@Patriot Jefferson Those van lifers weren't van lifers...they were city people with a city mindset and city spending habits traveling in a vehicle. Hitting the road in a class B is a bad idea, first hint they didn't know what they were doing. You can't go off-road in those so you have to stick to more formal campgrounds which cost money. If you are stealth camping in town, you have to move constantly so you use lots of gas or you pay to overnight park. Those people you watched were the wrong folks to base your assumptions on for this lifestyle.

Tacoma’s are the best vehicles for this type of living. I’ve owned a Toyota for the past 8-9 years. As long as you maintain them they will last! Nice rig!
I agree, these vehicles are really well built and can take the beating of trail driving without any issues. The dog bed for Sierra was a must, she loves stretching out in the backseat on long road trips between destinations! Have a great day ~ Brian
Re-: (Extra table near frig). How about mounting a table to the door? Either drop-down or flip-up. Drop-down could use a large wooden cutting board as the surface (essentially the exact size of your window). Use door hinges where you can more easily pull out the pins and make the table removable. Several “drop-down” bonuses: 1) Table will keep the sun from beating down on your cooler, 2) It’s an insulated window/privacy cover, 3) With the vehicle all closed up, you could deploy it as an occasional table/upper shelf when sitting inside (with fridge in a different location or outside). 4) It’s a hell of a lot more crowded everywhere else, while the high space between your fridge and the glass window is not being used.

You got a pretty cool setup there. Looks like lots of fun
Appreciate the unique approach to Brian’s set-up He marches to his own drum And very thoughtful field tested approach to every inch and every detail And Brian is always generous with the details of his rig Others definitely take cues from his rig and fluid set up over time- How much work if any to the motor tranny and drivetrain 🤔 at 300 plus And remote camping is what counts 🤘🤘 And traveling with his pup 🤙 Thanks for the upload !!!
Hey Finn, thanks for the kind words! Yes, I actually cracked the head gasket last fall in my truck so I dropped a Jasper engine in it and everything has been working great. I hope to get another 200K out of my truck before making a switch to something else. Cheers to remote camping, I love getting away from crowds. Hope your week is going awesome!
How I do it is to set up a tent to use as a storage shed. People think I sleep in it on the ground. Actually there's a twin size mattress in the bed of the pickup with heat and lighting. Can relate to the front seat being full of stuff. Mine has a shotgun, chest waders, blind bag, and a backpack in it with gloves and hats... Shotgun shells.
Very cool set up. I've learned a lot from how you're streamlining. The slider is terrific. I tried making something like that for a 97 Honda Odyssey. It was heavy, took forever to make but it was also terrible and marginally useful.... So thanks, you probably saved me making two more mistakes to get to something that works. I put a bunk in my Prius V (yeah I know you guys are now thinking 'wow!'). Works pretty good. I wanted to make it easier to recline the passenger seat. So I cut it off at the front support (which connects to the folded read seat head rest rods) and then reattached it with some 2" webbing so it can fold back. I cut slots and attached the webbing with staples underneath. Works great. The bunk is 1/2" luan plywood very light weight (Home Depot), supported at the front and about two feet from the back. I have two 1" stringers of luan glued and screwed (until the glue set) along the length (about 4" in from the sides) to make it stiff. Works great. You've probably already got this dialed in. I've built a lot of stuff, for precision baltic birch, for good light weight the luan, for rigidity, glue on a strip. The pine you used is good but more likely to cause slivers. the 1/2" is very flexible. For those angles, I'd probably just epoxy on a double strip of fiberglass, fiberglass tape would be neater, but always leaves a ridge at the edges. And it looks like your structure is already spruce. Spruce 2x3s are just terrific -- I like ripping them into different sizes while remembering the Wright Brothers built their gliders and first airplanes out of it. To keep laundry down, after two months kicking around Japan smelling like a sweaty corpse: I no longer travel with synthetics--they're cheap and great for growing bacteria. (The only way to get out a stink that won't launder is hanging them in strong sunlight for a couple of days. Turn them inside out.) I finally learned about wool (merino/smart wool). T-shirts and undies cost a lot more, but I can wear it for days with a tiny tiny amount of Gold Bond powder (GIs in Afghanistan and Iraq swear by it) I don't stink. And if I hang it up to air overnight I often can't smell the difference between the one I wore on a hot day and the one that is still laundry fresh. (Now when I drive through Yellowstone I can smell the Grizzlies in heat). For my windows I have these window screens that are like nylon stockings, they just slip over the whole door. I bought them on Amazon. They fit tight on my Prius windows so they might be too small for your truck. I'll spray my tent and those screens with 10% pyrethrin and those flies buzzing around will land on it, get sick and go someplace else. (I'm a bit up in the air whether it's okay to poison a bunch of critters that other critters will eat.) It would be easy to make slip over window screens from mesh from RipStopBytheRoll or some other place. I'd get the 600 holes per inch stuff. (I wouldn't use window screen, two layers of that would just stop too much air). The material is black so it helps with stealth. At night my stretch overs just look like tinted window glass-- a window rolled down a couple of inches isn't noticeable. Now if I ever pull into camp in my Prius, you can make a few jokes but you have to promise you'll tow me out in the morning. I once put a postcard of a sandy beach on my visor-- you guessed it, my Prius got stuck.

I really appreciate these videos. I have a lot of interest in this lifestyle, and recently bought an old Tacoma. But one of the things I really enjoy in life is the company of women. And you keep making it look like this lifestyle generally does not involve that.
Hey thanks so much for the comment! I'm glad you are liking these videos. Oh lived in my camper with my girlfriend Ashley for 3 months and it was amazing. I'll be doing a bunch of videos on that trip soon, just need to catch up!
Hey Chaos, this is a great topic to chat about. I've found meeting women while on the road is vastly different from a more traditional living situation. If you attend various van life meetups, hit up off the beaten path hot springs where it's primarily just camping, and join a few online groups of full-timers who are single then it's actually not hard to find female companionship. I've found that I can't really date a woman who is living a "normal' life since they always get mad at the fact I don't stay in one spot. I adjusted my perspective and now I'm only interested in dating women who either part-time or full-time on the road. Just started talking to a gal I met and I'm pretty excited about it.
Nice truck ,🤙🏼 One negatieve thing is the high lift jack on front of the bull bar ,it almost killed me when a car crashed in the back of my truck ,the jack attaches broke off and passed the windscreen...really bad day then ! Keep safe ,and rolling .
Hi Hugues, yeah I've actually been thinking about moving this to my roof rack for the exact reason you mentioned. If you don't mind me asking, where did put your hi-lift jack?
Hi , I Blok it in the bed of my truck (now I have a Toyota Tundra )and the car where it was put in front was a Mitsubishi shogun I think (because I live in Europe )and it has Pajero model as name . It is a heavy peace of equipment and keep it as low as possible ,because in that same accident my fire extinguishers has made a flight also and landed 30cm from my daughter on the motor hood of the 3e car that was involved in the crash. But I don’t live in the truck that makes it les important than in your case ,you need space to live in . And since that crash we didn’t traveled anymore due to children, but now I am building a off-road car military Peugeot P4 and it is actually a Mercedes G wagon . You can find it one Facebook “G klass or P4 “ it not nearly finished due to long term illness, but I am slowly building backup . And will be starting to travel again,my children’s are getting adults now. My advice is al that can travel in a car that does a 360 degree side rol due to a crash and is heavy ,more than 1 kilogram is a potential projectile. And a accident can be minor ore extreme, even when you are not the responsible for the crash. So it made me very cautious...but You live in it and don’t have the luxury to do exemption on space so that’s difficult. I hope you understand,my English is not so great . Therefore I like these kind of ideas and setups as yours. Keep safe and enjoy life on the move ,it gives you peace and freedom, that’s my second gaol! Se ya .
@@sssnipermonkey5566 yep. Long bed is 8ft. You could add a slide out like his and have nearly ten feet. Even the short bed tundra is a 6.4ft bed. Add a slide-out and you’ve got 8 ft or so.
Ok man what you have there with the slide out is a very good idea. Now what you need to do is make it a full length side out and go into business fitting them into all vehicles like I can see a full slide out in my Toyota van and that would double the size of the van. You have hit the nail on the head there man. You need to get on this now before ever one else hits on your plan. I am going to do this myself to my van. Thank you very much showing me this. Good luck in your travels.
Place a bicycle inner tube between bed cap and back window then inflate it. It works much better than rolling up a towel, and you can leave it there for good. Hope this helps.

Great video, if I could make a suggestion for you truck topper window to the truck cab, use a mountain bike inner tube, and put it in there to seal off the rain wind and light. I’ve done this on my Dodge Ram, and it works great. Using a small hand pump like for a soccer ball, will not take up space and easily inflated but won’t over inflate it either! Great ideas about the fridge/stove rear seat Mod but IMHO, you might want to consider cooking out back or away from your Vic as grease fires are no joke.
Yeah, that's definitely a concern. I had a situation my first year winter camping where I accidentally dumped a bunch of bacon grease down my leg and it melted my synthetic long underwear into my skin. I was in a snow storm during that time and couldn't get out of camp for 3 days. That was painful but necessary learning experience about how to be more careful while cooking. The most painful part was when I finally made it to the doctor and he had to scrap off all the skin...I thought I was going to faint. This was only on my right calf and top of my right foot...I don't know how people who have burns over most of their bodies survive. I have some pictures of my injury in this video I made last year if you'd like to check it out. ua-cam.com/video/NivQZLpJTPc/v-deo.html&t=
I've tanned a lot of rattle snake skins. You can drop the alcohol portion of your method as it not needed. Seems like it would have an adverse affect. I use a leather glove that easily rubs off the excess meat. Then rub on glycerin until it wouldn't soak up anymore and it'll come out vibrant and soft as a golf glove. Just FYI.

I'll probably roll out of here tomorrow and start making my way over to Camp Verde to chill for the weekend. I look forward to coming back to this area in January so let's be sure to get together again and do some more videos. Keep rockin' it, brother!!
Brian, I really enjoy your videos and rig! There are more expensive, more Gucci rigs out there, but yours is extremely well thought out and very organized with the space you have! Extremely capable, compact, low profile rig for sure. Dig it!
@@adamw4469 thanks man! I like to keep things pretty simple and enjoy building things myself to fit my style of truck camping. My goal is to always go as minimalist as possible so I can get to hard to reach places. I love living this way in a midsized truck as it allows me the flexibility to tackle really tight trails.
depending on the size of the table you want, you could make a table that folds down when the door is open. itwould leave the back seat area available for other things
I got a long bed. Made a 3 piece shelf system so I can out my bike or chair underneath or next to me. It's so small yet so sealed so it doesnt really get cold I been down to 35 all I had was a thin cotton sheet with my down jacket memory foam bed stays real warm. I plan on getting a dirt bike bumper rack. I backpack out of it very similar idea. I just have a duffel bag with clothes. Maybe way down the line I'll get solar and a fridge I already got an electric burner and toaster I use in my house.
I love my Tacoma. Now I have a back up plan if I lose everything I own.
Magical Hoof shit, probably more expensive to do that than to own a house and go to work.
Ray Ban how💀
Brian Smith insurance, gas, propane, truck parts, the tickets you would inevitably get parking in urban areas, food is difficult to store, employment above minimum wage would be difficult to maintain should I keep going
Brian Smith use your brain. How could it work without having an insane amount of money?
@Patriot Jefferson Those van lifers weren't van lifers...they were city people with a city mindset and city spending habits traveling in a vehicle. Hitting the road in a class B is a bad idea, first hint they didn't know what they were doing. You can't go off-road in those so you have to stick to more formal campgrounds which cost money. If you are stealth camping in town, you have to move constantly so you use lots of gas or you pay to overnight park. Those people you watched were the wrong folks to base your assumptions on for this lifestyle.
Right on Daddio 👍 well done

Love peace and axle grease brother.
Tacoma’s are the best vehicles for this type of living. I’ve owned a Toyota for the past 8-9 years. As long as you maintain them they will last! Nice rig!
Also love the dog bed!
I agree, these vehicles are really well built and can take the beating of trail driving without any issues. The dog bed for Sierra was a must, she loves stretching out in the backseat on long road trips between destinations! Have a great day ~ Brian
Colorado Backcountry Adventures really cool! Hope to see what else you do with the truck.
Shashika Tacoma’s are great trucks but if you’re gonna live in it I would opt for the Tundra. 👌🏻
Motown Sailor I just like the look of the Tacoma better but a bigger truck usually can do more. I could get on board with the tundra.
I was completely convinced that I was looking at Jack Black when your guy in the black came out
Re-: (Extra table near frig).
Hey Beth, that's a great idea! I'm considering a few different designs....haven't decided on what as of yet but I'll be sure to make a video and post it to my channel in the next week or two. Have a great day ~ Brian

Hey bud, I'm just an old lady watching your Channel. You got some cool ideas about you're cooking area you want to build. You might want to keep in mind that Greece and all kinds of spatters will totally trash the inside of your door and the back part of the front seat. You need to devise a way to possibly use a cheap tablecloth from Walmart that is plastic but you could maybe drape around those areas and not royally screw up your Tacoma. You got a pretty cool setup there. Looks like lots of fun
Appreciate the unique approach to Brian’s set-up
He marches to his own drum
And very thoughtful field tested approach to every inch and every detail

Colorado Backcountry Adventures Curious when you eventually move on to something else, what kind of rig would it be? -Greetings from Cali!
2 characters?
Yup, I certainly think so.
Have a blast you guys!

Awesome, I look forward to them, thanks.
Yes I wanted to ask that question without sounding like an ogre. I’m glad you framed it that way.
Nice truck ,🤙🏼
One negatieve thing is the high lift jack on front of the bull bar ,it almost killed me when a car crashed in the back of my truck ,the jack attaches broke off and passed the windscreen...really bad day then !
Keep safe ,and rolling .
Hi Hugues, yeah I've actually been thinking about moving this to my roof rack for the exact reason you mentioned. If you don't mind me asking, where did put your hi-lift jack?
Hi ,
I Blok it in the bed of my truck (now I have a Toyota Tundra )and the car where it was put in front was a Mitsubishi shogun I think (because I live in Europe )and it has Pajero model as name .
Se ya .

Buy a long cab Toyota Tundra.

I lived out of my car also...was NOT cool! But the freesom it afforded me at the time was pretty sweet. It got old though.
How long did you last?
