge. The people of Xian Le were refugees due to the people of Yongan, who themselves were refugees of the Xian Le Kingdom, committing a coup d'etat. There's plenty of survivors who would say that the people of Yongan deserved whatever they got
Honestly, I know that that part in next in the story chronologically and give a lot of context to what Xie Lian when through but I am hoping that they change the order or something because that part of the book is so different from the rest and I feel like the juxtaposition with scare of donghua only watchers
We haven't even finished book 1 yet, there's no way we're getting to anything in the third in the next 15 years.

.His birth name is Xie Lian, so that's what most people call him
.Jun Wu (The god emperor guy) calls him Xianle because that was the name of Xie Lian's kingdom and part of his heavenly title when he first ascended. Jun Wu addresses all heavenly officials by their title.
.Fangxin is the name Xie Lian took on when he became State Perceptor of Yong'an, the kingdom you see in the flashback in the episode from this video

Fang Xin was his cover name as state perceptor and it is also the name of his sword. That confused me while reading the books.
Also he's not the god of ribbons. His themed title is the Flower Crown Martial God. I think the other one that's used less is His Highness Who Pleased the Gods.
The changing names throughout this series confuses the hell out of everyone.

If watching Danny's reaction to this donghua taught me anything is that A) making animated products based on a very long series of books is really tricky and B) we book readers are spoiled: we know what's going to happen before even watching so we have no idea if the donghua is telling the story in a way that is easy to understand or not 😅
Very long series of books ... cough cough. 8 ... Looks at Ascendance of a Bookworm, 30+ books. 😂 But yeah, it's still a lot of lore which is made more complicated by the long and varied names for everyone.

I will say, (back when it was still a webnovel) I watched season 1 before reading the novel and I was very confused until I read it 😂 so can confirm, it's a bit vague and confusing, especially if you're brand new to Chinese names/words (@ myself thinking gege was pronounced gehgeh and having to write down everyone's names in order to keep track lol)

Just wanted to clarify, Xie Lian slapped Qi Rong because Qi Rong was insulting San Lang (started to make a rude comment about his disability/eye). That’s why San Lang was making that face with the romantic music. He was shocked that Xie Lian defended him.
Also, I’m surprised you didn’t comment on Xie Lian and Qi Rong being cousins.
Heaven Official's Blessing is also a classic "who done it" mistery, so the actual antagonist won't appear til much later!

TBH I am reading the story for the second time ( just this time it's the published books ver.) and i still get confused with the names of everyone apart from Hua Cheng and Xie Lian ( especially Mu Qing and Feng Xin who I keep getting mixed up as well as their "junior" forms and heavenly titles)

In fairness, San Lang himself outright said "How about just calling me San Lang?"
He's outright the only person so far to say what he wishes to be called.
Don't feel bad about not keeping up. There is SO much backstory and lore that there's no way for a series this short to get any of it across without just a ridiculous amount of exposition. You kind of HAVE to have red the novel to keep up.
God, San Lang and Xie Lian getting mad for each other’s sake is always my favorite thing to see. Qi Rong (aka Kermit🤣) in the dub is so funny, his voice is menacing but also goofy like his character, I like that, he’s a very good antagonist. I can’t wait for your reaction to the next episode, the way San Lang and Xie Lian interact with each other is so beautiful

Qi Rong said it: "We're all lying to him!" hahah! '-' Oh, boy, Qi Rong even knows who the TRUE official antagonist truly is even at this point.
The thing is, in the book we don't get all those flashbacks. The street scene, massacre, all of that. They mention it happened, but we don't get an actual play-through of HOW.
I'd be lying if I said these scenes didn't make me cry, they were brutal and hard to watch as opposed to book 2 just going "He killed his father to protect the peace after An Le slaughtered everyone!!!"
ALSO, that punch scene was gorgeous- Xie Lian put up with Qi Rongs heckling until it was directed at Hua Cheng, that's where he drew the line. I love them 😭😭

You have understood Xie Lian perfectly. Never reveal information unless directly asked and _even then_ never volunteer any facts that might exonerate him, or have you sympathise at all.
The plot is very hard to follow, it's not just you. Something about the way the books reveal information at a drip feed and the somewhat awkward way it flows in English doesn't quite work.
Qi Rong in the dub is _fantastic._ The script in English subtly changes, so his insults actually hit Xie Lian quite directly rather than him just blathering on. It makes him very effective, albeit at the cost of making him a bit smarter than perhaps the author meant him to be.
And hey we're getting bits of Xie Lian's backstory!
I just want to thank you, Danny, for sticking with this series. It's one of my favorites, but I do have to admit that it's got so much lore and exposition to get through. We're finally at the point with the end of this season where we've got most of our main players, if not on the field, then at least mentioned.
For anyone confused on the pre-series lore so far:
Xie Lian was the crown prince of Xianle; he ascended to godhood at age 17 after committing two wondrous acts (saving a child falling from a city wall and defeating a demon). A little over 3 years after his ascension, there was a violent revolution by the people of Yong-An, an outbreak of Human Face Disease, Xianle fell, and Xie Lian was banished for trying to interfere. He ascended again after a few years, promptly stabbed the emperor several times, and was cast back out. This was all about 800 years ago.
As far as I can guess, Xie Lian then became the State Preceptor of Yong-An like...a hundred years into his second banishment? We don't know exactly. After the Gilded Banquet Massacre, he was "killed", staked in a coffin, and buried by Lang Qianqiu. (It doesn't say it in the show, but the book mentions that he was rescued by grave robbers about a hundred years later.)
Like 400 years after that, he was conscripted into the Yong-An military to fight against the Banyue kingdom and was later trampled to death.
The timeline’s so hard to pin down because he has a line in book 1 and season 1 where he says Fangxin and Banyue were about a century apart. Putting the gilded banquet about 300 yrs ago. But then in book 2 and season 2, XL mentions that the gilded banquet wasn’t long after his second banishment (800yrs ago). This implies what you said. I don’t remember where in the books it mentioned how long he was in the coffin, so I got nothing there. I just want a nice, neat timeline!😢
@@Levsa399 So in Chapter 8, he says "I've heard of State Preceptor Fangxin: he was the state preceptor of Yong'an, born AT LEAST [emphasis mine] a hundred years earlier than State Preceptor Banyue." He is also at this point emphasizing that they couldn't have possibly colluded, so it may have been more than a hundred years in reality.
Then in Chapter 22 he says "This was not long after my second banishment. I was filled with frustration and caused a great wrong." I'm hesitant to fully believe him on that, since he is, at that point, being a lying liar who lies in an effort to convince Lang Qianqiu that he had motivation to commit the massacre. (Looking further into it, the "100 years in the coffin" may be a mass hallucination by the fandom, so my bad on that.)
So my conclusion is that he was probably State Preceptor Fangxin more than a hundred years before Banyue, but not as close to his banishment as he leads Qianqiu to believe.
YOU SHOULD ABSOLUTELY START «GRANDMASTER OF DEMONIC CULTIVATION» FOR SURE (the animated one, not the live action one)

- it is a detective fantasy fast paced plot in ancient China with cultivators, the mysteries and themes are great
-the plot is wide scale and epic, with a lot of small details
-the main character slays, you will absolutely love him, he is the moment
- the dynamic between the two mcs reminds me of the main characters of link click, If I had to compare it to anything
-politics
-fighting and cultivating again
-the show is BUILT for your commentary, the comedic elements are fire
- lastly, the scenery is really great and the characters are well built, main ones are complex, side ones are a perfect addition that details the story, none are extra or boring, every one has a great backstory
-sassy homosexuals
The expectations MUST be high because it lives up to the hype💯💯💯

Surely many fans must have commented on this, but I also need to say it. Mo Dao Zu Shi has insane fight scenes one after another, there are ghouls, dead being controlled by a badass character, gore, massacres, lots of massacres, more blood, investigations, gays, badass gays and super angry gays. But gay romance is unfortunately censored, although it does happen and we can follow it very well. It turns out that even in the original work, the heavy plot full of blood and revenge was always in focus, while the romance unfolded in the background, if I can describe it that way. So for you it will be even more exciting content to watch, so we really hope you can watch it as soon as possible!

Oh boy, the fandom LOVES when people who don't know shit about danmei start to watch HOB. We all had that phase of being confused with the names. In fact, I don't know if you plan to watch Grandmaster of Demonic cultivation (AKA Mo Dao Zu Shi) (AKA One of the donghuas from the stickers you showed in the very first episode of your reaction series of HOB) because it doesn't have an english dub, but i'd argue the ones who started with MDZS had it harder because they love to use different names and honorifics

When I started to watch MDZS I didn’t know there was a novel, so I was so confused about everything going on. So I read all of MDZS and then made a list of all the characters to keep track. Same thing for TGCF, I read the books along with watching the show. Allows for a mental picture of the characters to keep them all separated.
I unironically check for a new tgcf video so often that I managed to catch this video before it was out for even 10 minutes. I think I have a problem.

There's this other series that I really want Danny to see cause its from the same creator of Heaven Official's Blessing. It's called Grandmaster of demonic cultivation.
Both series start as books written by Mo Xiang Tang Xiu and I think he'd enjoy the fight scenes and shenanigans with the main characters.
I hope he continues with this show if/when more seasons come out because it gets so insane it would be so entertaining to watch

As somebody who read the books atleast 6 times,I have always wondered how Xianle killed An le without any wounds.
After hearing Danny,that's the only explanation I have💀💀💀
I don't know whose reaction videos Danny's been watching, but most ones I've seen like to ramble for a solid 5-10 minutes minimum. It's always about personal drama and unrelated stuff too. Danny's intros are some of the only ones I watch because he at least shares thoughts and opinions about the content he's about to watch.
Also I think the glossing over of information actually helps more than it hurts. It encourages everyone to comment about lore stuff more than anything else. I know I've done it a few times myself.

Xie lian was the crown prince of xianle and then there was a battle between yong an and xianle and xianle lost. Thats why the whole massacre happened.

Also Danny if you need a name guide because I know I was confused as hell when I first got into tgcf here’s some help
Xie Lian: our main protagonist, this is his birth name and what people who would be considered close to him would call him (parents, friends, spouse)
- Xianle: xie lian’s official heavenly title and also the name of his kingdom and essentially translates to “heaven’s delight”
- taizi dianxia: translates to his “highness the crown prince”
- fang xin: the name he went by as lang qianqiu’s teacher/mentor and also the name of the black sword he used at the time
- general hua: the name he went by while living in Banyue
Hua Cheng: main love interest (obv), this is not technically his actual name bc most ghosts go by a different name than the one they used in life
- San lang: a nickname that only xie lian is allowed to use that translates to “third son”
- crimson rain sought flower: hua cheng’s title as a ghost king
- hua chengzu: what he is referred to by the citizens of ghost city, basically translates to “mayor hua” or “city lord hua”, a very respectful form of address
Shi Qingxuan: everyone’s favorite gender swapping god, this is his/her name from when they were mortal
- lord/lady wind master/wind master qingxuan: shi qingxuan’s official heavenly title
Lang Qianqiu: the god who xie lian killed the parents of, has a massive sword, martial god of the east
- general tai hua: his official heavenly title
Ling Wen: the head civil goddess, the overworked lady with the blue hair
Jun Wu: the heavenly martial emperor, the highest ranking god in the heavens, if anyone in the show refers to someone as “his majesty” they’re probably talking about him, he’s OLD
Mu Qing: xie lian’s personal attendant from when he was mortal, the guy who brought xie Lian medicine for his arm, martial god of the southwest, fights with feng xin a lot
- general xuan zhen: his official heavenly title
- fu yao: one of the two lower court officials that showed up to help xie lian in s1, works for mu qing
Feng Xin: xie lian’s bodyguard from when he was mortal, the other guy who showed up to visit xie lian during his house arrest, fights with mu Qing a lot
- general nan yang: his official heavenly title, was mistranslated to general dick yang
- nan feng: lower court official that helped xie Lian in s1, works for feng xin
Banyue: the little ghost girl that xie Lian pickled, also the name of her country
Qi Rong: the “frog in drag”, xie lian’s cousin
- night touring green lantern: his ghost king title (he isn’t actually on the same level/rank as hua cheng and the other ghost kings he’s just there to balance things out)
Bai Wuxiang: “white no face” the spooky bitch that traumatized xie Lian, the guy in white with the mask that shows up in a lot of xie lian’s flashbacks
I forgot to mention a few other ppl that were fairly relevant
Pei ming: heavens favorite playboy, the guy that was involved with the ghost bride at the beginning of s1 and got involved in the trial at the beginning of s2, martial god of the north, good friends with ling wen and shi wudu (the three tumors)
- general Ming guang: his official heavenly title
Pei Xiu or Pei Jr: the guy that was responsible for the Banyue incident and got banished at the beginning of s2, the descendant of pei ming (not very direct), worked under pei ming
Ming Yi: the guy rescued from San Lang’s dungeon after dice shenanigans, the other hot lady with wind master in s1, wind master’s best friend
- lord earth master: his official heavenly title
Shi Wudu: Shi Qingxuan’s older brother, close with ling wen and pei ming (the three tumors)
- lord water master: his official title
- water tyrant: a nickname bc of how ruthless he is to mortals who don’t pay tribute to him before sailing
It's always funny when I watch to Danny's videos and my mom walks in and hears him swearing on his videos. My mom always gives me that look disappointed parents give (I don't mind the swearing tho)

Jordan absolutely slayed as Qi Rong, and Howard did the same with Xie Lian at the end of this episode. Almost all the VAs do, to be honest - we got so lucky with the cast. 💖 Really looking forward to the next ones! (More pain, yay! 😆😭)
I appreciate your honesty about how little you actually follow what's going on or not. And it's all in good fun, so I don't mind. I mind much more when someone is attempting to make a serious critique of something but didn't even follow what was actually going on or not, and then I remember also how some people actually just straight-up skip some bits of things outright and somehow think they've not missed anything but they never know what they don't know. Read the Books or wait for the other Seasons to air. Then everything will make sense to you. This Masterpiece needs to be complete to be able to understood. EVERYTHING gets explained at the right moments, not in the first moments its brought up. thats part of what makes the story so deep.
I wouldn’t really worry about remembering the names or following the plot TBH. Live in the now! 😂 this particular story is pretty self explanatory. Add your own names in if you like. Call them Bill and Ted!

I so badly need this show to get more seasons so I can see Danny's reaction to finding out what the Ribbon really is. I also love how lost he is sometimes, it's so accurate. Reading the novels makes it all so much clearer haha.
5:04 This series doesn't tell you things in chronological order so you feel just as confused as some of the other characters when things only get partially revealed as you get further in. The thing that I love about that setup is that these main characters that you think you know, the ones that are... I don't know... soft spoken, gentle, quirky, and sometimes annoyingly optimistic loners are actually not quite what you expected.
The further you get in on this series, the more you realize that Xie Lian is not a reliable narrator. It's not that he's activity lying but he keeps his cards very close to the chest. Just a quick glance back and your realize that you never really get to hear his thoughts on some of the more serious subject matters. He doesn't give anything away when he reads about a general on a tombstone to everyone in the cave. It's only once he's recognized by Banyue and Pei Xiuin in the pit that he's basically forced to admit that he was the general who got trampled to death. Qi Rong just outed another past event he was desperately trying to keep hidden from everyone.
How many other times do you see him willingly bring up anything to do with his past? There are verbal nuggets scattered to Hua Cheng every now and then. All we get with his family is the flashback of him playing with foil palaces as a kid (and that other one...) The only other flashbacks given to us by him are the forced out PTSD moments whenever white no face is brought up.
In most stories, you go along the journey with the characters as they grow from start to finish. With this, you realize you're starting very late into the game. That there is 800 years of backstory established but it's all but entirely hidden. You're in for a wild ride.

You calling Qi Rong a frog man was really really funny to me! He's also one of my favorite simply due to his voice actor, he's very successful at not being likable in the books. He's a good tem antagonist!

If it makes you feel better Danny, I read the entire book series not knowing who anyone was and just going on vibes. But so enjoyable when I realized who was who.
I can relate to the "wow that's loud" part, I notice the same thing every time I take mine out after using them for awhile in the workshop. Which fun fact they don't mention in these adds, if you get the fitness style earbuds, they're super effective for hearing protection in a workshop (running saws, planner, drill press, etc.), mowing the lawn, great when you're having sensory overload in a loud restaurant.... and one feature I don't think I've seen in any of the adds, is the touch controls have an extra option to pull up your phone assist (like siri) with a 4-tap, though it's been tricky to get the number of taps correct. So there ya go Danny, more goods to mention in the next sponsorship :P And no, I'm not paid by raycon, I just really love them (been using them for years)
