    Just a friendly reminder by someone from the I.T. industry to always back up your important files in an off-premise cloud as well such as Google Drive or iCloud. Things happen. Having your super important files on at least 3 locations where at least one is off premise ensures you don't lose data that was one of a kind.

I have like 470 gigs of my one terabyte space on OneDrive used up, and 90% of that is photos and videos from my camera and phone. @@PatrickRambles Then, I fear, I would not buy it. PCs running Linux would make a much more practical NAS. Or FreeNAS.. One of our offices fell into that trap recently, when the office NAS died, taking with it a great deal of crucial data. They didn't have another copy, thinking that if it was on the NAS, it was "safe." I spent many hours trying to recover the data, got some of it, but unfortunately, the NAS took a couple of crucial folders with it when it died. Bye-bye. A NAS needs backup too.

    • @PatrickRambles
      @PatrickRambles  Місяць тому

      100% a NAS needs backup. And yes there are much more open options like building your own. I think this NAS is built for people who want the benefits of a NAS but don’t want to dive deep into it. It’s almost plug and play.

    • @NathanGregoryAuthor
      @NathanGregoryAuthor Місяць тому

      @@PatrickRambles Agreed, and there is a place for it. But what bothers me about this is these inexpensive standalone NAS systems create a trap that unwary, or unknowledgeable users can fall into all too easily, thinking that if they have a NAS, they are safe, or that a NAS is a replacement for cloud storage. The very title of this video propagates that idea, and that is simply false. A single NAS is NOT a replacement for cloud storage. You need multiple NAS, cloud storage or some other means to backup the NAS. That's my objection, my point, that the video propagates a false sense of security, implying that a single local NAS is a viable alternative to an off-site storage system of some type. It isn't, and by definition, cannot be. I have a NAS, and I use it. But I also have cloud storage, and, frankly, quite a lot of it. The cloud storage backs up my NAS, and my NAS backs up the cloud storage. Yes, your cloud storage needs a backup too! Just because you have iCloud, or G-Drive, or OneDrive does not mean you are safe. While rare, cloud storage does fail too. Simple human error can cause loss of data stored "safely" in the cloud. If you have ONE copy of a file, then you have ZERO copies.

    • @PatrickRambles
      @PatrickRambles  Місяць тому

      @NathanGregoryAuthor I don’t really see how my title propagates this. I compare NAS storage to internal Mac storage, not cloud storage. It goes without saying that important files need more than one backup.

    Yes cloud storage cost is horrendously expensive; however the biggest pro for cloud storage is that it is off site. Therefor if for some reason your home/business were to encounter a catastrophic event (like fire) your data is safe off site. So how do you addressing this using NAS?

    • @PatrickRambles
      @PatrickRambles  Місяць тому +1

      Most NAS systems come with cloud backup. If never recommend keeping all you data in one place. With that said, I was referring to the price of internal Apple SSD, rather than cloud storage.

    Hi! I'm confused about Ugreen's max storage, THIS 22T*4+4T*2 thing cofuses me. I have a quick question if anyone may happen to know it; it would help a lot so I can get the NAS before the Kickstarter ends.
    Would I be able to use the 4 bay plus version with 4 of these HDDs (Seagate Exos X18 18TB Enterprise HDD)? My budget is short so I would be buying one at a time. No backup up necessary, I just need external, server-like storage and when one drive starts to decay I will put another and copy everything there. Thank you

    • @PatrickRambles
      @PatrickRambles  18 днів тому +1

      Hey Andrew, it means you can add a max of 22 Terabyte times 4 plus another 4 Terabyte times two in the form of NVME SSD. I run 4x18TB ironwolf drives and they run very well (and loud 😂). I understand the cost issue and you can populate the bays one by one, but since HDD drives can also fail suddenly, it's risky not to run it in a RAID configuration.

    Hello! I have a question. I’m planning on ditching google photos and get myself one of these.
    My question is : since you can create user profiles. If two different users backup their photos, will they be stored in the same photo library ? Or will each user have their own ?
    For example say I have a 100 picture of a dog and my wife has 100 pictures of a cat, when I open the photos app. Will I see 200 pictures under my account ?

    • @PatrickRambles
      @PatrickRambles  22 дні тому

      You can create folders and assign them to different users. You can set it up so that only the user has access. The roles every user has are customizable.

    The more logical solution for me would be not buying an Apple product at all. My Windows notebook came with 1 TB of storage and two years later I added another 2 TB for just around 120 Euros. I might replace the 1 TB module by a 4 TB module one day. That is so convenient. Of course I could also use external storage, but I already use external storage for backup.
    Apple pricing is an insult to its consumers. It should not be possible that Apple uses the fact that the storage is soldered to the board against its own consumers. Consumer protection in the US leaves a lot to be desired. US authorities usually protect the interest of companies, not the consumers.
