- Being a lawn care business owner is extremely hard. Mowing long wet grass is just one of the problems we face often. It's not all cherries and roses. Employees will drive you crazy, clients dont pay when they should, and equipment seems to always break down.

The more that you can shift your business to getting paid upfront, the stress level will go down in knowing that you are getting paid without any worries. I enjoy your videos, keep them coming as you can.
It can be so rough. There is so much weight on us business owener shoulder. No one would understand unless they were in our shoes. Let me name a couple issues. Non payers...late payers...people wanting add ons for free...complainers....talkers....employees....rain...flags in yard..sticks everywhere...trash everywhere...breakdowns...lost stolen equip...cancellations....list goes on and on. That said hope tomorrow goes good lol
Blakes lawn care !!!!!!
Well said. It can be very stressful.
Its called "business". Thats part of the risk of making it big.
They should have a local website where u could report non payers by name/& Or address, I had old lady's beat me for 60bucks, but I got good at feeling out the stallers n deadbeats
So the guy ran over a stump/ with my equipment that would mean one word starting with F
Brian how many yards do u mow in a week
We do about 45 singles and about 40 acres a week.
Put that guy on a push mower for a month.
lol
There are times when that is called for. Corrective action can go a long way.
They are cutting city owned properties every three weeks. That’s not mowing. It’s brush cutting. You can’t blame someone for not being able to see things in a jungle.
I had a rough month. Someone rear ended me and destroyed my pressure washing trailer and equipment and truck. It’s been a month and still haven’t seen a dime. A lady tripped over a yard sign and is trying to get me to give her money. And my wife car got hit and totaled too. It never ends.
whats the ladys name ill take care of you brother
Holy cow, man! When it rains it pours! I hope you and the misses are phyiscally well after the accidents!!
Copper Creek Cuts if I didn’t have money or another truck. I would be out of business
Thank goodness you had them!
Don Abraham That sucks man!
Sir always enjoy watching ur videos just by watching then feel like if i know already lol keep up that work attitude Mr God bless from massachusetts
Comsidering the conditions I would say that’s cutting very good! Running a business isn’t always easy that’s for sure.
I would agree on that. I was very surprised. Minimal clumping.
Awesome video Brian! Congrats on 50k subs!! I'm at 94. Hope to one day have 100k! Lol. Great work. Keep it up!
You might want to get extra bolts and washers for the wright. I did plus i have extra wheels as well. You just never know what to expect out there. But you need to teach the guy not to mow over stumps and bricks just do not work. Guess you found out the hard way. Good luck.
Yea I probably should now.
bad times pass man keep workin hard, growing, and makin money!
When it rains it pours man! (Pun intended) We've had a few days like that too. They're no fun at all. I try not to stress over them....but it's hard not to. Take it easy man! Good days ahead...you can bank on it!
How many hours have you put on the wright since you got it?
I demoed a zk 52 today. It was a nice machine.
I think we have around 140 on it right now.
Love your blog style videos. It's great seeing the ins and outs of a business like your. Good and bad. Your videos are always really honest, portraying things as they are. Keep them coming.
Everyone said start a business it will be fun. We all have good days and then the bad days hit us like a swift kick to the face. Keep grinding and living the dream. I hit something with my exmark and bent the deck so I feel your pain
LOL
What do u sharpen your blades with?
RBG 712
Hang in there Brian thinking about you ...its a tuff time of the year here in ks it's hot and humid and some thunderstorms passing through ...the Wright did GOOD in that wet of grass and yes the non payers my boss got stiffed a chunk of money late fall one time that was tuff going into winter ...
Appreciate it.
Your client may have expected you to deposit the check and the funds would be avail the next day or two... Some people play that extra day or two for funds to clear. Id call the bank tomorrow... then next day.. if by then I would call the customer (Which I think you said you already called)
You can't hit a home run every time you are at bat!
Truer words have never been spoken.
In 100 years it will all be good. Keep you chin up champ . Thanks for sharing let's us all know it all is not sunshine and roses.
Jeff Pratt he'll be dead
Lmao, broke a window checked prices. $386. Went to look at it again. The other one broke also! $386 x 2.... then my boot bottom ripped off.... why
Some days you earn... Some days you learn... “Dear brothers and sisters, when troubles of any kind come your way, consider it an opportunity for great joy. For you know that when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow. So let it grow, for when your endurance is fully developed, you will be perfect and complete, needing nothing.”
James 1:2-4 NLT
I just got towards the end... Who in their right mind uses a HAMMER when fitting blades? If it doesn't fit, its probably bent. You said it yourself. You willingly do something stupid, what happens if the blade comes flying off? I've seen it happen, when guys take shortcuts.
And what really stood out to me was when you cut in the rain. Wet grass blades can wreck mowers. Wet grass blades are slick and tough to slice, creating an uneven shred (at best) rather than the clean cut achieved on a sunny afternoon. Now I am not sure how often anyone here changes blades on a commercial mower, but it should be done each day. Never start the day with dull blades. Continuous, proper sharpening will also protect the blades, helping them to heal quicker. You have 1 sharpened blade on that mower, no clue what the others are like, probably dull. How often do you change blades? Every 10 hours, max.
doing good brian love your videos
Hi Brian, how much do you like your 72" Wright? I've been thinking about buying 1 to help us do sports fields, parks and other large Properties.
I wish the towns in my county had municipal mowing up for bid you should also get some amber leds wired up in your trucks
Cutting wet grass like that is just going the ruin your spindles, belts, clutch, and stress on the motor. So your just spending your profit on parts.
Doing research right now to open my own lawn business. Just a curiosity: what brand headphones do you use? Are they any good to reduce the noise? Thank you
Chin up my friend you are a rock star in what you do. You really do have a great attitude toward being an owner of a business. You Will get to where you want to be. Believe it until you achieve it❣️
Have a snapper pro walk behind that holds the blades on the same way. Just think if it was just a bolt and it broke it would be up in the spindle. Would like to have a Wright but no dealer close by.
Did you ever get the money...for the bounced check?
Good video. Luckily you didnt have sealed spindles or you would have had to replace the whole spindle. There is always something to fix in this business lol. He must have hit hard. Never seen a Spindle bolt break. Keep your head up. I find most issues happen this time of year. I think it is because it is getting so hot people get lazy and mistakes happen.
I think you are correct sir.
don't take checks, get an attachment for your phone and take cards that get approved immediately.
You need jesus lol
Daniel Foster every body needs jesus
Some days are really hard , but we learn from them. Keep up the good work. This community supports you . Thanks for sharing . We can all relate to your trials and tribulations!!
Thanks!!
I wonder why Wright don’t use industrial strength heat treated bolts?
Hey Brian how does your wright 72 do in wet grass as far as clumping is concerned compared to your vride? Looks like it did well in the video
It did pretty well. Obviously in the really thick stuff it clumped a bit but it did very well.
Coming down, cats and dogs. Ohh, almost stepped in a Poodle
Looks like Ed Wright would send you a hat.
Be thankful that shear bolt did its job and broke like it was supposed to
You always get the shit end of the stick as a business owner
Makes you wonder why so many want to be in this business.
Lucky bastard you got quick trips.
When it rains, it pours is a tell all expression! Always gotta laugh. Hopefully next week brings better things. Glad to see you could get the Wright back up and running.
You sound like Troy Aikman.
Thanks for sharing usually these things happen and I’m to frustrated to record. Lol !! But it is summer and these things are expected. Dealing with equipment dealing with employees dealing with customers and dealing with Mother Nature. Stay Strong Stay Focus and don’t forget to breathe.
the best attitude ive seen !
Thanks man.
What was the song played in this video
Do your movers use grippy tires?
The bolts called the spindle
The grunt when standing up after putting the blade on, I’m 28 and I sound like that already 😩😂
Haha, nature of the beast.
Equipment breaks down for 2 reasons, generally:
1. Lack of *proper* maintenance
2. Simple wear. I've seen/heard of too many owners scolding employees when equipment suddenly breaks down. Guys, its equipment that gets used every day, its going to break down.
If you complain about equipment breaking down, you're not ready to own a small business.
Our best week yet..lol...u and me both hey at least theirs Voicemail!!
Hahaha
Sorry to hear that. The past few days have been shit for me too. I got to my first job this morning and realized I forgot to load my trimmer and blower. I was so pissed that I just called a competitor of mine and asked him to cover the yard for me this week.
Dealer is key
Top Notch, It helps to remember that "This too will pass." Regarding the NSF long-awaited "rubber" check, it might be time to review your payment/ penalty policies to better protect yourself and reduce potential future exposure. Ask me how I know??! I too am a graduate of the School of Hard Knocks ... always learning the hard way.
Pop Quiz: What does a successful lawncare business seem to have in common with the Coast Guard?
5...4....3....2...1....
Answer: No matter how your day is going, no matter what the weather is, when everyone else is heading inside, you have to go out. There's always something that needs to be done - and as they say, time is money. You can't afford to be wasting it.
Nice job on this one!
I took on new costumer with overgrown yard and broke my husqe by hitting a re-bar sticking out of the ground. The grass was tall and didn’t see it. Broke the tensioner, snapped the belt and ruined my transmission. After spending tons of money in repairs the mower never mowed the same. The belt kept slipping every day, the clutch was giving me problems, the deck was getting out of alignment and the list goes on and on. One day i got so fed up and left the mower in front of a junk yard and went to the dealer and bought $9000 Wright Stander. Lesson learned... use your shittiest mower on new clients and keep your good equipment for well maintained yards only.
Where are you getting your trucks wrapped/decals? Local?
Local us logo mighty wraps
yea no kidding dealing with ignorant ah s We mowe 200 accer plus properties plus trimming bushes weeding fertilizing ect. 9 61" mowers in the the spring or rainy days it can feel like hell on earth to me. keep it up man got to get me a couple of does 72 Zks for sure. 😅
It's okay. It happens and ya just move on. Try and be on the positive side. Youre looking at the negative and waiting for the next bad thing to happen. You are totally right. It is what it is. Best thing is to just laugh. You got to watch your boys run around get soaked. That's put a smile on my face. Great job! I need to mow myself but it's wet. Gonna try later. I'm gonna try and get a weed whacker to work that I bought that didn't work Sparks up doesn't start
Shut out my UA-cam name
The blade set-up for the write seems odd with washer spacers, bending or breaking a bolt seems a weak and area,
Paul Harper same for scag looks like same design I've bent a bolt
Yea, I'm not used to this design yet.
In amazed you blades aren’t hitting after a hit that hard. Get through those times, because it will prove that you ARE a great owner.
Good job if you don't do the back up and down style of cutting instead mow so you are always blowing the grass out Wards you will have less clumps mate
i honestly think that one of the hardest businesses to run and work in is landscaping. especially mowing. if its raining you are limited to everything and then you fall behind. work 7 days a week past dinner time and just want to quit immediately. props to every single landscaping business owner out there!
Man, these are the dog days of summer. Keeping your head up is hard but the sun always shines after the rain. Keep cool, the heat index here is 110 after receiving 4.5” of rain last weekend.
There should be some type of blower attachment for the front of the deck that blows some of the water off, like when you exit a automatic car wash, if it’s that much of a pain to cut wet grass then that would be a cool attachment, probably cheaper then going over it multiple times.
Watching this video helped me more than you know. I’m starting my 4th season owning a landscaping company and I’ve had some of these frustrations happen to me too. I see guys on UA-cam all the time but nobody has the balls to show it like it really is. I saw that you’re thinking of going solo again too. Most people will fake it till they make it. You’re the real deal. Keep it up man.
Hey ,Brian I noticed you putting ice on your water. I freeze cases of water in advance and put bottom half of the ice chest of room temp waters /top half with frozen. It works great and last all day ,even with cheap ice chest.Just a suggestion...?...🤗
It's a great idea but I dont have a freezer in the shop.
10:10 this is why you need an enclosed trailer my friend!! Also clients who give you illegal checks that bounce need to be sued and removed from your client list. I would blacklist them and tell everyone you know in the industry about them. So not cool!
That's an awesome mower! Very enjoyable and great video brotha! Keep it up!
Need to relax you Need to laugh at like you did when it rains it pours no pun all we can do is to keep plunging along it will get better soon
Probably bent the spindle as well
Maybe just a little.
is that Ontario Oragon
9:44 it would be nice to have an enclosed trailer LOL, Nice video Brian like always, I know how stressful it can be to own an business but I enjoy it anyway, But barley ever my toro lawncare stuff breaks (nock on wood).
Looks great for highway grass. I know you said that you wanted to get out of mowing for the City so could you do a video about bidding on those city contracts
Every day something breaks I've been doing it for 32 years
It could be worse. Learn from your mistakes and move on. You are in it for the long haul.
Well the day I had to unblock my mower at leased 50 times cuz the blades where full and that small lawn took 2 or 3h
lawn care? i thought you were video producer ;) lol
mowing the same mowers makes things alot easier. we have 2 older turf tigers and one new one all 61” decks all use same blades bolts. only difference is tires oil and filters.
we always keep a full set of 3 blades in the truck. 2-3 blade bolts. extra belts. plus parts at the bosses garage. should have been able to put the belt on in the field with just a breaker bar on the tensioner pully
Never let yourself think it is what it is because its always what you make out of the situation
Sorry to hear about your bad day. Positive mind set and you will get through it.
You have such a great attitude and you tackled the whole thing pretty well I think.
Do you Dip?
How many days since that turf was mowed last Brian?
Nice
How many hours do you put on your equipment each week ?
I guess this is why you get an enclosed trailer?
Cody schrader EXACTLY!!
I would love one but it's okay for the equipment to get wet once in awhile.
Top Notch Lawn Care rust...? That’s what my thinking is.
What kind of headphones are those? And keep your head up man. Once this bad time passes it'll be all good. And for it being wet like that, that thing is cutting really well!!
Skull candy
if you need a break call me and ill be happy to run that mower for free!
Come on.
Same all my mowers broke today lol
Brian, you're allowed to have a bad day but you're not allowed to quit. Many of us look up to you and you caaaaan doooo it!! Praying for you man.
Thank you.
Hang in there Brian keep mowing!
Lovin the videos brian. Always good to get that notification for a new video!!
Thanks man.
Great thing you had the dual wheels, steep grade and wet is no bueno for a normal stand on.
For sure.
i thought that the wright strander had a lock on the shield so you didn't have to strap it up?
It still falls down.
