- Wondering how to live in a small truck camper? Meet Will, who lived in his Toyota Tacoma slide-in camper by Travel Lite. By dropping his camper, he was able to get great MPG with the Tacoma as a daily driver, and have a great home for a week or two--then move on when his feet started to itch!! What a great life!

Thanks for watching!
Bob is the absolute source for good information for the full time camper.
Love this video. You can tell this guy is a teacher (yoga.) He communicates with real clarity and compassion. This video is several years old. Any updates?
Came across this older video and my take away is , he noted the help he had gotten from other people ,and how impressed I am with his power system.
Also, his choice of a Toyota is a good one , its reliability is legend.
Bob is such a good person. He allowed this man to be proud of all of his upgrades and his story when he knows we've heard it many many times but he let him have his happiness and praised him for his choices and I think that's so admirable. Another great video by a super sweet man 😊 Thanks Bob for sharing.

@@riseabove3133 Agree with you Bob only has a very few truck camper videos.
I'll tell you when you're deciding on what type of camper what type of vehicle what type of rig you can or might possibly own it's so important to hear about all the possibilities and all the intricacies of making the proper decision because you will be living with them.
@Hammerback0 interesting that you would talk about your 454 motor I've got a Chrysler I believe it's a 4:40 and I want to tell you this motorhome has many positive attributes but one of them was not good gas mileage I remember somehow spending $20 to go up a hill in New Jersey when I had little gas in the tank and I remember I put in $20 and when I got to the top of the hill there was no gas in the tank I mean you really got to understand that this home that you're going to use is for just getting somewhere and living in it and not to be used as a vehicle it's the price of getting to where you're going is a little costly but just remember the luxury that you have when you are stable and not driving it anywhere but again you got to weigh the costs
@Hammerback0 but by the way considering taking up the lifestyle could be one of the best decisions you've ever made in your life I was a ski bum in Colorado for 20 some odd years I went all over the West I skied around Utah mostly Colorado but having a motorhome was so freeing and so wonderful the day you take off on your journey should be one of the best days of your life
i liked hearing a guy say "this is my happy home for me"... it was very sweet and clear he was quite proud of himself for going solo and making this home just for him...
Exactly!
This good man really got me excited!! His ingenuity in approaching his basic needs and cares is inspiring
Thats all that counts.
These stories never get old. It's so interesting to learn how people adapt and tweak their situations. The basic message seems to be less is more. Happy trails and thanks for sharing.
I really like the way Will talks to the camera and the people in cyber land .
His teaching ability comes through nicely.
Bob, you are just such a good person and interviewer. I've been in the hospital the last month, I'm 34 and have Cystic Fibrosis - a genetic lung disease, and have always been a fan of your videos but have been watching them more routinely since I've had the time. Your videos, interviews, interviewees and advice are just so good. I've been wanting to hit the road myself for quite some time but because of the CF and being on disability it always felt like maybe it wasn't in the cards for me. But after watching your videos and being able to see so many people in my exact position who are able to do this and have this pride in their lifestyle and independence.. it's just really inspiring, dude. Thanks for doing what you do and helping keep the hope alive in me. It means more than you know
Keith, I hope you can find a doable situation to give you the adventure while dealing with your chronic illness!🌵✌🏽😎🇺🇸😋🌅
I have a chronic disease, also and we have had a travel trailer for two years and are going out full time next year, hopefully. I will be feeling the same if I am locked up at home or seeing the country. Carpe Diem!
😊
I love this video and have watched it multiple times! This man talks so precisely and is so happy and contented with his way of life. Would love to know his backstory. (Why he chose to be a nomad). But he clearly loves it. 👏🏻👍🏻
@susart7
Exactly.. I loved his precise talking too.. I loved him and he even had me laughing with the the bucket squat although it's so true..
Instead of watching a movie I always come to Bob's channel and get lost in an alternate reality of life. It's a REALITY SHOW in the true sense and organic entertainment as well. For those who live in the cities just try to see from my perspective, it becomes a move for you that's real at the same time.
My Dometic refrigerator actually works pretty well, I never switch to 12 volt, just use propane all the time. The freezer is very cold. In extreme conditions (like Burning man) i make ice in the freezer in stackable silicone ice cube trays and put it in tubs at the bottom of the fridge. When it melts, it goes back in the freezer.
I added some 12 v computer fans in the fridge which helps a lot. A secret to a successful use of a Dometic fridge is a thermometer so you know when you need to break out the ice.
Hey guys, just wanted to drop a line and say thanks for this video in particular, I was inspired a year and half ago to set up a shelter for myself starting with a 03 dakota, and a cheap truck cap, then later I picked up an old slide in truck camper, for $250.00! These videos help us all who are seeking a escape from the rat race, to not make all the sort of "rookie" mistakes setting up a self sufficient set up, and trade offs. I've been an OTR truck driver for almost 20 years, but I never really got to stop and just enjoy life on my terms. I've been Nomadic so long, I can't see not doing it this way. Love the videos, Love the info, and thanks again!
Thanks for keeping American great!
At least you know how to drive. I can appreciate that.
You guys are really motivating me! I got the truck, 2018, paid off only 22k miles, just gotta get the camper now
I have to pay off my truck too. I think with my luck is not a truck camper but a Mx full walk in door cap camper built my way.
I have watched multi-dozens of Bob’s videos, and was thinking that I needed to sell my ‘03 Tundra and get a van. I got a lot out of this video, and I am going to start looking for a camper that will fit the truck that I already own. Thanks, very informative.
That's a perfect shower system. I take an army shower inside my condo anyway. This is really no different from that. The camper actually seems too big for me. However, I appreciate the point he made where if you're stuck in the rain or cold you're going to spend a lot of time in there.
First watched this video 4 years ago, would love a fast forward update
Love watching and learning about this life style from different people. So fun! I am a simple person, this type of life fit me well🤣
This is one of the best tours and interviews.
I agree Deba! There are a handful of Bob’s videos that I watch again and again! I don’t even want updates on the people (nomads) because if they didn’t continue the lifestyle then it’s bursts the bubble that these pioneers cannot be slaves to materialism etc!
This was my very first Bob Wells video. This one really started me going with travel. I wonder whatever happened to Will. Love this guy.
This was awesome. Ever since coming across Carolyn and then Bob, the seed has been planted! Being a solo guy I have been contemplating the best rig for me. I do feel the Tacoma and the Travel Lite 690-FD would be the right one for me. Being able to lay your camper off the truck for mobility and as another viewer pointed out you can take the truck into town and use a gym shower. Congratulations Will and thank you Bob.
Thanks Rick!
There are numerous things to like about this camper. One thing I like, compared to others, is he has lots of head room in his sleeping area. That's a lot more comfortable than having a few inches above your head when sleeping above a cab.
Everyone said $1,300 was too much for a set of 5 tires for my Tacoma, that was @ 58,233 miles; My truck now has 229,000 miles and the tires still look great, the spare has never been on the ground. You get what you pay for, I always say it's better to fix it once than every six months.
Bob, great video! 0% drama, 100% information! lots of useful stuff here. Thanks. --Mark
Thanks Mark!
@@Neil-de1fh Bob rocks
Perfect rig.
What an absolutely fantastic video. Packed with useful information and presented in a logical and thoughtful manner. Thank you gentlemen for sharing your knowledge and insight.
Love this - he is well balanced
Well done gentlemen! Clear, straight to the point, fun to watch! Good luck out there!
Will has a great library in that little home!
I'm getting closer to my nomadic escape :) ...I'm currently a caregiver for my mother who has stage-5 Alzheimer's/dementia, in-addition to other ailments she's endured, which has given me the position for the passed 24 years(I'm 45 y.o.) ...over 1/2 my life. But once my mother is all taken care of, I'll be hitting the road, and getting myself some long overdue Me time.
This is the perfect set up in my opinion! Joan. Happy Travels!
Air bag suspension , 12v superior refrigerator... Great facts I learnt! And the shower is pretty ingenious too! Lol
That's just about the perfect setup for boondocking: very functional, convenient, comfortable, and it looks good too...
As Will said, it's a great setup for a single nomad!
It's not a bad way to go if you are by yourself! Make a great base camp for a trout bum like myself- Spend Spring Summer and Fall in the Yellowstone Area, then go down to AZ for the winter months, not a bad way to spend retirement!
Bob Wells...A reference name in the nomadic living!
Well done, Bob; as always!
Cheers!
Thanks Michael!
Thank YOU, for everything you do for us!
Many Thanks!
It's great when a perfect interviewee and a perfect interviewer combine.
I love Toyota Tacoma’s!
Lovepeacejoy I have been driving my 2008 RAV now for 10 years and hate to part with it as it is so powerful and has given me so little trouble only shocks and replacing the crappy tires it came with. But I am considering the options of pulling a small cargo trailer on the RAV or trading on van or truck and camper. I tend to want to stay with Toyota if within my budget. Glad to hear another 'vote' for the Tacoma.
@@Zippsters I installed a trailer hitch on my 2015 rav4. $100 and the wire harness was $35 and easy to install. Sucks the rav4 can only tow 1500 pounds though.
this guy is the best I've seen! he has everything down! energy, taking care of business, water, and versatility... respect!
Totally agree. For me this was the most useful interview so far.
The demonstration of how to squat over a plastic bag lined bucket is very informative. Good times...
Thanks for watching Phil!
He is correct about the squat being better for ease of elimination.
@@CheapRVliving man conserves water but is ok with throwing human raw sewage in plastic bags in the trash. And YOU didn't educate him on why that's not the right thing to do, nor is it legal.
@Steve/Beth Those bags you get for free every time you shop are biodegradable. If you don't believe me just put one outside in direct sunlight for a couple of months and watch it crumble when you touch it!
Is it any worse throwing human waste in the bin, than it is to throw dog waste in the bin?
I'm glad he likes it. I had a truck camper like this before but it was too small for my needs
I’m thinking of buying a small truck camper similar to this one. So thanks Will and Bob for showing me your solo set up. My main concern is livability and you helped address those questions.
I see you two went your separate ways.. it's wonderfully encouraging to see that a tremendous amount of mutual respect has remained intact.👍
A lot of mutual respect!
CheapRVliving When you said we will be waiting for you, it felt like I was being called home! I have set my intension to be at the next rtr.
9:55 - that whisper is the most heart-warming thing ever! lol
ahhh, the crowning jewel comment.
Lol, didn’t even notice 😂
👑
Very interesting lesson on the cold storage and I like how he still utilizes the precious space in the built in unit.
Excellent rig. I have a Tacoma and will use your advice.
Think about adding a cover over that fantastic fan. Then you can use it in the rain. Also, those covers fail sometimes when old. Its bad if it breaks when on the road and raining. A cover would give protection. They make a different cover for fantastic fans: Dometic U1400BLS Ultra Breeze Vent Cover
Nice set up!
what a dear little camper! you can take the truck into town and use a gym shower etc..fab!!
I agree!
This guy should write a book 📚
Lots of good practical info, thanks.
It's Nice to meet Will, and I wish him a wonderful journey, and Thanks Bob for the great vlog.
Thanks Katherine!
This is the rig (without the amenities) I wanted for so many years, although my dream was smaller with a pass thru window. BUT! It's too much for me. And I would have to get out of the cab to access the living area and vice versa to get into the cab to leave. Not practical or safe for an old lady. I love my van and put this out dated dream to rest. Great helpful information here. Thanks Bob and to the retired Yogi for opening his home 😊
Thanks for sharing Ellen!
i did 7 years with a Ranger with camper on back...solo....i fell broke my ankle and had get back to rat race..this video makes me wish to go back..
I did not realize that those smaller garden sprayers are a full gallon. I found two gallons will do it for me, but I prefer to end by pouring the last gallon over my head at once. I bought a three gallon sprayer, and it was too big for my space, so I returned it to HD. I am still putting a sauce pot in the stock pot of heated water and just pouring it over my head. Simple is best. I wasted money on a Coleman water heater that was lukewarm too often.
Thanks for sharing what works for you Laurie!
Great vid, Bob. Lots of info, thanx.
This is my favorite interview.
Great video and great rig. Greetings from North Wales.
This is my style. I grew up camping in river camps that only had a propane refrigerator and stove so I'm happy with a rig like this. My Coleman solar shower bag serves me well. Solar power is something I should try.
Thanks for sharing your experience Bobby.
The power blew my mind! Way to go!
This is a great video. It would be nice to have an update on Will and his rig and what he has been up to these last seven years.
I absolutely love this idea for winter camping! It will be my goal to get one of these over head campers!💗
This is the truck and camper I’m going to get! I love it !
Great interview- enjoyed his details. Toyota rocks.
I am seriously thinking about tacoma and a small cargo trailer for my bedroom.
Thanks. Cool guy. Has it together, peaceful vibe & nice dog.
Thanks for watching Terry!
Funny at 9:59 heard someone prompt this guy to say...... crowning jewel!
Used to have A Tundra, loved it. Downsized to a Tacoma thinking better gas mileage - wrong. Same gas mileage as a full sized Tundra loaded or unloaded, didn't matter. Tacoma has a 6 cyl engine, Tundra has a big 8 but the frame sizes and weights are almost the same so Tacoma is really working hard all the time, carries a fraction of the Tundra. I love Toyota, wouldn't get anything less because of reliability but sadly there are shortcomings to the Tacoma. I would rather tow a trailer behind than try and squeeze a camper onto a low capacity truck. No way that would be able to do any dirt or off road trails with a camper.
Yes, Bob seems like a nice guy on his youtube videos. Would like to meet him some day. All videos appreciated and a very nice way to see options and tahanks to all who allow us into their homes
We had a truck camper years ago for vacations with our two kids. Snug and cozy! This gentleman has lots of great ideas!
Yes he does!
This is a great video. So much information. This is more realistic than the idea of $100,000.00 for camping. Thanks.
Thanks Jim, you certainly don't need 100k to be a happy nomad!
Thanks Jim, you certainly don't need 100k to be a happy nomad!
That is what this out of hand capitalistic materialism does to enjoying the outdoors. It makes us think we got to be inside to go outside crazy huh! We have gone waco! And we think it is normal, we are the weirdest most complicated generation in the history of humanity too educated and complex to possibly enjoy anything.
@@chinojarjos Amen !! Ppl have gone totally insane with this buy, buy , buy !! We do not need any of the crap !!
@@tammywines9789 Hi Tammy, ( it isn't cheap but very cheap by comparison.)...a well planned light backpack setup, and going even just 2 miles into the wilderness away from the thronging crowds and I'm far happier than with anything else. Somewhere on a rock, with a tree and a bird, and a little stove for a hot cup of tea.
This guy is brilliant!
You do great videos! You always ask great questions and you let the other person talk! So many don't!
Excellent video. Will looks super healthy and a very wise guy. Yogis are great!
oh boy will forgot the script again... CROWNING JEWEL, will ! it's crowning jewel !
Thanks!
Really enjoyed this video. Love that you stuck to functionality and stayed away from decor as so many of the videos out there seem to drift towards. Very well done by both interviewer and speaker. I'm researching my setup for a tundra and came way with some great ideas. Thank you
That little brown dog is super cute btw
Yes it is, he is James dog!
I do too.
This is excellent! Thank you so much to all of you!
Very interesting!
The pure sine inverter/solar panel combo is pure independence.
Thanks for sharing and good luck.
This was a great, informative video! Perfect setup. And the owner explained everything precisely. He made it understandable. Nice rigg!!
Good video. About the solar. On the roof solar panels do not always catch the max sun. I have seen a bunch of the portable solar units that do well because you can aim them correctly. I am leaning towards having both. A panel or two on the roof and a portable.
That's true it's always a balancing act, interesting idea!
Bingo!
Thank you Bob.
Put it on a tow trailer so u can use truck bed camper. thanks for the video very informative thank u
Ceiling height in camper? Your height? Your weight? How wide are you? Length of mattress? Heat build-up from memory foam insert on mattress? Heat build-up in camper in summer?
This is a super great video thank you so much for making these videos, they are a wealth of information which is so very appreciated
It's my pleasure!
He seems very organized with his rig and his thoughts , he said he's a Yogi..I caught that ! Thanks Bob !!
This is a very good video Bob. Informative. This guy is doing very well and given me much to consider. Thankyou.
I love to hear that Aaron!
So 5years later, I bought a new Travel lite 625 in 2019 for my short box, (Canada $24,000 fully loaded, radio speakers inside out, lights inside and out, antenna) it's well within my payload but I make sure I keep stuff minimal, small and light weight. I service my differential, brakes regularly, good tires and air bags. It rides well. . I don't believe the Tacoma has enough payload once you add your stuff and water, propane, and solar. Razer SS is lighter and smaller more for a Tacoma. I opted for no wet bath model because of lower payload and got the portapotti in cupboard with outside shower. I use a pop up shower tent and sometimes the same sprayer he has. I rigged up a system to take a shower inside using a 24" vinyl folding dog pool (weighs 5lbs, folds up to 6" x 4) which has a plug a hose can attach to drain out the door. I don't fill the water tank for travelling it adds about 90lbs. I carry only a gallon of drinking water (with hand pump) and have no problem finding water or camping near a stream, lake or river dry camping. I only use the hot water tank on shore power. I use a Jackery with fold up solar panels (lighter, less maintenance than roof solar). I have an extra auxiliary battery under my hood with an isolator. I have enough power. I made insulated black out window covers. I have no problem with my 3 way Dometic fridge-freezer, heater works great. I do have a roof top Dometic air conditioner for shore power, but carry small USB fans for night otherwise (works). Took out the microwave. No awning (extra weight) but I found a small lightweight screen tent (works for bugs too!) I carry one burner electric Cook top and a 6" electric fry pan for shore power and a small fold up rocket stove (just in case run out of propane). I have the Coleman oven and a portable 2 burner camp stove for outside cooking, and I rigged up my own Omni stove top oven for in the camper (the actual brand is $150 CDN). Thanks to Bob and his many innovations/ ideas, plus many others!
Thankyou for discussing price really helps me decide what I can afford beautiful video
Just drove across country and stayed in KOA's in my pup tent. It was way more fun then hotels, but now I want a camper and the truck camper would be good for back country out west. My wife told me she WILL NOT CAMP - it's solo for me then. Thanks bearded guy for another great video review.
I am getting 18mpg highway and 16.5mpg avg. With a 08' 6.4l diesel in an f350 and 920 truck camper.
Great interview Bob. This fellow planed it out really well. It also helps when you ask for help and take the advice. Bob - in Pa.
Hello From 🇨🇦, I'm seeking the right rig for me as I type this then I'm on the road with my 🐶 I should have done this 20 years ago
Everyone says their one regret is not doing it earlier!
CheapRVliving yes I totally understand that, I have 2 ads in and researching all over Canada trying to get a rig for myself I'm not sure how it works if a Canadian bought one from the states.
A cottage industry type in British Columbia makes outstanding campers for pick-ups. They're even used for off-road ambulances. And get this -- they will not collapse in a roll-over.
Really like that shower sprayer tool for a shower....real nice💯💯💯👍🏼👍🏼❤️❤️
This was very informative. Thanks for posting.
My pleasure!
A great set up, the Toyota Truck (I once had one) is the greatest. Cody is so busy investigating his surroundings. Back & forth, so busy!! So Cute!!! Thanks for letting us all enjoy your videos.
hitchhiker Rv
Love Toyota trucks. I now have a Prius. My Toyota truck wasn't big enough but I see he is able to have a camper on his. That must be a 1/2 ton, so was mine.
The Tacoma is a great truck, but to be honest, I wouldn't put a camper on one.
I used mine to pull a 6,000 lb. travel trailer in near tropical storm force winds while getting out of town ahead of a hurricane. With proper sway control, leveling bars & hitch, my Toyota stayed true all the way! I had to do this at least three times over a five year period. I did not try to speed; drove like I had some sense; did not repeatedly change lanes; etc.
A number of people passed me pulling travel trailers with bigger trucks and amazingly looking as if they had simply put the trailer on the hitch-no sway control/leveling bars at all! The back of trailers were doing a dance-but you could not tell them they weren't at the motor speedway! Fortunately I didn't encounter that many of these fools on the road.
The point I'm making is the Tacoma is a good truck-even for towing-as long as one properly equips it; stays within its performance limits; and drives sensibly when towing big things like travel trailers.
Brian Berkes lmao!! I got the 1995 Tacoma 4 banger 2.7L with 93 Six Pack camper fully loaded 1100-1200lbs and driven 250k mikes. I Just double down on leaf springs and heavy duty shocks. Driven it in 40-50 mph winds, Soft sand and deep snow!! I get notes on it all the time asking to sell, but wouldn't sell for double the value since they're kinda rare and love the Toyota 4x4 camper setup. Some roads I go on would be too narrow for a full size camper.
@@CheapRVliving Bob, what is the smallest pickup you would recommend for a small slide in truck camper?
Love your small home. My dream life. I make decent money but I hate paying all the bills not have anything save. This is my dream life. Less stress live simple make more and save more.
I remember this vid from the other channel. Does Will hold yoga classes out there? It's been a while since I have done yoga, but I remember enjoying it. It's more of a workout than you would think 😎
Great video, smart commentary, but no toilet and no shower in the camper is a big minus for me. I know that the camper small size precludes it from having these key items, but there's got to be a better way.
Thumbs up... ENJOY.... THE SIMPLE LIFE
The first thing I noticed inside the camper was the banana. 😆
Hi nice to meet you! I love your video Bob.
Thanks!
Great video. Will is a good teacher too. Thankfully I am still able to squat if my "toilet" is high enough ( after knee injuries & being a bit older in my 79th year now ) .
At home I use a Swuatty potty stool . Practicing yoga regularly & walking keeps me reasonably flexible. Thanks for all the information in this video. I'm looking for a van to be able to travel & live as a NOMAD.
Great video Bob! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks Paul!
Really enjoy the channel very informative,Bob knows what to ask,Happy seeing everyone so proud of everything and they should be
I love this set-up - roomy, clean, comfortable! But shoot, I see one of these awesome tours and then can't decide which type of rig to get, ha!
So many rigs, so little time!
I keep bouncing around too. lol :D
I'm having a difficult deciding also. :)
I love it. Still can’t decide, like wendy, here!
Me, too! I keep changing my mind!!!
Bob, you better watch out, this fella may be aiming for your job. Nice interview.
Very nice video! Lots of info. Just so perfect for one person. The fridge, Will said it was a fridge/freezer? When he pulled the basket up, I didn't see where the freezer part of it was. Just wondered. As always, thanks for the video Bob!
It's either or, just depends on how you set the thermostat.
