Vintage Chanel Bags : Did they use FAKE LEATHER?

- Is this a real Chanel bag? The exterior leather was good, but what we found on the inside made me doubt the authenticity of the bag (despite verification by Entrupy). This bag was sent to us by The Luxury Leather Guys.
At first glance, the inside material looked like real leather- but the acetone application revealed it was fake leather. I do not know enough about Chanel's earlier manufacturing to conclude if the bag is fake or if using fake leather was an actual business practice.
At Chanel's level, it wouldn't be difficult to use real leather on the inside, and that's why the use of fake leather there set off concern for the bag's authenticity and the methods used by authenticating systems.
Overall, the bag was pretty well made. Exterior leather was good for it's age, but it could have used better care and condition by the previous owner (some cracking). The fake leather interior however, is not what I would expect to find in a luxury leather bag.

I can't speak to this particular bag, but I can say that when I worked Customs for eleven years I spent the first year constantly calling the design houses to verify authenticity. I was constantly encountering products that were combination materials purchased in the thousands of dollars. They honestly looked and felt like fakes. The design houses eventually called back and told us they were real, so we shipped them to the customers. * Shrugs* Fake has become the standard, which is why I started crafting quality products with REAL leather and selling it. People deserve better.

Thank you - I despise these cheap fake leather PU products at Birkin prices. I have always found Chanel to be cheap, and borderline tacky. The only worse brand in my opinion is Louis Vuitton. I will not pay those prices for a canvas bag the color of sh*t.
when I went to my local bag spa the owner says that vintage chanel do use PU leather for the inside and they often came totally chipped. And he also says that all chanel gabrielle use PU too on the strap chain😂 He says every time a chanel bag came for repair the problem is always on the fake leather on the chain😢😢
This is why a lot of the vintage Chanel pieces will be sticky inside the pockets. The PU degrades over time. It’s a shame and definitely not “luxury” 😂

Yes LV was doing same, I have some vintage pieces which has this sticky inside. It is shame.

I have always wondered about the leather inside Chanel classic flaps. When I bought mine several years ago it felt suspicious to me. The burgundy leather inside has always felt like fake leather to me. Ive had my doubts since then. Would love to see you deconstruct a classic flap one day. As always thank you for your honest videos. It’s definitely made me think twice about continuing to purchase so called luxury bags. I was already beginning to feel turned off to all of it but I believe watching your videos has sealed the deal for me.

@@joycec8852 I think Chanel is honest about it (at least now, with all sorts of products and consumer laws) what the bag is made of. The one thing i find tricky, as Tanner points out, crappy leather covered with a thick (plastic) finish, you will never know for sure if you have top notch leather
@@Gotchalaboom you’re right! I had an idea of plastic coating on some leathers like LV does on its canvas but never really looked into it. These videos have been an eye opener for me as far how much or how little of a coating and how it can disguise the quality or lack there of of the leather.

Actually seeing a Chanel bag picked to pieces just laying on the table really puts designer bags in perspective. Any bag ripped up just becomes a pile of pieces. Why we all pay so much for just bits put together….🤦🏼♀️!?

I have some vintage Chanel handbags, they use a vinyl in those old handbags. Yes, you could also refer to it as PU. A lot of them had leather, like goat, but there were some that had that vinyl. More modern Chanel use mostly a fabric lining. They say it’s to keep the bag as light a possible, however, I would prefer a leather lining. Thank you for the deconstruction 🫶
It's simply to save money, goat lining in small bag would add NEGLIGIBLE weight. They just bullshit us.
I feel like Chanel totally used PU leather back then to line their bags. It was the 90s and that sounds like it would’ve been right up their alley. 😂 Honestly wouldn’t be the first time a luxury brand used cheaper products just to turn around and charge triple the price.
From the research that I have done, Chanel definitely used PU lining in some of their vintage bags.
And people pay thousands of dollars to show off the brand.
It’s not about showing off. If you don’t get the personal side of fashion, then that’s on you. Some people wear it for themselves.

Out of passion and love for the art, people create things, then the other part of it is they share it, therefore, “showing it off“. I’d say it’s quite uncommon for someone to spend such time and effort to make something only for it to be kept hidden or thrown away right?😂
Kind of like when we are at home by ourselves, or our family, and not going anywhere then we wouldn’t exactly dress up, style our hair and put on perfume would we? Most people would want to try to look nice and presentable, in a way, “showing off”.
Whether you’d want to go so far and call it showing off then that’s up to the individual, and whether they’d care to “defend” themselves no? 😂

I had a vintage Chanel canvas tote that was lined with PU. It’s from the 90’s - early 2000’s, can’t remember the exact date it was originated. I took it to a reputable vintage luxury store in Paris and sold it to them, as I didn’t get any use of it. They commented the bag had an PU interior and they rarely take in Chanel bags that are made of fake leather, the reason partly being they don’t like the smell of it and the fake leather scent would probably escalate into the whole room/ store. Hearing that from the luxury goods experts, so apparently there was a period of time Chanel did use PU on their bags.
looking for Chanel interior info, classic flaps should always have leather linings, others typically silk/canvas lining but quick research shows some seasonal bags have been lined in vinyl - will update if find more! hmmm, found this "Most often the issue with very old bags is the inside more than the outside - pockets tend to get sticky and the lining can deteriorate"

it's a type of plastic so would not be surprised - makes one think about all the plastic around the world in landfills that does not decompose - France just implimented new laws regarding plastic

In the early 90’s that bag was nowhere near $4k. Today based on what your findings are, the price preloved is very reasonable.
Thats definitely authentic. Fakes were not mirror quality 30 years ago.
Both Chanel & LV used pu in the 90s in many of their lower end bags indicative of sticky pockets. Many of LVs basic clutches in the EPI leather from the 90s have PU inside

I remember walking through Venice and seeing top quality replicas sold for 50$ by street vendors… don’t just assume that vintage equals real
nope I saw many authentic vintage chanel totally chipped on the inside at my local bag spa.
Thanks for the review, ❤, just to say as a Chanel customer/collector for decades, the bag you tested was a very cheap model. They really don’t cost very much at all. The inside of all my Chanel classic flap bags are all lined with butter soft Lambskin leather, which I have used for decades and still absolutely top notch quality. Over the years, I have bought cheaper models like yours, they are at least 3-5 times cheaper and as a customer, I don’t mind that, as they are meant to be cheaper models for me to throw things in. Having said that, I am shocked to see they have not disintegrated yet 😂 despite I don’t take care when using them. I won’t buy any Chanel bag post year 2017 onwards, the quality really had suffered irrespective which models you go for. If you have owned several vintage Chanel bags like me, I bought most of mine from Chanel boutiques, I can absolutely tell the difference without the need to ripping it apart 😂. Like any couture houses, they have cheaper models for a reason. The older models are absolutely superior in quality, plus I kept them well except those cheaper models 😂. I have moved on from buying bags from Chanel to Hermes, Gucci, Alexander McQueen, Launer, and Strathberry. Their leather products are consistently very high quality especially Hermes.
Also, as a luxury goods customer, it’s the beauty AND quality AND versatility AND colour AND hardware that matter. Unfortunately an ugly bag but well put together won’t fly because there are plenty of excellent choices out there. ❤❤❤
Don't think the reps are that good with craftsmanship even back 10 yrs ago. It might be now since the margins are higher and reps are getting better. I'm not surprised Chanel skims on inner lining, over all is a luxury brand with huge markups, they are not exactly artisan, is just a hyped up brand. Pure luxury is bespoke and customised, not marketed by celebs.

Some of the older LVs have bad vinyl lining that degrade in tropical climate...they should be forced to do a recall on some.bags and replace their products.

This is crazy!! I had heard rumors that Chanel used to use fake leather. I wonder if they still do. Truly gross at that price point. And here I thought vintage quality was superior because it had real gold plating. Looks like Chanel is just not worth it imo.
I wonder if PU leather would last that long if they truly used back then. But I did see videos of people complaining of new bags bought directly from the boutique that the handle broke and it exposed the material, and it didn't look like real leather

I'm surprised this PU lasted this long. All the PU items (from clothing to furniture) I have ever purchased only lasted 4-5 years.
Unfortunately, nothing is made the way it used to be, but a $$$ purse should be put together better than what they're selling. I won't waste my money.

Entrupy as an authentication service is unreliable. There have been many fakes passed as real by them. It's such a shame that such a beautiful bag has a low quality lining. Can anyone verify if it's actually a fake?
Oh No! Really? I recommended them after I purchased my vintage LV from @season2consign. I’m glad that they use multiple authentication resources for to verify their products. I’ve heard nothing but good things about Entropy.

FYI, Songmont sells more affordable bags. As per their claim they use nice leather.
second this - i’m using a caviar tofu bag from songmont right now and have abused it for 2 months - threw it on gym floor etc - looks new - still! would love to see if the leather and hand craftsmanship is legitimate as they claim

I think that a test on Cr6 presence would be important on all the bags not Chanel in particular. Cr6 can develop under certain circumstances and It provokes allergies and sometimes cancer by contact to the users

I've acquired some handbags that I didn't know were more prone to scratches and dents than other cowhide materials. I noticed that my lamb skin and goat skin bags are more prone to scratches, scuffs, dents, etc.
What are the best ways to prolong life or minimize the damage to these types of softer/scratch-prone leather goods so that we can continue to use them for years to come?

You have to be mindful of moisture, dirt, sue transfers from other fabrics. Stuff the bag to maintain the shape, don’t overfill it with heavy stuff, and if possible bro in a climate controlled environment, it if direct sunlight

I’ve had a few older Chanel with a PU lining. I currently still have an older phone crossbody with P.U. ( also I currently have a Gucci with a peeling P.U. Lining). That lining shreds and/or sticks to itself over time. None of my newer post 90’s Chanel bags have a P U lining. My classic double flaps have a leather lining. I have some with fabric lining. I’m pretty familiar with many older Chanel but must admit I’ve never seen the design you have. Did it have a authentication tag inside?
I'm not really the biggest leather guy in the world, I just like my leather wallet and I love craftmanship of items such as luxury goods because we're sort of predisposed to the idea that this expensive item from this brand must come with a story, and great artisan craft men must be behind these making them with love by hand, but today the only story on everyones mind when purchasing a luxury item is, "is this actually leather?" or "is this item even real?"

However I am not sure of the bag’s authenticity due to the look of some of the hardware and it’s coloring, the font of the logo on the inner pocket and the zipper…. Would you mind asking a couple of people who authenticate professionally? 80’s and 90’s Chanel has a lot of good fakes, people who made them actually used good leather and quality materials so there are a lot of them today (Vintage Heriloom has a fabulous video about that from 6/7yrs ago).
P.s: I am not stating that the bag is fake due to the pu lining, as Chanel is now famous for cutting cots so nothing surprises me, it’s just that a friend has a very similar bag from the 90s and the hardware (specifically the logo zipper) looks quite different.

If a 30 year old bag was made with a plastic material, think how much of plastic would be in a new Chanel bag at today's prices! The name brand Chanel and an outer piece of leather are paid for by customers. Very sad.

I’m bothered by that too, in fact furious especially from a “top” “luxury” brand, I’m expecting leather all over. LVMH makes so much money from us, why can’t they use genuine leather. This begs the question..how long have these luxury brands been lying to us?
