Is Shinola Worth It? The Snap Shoulder Bag Review | Leather Deconstruction

  • This is the first Shinola bag review on the channel. Thanks to the minimal finish of the leather, the natural markings and variations are especially accentuated. This leather bag was made in Vietnam, and I am looking forward to deconstructing a piece from their American line soon.
    Cost Estimate:
    I estimate about 12 square feet of leather was used here, which should cost approximately $60 based on the quality and amount used. It's a fairly complex bag to assemble and I estimate the labor and additional accessories to total $90.

      Every once in a while, I have a crazy thought that I should just *wreck* one of my purses (or a sweater, etc). It's soothing and violent at the same time. Conflicted me, I'm fighting the good fight for my accessories. So far, so good!

    Because of this video, I bought my first Shinola bag. It has "Sewn in the USA" and a serial number on the inside tag. I bought it "previously loved" and now it is loved again! Thank you for your videos and reviews!!!❤

    I love shinola. The first item i ever got from them was the leather backpack. I've used the heck out of it, and it still looks new when I clean it up. 7 years later. Just picked up my third bag (slim brief) and its stunning. Was bummed to take everything out of it and see a "Made in Vietnam" tag though.

    Thanks for doing this, it's informative and appreciated.
    But next time you destroy a bag can you please give us some info about the stitching, can you burn off a thread so we can see if it's linen or polyester? And can you see if it's machine stitched everywhere or do they have finishing details by hand? Hand stitching is easy to tell because there is no lockstitch in the middle of the hole. Stitching is important, some times manufactures use the cheapest and thinnest threads because the bobbins last longer and the machines for thin threads are cheaper.
    Also some info about the lining would be great, this one looks like good quality heavy canvas from here but I can't tell for sure.
    Lastly, can you please scratch the hardware with a file to see if it's solid brass or nickel plated please.
    All those things matter in a bag, we'd love to know more.

    I'm just surprised how small little threads hold up the shape and structure of leather. Especially in bags where weight adds to wear and tear of the product.

    • @SP-nx8qx
      @SP-nx8qx Рік тому

      They don't. There is usually reinforcements, tape, and/or interfacing in key areas between the leather and the lining, otherwise the bag would sag like a sack of potatoes.

    Thank you for your channel! I love leather but unwilling to pay the hefty price of leather goods from top luxury brands as I know I would just be spending a ridiculous amount of money for their name. I quite like the Aspinal of London and Tusting brands from England and I wonder if you could do a deconstruction with the Aspinal of London's Portobello and midi Mayfair bags as well as with the mini Holy and mini Hazel bags of the Tusting brand? Would really appreciate it. Thank you.

    I know that your wife must lose her mind when you bring a bag home and then take it apart 😳🥺 I would have a fit😅 but I will assume (trying not to make a azz out of myself) that if you can so easily destroy a high-end luxury bag, it would be nothing for you to replace it if your wife likes it. Another great video.

    There is a very old and crude saying in the US-- "He doesn't know sh#@ from shinola." Obviously shinola was meant to be good. I wonder if the brand is very old and (as old as that saying--at least 70 years), and they meant to compare it to the brand.

    • @marissasigner7712
      @marissasigner7712 9 місяців тому

      That saying comes from the original shinola brand which made shoe polish. Basically you can’t tell shit from shoe polish. This shinola just took the brand name as an homage to an earlier time where stuff was American made
