Another way to get nice tannins for a black water tank without having the murkyness is put cork bark in. It leeches tannins out pretty quickly. You can just pin it under/glue to some wood/rocks to stop it from floating/to hide it. I think moving the rocket killis in to this tank would be great instead of the cardinals and neons as they're more muted in colours with some bright patches. Or alternatively a big shoal of Norman's lampeyes or one of the smaller African tetras
Ive never seen a youtuber struggle with floating wood on camera before and tbh it makes me feel better about my own struggles. That’s exactly how I’ve had to sink some wood recently
You need a black background if you are going to want them to really show color, you have light substrate light background. Itll help loads and make the tank look less hazy

I actually disagree. You're right when you say dark backgrounds can bring out the colour in fish. But I think this only applies in non-aquascaped, bare tanks. I find that having dark plants and rocks and botanicals is enough to bring out the colour in any fish, even with light substrate and background. It also really depends on the fish. Not every fish looks better darker (pea puffers are my fave example).

I love that MD doesn't hide all the challenges involved in setting up an aquascape. Great job showing everyone what's involved in solving problems like a buiyant driftwood! These fish are super exciting. I'm definitely looking forward to update videos as they get more comfortable.
An idea for those not needing immediately sinking decor: I once had a very large piece of malaysian bogwood that floated like a cork. I put it in a black trash can filled with water, put the lid on and let it sit outside in the sun for a week. The sun on the black plastic heated the water to the point it was too hot to touch, leaching out most of the tannins and thoroughly soaking the wood. After cooling for a day it behaved quite well in the tank and the tannin level was perfect.
I can attest to the amazing results from using API's Accuclear. I used it in my paludariums and it gave great results. But where it truly was game-changing was in my outdoor pond. The water became crystal clear, that helped spur plant growth, which helped the water stay clear. I used it 3 times in the first season until the plant growth made using it unnecessary unless I cleaned the filter pads, which stirred up some cloudiness. The balance of nutrients from fish waste and utilization of wastes in plant growth is often difficult outdoors. I eventually had minimal algae growth, mostly then eaten by the goldfish, and green water became a thing of the past. This year I began by harvesting excess plant growth and using it around my garden to shade plant roots as mulch. That and muck from washing the filter pads spurred growth in the plants around the pond!
Microctenopoma ansorgii! Very rare fish in Indonesia 😅 I applaud you and wish you luck in keeping them! PS. Please keep some a African tetras with them?

Remind me of paradise fish. Look up the Chinese paradise fish for some fantastic colors. Ctenopoma is one of the 1st fish I'm looking forward to keeping in a large tank. Didn't know there was a nano version.
You can train fish to come @ feeding time. I have got them to get excited with 3 light taps with a small metal object. Takes a few times before they all get the idea that means chow. New fish won't get it right away but they will when they see the chow line form. Kinda like 'Pavlov's Dog' , but with fish.
They're polar opposites lol. Father fish is all about making aquariums as close to nature and diy as possible, meanwhile this guy is a superconsumer of all the premium expensive goods the industry can sell to you, only makes contemporary designer aquascapes, and takes down his tanks every five minutes. I dont think they'd get along lol.
I love that fact that I am 20 minutes into this video and I still don't know what fish(es) you are making this scape for, and it doesn't bother me one bit.
They used to sell wood attached to slate back in the day. I used to mimic that when I would find large pieces without it or if I wanted to orientate the would differently
I find it so hard to believe that you’re so into Aquascaping but you’re not overly into fish. I thought doing one would make you enjoy the other for you the fish are just part of the decoration. Do you have any fish you’ve owned for years and are attached to I wonder? I know you’re fond of Timmy, but he’s a turtle😂
Microctenopoma ansorgii is not a Nanofish. That tank looks about right for a pair, without the Neons. But don't go smaller than that. Problem is, people associate "Nanofish" with tanks of 30l and less

There is a plant in the substrate in the bottom left-hand corner but off the corner to the right at 3:28. I hope someone also noticed.
MD, why don't you keep the stock wood you got there in a kid pool in the back with a couple air stones to keep them all waterlogged?
Your patience and persistence with that PC of wood is heroic level Id chucked the thing across the room lol
I thought exactly the same thing... 😂 it for sure would have ended up being thrown through a window!
I love you work but have to point one rather big change that no one saw... he glued the rock on the wrong side!!! LOL😅 Still looks great
Verrrry nice build MD
learned a lot from you. and love your
gentle humors
They look like a form of Paradise Fish .
great looking tank. you handled this well. i think i would have gotten too frustrated over the floating wood and rescaped
Remind me of paradise fish. Look up the Chinese paradise fish for some fantastic colors. Ctenopoma is one of the 1st fish I'm looking forward to keeping in a large tank. Didn't know there was a nano version.
That suspect botanical, too funny.
Love your work, keep them coming.
Süper Eline sağlık👍🇹🇷
I love this tank.
You can train fish to come @ feeding time. I have got them to get excited with 3 light taps with a small metal object. Takes a few times before they all get the idea that means chow. New fish won't get it right away but they will when they see the chow line form. Kinda like 'Pavlov's Dog' , but with fish.
Those Red Severums are where it is at. 24:40
Hi, they are called climbing perch for a reason, lookout for them escaping the tank
This is one of my favorites I've seen you do! Great video and great result as usual. 🎉
Would you consider teaming up with Father Fish for a completely natural jungle style tank?
They're polar opposites lol. Father fish is all about making aquariums as close to nature and diy as possible, meanwhile this guy is a superconsumer of all the premium expensive goods the industry can sell to you, only makes contemporary designer aquascapes, and takes down his tanks every five minutes. I dont think they'd get along lol.
Hi from Australia ❤
Beautiful job man, your tanks are stunning...
Said “unlucky buddy” to the moth but has an insect zapper right next to the tank ! Buddy didn’t stand a chance 😂
I love that fact that I am 20 minutes into this video and I still don't know what fish(es) you are making this scape for, and it doesn't bother me one bit.
Love to see a small shrimp tank, I have a 2.5 gallon tank. I was thinking of using for shrimp, could use some advance.
Such a cool fish!
looks like a chicken on it's back to me. I have not finished the video though and I have no doubt it will be a work of art (a good one)
18:36 that pod is a lotus seed pod
Very cool set up! I've never kept thees fish either but see them often where I am. Might have to give these a try
very cool fish
love the music on your vids!
What about a Brazilian Style aquascape MD?! I am curious to see how you would do that and I think that matches with your fishes style as well.
They used to sell wood attached to slate back in the day. I used to mimic that when I would find large pieces without it or if I wanted to orientate the would differently
My lfs still does
Hey MD are you still using filter media bags for your substrate? Do you still recommend it?
I was wondering that as well.
Can you please update Where are they now, or did you give them back with the move??? Love the new studio builds
🐢
Its such a pity that wood didnt stay put! The scape was very impactful visually at first
Microctenopoma ansorgii is not a Nanofish. That tank looks about right for a pair, without the Neons. But don't go smaller than that. Problem is, people associate "Nanofish" with tanks of 30l and less
I believe he mentioned they were going to get bigger, and need a bigger tank. eventually, or something like that.
Hi MD I’m a big fan
