If you have purchased a new NAS Drive in the last few months, then chances are that you would use it to the best if its abilities increasing the memory to the maximum in order to run more apps and allow more users to access the device at any time. The latest 2020 Generation of Synology NAS (the DS920+, DS420+, DS720+ and DS220+), much like the older gen devices, all arrive with the ability to upgrade the memory to 8GB, but some users like to push this limitation, using unofficial memory from brands like crucial or Kingston, installing bigger and faster memory. Generally speaking, Synology NAS has a long-standing reputation for being underpowered when compared to brands like QNAP and Asustor, at least out of the box, choosing to focus on their award-winning DSM software. This is changing a bit in 2019/2020 with the newer Synology drives featuring improved hardware choices, but still, for many, it seems a little underwhelming. One potential benefit that’s highlighted to improve performance considerably multiple users is to upgrade the RAM (Random Access Memory) in the Synology NAS drive. Today’s post will cover my thoughts on the usefulness of upgrading the factory-installed RAM, how to determine if a RAM upgrade is needed at all and exactly how to do this. Let’s start with the latter, do you need to upgrade RAM?

I just upgraded mine with a 16GB memory and absolutely no problems whatsoever. Also put in 2 1TB Nvme cache memory sticks and no problems either. I have a 1 Gigabit router and switches and this transfers at the 108 MB -120 MB rate, which is 864-960 Mbit. Even though this is fast, it now seems slow compared transferring internally to a raid in my Mac with a raid controller card. I did bond the two ports for the heck of it, and bonded the two in my Mac. Really does not make a lot of difference.
I did try the 4Gb first, and then the 8GB, and now the 16GB. No problems with any of them.
Now I think I might expand with the dx517 to get the number of disks I need.
My mac has three 8GB disks in Raid O, so I probably will do this as a Raid 5 for storing and backup.
This is where the 2.5GB Ethernet might be nice, but then my backbone LAN would have to be, along with the router. And then all my computers and storage devices.

About your advice "MAKE SURE to check that the memory module (especially 16 and 32GB SODIMM modules) are DUAL RANK or ‘DR‘", since most 4GB/8GB memory modules are available only in SR, do they have trouble with DS220+/920+ series? Are 4GB/8GB mostly ok if it's within the official memory upgrade limit?

I hope they move to AMD mobile systems or ARM soon and we get 64gb memory. All for the same price. Memory power consumption isn't going up a lot if the slots are not increasing. So 16gb or 64gb doesn't matter and it only costs $4/GB

sorry if I'm going over old ground but have a question regarding 8GB crucial memory upgrades on a 920+ (couldn't see a video for the 920+ to comment on)
On one of your recent site posts, you suggest a number of memory modules that will work - one of which you recommend single rank for 8GB..
Yet in another post, you state you should ONLY use Dual Rank memory as a single rank can cause issues.
Is this only with the larger modules (which other users on Reddit are now seeing small issues with).
Are you able to make this a bit clearer as you currently suggest either are fine but single is bad..>TIA
