This is a token of two things: How Priest had a brilliant way of doing covers back then and how great a band Fleetwood Mac was while Green was still with them. Just how ahead of its time was this song back in -69!
Did anybody used to sing along as kid: "You're the green Mitsubishi with the horn too loud"? I didn't think those were the lyrics, but I liked changing them to that for whatever reason.
Rob Halford mentioned a lot of great riff masters including Tony Iommi and Ritchie Blackmore at their concert 10 years ago (as much as I remember) but then he said that Peter Green was at least of their caliber... and we all knew which song would follow. As for a choice, well... I could not really decide between the original and this mighty Priest version. Both are outstanding in their own right. @@sergiodambrosio363 Their reading (so to speak) here of Green's song is pretty straightforward. Their energy & style into/onto Green's version. I prefer Green/Fleetwood Mac's version because, for me, Green was a brilliant guitar player and highly influential on my own young days as a player (I learned how to play this song long before Priest took it on). The lyrics - knowing the context to Green - mean something entirely different in that version than here. The Baez song in something else entirely (and I am speaking here as a Baez fan - since you mentioned that). Because Baez was writing about and to Dylan (and it's quite a kiss off/fk you song in that context) & Halford could not, or did not want to, sing that whole swath of the lyrics that were absolutely, 100% about/to Dylan he left them out. In the end tho' there is absolutely no way that the Priest version can ever be as emotionally charged as Baez's version. It's just not personal, so it's not possible. There's my two cents.
