The first couple of minutes, while they're sitting on the stage together, is actually part of 'To Live is to Die' from the ...And Justice For All album, which was written as a tribute to late Metallica bassist Cliff Burton. When they jump up and the music hits is when Master of Puppets actually begins. The song itself is about addiction and dependency with the lyrics revolving around the subject of drug addiction, hence the middle soft interlude which invokes a feeling of soaring up away from the world as the subject of the song gets high before the instrumentation takes on an ominous and sinister tone as our addict crashes back down.
@wompa70 - Cliff Burton... and it is amazing that at that time, first couple of albums+, they were all guys barely above 20 years old. Young guys. The albums "Master of Puppets" and "Ride the Lightning" = think of drugs, and the lyrics and songs become much clearer too, with much deeper meaning.
You pay attention to the text. Hetfield has written an extraordinary work from the point of view of being a drug that wants to control a man, taking over his thoughts and life only to finally kill him. There is probably no more direct message - don't take drugs because they will kill you. Imagine that they play this piece in every concert to this day, and there are well over 50 of these concerts every year. This is the power of influence.
I absolutely love the lyrics in this song. He’s talking about the perspective from drugs. Once you get hooked and a use them. The control your life. “Obey your master” “the master of puppets is pulling your strings” “your life burns faster” Other songs you should react to are One, Faded to Black, and Sad But True
So did I, I was up in the pit and I swear, I was right by a huge stack of Marshall amps. My ears rang for days 😂 I have miId hearing Ioss from aII the metaI shows I've been to. I regret nothing 😎🤘
This one is good, but if you want to hear a clearer and more enhanced version of Master of Puppets, I recommend the S&M version. San Francisco symphony with Metallica. Released in 1999.
In an interview in the 1990s James said that while this song was about drugs, it could well have been about their own alcohol use. They just didn't realize it back then until their bodies came crashing down and they went to therapy together.
The meaning of Master of Puppets is not always discernable upon first listen, especially live. You might already know this but, just in case, I'll point out two phrases in the lyrics that will help in understanding what the song is actually about..."Viens pumped up with fear" and "Chop your breakfast on a mirror". So, the unwanted "Master" in the song is...?
The "Master of Puppets" they referring to is drug addiction. They have a very famous softer song called "Nothing Else Matters" you would probably enjoy
You want another song you will not be ready for? Slayer - Angel of Death. Very few people are/have been ready for this when they hear it for the first time.
Of two bands that are my absolute favorite bands to listen to, the other band being Nightwish, Metallica is one that I have been listening to since the '90s and I'm happy that other people are getting to experience their music just I have through all these years.
I see you like early Metallica, how about an all-female band that plays just as well if not better? Lovebites - Break The Wall - Shadowmaker live ua-cam.com/video/OnhwV9_LbWk/v-deo.html

Thanks for nice reaction! Love to see people enjoying when they hear Metallica first time. And as you noticed, lyrics often have a meaningful story behind, so it's good to think of them while listening. And they really offer nice transitions in their songs. Some recommendations, trying to get broad view of their musical perspective: - Fade to Black. Heavy and beautiful ballad with deep sad message, one of their classics. Studio version is excellent to hear the guitar solo fully, as it's voted high on some best guitar solo ever votes. But many live versions are good option too, for example Lincoln 2018. - One. Classic reaction song in youtube. Also has good changes and transitions of different types of feelings, and tells very tragic story. Has many good live shows, for example Ireland 2019 is a good recent choice. - The Day that Never Comes. Just don't go for official music video, it distracts too much and is not so connected to song's story. Better to choose live version, for example from Quebec Magnetic show. - Battery, from this same concert as this video, Seattle 89. This really shows their energy and fast trash style during their young prime times. - Ride the Lightning, for example live Boston 2022. From 2nd album, title song. - And from their album from this year, Screaming Suicide, very fresh live concert on April 27 2023, just few weeks ago. They are still going strong :) Enjoy your Metallica journey!
Lyrics about your will being manipulated, most especially by addiction. Their early nickname was AlcoholicA (James had stage fright-but Alcoholism also has a kind of divine creative madness about it: Dionysus 🍷) The calm interlude is the "eye of the tornado" before the withdrawal returns.
For listening to any complex song by Metallica I highly recommend listening to the studio version before listening to the live version, because with the crowd and being filmed you miss a lot of the musical genius behind the song.
It's something that I have to tell you about in a lot of live UA-cam reviews. It can be a big difference between knowing a little bit about their studio album and treating them live and talking about how they feel about Metallica for the first time.
Enter Sandman wouldn't be a bad choice because it's more mainstream and maybe more up your alley. Either versions are good so you can do the video or their live performances.
This was when metal peaked! justice was the best album they ever did and james was in his prime here. james was the baddest man on the planet at this point. METALLICA was PEAK metal
Heads up this song is about drugs and addiction and how it becomes your master and more is all you need. The slow instrumental in the middle is high, then it gets hard again which is the crash or hangover.
I wish my parents decided to get drunk and have accidental sex like 10 years before I was technically born in 1985, so I would have been old enough to go to Metallica in Seattle for one of their best concerts ever. React to a lyric video of this song and listen to the studio version of it. There are a few videos out there... Most of live videos of Metallica, like this, sound a little bit weird in my opinion.
Metallica is great in concert, but in my opinion when hearing one of their songs for the first time, the album version should be done before seeing it live.
During this heavy metal journey, you need to look into one of the most influential bands and guitarists of all time, PANTERA and the legendary late great DIMEBAG DARRELL. I'd start with cemetery bags. The solo will speak for itself as so almost all of dimes solos. PANTERA is responsible for a new genre called groove metal and Darrell is regarded as one of the best of all time. Even from Eddie van Halen himself which is why Darrell is buried with Eddie's original bumblebee guitar from the first Van Halen album. Eddie said dime is an original so he deserves an original.
