Awesome video, can't believe how much you have to take everything apart just to get to that internal ram slot... this video made it so much easier to swap the ram out for a 16GB kit, thanks!
We couldn't fit it on the back due to physical limitations. So we kept one on the back for easy upgrades. We don't recommend going above 16 GB because that is the highest Intel specifies. Anything over and we can't guarantee stability.
@@ASUSTOR_YT appreciate the response! Yeah I can definitely understand that there’s a trade off between having a smaller lighter unit, and ease of access to the internals.
I just have a question though, upon setup I noticed it defaults to RAID5 on the btrfs file system. Are you guys aware that in the btrfs documentation, they say that btrfs has known issues with RAID5 and RAID6 and they advise not to use RAID56 with btrfs? Apparently there are known bugs including write holes and potential loss or corruption of data on power loss!
@@MrCdub003 This is a general raid 5/6 warning and honestly, it doesn't really matter much unless you are writing to the unit a lot (aka more of a business use). RAID 10 would be preferable if you need redundancy and speed.
@MrCdub003 *ALWAYS* have any "data critical" devices connected up to a UPS (Uninterruptable Power Supply)!!! That said, I purchased a small Pure Sine Wave Cyberpower UPS that interfaces with the Asustor NAS OS via USB connection and will do a graceful shutdown within 5 minutes with zero data loss or corruption.
Great video, made the RAM upgrade very easy. Thank you for a great product and support!
Thank you for the video instruction. Mine went together just fine without any issues. Wishing you the very best;)
Ich finde das Video sehr hilfreich! DANKE!
Thank you for this. In the reassemble, 2nd to last step, you didn't show reconnecting the cable.
wow , what a great video , weldone !
Thinks! It's very helpful for my repairs!!
ha! I found this video after I figured out how to get access to the internal slot without breaking the NAS. (it was actually pretty easy once I committed to taking out the screws.)
Thank you for not breaking the NAS lol.
Question: What is the relative advantage of upgrading either RAM? For example, why would it be more advantageous to upgrade the INTERNAL RAM vs the EXTERNAL RAM? Or vice-versa?
It's not necessarily more advantageous. It's possible it just needs replacement in the future. The SOC supports a maximum of 16 GB.
what is the Maximum MHz of ram can i use in LOCKERSTOR 4 Gen2 (AS6704T)
I was trying to remove the piece at 1:57 and after removing the screw, still felt pretty glued on. I could not pull that sucker out 🤷♂
I had the same issue. I was afraid of breaking it as I was using more and more force so I stopped there. Only 12GB and no dual-channel for me at the moment.
Same issue here, it's fucked.
You can just continue and remove the motherboard instead. That board was stuck for me too somehow.
Make sure to take your hard drives out and it’ll pop out easy. If they’re still in it’ll be stuck.
@Ronnie.Ericsson @nickkroger2067 Thanks for the fixes, got it all sorted now
One question: is there any performane/efficient reason to have 16 GB in two separate memory card or 16GB in just one memory card replacing the original 8GB with a new at 16GB?
So: one is better that two or no differences?
One other question: I've been working with NAS devices large and small for a lot of years now, and while a couple of your competitors have seemingly stronger OSs, Asustor hardware looks significantly better. Plus...it's Asus, so I would expect low failure rates. My question is, when can we expect to see a level-up in the features/performance of the Asustor OS, like ZFS support, etc ? Because right now, that's the only thing holding me back from using them for a lot of my clients.
Asustor has nothing to do with Asus as far as I know
a min later edit: yep, their parent company is asus! hah, thanks for that info, would've never guessed otherwise haha
@@hariranormal5584 Nope. ASUS is not our parent company. ASUSTOR is an independent company structured as a joint venture.
Good video
Good video, Is there the possibility to install more ram than the 16gb (32gb).
Hi there. Intel's specification states that their memory controller can only handle a maximum of 16 GB. This isn't us being stingy, this is Intel's design. The NAS is not locked, but we can't provide support for NAS devices that are upgraded beyond 16 GB.
To me, it looks like you can swap it out without taking everything appart. Fine motor skills needed tho.
I'll try it on a Lockerstor 6 Gen2.
What is the stock ram in the asustor gen 2 6 bay so i can buy the same one for ths empty slot. Thanks.
Please check out our compatibility list on our site!
Just recieved AS6702T Gen2 from Amazon, purchased the suggested Crucial RAM DDR4 16GB 2x8GB upgrade. Installed both sticks what pain for the 2nd module. Fired up the NAS system only show 8GB. I am fairly certain the RAM was seated properly on initial install, but before I tear down the unit again wondering if the unit indeed supports 16GB RAM? Is there any other setup? One other item does it natively read external USB drives? I have an existing drive which has 6TB of data when plugged into the back USB port the NAS see's it only as being full I can't access the file structure. My old QNAP NAS accessed the drive without issue.
Figured out the External drive issue, needed to cycle the External Hard Drive On/Off button. Still interested in RAM thoughts.
Hi. Is this RAM part of our compatibility list?
Geez….next time make it so that both SODIMM slots are easier to access. This is insane!!!!!!
Hi. Given the size of the motherboard and the components used, it is not always possible due to physical or electrical limitations to put the SO-DIMM slots on the rear.
I read it comes with (1) 8GB stick, is it the internal or external that comes preinstalled?
@@mrenrique90210 Internal.
@@ASUSTOR_YT thanks for the quick response
I was thinking the same thing, I want to add more memory not rebuild it- FFS
Remember to remove any installed hard drives. If installed you cannot remove the hard drive backboard.
I like the hardware but the os. Can install this trueos or debian? Is it possible?
It's your pc, go for it.
Because putting the both ram slots on the exterior like on the previous models was too easy :-(.
A lot of the positioning of components has to do with signal timings with the traces on the board.
Does the Lockerstor 2 Gen AS6702T support WD Red Pro 6TB WD6003FFBX? According to the website, it seems that it doesn't, but maybe the information is outdated? It supposedly supports WD Red Pro from 10TB, and 6TB shouldn't be any different from 10TB except for capacity.
I bought a Yottamaster dual bay enclosure and it's a piece of garbage. The controller can't handle both drives being inserted at the same time so the enclosure completely malfunctions before disconnecting from my computer. It's also prone to corrupting the partition tables on the drives. They use a JMICRON chip. I'm going to give this storage unit a try because it also includes NVME slots.
Hi there! We appreciate your support! I haven't heard of Yottamaster, but it does not seem like they sell NAS. We sell NAS devices which are different than the DAS devices that Yottamaster sells. Our products are self contained and plug into a network for data access.
@@ASUSTOR_YT Oh, so I can’t connect this directly to my computer? I was basically looking for something that I can access directly as well as remotely. I store a lot of movies and music on my computer, and I basically would like to be able to access those files from different locations.
@@gunstargizmo That's right. It connects only through the network. There is no USB direct connection. You can still use it to access files as if it were directly connected over the network by setting up a network drive. It is easy to get set up, but I don't want you to buy our products and be disappointed. I'd rather give you the truth.
@@ASUSTOR_YT Could I use one of your NAS storage expanders as a DAS? Something like the AS6004U.
@@ASUSTOR_YT Basically, I'm looking for an expansion device that can store my music, movies, photos, art projects, and Steam library. I have good networking experience, but at the same time, I don't want to be going through a bunch of apps or settings to play a movie.
Thanks for the great video! I just bought one of these after drooling over NAS's for 10+ years. Just a heads up, I'm not gonna spend $90/stick for "compatible" memory. It would be better if Asus maxed out the memory as a standard and charged $100 more. I got two sticks of 8GB RAM from Kingston for $70.
Hi there! We are not ASUS. We are ASUSTOR. A separate joint venture. Also, we don't lock down the NAS. You are free to install any memory you like. We also have a compatibility chart on our site for people who want to know what types of third party DIMMs we have had the chance to test and verify.
RAM wise you can report what RAM you found compatible and they'll add it to the support matrix
I tried RAM that wasn't listed and an NVME that wasn't listed and they both worked...I submitted the request as well to have them added. Better to add your own of what you want and you can do it cheaper.
Ive just got as6704t and probably will returna asap, as cannot add my own 10Gbe card without removing ssd controller card, I cannot see from this film second slot for second card to have both ssds and 10Gbe cards, or I am pushed to pay extra
Hi there. We sell a 10GbE card with M.2 slots for NVMe SSDs.
My unit does not match these instructions!
Hi! Do you have a Lockerstor Gen2?
@@ASUSTOR_YT Yes? My unit has a power supply. The unit in the video didn’t have a power supply. I couldn’t follow the instructions for this reason because there were additional screws that had to be removed.
Use better screws... The ones on mine aren't deep enough and are way too tight and they are stripping when I use any type of screwdriver... This is a terrible design
Had no problem with mine.
@@acidfly1 I must have had the b team picking my screws... The depth of the grooves were almost flush with the face making it near impossible to get the Phillips head in and made it strip trying to turn it...I tried 4 different Phillips drivers, all the same results. Glad it worked for you but mine was a complete mess.
I am facing the same issues which screw driver works for you?
@@mani1098 unfortunately I don't know the brand... I've had it for years and can't remember where I got it...I tried a few before I found one that only slightly worked...I had to put a lot of pressure into the screw to ensure it didn't slip off, if you know what I mean. It's a pain in the ass for sure... Good luck
I am curious as to what size Phillips screwdriver is required to get the accurate fit@@CurtisMacAulay
Why can't upgrades be made easy?
Hi there. We're a bit confused. We do provide easy upgrades by making the rear slot easily available to upgrade from 8 GB to 16 GB by purchasing another 8 GB SO-DIMM.
@@ASUSTOR_YT Yeah, but any random 8gb stick would result in two single channel modules instead of the memory running in dual channel. We either need to know what's preinstalled (which you don't disclaim, so we need to access it) or we need to replace both.
2:06 Good fucking luck.
Just continue and remove the motherboard instead. That board was stuck for me too, but you don't have to move it.
sorry, but the internal slot upgrade procedure is a joke ...
