I do not understand how this channel doesn't have more subscribers. I've been watching a ton of your videos lately and your consistency with the reviews and tests makes things very easy to compare.
Just came across your channel the other day and I just want to thank you BIG TIME , you convinced me to buy a SHURE SM7B and was in fact wondering if it would work with the Rode A-1 interface I already own , I do voice narration for a living on my channel and your videos have helped me out big time! :)
Your info saved us hundreds of dollars if not even more we're building a broadcast studio The Host internet radio network and our owned live talk shows! The fact is we even bought some of the wrong equipment to be seen some of your reviews returned it and got all the right equipment I will not talking this a little equipment we're talking thousands and thousands of dollars worth I want to sincerely thank you for what you do you seem to do it better than anybody else keep on rockin
Thank you very much for letting me know this. Sometimes it feels the only feedback I get from people who buy gear is "it's broken, help", so it's always nice to hear that these videos have helped someone, especially helped you save some money! Kick butt and have fun with the radio show. Best of luck.
Apart from a great easy to follow explanation on the Rode I like the fact that you don’t ask viewers to subscribe or like your clip before they’ve actually watched it . Cheers for going to he effort to help others make a more informed decision.
Everyone's bitching about $130 for one channel but imo it's fine. It's got most of what I want from the Zoom H6 minus the crap I don't need, what seems like much cleaner amps, and everyone gets their own box to control. Considering how nice it sounded probably can save money not getting a Cloudlifter as well, seems fine at the price point. I don't need 4 channels, may never need 3, I'd rather me and a friend each get one of these and a decent dynamic mic for now, clean audio podcast with room to expand when needed:) And it looks cool too, sick of all the ugly looking podcast gear lol
Had no idea Rode made interfaces, and this one is actually really good; if I was buying my first interface again I would have bought that one given its performance. You're also amazing at guitar. Great video.
For this being only a single channel interface, it's ridiculously good for what it does. The simple and sleek design was what won me over. On the expensive side, but it's still a great interface for a beginner, IMO. I have no regrets buying one.
Nice early review and my favorite test, the SM7b grind. Shocked with only a 45db preamp that it drove it to 9db at 90%. Not sure how that’s happening but damn. And I skip the music tests, just cause I don’t play, but that riff was epic, I backed it up twice;)
Yeah I was surprised by the sm7b test as well. It's important to note, that's not consistent -9dB, that's the peaks. And I'm also a really loud talker.

Just to be completely clear Podcastage (since I had the same observation as Ray): did you perhaps have a Cloundlifter or Fethead connected with the Shure SM7b? Obviously you wouldn't do it on purpose, but perhaps it was already connected, because you normally have it connected. If not, then it is likely that RØDE may have underrated the published gain spec, as RØDE did with the i-XLR (to my knowledge, RØDE's only prior preamp/A-to-D, for iOS only). When I pressed them, they gave me the real gain spec for the i-XLR, together with a detailed explanation, which I quoted verbatim in my review of the i-XLR. I too received my AI-1 unit and will publish my review soon in ProVideo Coalition. Maybe I'll find someone to lend me an SM7b. Otherwise, I'll use one of the dynamic mics I have here. Great job as always Podcastage.
Man, I was not expecting that audio interface to be able to properly drive a Shure SM7B. Excited to see if Rode steps it up and comes out with an interface that has two channels and is still affordably priced. Some other audio interfaces to possibly check out. Presonus Studio 26 - This one is pretty new, so I haven't seen many reviews yet. What attracts me is it has 70 dB of mic gain, much higher than most entry-level interfaces. Costs $199. I wonder if the gain is clean, though. Especially when it's cranked up to the max. Audient iD14 - This one just looks really well made. Feels like they cut no corners. Although it's more expensive at about $300. Has 66 dB of mic gain. This had been my top choice, but when I saw the Presonus was $100 cheaper and has a little more mic gain, I've hesitated. Yamaha MG10XU - This is actually a mixer. I've watched some good reviews of it on UA-cam, but would love to see it go through Podcastage tests. Thought of using this for livestreaming and podcasting, if you want to mix in all your sounds as you're recording. The tech spec sheet PDF I found online was kinda confusing. I think this has 64 dB of mic gain, unless I read it wrong. PSA: the 6-input version of this Yamaha mixer is cheaper but does NOT have a USB port, so it can't connect to a computer. The 10-input version (this MG10XU) or above do have a USB port. The "Standard" versions don't have "Built-in Effects" and are cheaper, but I think the effects are the fun part. If you do more reviews of audio interfaces, would love it if you continue to have tests with the Shure SM7B. It's nice to know if an audio interface has enough mic gain handle that microphone, even if you're not planning to buy it now. So that you can later upgrade to the Shure SM7B or Electro-Voice RE20 without having to buy a new interface or something like a Cloudlifter. Gives some future-proofing. Thanks for all your hard work.
Bought this and was happy in the beginning... Then it started going crazy. There was a screeching sound coming through the earphones a couples times so I stopped recording with the sound monitor on. Then it stopped so I was like "ok cool...". One time the mic was just not responding at all and just now, I recorded a few voiceovers and there was a buzzing sound in the background (for no reason at all). Sending that shit back today!
Have you considered doing a Scarlett vs Rode comparison? I want to buy this kit, but do you know if there is any sound quality difference between this and the Scarlett? Other than the low noise floor?
I'm On Social Media USB microphones do not need this interface as a much simplified version is built into them. This is an interface for use with professional microphones.
It's interfaces like this that please me. Strong & simple and with low noise but, for some reason, that often comes at a high price. It would be all the better for having 2 channels and independent controls. Get to it Rode!
Rode is good stuff. I'm a podcaster who owns Rode products and wants to move from USB to XLR microphones...This is the erasy solution I've wanted. I'm buying mine today
Thank you for this wonderful demonstration. To the point, beautiful montage, great information! You are the reason I bought this audio interface! I paired it with an audio technica mic. Tip: practice lower pitch voice, more relaxed(e.g. how actors speak). I find it unnaturally high, rushed and pretty hard to bear(like screaming). Btw you are an awesome, awesome musician and your guitar piece had me going in full pleasure mode
-128dB input noise floor is unheard of at this price and up to $400 (I think the TASCAM UH-7000 has comparable specs, then you have to step up to $2K). Other interfaces like the Focusrite 2i2 are at least 20dB more noisy. OTOH the Rode has a single entry and quite large latency so I guess for the occasional time one wants to record both voice and instrument, you could complement it with a Behringer UMC22 or something like that.
Podcastage hello podcastage i need help with some cables i have an interface is called behringer Umc22 what kind of cables should i buy for the headphones and also for the monitors

I'm not really a musician, I'm not an audiophile, I barely have a need for even the cheapest microphone and interface you've reviewed. But I get a huge kick out of these videos and I love cool gear. I really glad I saw this video, I was initially going to buy one separately as I assumed it might have been poor quality but it sounds like it's pretty good and perfect for my needs!
Hey you, yeah..you! I think I binged all of your videos last night and just wanted to say thanks so much for your time and reviews. After everything was said and done, I purchased this bundle. I'm a teacher and the old webcam - 20$ mics just aren't cutting it anymore. I learned so much and realized that for the past decade have been making the biggest OOF ever - converting the XLR to fit into the mic port of the motherboard. I feel such shame and now know why all my recordings are trash. You made me feel the shame. I will eat stickers now., Subbed just because you play all those guitars.
hey there buddy, since you own this thing and have had about a year of experience with it, can I ask you a question? I'm upgrade my setup, getting a rode podmic as microphone which I know works well with the AI-1, rather I'm wondering about the headphone output. I would like a one box solution in a sense. I'm getting a pair of beyerdynamic DT-770 Pro 80 Ohm headphones for all round use. Do you think the AI-1 will perform well for me? does the headphone out on the AI-1 work as a passthrough for all audio on the pc or is it just for mic monitoring? I'm new to the audio scene so sorry if this is an arbitrary question and I've just misunderstood what's been said, I just want to avoid buying an amp just for the headphones if I can. Thanks in advance!
@@Domikers Hi! Yeah, I used this for quite a bit but in all honesty, it's too much of a bother for what I'm doing now. The Mic and Pre-Amp work great for video for recording, but for livestreaming I went and got just a logi headset/mic combo. I'm not 100% sure of a podmic or what it is, usually people need a preamp like the A1 in order to give the mic enough power, just plugging it into a PC etc, just doesn't give it enough juice. The headphone passthrough (for me) worked for all my audio and I use a set of ex-29 extreme isolation - once you have your room set - you shouldn't have to adjust the levels unless you change up your room. Anyway, I hope this helped. For me I still use the mic and amp for recording listening exams for my students. when streaming though, I opted for just a BT headset/mic.
@@CReese-os8fc thanks for the response mate, it's certainly helped me make my decision. And a podmic is a microphone rode came out with, very affordable and better sounding than any mic I've ever owned
@@Domikers I brought this mic back out because honestly - its sooo much better than a headset mic. Now I'm running off a Rode PSA 1 Swivel Boom and also a desktop mount. The thing that I've found is the MOST important - that POP filter is kind of big and ugh, so I purchased a rode WS2 wind shield and it looks so much better and even better performance. Good luck!
@@CReese-os8fc That's the exact arm and wind shield I have! The setup works great. I've since hooked up and older Behringer Eurorack MX1602A (mixing board) which gives me more control and the option to hook up a few instruments. I ended up going for the Focusrite Scarlett Solo 3rd Gen for DAC/AMP. So far I've been very happy. There's no way I can ever go back to a normal USB mic or a headset. Same for the audio quality I'm hearing myself with the DT770 Pros. Creating or consuming any kind of media or entertainment is a way better experience! Hard not to recommend to everyone.
Well, if my 2i2 ever dies, I now know exactly what I'm going to get to replace it. That amount of gain and almost-no noise? That's simply unbeatable. Those Australians do it proper!
The audio sounded a bit wonky for the first half of the video but sounded much better afterwards, honestly for $130 I would pick this up and maybe an nt1a, sounds amazing, not as bright as the scarlett but still great.
Hi, I am planning to buy Rode NT1 complete studio set which includes the Rode AI-1 audio interface. The one offered in Amazon. Basically, the RODE AI-1 is for USB port devices like laptops and PCs. But my objective is to use it on my Iphone (IOS) particularly for the "Smule Sing!" App, it is a popular Karaoke app offered on smartphones. I have already found solutions on how I can connect it on my Iphone. I have searched on all the things I need in order to make it compatible with my Iphone. Rode AI-1 is powered from USB-C to USB-A. I have found out from youtube videos that I can connect it to my Iphone through an adapter, the Apple USB-A female to lightning male adapter. It works perfectly fine based on the videos and tutorials. But I have been searching on lots of reviews and I cannot find answer on this very crucial question. Based on the reviews, I am aware that the audio coming from RODE NT1 mic will come out to the Rode AI-1 audio output, the one on the right side where I will put the quarter inch audio jack. Now my question is, can I hear also from this output (Rode AI-1 quarter inch audio jack) the background music coming from my Iphone? I mean, the "Smule Sing!" app is supposedly a Karaoke app where I will be listening to the background music provided by the app while I am singing using the RODE NT1 mic. Now, I am worried if I can hear the music from that "Smule" app and on the same time, the sound coming from the RODE NT1 mic? I'm sure I will hear the sound coming from the mic but I'm not sure about the sound coming from my Iphone's "Smule" app. And I have the same question as to my laptop because if I will record a vocal with a music coming my laptop, will I hear that background music coming from my laptop? I hope I can get an answer from you. This is the only issue that prevents me from buying the set in Amazon and until now I cannot find an answer on it. Thanks and best regards,
Great review. Just received the beautiful black box package from RODE direct as well. In the process of filming a review as well. Did yours come with the USB stick and Rode pins as well?
No worries. I am assuming the retail kits will not come with them like our review kits did. I am mentioning that in my video. Then again, you never know, maybe they will. Did you check out the USB? Great promo material on there. PS Love the channel. Check out some of my stuff if you get a chance.
over a year late but, imo, you sound better through the AI-1 than your scarlett 2i2 I was watching this in comparison to your nt1 v nt1a video. You sounded more natural here & more artificial on the 2i2.
That is a very clean sounding interface. But for the $130 price tag, it is a little steep only having 1 input. If it were 2 inputs for that price I would jump to get one. There are plenty on the market that sound close in quality, but have 2 to 4 inputs for the same price. When it comes to the kit I agree that the price being equal to $80 is much more desirable when added to the microphone.
Thanks so much. I actually have a demo done of it and a few other metal songs, just haven't released them. Maybe I'll put some videos out with those songs.
I've learned so much in your explanation. I actually bought one and I kinda wanna connect it to my dslr camera. should I connect it through the headphone jack (using 6.35mm TS to 3.5mmTRS) or to the speaker jacks (using dual 6.35mm TS to 3.5mm TRS)? I am hoping for your response.
did you notice 2 tiny pops while turning the gain up? one is at about 40% and the next is at about 65%. As if there were 3 discrete gain stages. I experience the same on mine
I just got this a couple of days ago, and I'm not happy with it. For one, I tried to register it for warranty purposes and because paper work that came with it says you can redeem a free Ableton Live Lite after registering. But the web site is crap, as it wouldn't accept the information I typed in. So if the web site is crap, and one of two knobs on it broke after just one day of use, I certainly would not recommend it.
It's been on my list for a while. I'm slowly collecting a lot of the large diaphragm dynamics, but they're so expensive I just need some time to collect them all before doing the versus series.
Dude you totally rock those riffs were vicious absolutely loved them and thanks to your videos I now know not to buy blue spark blackout just instead I am going to pickup nt1 kit I use Rolland duo capture interface should be ok right?
Hey Podcastage - if I'm set on buying the Rode NT1 mic, would you still recommend that I get the kit covered in this video, or should I buy the NT1 separately and pair it with a somewhat superior audio interface, like the Scarlett Solo 3rd gen?
Hey thanks for the review, I just got it and it arrived doa until I did a firmware update. Have to ask what is your setup for the guitar distortion? That was the highlight for me :)
Hi, you're the best. I have the id4, but i love the smaller form factor of this Rode interface, and i would change only for this, but the sq is still my first motivation, so this has to be almost equal on that regard. do you think the preamps are similar? and is the hp pre better than the weak one on the id4?
Some people are saying this has stability issues with drivers and may in some cases inexplicably die. I was surprised to hear this, generally Rode makes great stuff. Has anyone had that experience with it?
i'm not sure if you're able to help as this is quite an old video, but my setup seems to need the gain to be at least 70-80 to get good audio levels. is there something wrong with my unit? because my area is fairly sound treated but could be better for sure. I just feel like it should'nt have to go that high based on all of the other videos i've seen on this mic setup.
Thank you for the great review! If you have to choose between this and Focusrite Scarlett Solo, which would you choose and why? Thank you for the help in advance!
Hey bro. Commenting from the Caribbean. With reference to the rode audio interface, you mentioned there are other options at the same price point, that offers cleaner preamps. Can you list those other options for me please. Thanks
Young Chang All USB interfaces require some computer application to use. A compliant device like this one will work with virtually any software, from very simple and free applets right up to the most advanced DAWs, with the possible exception of a very few proprietary systems. If you have a computer with USB connection, you will be able to use this.
The reason I don't do that is that everyone processes differently. Everyone will add different eq, different compression, etc. So it will only be showing how it sounds when I process it.
Hello, thanks for your videos, I have a question to buy a microphone and I see that you have experience in these microphones, rode nt1 (black) vs nt2a, I do not care about the polar patterns or pad of the nt2, I will only use cardioid, but strictly adjusting to the sound quality you see best. Which gives you more sound quality, which would you buy for you?
Which is better - this or the Behringer UMC2404 hd? I've spent all day watching your videos, and they have been super helpful. Now I need to decide what to buy. I am thinking Rode NT1a mic and UMC2404 interface. But I only need one input as it will just be to record vocals for voiceover work. I don't have a lot of money but I don't want to buy so cheap that I regret it and need to get better equipment a short way down the line. So I guess I'm asking, does that sound like a good combination for what I want or would you suggest a different combo? A different interface or mic? Thanks so much, Ella 😊
Hi, I'm wondering if you could help me. I just bought this kit and when I tried it with Adobe Audition and cubase, on both I couldn't pick up the signal although the interface is on and I can hear myself. Later, the rode AI-1 started shutting down as soon as I turn on the DAW. Can you tell me why is that happening? Thank you I really hope you would read my comment 😩
"Yeah, oh yeah!" - Barry ;)
O yeah yeah
How does this setup compare with the ride nt usb mini?

Great video, there are the answers to my questions. Thanks, it's really appreciate !
Focusrite studio 3rd generation complete studio vs rode nt1 complete studio which is better???
thats not even a question an NT1 powered by a potato is better than focusrite kit
I have 2 already. I will buy more in the future.
This is a great little amp for us sim racers/gamers and the sidetone is marvelous!
Great review. Solid videos as always.
legend m8 just what i needed Cheers!
Sounds amazing. Thanks..
The guitar riffage was amazing man!
Thanks for this amazing review💯
As I am looking into getting gear to record, and having zero knowledge, thank you for this review. Looks like this is the best buy :-)
Great review, definitely getting this kit. Coming from the mbox 3 mini which is outdated lol
I hope Rode considers updating this with 55dB or more of microphone gain. 45 is unusually low and I expect that will limit sales.
recent firmware updates made it possible to go up to 65dB (dont ask me this is possible)
Well, if my 2i2 ever dies, I now know exactly what I'm going to get to replace it. That amount of gain and almost-no noise? That's simply unbeatable. Those Australians do it proper!
Yeah 45db of clean gain is pretty rad for the price.
Thanks for sharing
You need to do more noise floor tests tbh.
What else should I add to the noise floor test?
Podcastage the test with no mic is good, maybe go back and do that with other interfaces for the Podcastage 2 channel.
The audio sounded a bit wonky for the first half of the video but sounded much better afterwards, honestly for $130 I would pick this up and maybe an nt1a, sounds amazing, not as bright as the scarlett but still great.
The fact that you dont need to install drivers is the reason that its better than the 2i2 or the solo in my opinion.
Thanks and best regards,
YOUR VEDIOS ARE GREAT
Hey dude! Just watched you upscaled to 4K on my new TV...you look good lol
Haha. YIKES!
For the same price range you can get the Audient Evo 4 which has an option to pre-set your volume so you won't clip!
Great Review For you, What would be the similarly priced interface contenders?
Great review. Just received the beautiful black box package from RODE direct as well. In the process of filming a review as well. Did yours come with the USB stick and Rode pins as well?
Yeah. I forgot about that.
No worries. I am assuming the retail kits will not come with them like our review kits did. I am mentioning that in my video. Then again, you never know, maybe they will. Did you check out the USB? Great promo material on there. PS Love the channel. Check out some of my stuff if you get a chance.
Do video every day bro, cont wait realy! Love ur channel very much! Here is a big fan for you......
I can't afford to make a video every day.
Hmm bro I too agree u. I just expressed my excitement!
The standalone AI1 in the UK is £89 and the package with both the Mic and preamp is 300
ASMR at 3:54 😅
over a year late but, imo, you sound better through the AI-1 than your scarlett 2i2 I was watching this in comparison to your nt1 v nt1a video.
Totally agree with this!
Andrew M. Sheppard that's great. Bandrew keeps upping the bar of his reviews. Look forward to his comparison.
I would add the Roland Rubix22 and TASCAM UH-7000 to the list. It is by all accounts the best sounding interface under $400.
decent product, decent price
good review
keep doing what you love brother.
You're too kind my friend. Thanks.
oh please finish the song at 5:58, it was great!
Thanks so much. I actually have a demo done of it and a few other metal songs, just haven't released them. Maybe I'll put some videos out with those songs.
That would be great! Btw keep it up, your reviews have helped me a lot.
I agree I'm not even into this kinda music but i loved how that bit sounded
I've learned so much in your explanation.
I actually bought one and I kinda wanna connect it to my dslr camera. should I connect it through the headphone jack (using 6.35mm TS to 3.5mmTRS) or to the speaker jacks (using dual 6.35mm TS to 3.5mm TRS)? I am hoping for your response.
Damn I got lucky today..I shot the kit on Amazon for the same price as an single NT1
No sticker!?!
Rode ai-1 is more on for taking only like podcast not instruments. That is the best for streamers, dubbers, and those who just do voice! Top notch!
The Scarlett is way noisier than this one
3:08 As for sample rate it is 96kHz at best, not 92kHz.
did you notice 2 tiny pops while turning the gain up? one is at about 40% and the next is at about 65%.
I’d love to see a review from you of the Audio Technica BP40 and maybe a comparison to the SM7B and other large diaphragm mics around that price point
It's been on my list for a while. I'm slowly collecting a lot of the large diaphragm dynamics, but they're so expensive I just need some time to collect them all before doing the versus series.
No idea Rode Had an interface! Love the mics... Might have to look at this to replace my solo...
They just launched it.
Would you recommend this for someone who is just getting into recording at home ?
Thank you for your review, I buy it because you.
It has been 10 months, was it worth buying?
@@mxhibprod7743 for me , It worth. ^___^
@@SRW-Vlog You still using it after 10 months with no issues?
@@mxhibprod7743 Sometime, When I restart my computer. Rode AI-1 have to re plug usb.
You videos rock!
I really appreciate that a lot. Thanks for the kind words. =)
I wonder how this would be combined with the Rode PodMic
Dude you totally rock those riffs were vicious absolutely loved them and thanks to your videos I now know not to buy blue spark blackout just instead I am going to pickup nt1 kit I use Rolland duo capture interface should be ok right?
How does this mic rank up with all the new mics that you've reviewed?
Hey Podcastage - if I'm set on buying the Rode NT1 mic, would you still recommend that I get the kit covered in this video, or should I buy the NT1 separately and pair it with a somewhat superior audio interface, like the Scarlett Solo 3rd gen?
Hey thanks for the review, I just got it and it arrived doa until I did a firmware update. Have to ask what is your setup for the guitar distortion? That was the highlight for me :)
Hi, you're the best. I have the id4, but i love the smaller form factor of this Rode interface, and i would change only for this, but the sq is still my first motivation, so this has to be almost equal on that regard. do you think the preamps are similar? and is the hp pre better than the weak one on the id4?
is the arm included?
Clicked on this so fast omg, nice review! Between this and the Midas preamps in some of the Behringer interfaces, which one is quieter?
I'll have to test them. Behringer does not publish useful specs.
Podcastage please do! Trying to find a budget interface with the cleanest sound and lowest noise and your channel has been phenomenal
scarlett vs rode ai1? which one is better
Some people are saying this has stability issues with drivers and may in some cases inexplicably die. I was surprised to hear this, generally Rode makes great stuff. Has anyone had that experience with it?
You need a good alimentation to have no problems.
i'm not sure if you're able to help as this is quite an old video, but my setup seems to need the gain to be at least 70-80 to get good audio levels. is there something wrong with my unit? because my area is fairly sound treated but could be better for sure. I just feel like it should'nt have to go that high based on all of the other videos i've seen on this mic setup.
Thank you for the great review! If you have to choose between this and Focusrite Scarlett Solo, which would you choose and why? Thank you for the help in advance!
I would probably go scarlett solo because I could use the Preamp and Inst input at the same time and I do that frequently.
Hey bro. Commenting from the Caribbean. With reference to the rode audio interface, you mentioned there are other options at the same price point, that offers cleaner preamps. Can you list those other options for me please. Thanks
There is something about his/your voice and environment that makes every mic sound relatively the same. To me at least.
Please tell me does Rode Ai1 work on USB C smartphones? Samsug, a Huawei smartphone?
Wow! Amazing! Does it have to go through software process as the focusrites do? Or it can directly be used right away?
Young Chang All USB interfaces require some computer application to use. A compliant device like this one will work with virtually any software, from very simple and free applets right up to the most advanced DAWs, with the possible exception of a very few proprietary systems. If you have a computer with USB connection, you will be able to use this.
Wonder if it would work with USB OTG...
Would you recommend this interface over the Scarlett for recording a guitar on a Fender Hotrod Deluxe iii?
Why my audio has those weird buzzing/hissing sounds.. it’s so frustrating ..
Do you think that you could do a section where you "process" the audio, to simulate how it would sound in a UA-cam video or podcast situation?
The reason I don't do that is that everyone processes differently. Everyone will add different eq, different compression, etc. So it will only be showing how it sounds when I process it.
I wish you had tested monitors on the thing. I'm looking to replace a Focusrite with noisy outputs.
but that noise level though..it's unbelievable how quite that thing is for this price range
Thanks so much,
Ella 😊
Can you use a midi cable with that input?
Hi, I'm wondering if you could help me. I just bought this kit and when I tried it with Adobe Audition and cubase, on both I couldn't pick up the signal although the interface is on and I can hear myself.
Later, the rode AI-1 started shutting down as soon as I turn on the DAW. Can you tell me why is that happening? Thank you I really hope you would read my comment 😩
