This box sounds gorgeous to my ears. Noiseless. Doesn't color the sound at all. I've been recording all sorts of microphones. Great pairing for a TLM 103. 6 months on: not a single issue. It just works.
@@gurucharanchundi I have that same combo. It can run the sm7b, but it's better with an se electronics dm-1. The cloudlifter didn't run nearly as well.
MOTU has amazing customer service! After almost 4 years, the USB-C port of my M2 began acting up. I went online with MOTU support to find a way to fix it. They asked for my invoice and told me they'd replace the unit, even if it's that old! I'm totally blown away. They earned a loyal customer for life!
MOTU is definitely one of the best at embracing the wishes and needs of actual customers in its new product releases. They deserve a lot of credit for this.
@(T)(h)(e)(D)(u)(d)(e) I am replacing MY focusrite solo 1. because the noise is garbage. and 2. im on windows and focusrite drivers cause me to bluescreen 90% of the time i want to change my buffer or sample size. It's bad.
From my experience, Scarlet's mic preamp and latency are both pretty bad. I'm currently using RME Babyface Pro btw, but MOTU M2 seems legit, especially for the price!
Gotta say that your review and that from Julian Krause encouraged me to get this. All the points that caused you concern (wobbly knobs) aren't an issue on mine, they are quite solid with little movement. The XLR input is also really tight so maybe it was just your unit and you should get a replacement under warranty? So thanks to you and Julian for a really great recommendation.
These are almost impossible to find. Every online and retail outlet is back-ordered. Walked into my local Sam Ash on Friday and they had both models! I can proudly say that I am an owner of a MOTU M4! Excellent review mate!
Most people have much better luck ordering from Sweetwater. No more than two weeks on an average to get a Motu M2 or M4 shipped out. Any where else you will be waiting for 14 weeks to several months.
@@carlosserrano3985 great to here. At least you didn't have to wait several months if you ordered it else where. A friend of mine bough his M4 from Sweetwater and gotten with in two weeks just like I did. I think Sweetwater is probably the best place to order stuff online. Just a much better experience.
just tested my motu m4.. way way more clarity than my previous interface with 109db Dac dynamic range. I re listened to my mix. these are my comments: very nice stereo image, clarity is superb, i notice the depth which my previous interface doesnt have. I also notice some details like finger noise of acoustic guitar.. Dont ever buy lesser specs interface.. it just a waste of money. better yet sell your old one and upgrade to this one.
I was going to purchase the highly popular Focusrite Scarlett, but this is CLEARLY the superior product, on all counts. I love your videos btw, always highly informative, by someone who actually knows what he's talking about:)
You are an absolute gem, sir! I stumbled across your channel when looking for an interface! I plan to get the Shure SM7B and wanted to get a cheaper alternative to the $500-1000 price tag of so many audio interfaces/mixers. I found this guy on Reddit attached with your review and was sold immediately! You are amazing for not only being hilarious-- but also accurate, thoughtful, and explanatory of all the nerd info as well as the legitimate pros and cons of the MOTU M2. Thank you so freaking much. You are awesome!!! Subscribed too! ♥
Your content has been super useful to me over the last few weeks, it's helped more than you can imagine. I had a full podcasting setup with PodMics, stands, 7506s, cables, and a Rodecaster - but circumstances have changed, and I needed to be ultra lightweight for travel. I have decided, in large part thanks to your content, to go for 2x AT BPHS1 headsets, running into a Motu M2 - into my laptop. I was itching for a SD MixPre3ii but it was super hard to justify the extra $$$ for a pre-revenue podcast, especially when my mics of choice are not super high fidelity anyway. I've been able to get my setup down from over 8kg + laptop to under 1.5kg + laptop. That's a MASSIVE haircut when you consider the ever decreasing carryon luggage options available. Once I get it all up and running I might make a short video about it. Keep on keeping on dude!
Hi! I'm looking to get an Audio Interface for recording Audiobooks and Voiceovers. This is a home set-up with a Windows 10 laptop, in an untreated room. So, Can use only Dynamic Mics like SM58 or Rode Procaster. CLEAN PREAMP GAIN and LOW NOISE is prime requirement. I've shortlisted the Audient ID4 MK II and the MOTU M2. Both are at same price here in Mumbai, India. The additional mic input in the M2 is useful in case i decide to work on two person narration or interviews. Which would you recommend? Thanks in advance!
I have the Motu M2. Great preamp, great interface, and just great. My main and really only complaint about it is that it doesn't have enough control. Only a gain dial, and that's it, no mute button or anything. But if you don't need that, I definitely recommend paying an extra $50 and getting this over a Scarlett Solo or something like that.
Thanks so much for this review. You got this review out so quickly, and I really appreciate that. I was about to buy an $800 interface, but this one (the MOTU M4, to be specific) has the features I really want (including an input monitor mix dial) that none of the other "entry level" interfaces have. Given the sound quality and features, I would say this device is "prosumer" not "entry level."
After thinking about it for month and month, I finally pulled the trigger on the MOTU M4. I was thinking a lot about wether I need The M4 or if I should get a full out 4 channel interface, and in the end, the M4 would give me some features, that I really like. The line ins3 and 4, which I could use with - say - two DBX 286S, if I should ever need the additional mic inputs, or maybe for a stereo input. The Mix dial is another thing I sometimes love to use. But the completely digital controls for all inputs and outputs is the most important feature for me. I like hardware controls for fast changes, but I like digital controls for giving me the most control. Digital controls for the knobs is a genius move by MOTU and I really hope, more companies will pick that up in the future. Your review supported me in my decision process in terms of the sound and for that, I thank you! Just one thing: In my books loop back isn’t exactly preferable on stream. At least, it doesn’t fix the problem many people have, leveling their audio correctly.
Just one small tip for loopback use in Logic. Set input to 5-6(or 7-8), and set output to 3-4 then you will be able to record loopback in Logic Pro X. I spent several hours to find this(maybe I'm stupid enough).
Ohhhhh hell yeah!!! I'm buying this just for the REAL metering!!! Finally somebody gets it right!!! Oh snap...Loopback too??!! WAIT! There's a power switch??!! SOLD!!!
Earl, I continue to be amazed that other companies have not yet figured out metering = good. I mean REAL metering like you refer to and like MOTU has included in this unit. At least PreSonus' new units have REAL-ish metering as well. Other manufacturers, please add REAL metering. They are desirable and a REAL selling point.
@@billlord4203 I couldn't agree with you more my friend! Three colors of flashing LED's really don't cut it. We can't expect the best results when we play it by ear.
I’m trying out the M4, partly because of this stellar review of the M2. I haven’t been able to find a negative review, actually. I was a little concerned about the loose knobs and XLR ports that you mentioned as one of its only negatives, but the unit I received doesn’t have that issue. The XLR ports are tight and the knobs are sturdy with a nice resistance to them. I wonder if they fixed the issue since the release date based on feedback. Anyway, thanks for the review.
You probably have a V2 which is made in china with slightly newer components, your MOTU software should say firmware version 2.0.* which means it's a v2, it would say 1.0.* if it was a v1 (assembled in USA, slightly older components). I had both and the wobble is noticeable on the USA version, while the Chinese version is super tight.
@@duvels86 That's great to hear, that's my beef with US manufacturing, it's nice and all but super inconsistent and sometimes problematic, my current is a V2 made in USA, works great for months now
And the most IMPORTANT thing you haven`t mentioned MOTU M2 has dynamics 120 dB on the output and ESS Sabre32 Ultra DAC Technology!!! (Focusrite Scarlett 8i6 3gen shit only 108dB with narrow, thin but clean plastic sound and castrated bass - I sold it after month)

Great in-depth review and you just convinced me to buy it. I was originally going for the Focusrite Studio Set and decided to give up that package deal for this. The mics can wait, what I need is a superior audio interface right now that will last me a while and I'm convinced that this is the one. Subscribed by the way, I like how well you tested the device. @@BadEmpanada I always find that any mic i use on it sounds much to flat compared to the behringer umc404hd i bought for podcasting. At least I can speak to the longevity of the scarlett solo and its dials. Btw love your channel!
THANKS!!! Been postponing getting a Focusrite Scarlett 2i4 Gen 3, waiting to find REAL reviews of the new M units by MOTU. This exceeds my expectations, thanks! Not sure if the woobly buttons could become problematic (digital dirt noise), and same with the inputs. Will have to consider, but so far MOTU just positioned itself in the fast lane for entry-level audio interfaces.
@Redpill Progressive I record vocals and instruments, for me the A/D convertors and mic pre-amps in the ID14 are way more important than some perceived frequency
I was looking for an audio interface for myself, and I had not even considered MOTU because the only exposure I had from them were their high end products. This review made my mind up, going to grab this little guy now. Thanks!
I’ve noticed that my motu doesen’t have an instrument button so it automatically detects my guitar signal but sometimes it doesen’t work unless i make the gain peak. Why does it just not have a button? How do i fix this?

Today I learned that the Motu M4 can pickup noise from my Wifi Router and that it was the source of crackling I've had for a year. I'm thrilled I figured that out and was able to fix it, by reducing the allotted power to the 2.4 GHz radio.
Really informative and entertaining videos! With most of the world on lockdown, aspiring musicians and content providers need to up their game on home studio capabilities. Knowledge is power. Subbing!
The audio loop back ALONE is one of the best features of this, period. I hate switching between my mobo to sample stuff with stereo mix from online. Thanks for the review. It helped me a lot. I came back years later to say that this device has given me nothing but problems for the entire time I've had it, and Motu support is absolutely terrible. The driver gives me blue screens on Windows 11, sometimes the device just turns off, sometimes it makes a loud screech then stops, and Motu does nothing to help it.
Encoders and connectors on my MOTU Ultralight mk4 are wobbling too, but never miss a connection or skip values, so i guess it is some specific about their encoders and potentiometers manufacturer. I'am using my Ultralight mk4 every day for more than a year without any problem, so this wobble is not a fragility. Another thing which you can add as missing is that there is no lock on XLR. You can find it on their higher grade models. I believe preamps and DAC/ADC on M2 are the same as on my ultralight mk4 and they are best ones i have ever used. Previously, a have used a Focusrite Saffire Pro 14, Scarlett 2i2 mk2 and Steinberg UR22 mk2. This one outperforms all of them easily. Nobrainer for less than $200.
I bought one of these on a whim, since it was class compliant and didn't have the web browser mixer like the higher priced units from MOTU. I didn't buy it for iOS products, but for use in a Linux Environment. I am running Manjaro XFCE 18.1.3 with success. It records clearly, and sounds excellent. I can tell you that I am beyond happy for what I need it for. To be honest, I didn't notice any wobble in the knobs until I watched this video, but I don't see any wiggle in the XLR jacks on mine. Overall, it is a steal at $170!
Mine's in the mail and it's competitive to get one, they're getting snatched up pretty fast! Good job sharing the features... you make me excited about getting my system going! It was listening to members of Boulder Guitar Society on Zoom and a discussion of the better sound one can get with a good interface (rather than the bloody computer!) that had me discovering the M-2. Stat-wise it looked like a winner and from our perspective it Sounds Good too!
Got mine today and definitely ordered through your link to Sweetwater. Even put you in the registration as the user I learned about it from. Did Motu ever respond with saying they were going to tighten the knobs and connections? Mine are all rock solid and have zero wobble. Nearly the same as my iD4 in build quality. I was 🤏🏽 to buying a used iD14 I. Ebay before seeing your vid. Also, the hoodie I ordered from your shop saved me from a sound out 4 inch holesaw bit. So thanks for that too.
Recently decided that I would start doing VO. Came across your channel and I love it!! Was going to get the Focusrite Scarlett but landed on this due to your review, well the M4. No M2s available but B&H somehow had an M4 so benefit: an input monitor mix; also snagged the Lewitt 440. All the M4's dials are super solid so it seems Motu has fixed that wobble issue you pointed out, I'm giving all the credit to you for that one haha. Super excited to where this goes. Keep up the excellent work Bandrew!
Just bought the M2 based on this glowing review amongst others. I can report that it is well made, works well with Windows 10 and has good latency, but compared to the 20 year old Digidesign M Box 1 it replaced, it is sonically inferior. The M2 has a very small sound stage and bring vocals very much to the front of the mix. I have over 30 years in audio electronics engineering and have worked for Roland, Yamaha, Alesis, korg etc as well as being involved in DAC electronics design. The moral of the story is, don't be fooled by the great noise, distortion and sampling frequency figures, as they don't necessarily translate to good audio quality - You need to demo what you buy and don't discount used classic gear with lesser spec (all you really need is 24 bit 48KHz for pro audio applications). I recomend older Crystal or Burr Brown DACs over newer ESS etc.
Your comment about the better quality of the Digidesign MBox 1 really caught my attention. Do you think all interfaces with the ESS DAC sound similar? Cuz I've heard that there is pretty much of a difference in sound between the M-line and the Ultralite line while they got the same ESS converter. Also heard people in general praising the ESS sound, some say the M2 and M4 sound much better than the Focusrite. I'm interested in the Ultralite units, however which similar audio interfaces would you personally recommend?
@@proudpolishherbsman2583 I don't know about other boxes using ESS technology, but certainly IMO the M2 and M4 sound inferior to the M boxes. Other recent interfaces I've tried like Presonous also sound inferior.
You should be getting a special christmas present from MOTU. This fantastic video made my decision for purchasing the M2 months ago and I can't be happier with it.
Yea ive looked at all and went motu m2, has everything i need and the ess dac is super fucking clean im blown away by the clarity, my friend has the Apollo twin and very close in sound quality
An update to my comment below. I received an early Christmas gift.. the Motu M4.. and a Dbx 286... based on your videos (as well as another YTuber).. All I can say is.. HOLY Crapola, WOW!!!! What a huge difference in sound from a single Scarlet Solor and to now with the 286 and the Motu. The 286 really let me quiet down some low end noise and the Motu for 2nd-ary amping if needed. Did I say wow? The 286 appears to be lowering my sound floor to incredibly quiet sounding (or lack there of sound). Podcastage, thanks for you reviews they have become invaluable and handy when trying to decide what to buy. Oh, and please don't chuck that red smoking jacket, it's stylish! haha
Would love if Bandrew would tell me why he doesn’t use this currently? I own it and love it but I’m just curious why u still use the Scarlett in current videos after giving this one such a glowing review? Did it not hold up well?
there is a podcast ep where he already answers this question. but it basically boils down to consistency. in order for the review to be consistent with the audience watching it, he uses Focusrite as a base guide as to how will the microphone sound on an entry-level interface, so everyone will have an idea on how it will sound
so.. comparing 2i4, M4, and audient's iD14, which one is the best? Edit: so my use case would be (1) recording a grand piano in a small studio; (2) recording a nicer grand piano in a large chapel hall; and (3) recording choir ensemble singing in the same large chapel hall. The microphones are a pair of rode M5. Edit 2: the use cases I have seem to point me to the cheaper version with just 2 inputs (that is, 2i2 and M2) but I put the 4-in 4-out versions here so the comparison against iD14 is more of apple-to-apple comparison.
universal audio apollo (if you got the $$$). definitely unnecessary for podcast but excellent for music, but this one definitely can compare at this point especially for the price
Watched the video because I trust your gear reviews. My current interface is dying and I'm considering this one. Writing a comment because I loved the Dr. Who reference. Thanks for these great videos. Don't blink!
I was considering the motu m2 as its specs are probably the best I have seen at its price point, but I am bit concerned that it might unstable with windows 10 (based on user comments I have seen in forums). How are people finding with Windows 10? Is it a good experience.
Hey, this guy is a really good gear reviewer! Just bought the M2 based on Josh at Sweetwater recommendation. This review just confirms, and thats nice.
hey buddy, do you recommand the motu M2 over an AG06 ? I miss a EQ/COMP like on the AG06. Im looking for the best interface audio interface/mixer for my sm7b and a PODMIC. Thanks very much mate! much appreciate
I really like the features of this interface, and it looks like it has really nice preamps. For my own use I'd get the M4 and plug a mixer into channels 3 and 4 and use channels 1 and 2 direct, giving me the flexibility to use microphones directly with the interface and plug all sorts of stuff into the mixer if I wanted to.
@@woothepoo9397 A physical mixing board, something with nice preamps, that I can plug into the M4 and then have the option of going direct into the interface or going into the mixer then into the interface.
Thank you for featuring this interface. I was very intrigued when this model was released. It has just about everything needed. Cheers to an on and off switch, proper metering and MIDI!
though... does this imply corner-cutting in the materials/components that they use? (I am assuming US labor prices are quite high and the M2 is selling at the price of a 2i2 which is made with much less manual labor costs.)
@@patchybeardopinions9340 I concur with that, but my point is that to compensate for the increased spending in manual labor, they have to use less expensive components, no? (Would like to be wrong about this of course XD)
Late to the party but I wanted to say that this was one of the videos that made me decide to return my Scarlett 2i2 and buy the M2. I've enjoyed watching your videos though, great job, keep up the good work! A couple things you don't mention which I think are important: The headphone Amp is one of the best/most powerful among the class (A significant reason I am returning my Scarlett 2i2), and also the fact that they are MADE IN THE USA, which is really something we don't see much of these days.
I was gonna ask for this review. You already had a video up before I had time to ask the question, impressive! A shootout for sub-200$ audio interfaces incl. latency values and preamp noise would be cool af, especially Focusrite vs MOTU vs Steinberg vs Behringer vs Presonus vs M-Audio vs Native Instruments 😁🤣 Kinda kidding although it would be super shootout lvl. Great job man, keep it up!
Got an SM7B recently and even though they are selling out constantly right now I managed to snag a MOTU M2 as well. The SM7B is such a great sounding mic and with the Motu m2 being a decently inexpensive interface with a high quality build and sound that gives just the right amount of clean gain for it makes for such a great combo.
Did you buy the motu M2? I have it and I want buy the SM7B, I am french so 'im want to be sure to understand well, when he is testing it on vidéo, he put knob at 3 o clock then 6 o clock and the motu seem to deliver enough power to drive the sm7b without having background noises etc. So it's all i need? i mean, it would be useless to have a cloudlifter?
Individual 48v & monitoring, as well as loopback #Hype Awesome option! I would have picked this up if it had been available when I was looking for my first interface!
Thank you. I've had the Scarlett, SSL 2, and Steinberg interfaces in the same price range. This smokes all of them. Best preamp sound, best monitoring, and best headphone monitoring. Plus, it has the Loopback feature that a lot of interfaces have now which makes it easy to record internet audio.
First of all thanks for all the review you've done, I can't thank you enough for that, and especially for this MOTU M2 interface I've had since monday 16th. This one is a major upgrade compared to my Focusrite Scarlett solo 2nd gen, paired with the Mogami 2534 Quad XLR cable, the AT2020 and attached with the Blue Compass Boom Arm. I really appreciate it and I wish you the best, merry christmas and a happy new year !
Excellent in-depth feature and spec review. Honest opinions and great real-time audio demos. Extremely helpful and much appreciated. Just ordered one based on this and numerous other reviews.
I got sick of fighting with my M-Audio 2x2m and it's unbelievable latency. I remembered this review and ordered the Motu M2. 😲 Bye bye M-Audio. The Motu M2 shouldn't be this good for the price. Thanks, Bandrew!
I don't see any correlation between that kind of motion and build-quality issues. You pay extra for shock-mounting. It's just not by itself worth doing more than asking if it's a bonus or not. You don't know until somebody tells you..
For what it's worth, the early feedback on Gearslutz from people who've already purchased was that this comment about the knobs was a head scratcher to them. They said it felt really solid. They could be shills, but I don't think so.
You only demonstrated it’s mic & guitar input abilities. I record music from vinyl/tape sources, via Audacity (MacBook Pro), & an Asus Zendrive CDR burner. Laptop’s have poor DACs, not audiophile quality. I’ve considered 2 other interfaces; Tascam US 2X2HR & Behringer UMC204HD. The STRONG point of the M2 is it’s dynamic range 115.5db! The LED metering is deal-sealer, better than a single idiot light for the hobbyist. Maybe you could do a video addressing this topic. You might even mention turntable cartridge headamp selection. This video was good, thanks!👍.
@Surrounded byCowards diesnt matter the age the like preamps are burr brown, none of the cheaper interfaces can match the quality. And audient are still updating the software. Brilliant products. I have the id14.

I love your reviews man, the best! I bought on of these based on this review and it worked great out of the box, but then after about two weeks it crapped out in a giant way. It started making robot noises and cutting out. Luckily I was still under warrantee and got refunded, but I am definitely spooked by the durability and won’t go this way again.
Stuff happens. EVERY manufacturer has a certain percentage of failure. Its what happens after the sale (warranty) that matters. Did MOTU assist or was it the Amazon 30 day return that saved the day?
Unboxing videos - arrrgghhh. There are actually tutorials on how to improve "your" unboxing channel. I'd say drive a kabar dead center into the box. How's that for ya chumps?
Great review - thank you - was never quite happy with my Scarlett 2i2 3rd Gen (did a great job, but not quite happy). So after this review I bought the Motu M2. Had initial problem with intermittent connection / noise using a high speed USB C cable - but switched to the cable supplied in the box and all is good - I found the M2 noticeably cleaner with lower noise floor. - For some reason has easier and more reliable selection of inputs in DAWs (Audition and Da Vince Resolve on M1 Mac). - The on/off button so much more convenient. - The level indicator so much quicker and more accurate to set esp when setting up for quick Zoom or Teams meet (I can get it spot on within a second or so before going live). - And it has separate 48v Phantom Power for each channel so I can connect dynamic and condenser mics at same time - Clean on a 48v Sennheiser condenser and more than enough power for Sure SM58 with less noise than the Scarlett. - Sold the Scarlett and never looked back
This box sounds gorgeous to my ears. Noiseless. Doesn't color the sound at all. I've been recording all sorts of microphones. Great pairing for a TLM 103. 6 months on: not a single issue. It just works.

All critical components proudly made in China. They make the best stuff today.
You can add an inline mute button if you really need it. They start around $25 and go up from there.
Thank you so much! I spent days searching. I will try it now.
The latency and the driver controls makes it so far ahead of anything in that price range - wow! just wow
@@AstuteJoe great info. Thanks. Mine did arrive with software 2.0

Great in-depth review and you just convinced me to buy it. I was originally going for the Focusrite Studio Set and decided to give up that package deal for this. The mics can wait, what I need is a superior audio interface right now that will last me a while and I'm convinced that this is the one.

Just started using one about an hour ago. Don't know if mine is a newer series but the knobs feel great AND the box flies just as well if not better.
That's great that the dials feel great on yours. Hope it provides years of great sounding recordings.
They must have fixed the Wobbly knobs and inputs since you made this, mine has solid knobs.
Love this response❤
Thanks for the info about Linux compatibility. Did not know it is class compliant, it is a great addition to any Linux PC then!
@@VitalyPashkov agreed! I am using it in Manjaro with Jack and it works great. I am glad I went on a limb to try it out.

I'm blown away not only by the interface
But also because you slapped the bass

4:26 That melody is so close to Bullet For My Valentine - Your Betrayal
so.. comparing 2i4, M4, and audient's iD14, which one is the best?
Edit: so my use case would be (1) recording a grand piano in a small studio; (2) recording a nicer grand piano in a large chapel hall; and (3) recording choir ensemble singing in the same large chapel hall. The microphones are a pair of rode M5.
Edit 2: the use cases I have seem to point me to the cheaper version with just 2 inputs (that is, 2i2 and M2) but I put the 4-in 4-out versions here so the comparison against iD14 is more of apple-to-apple comparison.

Will I still need a headphone amp if I want to use a 300 Ohm headphones with this? How about a 150 Ohm pair?
I'd like to know as well.
Nope, another UA-camr tested this already and the headphone preamp literally blows every other interface in the price range
Thanks for suggesting this thing. My 2i4 is now collecting dust.
you said Audient was the best AI for start. But now, you changed for this one?
I love it when audio products come bundled with software that is already free
OMG.
The way he threw the box made me fall of the chair laughing... LMAO.
Fuck that box lmao
Unboxing videos - arrrgghhh. There are actually tutorials on how to improve "your" unboxing channel. I'd say drive a kabar dead center into the box. How's that for ya chumps?
Great review - thank you - was never quite happy with my Scarlett 2i2 3rd Gen (did a great job, but not quite happy). So after this review I bought the Motu M2.
Had initial problem with intermittent connection / noise using a high speed USB C cable - but switched to the cable supplied in the box and all is good
- I found the M2 noticeably cleaner with lower noise floor.
- And it has separate 48v Phantom Power for each channel so I can connect dynamic and condenser mics at same time
- Clean on a 48v Sennheiser condenser and more than enough power for Sure SM58 with less noise than the Scarlett.
- Sold the Scarlett and never looked back
