I really respect Birkenstock for not using Amazon and for keeping their production in Germany where they can maintain their standards and buck the trend of making their money off of very low paid workers abroad.

Birkenstocks are a classic in Denmark, when I moved here, about three years ago I was flabbergasted at how popular they are. I used to strongly dislike them but over time I started to worm up to them and now I ordered some for myself. My friends and family love them and always say that it's comfortable, flexible and long lasting. I ended up buying some and I am waiting for them to be shipped right now, can't wait to start wearing them this summer.

Materials seem the same as standard bostons aside from that.

Birkenstocks also makes clogs for working in a kitchen or hospital. When I was a cook I loved my Birkenstock clogs. I think they were made out of some sort of waterproof polymer that was super tough and had a slip resistant tread. One thing that was mentioned is the glue that holds all the layers together. For instance the glue that holds your resolve on the sandal. Historically, the glues that hold shoes together are the most environmentally impactful part of the shoe. I found nothing on their website, so this is another reason that third party certification would be nice.

My Birkenstocks and Blundstones are far and away my most expensive pairs of footwear (not counting things like ski boots), but they are without a doubt the best quality and the longest lasting. For any other pair of shoes I'll get 1 to 1.5 years out of them before I have to buy a new pair. I've had my Birks and Blundstones for years at this point and aside from them looking a bit scuffed (which is a part of the style) they're still comfortable and good as new. They may cost more up front, but they are far and away much cheaper in the long run.

Honestly I used to mock my dad for wearing his arizonas constantly. Then I got my own pair... now if I'm not wearing a work boot, I'm wearing a birkenstock. Even went and got some birkenstock bend sneakers cause I hated not being able to wear my arizonas out of the house when it was cold. It takes a little bit to get used to the footbed, I remember I my feet ached a little for the first week, but once you get used to them it's like your feet sigh in relief when you slip them on.
Honestly they're just well made, comfortable shoes. And no clunky thick foam heel that makes you walk incorrectly. They're just a good shoe. Period. I was putting on my bend sneakers the other day and reflected upon the fact the lining and tongue seem to be leather too (this isn't true of the ones with canvas on the outside so it's not all of them), and ya know, I just don't know of many popular brands that'd make a leather sneaker and construct it with so much leather.

I love love love Birkenstock’s. I bought my first pair of Arizona’s in 1995 when I was 20 years old and have owned one or more pairs ever since.
Yeah people used to make fun of me at first but after some time the people who long term know me don’t even see them or comment anymore. It’s just me.
I even bought my two year old daughter a pair. Now she is three and just now starting to wear them. She had to grow into them and learn to walk in them. What finally convinced her was one day after stepping on a bee with particularly nasty results I explained to her that the sandals would protect her. Now she learned to walk in them and won’t go outside without them.
I hope the tradition of these shoes will not change too badly with the times. I did notice they now send me catalogs, emails, and texts about sales and new styles. My thinking is hey…I love them but I am simple about shoes. A new pair every 5 or so years is all I need, but I am loyal and will wear them till I die. Maybe I will even request to be buried in a pair. That’s how much a part of me they have become.

Interesting how products are received differently in different markets. In Germany those are basically exclusively worn as house shoes and maybe by doctors and nurses at work. You never see people wearing them outside on the streets, not even in the summer when other sandals are common. When people wear sandals, they usually wear the ones with a third strap behind the heel.
I never even considered getting Birkenstocks as regular outdoor shoes, to be honest. To me that would feel kind of like going out wearing a bathrobe as a coat, or like wearing oven mitts as winter gloves. hehe

And while I'm plant based, I really don't get why people are mad they use leather. The world eats a LOT of meat and I would rather all parts of the animal that can be used are used. Could you maybe do a video on that? How is the leather sourced, process, how it lasts, how to take care of it etc.

@@murrayisarobot I would also really love it if Future Proof made a video about real leather vs vegan leather. Because as I said before, I don't really see the harm in using all of the animal, since they are breed for meat, not for the leather. So the leather use doesn't drive the demand, it's the meat that does that. It's more durable and more sustainable. If we were to cut meat use and we wouldn't need to breed so much livestock, it would be a different scenario...

@@Kristina-ek8yt interesting perspective, I've been trying my hardest to avoid buying leather and suede for the past 2 years but hadn't really thought about the "not driving demand" aspect of it. It makes sense I guess, but I can't personally get past the fact that buying the leather generates more profit for those who slaughter the cows, which ultimately is something I wish to not be a profitable action, and I'd want to play a part in driving demand away from animal resources altogether. I would still say thrifted or recycled leather products would be the best option if buying leather at all, but what you've said is something to think about / look into further for me for sure.

A few things about Birkenstocks. The most important is by having a sunken footbed and outer wall, Birkenstocks protect your feet better than standard sandals that don't. Birkenstock used to have a higher end brand called "Tatami" which were ever better than Birkenstocks. Most Tatamis had an outsole that the cork insole would slip into. That made it easy to replace the insole but it wasn't typically needed because the outsole protects the edges of the insole from deteriorating, which is one of the primary problems of Birkenstocks - edge wall breakdown.
You can divide sandal design into two schools - over the top and flip flop. Flip flop is where the strap is connected on the inside of the big toe. Birkenstock makes both types. But flip flop is inferior because it always breaks, so always get over the top sandals. Women like flip flop because they think it is attractive, but it limits the life of their sandals.
It isn't safe to drive in Birkenstocks unless they are a model that has a heel strap too.
