I don’t use a guard just how I’ve done it for 15+ years. I stick edge everything including beds etc and on string trim what I can’t get with my mower, around post corner and such. When I first started my business I wore shorts until I got ate up by some yellow jackets one day and have wore carhartt pants ever since no matter how hot it gets. Keep up the vids Brian. 👍🏻 job!!

I use a guard that i cut off just up past the string height. You get the best of both worlds.

Good video! I personally don’t use a guard anymore. I was all for using the guard until I took it off. It made a tremendous difference in the speed and quality of trimming. I like to run a long trimmer line in some cases. (I’m aware it’s not the safest or recommend for use without the guard) In a few areas I eliminated the use of a push mower. Average push mowers are 20 inches in cutting path. I can run 10-12 inches of string, diameter wise. It’s much faster for me to swing a trimmer, than to push a mower. You are correct about flying debris, it can be annoying and dangerous. I wear Jeans, High Chippewa boots, and safety glasses that make it safer. When edging with a trimmer, you can see a lot better without the guard.
I can go on forever. No guard works for me, however I understand it’s not the safest or recommended.

I don’t use a guard because of doing ditches. I need a lot of string and the guard kind of holds me back. I can get a much wider cut and it takes A LOT of time off of doing large areas that you can’t get a mower to. It also in my opinion is harder to fine trim with the guard on. Hearing your thoughts on how you think it leaves marks, there’s a technique you can use to that not happening. Always keep the throttle going and be very delicate with the height you are keeping the weed eater. You have to be very confident when doing it and stay at a consistent pace. When you start to get less consistent on the throttle is when marks start getting made. Practice on areas that aren’t seen very much that you can afford to make a mistake on. I also can get a more level cut because when I have that guard on it just kind of distracts me. I’ve practiced enough that I can weedeat as level as you could get with a push mower. It just takes a lot of practice and confidence. Again, the key to not leaving marks is keeping the throttle steady and not having much variation. The throttle also needs to be held down quite firmly so the string is always staying parallel with the grass. As you may know, slowing the throttle causes the string to droop a little because of gravity. If you hold the throttle down hard enough, the string stays parallel and you won’t get those marks. A delicate touch is also key. Don’t try and get too close. It’s best to start high and ease the head down and then start walking at a consistent pace. And also as I’ve seen mentioned is another key- don’t over extend the line. You can do a couple of pumps more than you would with the guard on. When you start doing three and four or more pumps the line gets too heavy for the head. So basically the more line that comes out the harder you have to throttle it to keep the string level. And also like others have said, the higher the grass the shorter the line (I’m sure you already knew but it still needs stressing)

No guard for me,Its lighter ,allows you to cut wider, especially in ditches and tight spots. I understand why the guard is their ,just don't like it. I think you having a problem with it sucking down and grabbing the grass is due to over extending the line.Your use to constantly taping out line because the guard only allows out so much before it's cut(12"-14")is what I recommend. Also wear some pants/ sleeves and you shouldn't feel stuff hitting you as much. We wear sports style long sleeved shirts and fishing style pants. It's way cooler than the sun beating down on your skin. Ok,now I'm rambling...I've said enough 🤓

NO GUARD for me . I am old school too at 50yrs old !!!! For me it is mostly because I like to EDGE my higher 5+ inch Augustine yards. The STICK edger does not allow the height I need. I also notice a difference when trimming a large area. It seems to help maintain a smooth cut. It feels like the head will float :)

    • @HeathLCK

The weedeater is engineered to run at its best with the guard cutting the string at the proper length. Can a good trimmer handle the longer string length? Yes, it can. Are the rpm's dropping with longer string lengths? Yes, they are. Just my 2 cents.

  • @Smith7.62

I have been mowing since I was 13/14 years old. I’m 30 now. I mowed my own yard growing up. Then mowed for a guy right out of high school. Now I have been mowing for a guy for 4 years and I also mow with another guy on Saturday’s. Also I am starting my own lawn service business (Smith Lawn Service). I don’t use guards on my trimmers and my main boss lets me not use guards. But the other guy I work for has guards.
    Positives with no guard-
    1)Easier to reach around things
2)Longer line length for more cutting area
3)For me it’s easier to maneuver
4)I can get way more cutting angles and cutting positions better and with ease.
    Negatives with no guard-
1)For sure clutches burn up faster!! I promise they do!!
    2)You probably sling more debris
3)If string is too long you have to find something like a rock or fence to cut it shorter. Or cut it with knife or whatever.
    4)Will void warranty!!!
The positives of using a guard-
    1)Less debris flying everywhere.
2)Keeps line at proper length so wear on engine and clutches isn’t bad.
    3)Will not void warranty!!
The negatives of using a guard-
1)My boss’s Echo trimmer with a guard literally eats the line up!! Every time you bump the head to get more line out, even if line is crazy short, the cutter on the guard catches some line.
2)The length of line limits amount and area you can trim.
3)The guard limits my maneuverability around trees/bushes/etc.

Hey top notch I am 14 and got nine yards around the city and I recently purchased the Stijl FS 70 R and I use it with the guard. I do this because I like to where shorts when I mow. If I take the guard off my legs will get bitten to death. My other reason is if the line gets to long the RPM will drop then it will bog down in thicker and dive into then scalp it. That’s why I use a guard
    Great vid top notch

Guards only get caught on objects, reduce visibility and cause you to waste line by chopping it off all the time. Anyone with experience can shoot the debris north, south, east or west. Depending if you want clippings out of flower beds its going to have to come near you.

Suggestion regarding trash pickup: To save your back and increase productivity, use the bucket-and-grabber technique. Bucket -- Take a plastic bucket like the ones you can buy for a few bucks at Lowe's or Home Depot (no lid needed), cut 2/3 of the bottom off, then push a heavy-duty trash bag through and secure at top with a bungee cord. Grabber -- Buy a grabber-reacher tool that allows you to grab trash on the ground without bending over, so you can walk along grabbing trash & flicking it into the bucket you're carrying with your other hand. For larger properties, we have a crew member ride an ATV, using a longer grabber to pick up trash & flick it into a larger bucket that is strapped down onto the front of the ATV. Much faster. BTW... buy the commercial type grabber because some of the cheaper ones are pretty flimsy and won't last. Keep up the good work.

Been cutting for 17 years since I was 15. I have always trimmed without a guard. A few things, it really helps when you trim ditches to have a big cutting swath as long as your trimmer has the power for longer string. When reaching under pine trees etc, a guard prevents you from getting a good reach it will dig into the ground before you can reach far under. Also when trimming always always trim counter clockwise, it throws the clippings into the grass rather than onto the stuff you just trimmed. Looks much cleaner

I’ve used both. Me personally, I don’t use a guard when I am using my brush cutter attachment. With that being said, I typically use an 80’s model shindowa ( I think I spelled that correctly) which I found at the dump with no guard on it, but it works like a champ. Runs better than my echo. But I like not having a guard on it to help with the spread of the brush. Now when trimming my regular customers yard, I use a guard just to try and keep debris from flying to far around. But that’s just my 2 cents. I don’t know nothin and don’t claim to

I used to have the guard on my first trimmer for my business when I started out but then when I got my second one I left it off when I put it together just to see how it was and I really liked it. Makes the head so much lighter, gives you tons more visibility when edging so you do a better job too and actually doesn't fling any more stuff at me than with a guard on. If I am using a brushcutter blade or going through thick stuff at our farm with the brushcutter I keep up there the guard stays on though. You're right it does take a bit of getting used to but if you don't do tons of big overgrown cleanups where there could be anything in the lawn it is really nice for regular yards. I don't see anything particularly "cool" about being guard free its just what me and my guys like and find easier to manage. If I preferred guard on that's the way it would be no matter what. You are the one using the thing you make it work the way you like :D

People who don't use the guard look carless and/or self-destructive.
    > You wouldn't use a trimer without safety/sun glasses, would you?
    > You wouldn't drive a car without your seatbelt on, would you?
    > You wouldn't grab cookies out of the oven without oven-mitts, would you?
DO YOU REALLY WANT A FACE ALL PITTED UP LIKE MINE!?!?

i took the guard off mine and had the same issue you did. i kept going too low from the string grabbing and it would scalp. i just couldn't get comfortable with it as i, too, had been trimming with a guard for as long as i can remember. so i just leave mine on and do fine with it on there.

No guard, you can tilt the head to direct exactly where the debris goes and I prefer trimming a bit wider of a swath than a guard allows. Really helps around trees and in corners. Also helps for trim edging and visibility I think.

I've been using my stihl fs100rx with a guard for the last 5 years in my business. The pros don't outweigh one single con and that is as you stated getting hit with a lot more debris. I tried it and after one day I threw the guard back on. I took a rock to the lip and boy did that make my eyes water hahaha. Haven't experienced that since. However I do not run the guard on my stihl fs130r but that is because I run a brush blade on that full time

The ONLY time it was helpful was when I had my FS250R and was trimming a hillside of tall grass. The FS250 had enough power to have a long string and Allowed me to cover large areas quickly. But for regular trimming duty, guard all the way.

I use a guard also............... The guard is on there for a reason too.... It keeps the line the length it's suppose be..... Too long of a string will bog your engine down and not run right....
Also if you bump it 2 times it will be too long then you have to stop and cut the line, that takes out of actual work time.....
I see the guards missing a lot in my shop and the spark arrestor or muffler is clogged up on those......

Boo LuQuette you don’t necessarily have to stop and cut. If you’re near a chain link fence or something thin you can just run it on that. Also turning it like you’re fine trimming and running it on pavement will wear it down in a few seconds.

No guard for me. Echo 2620T high torque gear drive head, .095 black diamond line, speed feed 450 large capacity spoil. I very seldom have to bump the head to feed more line. With te guard every time I bump a few inches gets chopped off and wasted. The 2620t has enough low end torque to spin the line in a 24” swath in thick wet grass. Also with no guard I can go down stuff like rail road ties and just reach over and get both sides at once if needed. I wear long carhartt pants so the sling back from debris isn’t an issue. No guard for the win for this old schooler

No guard all day long. I started my landscaping business when I was 13 and I’m 20 now. I have 36 yards that I do on the side of my main job. I find that without the guard you get more string which allows you to trim around stuff quicker, you can get into tighter areas, better visibility, and I wear shorts all the time and never have a problem with my legs getting torn up. Suck it up buttercup. I have an fs 70r and a fs 111r that I do this with.

Simple solution: Get a guard which is clear. I am working on a design now, already have a patent pending.
ALWAYS use a guard, otherwise you risk injuring your people, or damaging property. A small rock or other debris can do serious damage to human skin.

  • @supremeliter2372

I don’t use a guard but like you I only gave it a chance a few days with a guard on. I use big trimmers and mow large Commercial. I prefer to open up my line so the mowers don’t have to slow down near the curbs. Like you said I feel faster without it on there but I use (2) fs240’s and the other is a 250. If I did more residential I’d consider leaving it since I’d be around more windows and stuff. But if I’m out on 4-8 acres not really near much how risky is it.
Ps i use big trimmer because they’re mostly biweekly and I’m in Houston. They also don’t really require maintenance

I use both guard and no guard. No guard is my favorite by far, but each have their place. New guys use the guards to help keep from skinning yards out and an attempt at saving the bumps from improper use. For me and the other crew leaders, it's much faster to use no guard in general purpose trimming and edging, cuts time in half or more. Has nothing to do with looks, just functionality. Getting hit with rocks can be reduced by changing the angle or side of the cutting swath, or by not getting trigger happy. Light duty commercial trimmers need to have the guards on because of the lack of power. That said, knowing the limits of how much string you can have out on your trimmer will play a big role in longevity of the machine. The larger the engine, generally the more string you can safely put out. Too much string out can bog down the engine and burn your clutch out (still have yet to experience this in 9 years) it can also overheat your engine and cause scoring on the piston (fix is if you plan on no guard, tune the carb a little rich to cool the engine and increase the oil to gas ratio by 5. For example 45:1 where 50:1 is called for). We use redmax, shindaiwa, stihl, echo & husqvarna with 14 active trimmers in service 10 months out of the year in TN.

I run a guard. However on my FS94 and 110, I move the guard back and attach it to the two screws farthest from the head on the gearcase to give me a little extra length. So my guard’s attached with only two screws as opposed to four, and it’s been working great for me that way. Too much debris hitting my legs without it!

I must be 'older' school. Have not had a guard on any of our trimmers since 92'. Main reason I originally took off back in early 90's was needed more line to 'fan' bigger areas. Only draw backs I see are not safety (have never had an issue) but having longer string is more taxing on that lightweight little motor and those that have been doing for a long time know tips of line get 'dull' and you have to hit some concrete with the tips of string to 'sharpen' haha. I have guys that will have to re spool a trimmer 4x during a full day where I can go all day with just 4-6 feet of line.

I would use the guard because with out it you loose power it Boggs the engine down, it clogs the exhaust and put a tremendous amount of stress on the driveshaft and the clutch/clutch drum. It’s hard on all brands. Still has a problem with the anti vibe cushion being too soft, flexing and stripping out the driveshaft.
