@Lowell's Fish Lab I just wanted to let you know, that I finally found a female after about 9months looking actively, and I was thinking it had to be a sneaker male but she was completely plain and drab but then I saw them spawning and she started to show just the lightest hint of orange on her and when they aren't mating she goes back to colorless...but I wanted to thank you for your video I watched it SEVERAL times so I could get the best idea of what the females look like. This is the best quality video I could find!
Hello! Your guide, which I watched over a year ago, has helped me in my own journey of breeding and raising scarlet badis, I currently have 2-3 males and 2-3 females in a heavily planted 10 gallon. I have actually documented some quite strange behavior which I found interesting. Which is: the loose shoaling of about 4 sub dominant males, which I find to be a learned behavior. Over the past year, I have learned so much and observed amazing things from these fish that I never would have thought of seeing if I had not watched your video. In short: I thank you so much for your sharing of this information to the world and allowing us to experience what you have.
That is so great to hear. Thank you! I love watching fish and figuring out why they do what they do. Breeding is a great way to see a broader range of their behaviors. The full spectrum of behaviors comes into play when fish breed.

This is an awesome tutorial! I love all the details you give and that you tested out different methods, ill be trying to replicate this thank you! Also definitely subscribing and looking forward to future videos!
I'm also breeding darios for years. Just want to say, that sometimes females can also have bit of red color on their bodies. Its better to look at the body shape. Kind regards from germany
Yea I have a black tiger colony and it is the same with them. Originally i got 5, 3 quickly developed dominant male coloring, the other two had some hint of male coloring. The bigger more male colored of these two turned out to be a female after all. After some generations in my care now I would also recommend to check body shape. In direct comparison you should be able to tell once they are around 1cm length.
Yes to both. Yes you can keep them in a display tank and yes they are aggressive to each other. With enough space and line of site breaks a few of them can get by ok in a tank together.
great video, and sort of makes me think out of purchsing 10 fish from a local fish store- i may have one female, but the jurys still out.... I am going to go back to the LFS and see if i can just spend some time and look over what they still have and maybe find another possible girl...
What age would the fry start swimming around the tank like the adults? I have bred mine in a couple of my heavy planted tanks and wondering if I have fry.
Hi, fantastic video, thank you, how long did it take from eggs falling into the gravel until the last pictures of your video (you said half the size of the adult ) ? This is really interesting thanks for the great footage !
Hi, thanks so much. The ending imagery of the fry showed them at 9 weeks old and approaching the size of an adult female. I would say they are a half inch long
@@MakeMoreFish how long would you say it takes them to reach breeding maturity? I managed to find a female about 7 months ago, and was able to breed them. Only 3 survived, but one is a female for sure. Just wondering how long until I could start to expect breeding behavior out of this generation?
Interesting 👍. Have you tried looking in the tank with a flashlight when the tank and room are dark late at night. I’ve found that v useful with a lot of small tetra fry - particularly penguin tetra fry which seem to hunt for food when it’s dark…
yes, you're right it's very helpful to use a flashlight. I recently got a rechargeable pen light made for paramedics with a bright white and a dim yellow setting. It's been a huge help.
Got SUPER lucky and my LFS had a female in with their males. Was looking for some little fish to hunt extra RCS shrimplettes. Can't wait to see if they spawn.
Some people say that females can have stripes. I just heard it in a club talk recently. I still maintain that they don't. At least not red stripes. Only grey as shown here
@@MakeMoreFish Yeah turned out to definitely be a male. Bright red stripes. Just a sub dominant male trying to look female. Bummer is my LFS won't give returns or in-store credit unless the fish is dead.
Hey Man, have you tried breeding them again? Mine kept on laying eggs but can't seem to find hatchlings. I separated the parents after and still yet to find any... there were heaps of eggs so I am expecting a few swimmers but still none. Any pointers regarding fertility of the eggs? Like a ratio?
I have to ‘possible’ females and one male. The last couple of days he is breeding with both of them. One of them does have a little orange on the body. I thought it was a male but now I’m not sure anymore. Don’t know if sneaker males will ‘breed’ as well just for keeping the peace?
very tiny fry often develop in different growth rate between different individuals (from a same batch of small fishes like danio, shiners and maybe also badis),... only to give variation in real life. And it takes time...
Could you tell me where you got that divided/dividable Aquarium? I've seen a few online but it never says whether you can move or remove the dividers (and the compartments seem really tiny.) Were they removable in that kit you're using in this video? Thanks!

Again, maybe something changes at X years old but my point here is actually not to say that a female can never have any orange or red coloration. It is to say that for someone trying to pick out a female from a store tank based on it having the least amount of red compared to others, that will almost certainly lead to bringing home a subdominant male, not a female.

great info....
I'd love to purchase some from you if you're planning to sell. Especially a female since my male is so lonely by himself.
I've raised about five with succes in a community tank, catching the fry when I could see them. Later in a new setup zero succes, probably all females this time...
I realize this is an older video, but if you have any females left, I’d be very interested.
nice, top video bro !
Would you be willing to sell me a female?
So beautiful ❤
